Stanley: Trumpet Voluntary in D Major | Pep Organ

- John Stanley was an English composer and organist of great esteem, whose career was very successful despite being virtually blind from the age of two. Indeed, his talent for music was discovered at an early age - he was the youngest person to ever obtain a Bachelor of Music from Oxford University, at age seventeen.
Some of Stanley's best known works today are his voluntaries for the organ, which were published in three sets (1748, 1752, and 1754). This Trumpet Voluntary in D Major is certainly his most famous. With its friendly, warm melody that nonetheless conveys the perfect balance of celebration and ceremony, it is a masterly work.
The trumpet voluntary genre is widely adaptable, working well with a real trumpet or an organ with a trumpet stop. At St Mary's Cathedral, I chose to use the high-pressure Tuba, which shines above the rest of the entire organ combined.

An exceptional performance on ‘the king of instruments’ Titus. Bravo, Sir!👏🏻👏🏻

Thanks Jerry!
Tuuuubbbaaaaaa.
@@peporgan how many stops does that organ have and did you have a tuba in the pedal for bass ?
Sublime!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well done!!👍👍
Wonderful!!!....
Thank you Titus for sharing this magnificent trumpet tune on this great grand instrument.
Bless you 😊😊😊
Thanks Terrence!
Very nice, Titus! Thanks.
Magnificent piece, so beautifully played.
A wonderfully spirited performance: bravo, Titus! (You will be amused to know that in some anthologies of 'Old English Organ Music' I have, the editor says that the use of the tuba must be avoided as it is not a substitute trumpet stop! And that is because your 'average' English tuba stop has none of the fire and brilliance of a well voice trumpet, but plenty of volume projecting a full, round tone.) However, the St Mary's Cathedral 'Tuba' is certainly the right stop for this performance and it enables you to have a glorious full chorus as accompaniment. 'Rules' were made to be broken . . . and John Stanley would have loved the Letourneau organ and your playing of his music using this particular registration!
Hello Graham, why is it called "The Pep Organ?"
Very interesting to know !
A superb performance!
Thank you.
Beautiful performance. Lifted my spirits after an horrific three weeks
Magnificent!
Beautifull
After this week's inspirational bash I have decided, reluctantly, to forego my clumsy keyboard antics and take up the triangle. I feel sure it will open more doors than hitherto. But thank you Mr Grenyer for your choice of music and all the practising needed to perfect performance. I anticipate and welcome your new offerings with pleasure. I assume you are experiencing the joy (and burgeoning mastery in your case) of the organ's considerable corpus of works as much as us listeners.
Thank you sir! Yes, there are always new gems to discover! Or, old gems to polish :)
Stanley is very creative, perhaps the most one for organ after Purcell. He is one of my favorite ones.
Eccellente!
A classic and it sounds so grand here at SMC. I’m a fan of the Tuba!
Hello James, do you know why they are calling this the PEP ORGAN?
@@dalegrider716 not sure what you mean.
@@james.flores - have you noticed they call it "the Pep" organ? Also James, I miss your recordings.
@@dalegrider716 Yes. I think Titus did make a video on why it’s called Pep Organ. I’m still uploading…what have you been missing?
Absolutely brilliant !
I want this played at my funeral
Beautiful organ. Love the lay out of the stops. 4 manuals are cool. Lovely piece!
Nicely down, Titus.

Brilliant!
Well played sir
Thank you!
Very nice. I'd never heard of Stanley. He sounds reminiscent of Handel.
Excellent; thanks
Great!!
Nicely done. Great Tuba. Where is SMC?
Lovely spirited performance. Interestingly this organ appears to be tuned a little flat which takes away the sparkle.
EXCELENTE.
Where is this pipe organ?
I am in Victoria and would love to play it one day, along with my 15 year old daughter and 11 year old son who are both now brilliant pianists and pipe organists.
Loved your playing! It was excellent!!!!!!!!
Thank you Jonathan! It’s at St Mary’s Cathedral Sydney. Come up and visit next time the borders open!
very well played and interpreted. Is this a private adaptation or are there notes for it?
Nice! Any direction as to where I can find this score?
Oxford University Press publishes it as a Suite for Organ by John Stanley.
Is this a LeTourneau? SMC in Australia?
Yes!
Dudley Oakes is a good friend of mine! He was our organist/director for about 10 years in the 90s. St. John's Georgetown/DC
The Light and your skin makes it look sometimes like you where animated! But the tuba sounds ok nothing special
I heard better presentations. Too fast on the organ.please slow down.
As if musical taste is objective.
