NUNO, the fact that he did this when he must have been in a lot of pain from a serious and complicated knee injury the day before. So much respect for him as a human being, apart from his guitar playing. Awesome man.
The Song Within The Song...That's old school that only people that grew up with music from the era that he's talking about, and his peers reaching out to him came from and know all too well. So happy for Nuno and Extreme. They deserve all the accolades and attnention they're getting.
Regardless of players that can play more technical, what separates them from players like Nuno is substance, context, playing for the music/song and not simply to prove how many scales you can blast through in a millisecond. Nuno plays so tastefully and emotionally geared toward the entirety of each song that he manages to make good songs great. If you don't resonate with listeners, then who are you playing for but yourself and your ego. Nuno is cream of the crop in terms of intuition and musicality. Love this cat.
Pat was a few years ahead of me in H.S. Even then - his band was good. In Boston rehearsal - where 20 bands practiced - he was n a band called PINK. He invited my band into this small practice room - wowza.
Another great interview! Nuno and Extreme are BACK and inspiring a new generation of guitarists and bands not to mention lighting a fire for guitarists like me who are passionate about guitar-based music and ROCK!!!
Finally somebody that ask good questions from a Guitar Player Perspective, love that includes technical aspects of guitar playing, gear, personal and musical ..plus casual and funny stuff...etc great job Masters of Shred
I FINALLY just saw extreme in Glenside PA. They’re every bit of what I expected live and more. The talent level is unimaginable. But Nuno has that swagger reminiscent of VH and the inflection, muting, funkiness that grooves. I could watch him play all day. A true virtuoso.
Awesome! That's exactly what was missing for these last several years, solos working for the songs! Rise was asking for a solo like that and Nuno made a master piece! There's a lot of great young guitar players out there in their bedrooms playing amazing things but this is going back to what a rock song should be and sound like!
Great interview! Been a Nuno fan since I first heard "Mutha Don't Wanna Go to School Today" on the radio in September 1989. I instantly knew that this was a special guitar player that I was hearing.
Sick interview 🤘🏼 I’m still blown away at the fact that you get to interview these legends 😱😱😱. I was blasting RISE for my co workers at work TODAY!! It’s 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Great interview! Always a pleasure to see/hear Nuno talk… The new album is receiving much deserved fanfare and it’s super seeing new interviews in support of its release. Can’t wait for June and hope a UK tour is eventually on the cards.
That was a great interview in so many ways! Bravo! Nuno really summed it up so welll as did the comment that Steve Lukather made to him , because I believe that is just about how all us old timers felt.
Nuno has the rare ability Eddie had to inspire people who have never played because of his marriage of melody and feel while looking like a rock star. There are amazing players out there, but Nuno is able to go beyond a mere curiosity because his virtuosity is somehow relatable to more than guitarists. He always plays to the song like a hard rock Elliot Easton.
Nuno just doing what Nuno does - great riffs and kick ass solos! I think people are hungry for, and appreciative of, good guitar solos as part of a rock song again. Solos constructed over key changes, breaks, syncopated parts with the rhythm section, and a crescendo are just an integral part of an awesome song in my humble opinion. 🤘😎
Write a book! Idk why but I just never was exposed to a lot of extremes Music and so am new to being a fan of the band and Nunos playing. The Rise solo is sooo amazing. But all the playing hits! But what I’ve really been drawn to is the way Nuno talks about music and his stories. His humility and the way he explains everything is so cool and draws you in. Would definitely be cool to see a book happen!
Awesome interview dude! Cheers What a guy and player Nuno is - also pretty funny too! Early on the notes about sitting in your bedroom or online playing guitar it’s so true! Been a long time since someone’s got up as a band and writing a song and blown the roof off!
Fantastic interview. There is a fine art to conducting an interview with space for answer and also leading for more information if the interviewee is hesitant. You did an outstanding job!
Great interview! Thanks Derek! Your interviews are always very interesting and original. And you picked up my question about the Nele (I'm lili.coloring;), it's very cool! I just wanted to confirm to Nuno that, us Extreme fans, got the job done 😂: we said exactly what he was talking about telling people that what he does on Rise is what he has always done. And we named "Peacemaker die" for example. You can see these kind of comments everywhere. We are a big family 🤘😁 Get well soon Nuno, take care of your knee and I hope to see you on tour in Europe very soon too 🤘 Love you!
Thank you so much for submitting that fantastic question and for watching the episode! It’s supporters like you who keep the MOS wheels on the track! 🙏🎸🎸🎸
Fantastic interview !! Love it when interviewer lets the artist talk ! Perfect ! Great great interview - extreme and Nuno giving rock music great boost with recent tunes 👍
You get the best interviews man.. Love it.. Nuno is a class act for sure and a great player.. I love it that he said the solo should serve the song. I think many shredders today forget that.. They are all about showing their talent which is great, but I want to tap my foot and hear an anthem like we had back in the day.. Like what Nuno's band is doing! Great stuff man.. Thanks so much man for this interview.. Very, very, very cool.. I also play guitar and have since 78.. Great stuff.. Tim (Southern Central Indiana. USA)
I remember an interview 20 years ago (already !) when Nuno said that *III Sides* would someday get the recognition it deserves... and I believe this is now gonna happen, inevitably.
