This is exactly how I ended up getting married because I told her I was not interested and she pursued me even harder and eventually I gave in and of course the marriage failed after a few years but I did get a son out of it that I've raised to be a good man so I guess there's that.
Truly an epic saga. I was fortunate to read this as a budding martial artist in my mid teens in the '80's! That version was published as a five part series and needless to say I couldn't wait to get my hands on the next as I made my way through. Hard to imagine a better depiction of an iconic life.

This book on the phone is perfect. I read it everywhere. It made every chaotic moment in my life more tranquil, i became so absorbed by the authors type of writing. It is one of my best reads if not the best but then again i havent read many books :D

Same. I’ve been putting off reading this book for nearly 3-4 months and then after this podcast 100 came out, I heard about 30 minutes in, shut the podcast off and set off on reading Musashi. I haven’t read a more engaging fiction novel since Harry Potter when I first read it back in early grade school. Finished the book in about a week with hundreds of quotes derived from it enough to fill another small book and then proceeded with this podcast. Man, life is good!

Well, he wouldn`t be the first veteran turned actor. Even Kevin Lacz from Seal Team 3, Task Unit Bruiser played himself in American Sniper. There is a long list of famous veterans and there are some celebrities that some folks would likely never would guess served. I remember how surprised I was to find out that the famous painter Bob Ross( who was most recently spoofed for the new Deadpool 2 trailer) was a veteran and that the actor Don Adams from the Get Smart television series from the 1960s and who also voiced Inspector Gadget on the popular animated series was a bad-ass US Marine Corps World War II veteran . You mentioned Sylvester Stallone`s The Expendables. I like and respect Randy Couture( who is also an veteran) but if Randy Couture can do it, so can Jocko. I`m not sure if Jocko would have any interest in Hollywood and acting unlike some UFC and WWE types and some veterans who have gone into acting or who may hold aspirations to go into acting( and Dwayne ''The Rock''Johnson, a former wrestler was the highest paid actor in the world in 2016 according to Forbes so I don`t see why someone with Jocko`s background couldn't have an acting career of some sort if wanted to have one). I could see him doing voice-overs or voice work-acting or because of his appearance and build, if we`re honest, he might be typecast in certain kinds of roles- physical, action-oriented stuff or even get typecast as a henchman or a villain and some actors are fine with being typecast, others want to ''stretch'' and prove their range as actors. But I tend to respect the ones like The Rock, Vin Diesel, Jason Statham, Mila Jovovich( who is female but who has had the same kind of acting career as the other aforementioned actors)etc, who know what they are good at and what their niche, if you will, is and accept their acting career for what it is. On the one hand, I understand the need for yelling and for screaming at people in the military. More so than most other professions and situations, it`s appropriate in it`s context and it serves a constructive and very logical purpose. Breaking people down to then build them back up, instilling discipline and motivation, strengthening and toughening folks up. If someone can`t remain cool, calm, collected, detached( and Jocko often talks about detachment)and focused on the task at hand when they`re being screamed at, having people all up in their face and in their personal space and being berated and under intense pressure in training, how are they going to be able to do it if they`re ever in combat? As Jocko has said in his podcast, the real test is when you get into combat. I remember the actor, Adam Driver, who has most notably been in the HBO series, Girls and Star Wars:The Force Awakens and the upcoming Star Wars: The Last Jedi as the new evil emissary of the dark side, Kylo Ren, saying that after he got out of the Marines, he had to learn( or perhaps, re-learn) how to behave and speak in certain situations and that yelling at people in normal civilian professions is not acceptable. I`m considering joining a reserve unit for the Army but I have wondered how many people who have served can turn that mentality and mindset on and off. I know some people can do it, seemingly almost effortlessly. I remember how from the amazing book, One Bullet Away by Nate Fick- who was a Captain in the Marines and served in Afghanistan and Iraq and a bunch of other places( and the book and HBO series of the same name, Generation Kill, were based on the time Fick`s platoon spent in Iraq in 2003 as ''the tip of the spear'' as part of the initial invasion of Iraq) talked about how he and his Marines could turn the violence on and off-like flicking a switch( Fick would make a great guest for the podcast, too). I`m sure it`s the same for Jocko, Leif Babin and other guys that they served with and many other service members, too but knowing how to do that and learning to lead with words as opposed to just yelling, like you said in referencing Jocko`s point, makes it easier to contribute as a re-assimilated member of society when you`re discharged. I think that would be a good idea if they make that part of people`s training when they`re going through training. Yes, the shouting has it`s purpose but teach them to lead with words, as well.
A beautiful book and an equally beautiful conversation. "At times like this, the world, which he had once thought so full of stupid people, seemed frighteningly large. But then life, Musashi would tell himself, is not a matter of logic. The sword is not logic. What was important was not talk or speculation but action. There may be other people much greater than he right now, but he, too, could be great!"
These podcasts get me through many hard days. When optimism isn't an option and results don't suffice as reward, these discussions are a gleam of light to been seen within the blackest abyss.
Having Tim ferriss on is just perfect. I really enjoyed listening, how the words are pronounced correctly and the knowledge of the Japanese culture he brought in was really cool .
I just finished reading the novel a few minutes ago, what an epic finale, I'm still processing it all. It has been the first novel of almost 1000 pages that I have read in my life. Finally I can resume the video and continue with this episode from the Jocko podcast that I had previously skipped. As someone who read this novel a long long time ago, and recently re-read (finished it tonight), I just stumbled upon this comment. I've loved this book for over a, and I'm glad others are finding it now as well. It contains all the necessary keys to life as a full human being, and is a damn good read.
Man, I am constantly struck while listening to these that Echo is deep water. He is as simple as a sweet child, and at the same time as complex as an old chess master. There are definitely layers. Musashi, the TaoTe Ching, and Sun Tzu all spoke about people like him being the goal. Keep on keeping on, EC.