The song Other Side of the Rainbow is great song. I pre ordered álbum on iTunes and it was added to my library a couple weeks ago. Very Queen ish in the bridge. Fantastic solo that “murns”. Can’t wait for the whole album.
A great example of a purely melodic solo that REALLY serves the song perfectly is Joe Perry's Living On The Edge... Those 2 first lines, simple major to minor... Just perfection.
Novel guitar techniques are veritable Unicorns in this day and age. The Rise solo was one of those WTF moments in my listening/playing history to go along with Eruption, Cathedral, Yngwie, Nuno V1, Shawn Lane...and now Nuno again.
I think he’s absolutely right about playing guitar solos that are melodic and fast! There are great players like Nuno, Satriani, Guthrie Govan, Steve Morse and Steve Vai that are all perfect examples of this! 🎸 🔥 🔥
If you guys like guitarists who play with technique from their hands and soul, like Nuno, allow me to recommend you the work from Big Wreck's Ian Thornley. Great, great guitarist. His solos on the song "You Caught My Eye" is pure ear candy.
When the distorted guitars hit in "That Song" that has to be some of the most epic heavy sounds ever caught. I mean, I think they're quad tracked but that tone is like a benchmark for me.
@@MoreMeRecording Yeah I get your point! The song is easy and melodic, but the guitars are so crunchy. And the low tuning just adds to the heaviness. It became the benchmark Big Wreck guitar sound, as you say, specially on their first two records..
And Ian sings his ass off on top of the guitar playing. Ian can do it all. Slide, Steve Morse style ripping solos and more. Big Wreck is amazing. Not to change the subject from Extreme. They deserve the attention.
@@chrislestermusic Many years ago, a friend of mine told me "Big Wreck has its own genre; it's elite rock. You need some musical knowledge to appreciate how good they are". Well, considering how underrated they are, I think he was kinda right! I hate the term, but in this case they're really underrated. Song writjng, production, vocals... Awesome band. And yes, I deviated from the topic, Extreme is back and they sound great! These songs scream for big venues. I just learned that Play With Me was featured on Stranger Things.
Hey Derek, thanks for this great interview! Not sure if you answer Qs over here, but I gotta know. Where did they get their outfits for the Banshee video? :)
Extreme have realised that with the glut of music, its very easy for an album to get lost in the mire. In the old days, there was less music being released, and when a band like extreme released a new album, it was a big event. Fans followed the release news excitedly, and had to have to the album on release day. I for one , recall the excitement of dropping the needle for the first time, and pouring over the liner notes and lyrics. They have clearly tried to create that with "6" and its definitely something i would love the music world to get back to... There was nothing like it! Streaming threw the baby out with the bathwater on that one...
I think what the Rise solo sparked was that thing where you not only aren’t sure if you could play it… It’s that you aren’t even sure what it is at all. That’s rare nowadays.
Great interview 👍love hearing Nuno! a super cool cat ! I hope his knee heals up well 🙏 knee injuries hurt i have one not fun ,very diabilitating injury... i subscribed to u channel i thought i had subscribed awhile back .Thanks for this great interview 🎸🎛🥁🍻💫😃
Nuno IS the greatest guitarist as of now. He really has no peer though maybe there're some that are close to him. He's a genius. In both composition and performance.
I use my Rat the same way low gain to tighten bass and bring in some highs running into The Dude (usually on, edge of breakup). Eveyone tells me am using it wrong., until they hear it.
Numero Nuno! For you new Nuno fans, check out all of III sides to every story, which is Extreme's finest hour and one of the greatest albums of all time. Every second of that album is awesome!
Great interview, but that was not the 5150 guitar that was recently auctioned for $4 million. That was the Hot For Teacher guitar, which was just a back up guitar used rarely on tour and was featured in the Hot For Teacher video (but not used to record the song- that was a 58 Flying V). The 5150 guitar belongs to Wolfgang now and would never be put up for auction. If a back up guitar that EVH gave away to Alex’s drum tech got $4 million then imagine how much the 5150 guitar could fetch at auction since it was his primary guitar from 1984 to 1990.
Him and Vito Bratta were 2 of the best melodic soloists I've ever heard
I would add Jake E Lee to that
I would add warren Demartini too.
Marty Friedman

So insightful and intimate. He’s very well spoke, almost scientific !

Just discovered your channel brother 🤘good to be here
His philosophy on music, being true to yourself and working with your band is important.
Nuno, Gary, Pat, and Kevin have blown us all away with the three releases. I can’t wait for the album to arrive in June. I’ve been a fan since 1989.