This podcast is really intriguing. I enjoy it a lot!! I wonder if you would ever explore Takehiko Inoues story of Musashi called Vagabond. The telling is different but definitely a worthwhile read as well.
This book was made into a movie trilogy known in the west as the Samurai trilogy. Staring Toshiro Mifune directed by Hiroshi Inagaki. Part 1: Miyamoto Musashi. Part 2: Dual at Ichijoi Temple. Part 3: Dual at Ganryu Island. It won the Oscar for best international film.

I remember almost a year ago when I was going to watch this Podcast before Jacko recommended me to read the novel first. I already knew the book of five rings and was obsessed with Musashi. Yesterday I've finally finished this epic Book and now im watching my favorite podcasters talking about this book. It now makes so much sense thinking long term instead of seeking pleasure for it's own sake :) Now let's see what happens here in this 4 hour conversation im hyped.
A good friend of mine gave me this book while back and I was visibly shaken by the size of it. He told me to not even think about starting it until I had the next full week off from life bc how engulfed I would get. So when that time came I hesitantly cracked it and just straight mowed it down in 3 days. In the top 3 reads for me ever. I am a self admitted recluse and probably read 3 or 4 books a month, sometimes more. I compare everything I read to it no matter what genre, can’t help it. Please read this book.

This book looked quite intimidating at first, however once I got into it, it was a surprisingly fast read and an amazing read as well.

A brick of a book, and one of my favorites. First read Musashi as a kid and have read it every couple of years since then.
I remember almost a year ago when I was going to watch this Podcast before Jacko recommended me to read the novel first. I already knew the book of five rings and was obsessed with Musashi.
Yesterday I've finally finished this epic Book and now im watching my favorite podcasters talking about this book. It now makes so much sense thinking long term instead of seeking pleasure for it's own sake :) Now let's see what happens here in this 4 hour conversation im hyped.

I have put off watching this for many months because I needed to finish the book..... and tonight is the night I finally get to watch this. Stoked.
A good friend of mine gave me this book while back and I was visibly shaken by the size of it. He told me to not even think about starting it until I had the next full week off from life bc how engulfed I would get. So when that time came I hesitantly cracked it and just straight mowed it down in 3 days. In the top 3 reads for me ever. I am a self admitted recluse and probably read 3 or 4 books a month, sometimes more. I compare everything I read to it no matter what genre, can’t help it. Please read this book.

I am currently reading the book and listening to it via audible. Before I started reading it I came back to this podcast twice because I told myself I'd just listen to the podcast... but I'm glad I stopped myself when they suggest reading it first. I'm currently on chapter 6.

That was great. I'm gonna have to listen to this one again. So many places I didn't understand clearly. Musashi def deserves patience.
