For me tempo is everything on this song and they are spot on....a real gem.
Wonderful rendition. Clear part-playing, no rushed tempo and the musicians in balance. Well done :)
Exquisite trumpet is crisp and theorgan is not overbearing. best version i have heard.
I've already commented on this but if I persuade my bloke to marry me, willl you come and play it at the wedding. Just perfect. Thank you Jason and Sean. You are wonderful.
Absolutely beautiful rendition of one of my all-time favourite pieces of music. John Stanley has, like Heinrich Ignaz Biber, been largely forgotten in the welter of more obvious Baroque masters. Both seem to be making something of a come-back - certainly on here! Great relief! Thanks for a lovely clip of this superb Trumpet Voluntary.
The wedding song played in Lady Mary and Matthew Crawley's wedding in "Downton Abbey." Also played in Betty Warren's wedding in "Monalisa Smile."
This is so beautiful that you do not want the music to end!
I'm no musician but this stunning music and musicianship has blown me off my feet!!! Thank you both so much!
I love John Stanley! My personal favorite. This is beautiful.
Beautiful- love trumpet and organ music!
I keep playing it over and over... I just can't stop. This is amazing sir! Well done.
It's true what they say, organ music speaks to the soul.
Exquisite intonation and well-balanced acoustics between the two instruments. With the crisp dotted notes and the composer's beautifully-written interaction between the organ and trumpet, as well as glorious harmonies, the overall effect is superb.
The best version on UA-cam. Outstanding!
Jason and Sean, that was wonderful! Nicely done! Great piccolo trumpet sound and masterful organ playing!
Extremely well executed duet, definitely going into my Favorites!
Brilliant, ringing trumpet notes... 'spot on'!
Absolutely perfect! Beautiful sound and precision, both trumpet and ogran. Thanks
Magnificent! Piccolo trumpet and organ are such a wonderful combination - makes the hairs on my neck stand on end. Bravo to the both of you and thank you for posting.
Absolutely beautiful. Great rendition by you on the pipe organ and Jason on the trumpet. As others have said: Perfect tempo. John Stanley is a composer that not too many people have heard so kudos for putting up a video of this performance.
Thanks. The dual performance is qualitatively and rich with fine tonalities of the trumpet
Stunning organ and the performance outstanding!!!
I have Edward Tarr's rendition on vinyl, which I listened to this Sunday morning. I have no idea what “voluntaries” are, but this piece is exquisite and conveys a serene contentment.
Really great, seriously. So wonderful you didn't rush it, and let the music sing. Wow. :)
I agree to my ears this is an outstanding performance, speed about dead right.
Perfect tempo.
Fantastic rendition and great teamwork
Splendid rendition of an old favorite!
Thank you for the beauty and joy.
Just fantastic work here!
¡ojalá, la juventud de hoy valorara estas maravillas! y gracias por quienes las interpretan
Thank you! Beautifully done!
Nice trumpet sound, good balance with the organ, the acoustic is excellent.
Bravo !
I want this song to be played in my wedding as well!! :-).
Beautiful job, gentlemen!
Outstanding performance!
I love this piece.
Amazing ,,, wonderfull piece
GO SEAN! You OWN this!
Beautiful performance!
Well done guys. Sounds amazing
This is a lovely duet. Relax, breathe and enjoy. ;)
I love you guys...
And Jason too! nice work!
I'm no expert but I've often heard this piece and I like this
Excellent!
Gostei de mais, parabéns!
so great
I want this to my wedding ♥
Like Henry Purcell, Stanley is sometimes overshadowed by the baroque heavyweights- Bach and Handel.
I always wanted this to my wedding
Amazing...
Very Very Nice Bravo Well Done!!
That was great.
Marvellous!
beautiful
Just perfect! A wonderful piece of music played beautifully by two superb musicians. Proof positive (if you're a believer which I sadly am not) that "Man" has been touched by the hand of God.
John Stanley, op. 6, Voluntary V (IIª) in D Major
Very well controlled and measured trumpet flourishes. The guy on the organ controlled the pase very well, as I have head from organists. It's not an easy piece to play.
Geweldig
Maravilhoso
Bravissimo
The two instruments I play.
@jvdurante84 It started out as a Roosevelt in the 1890s but essentially this is a 1917 E. M. Skinner organ which was revoiced etc in 1992 by Bruce Shultz. 116 ranks/approx. 6800 pipes.
Jako u Cimrmana - dílo se zachovalo pouze ve zkomolené podobě u těch, kteří si výsledky jeho práce přivlastnili :-)))
y'all I got an assignment due in 2 days can yall help me on analysis of this
Does Jason have a channel im gunna check
what church was this recorded at? It's so grand.
Opus? 5,6,7?
Hey, I encountered this sort of music for the first time in Downton Abbey and I found it very enchanting. Could anyone suggest similar music, with the same instruments(trumpet and organ) or similar tunes ? Thanks.
1) Trumpet Volunteer by Jeremiah Clarke - there is a great version performed by Musica Antiqua New York & Mary Jane Newman
2) Entrance of the Queen of Sheba (organ transcription) performed by Denis Kaputany
Both are popular in English weddings and sure beats the usual Mendelssohn.
You can get both on iTunes.
Try anything by Tomaso Giovanni Albinoni. Have a listen to Handel's Water Music. Telemann is also very good.
Giuseppe Torelli, Alessandro Scarlatti. There is a wonderful 1971 recording by Deutsche Grammophon of soprano Barbara Schlick and trumpeter Adolf Scherbaum performing works for trumpet/voice by these composers, in one of which Barbara and the trumpet (played by Scherbaum of course) "sing" a duet which is, apparently, unique in musical composition. Unfortunately, I no longer have access to the recording, so can't recall in which work it occurs, or whether this was composed by Scarlatti or Torelli. If you can find the recording, it's worth a listen :-) www.discogs.com/Adolf-Scherbaum-Trompetenkonzerte-Kantaten/master/840216
what organ is this?
Very nice performance. This is the Henry Coleman arrangement rather than the John Stanley original from his '10 Voluntaries for harpsichord' Op 6?
what church is this? Where is it located? Is this a Skinner pipe organ? Dr. Jackson tells us more please?
This is at St. John's Episcopal Church in Stamford, Connecticut, USA. E.M. Skinner installed an organ there in 1917 but it has since then been refurbished a few times. Ultimately what I am playing in this video is a 1991 renovation by Bruce Shultz of Philadelphia. His aim and that of St. John's was to create an American classic upholding the tradition brought to perfection by the late G. Donald Harrison, of the Aeolian/Skinner Organ Company. I can tell you that it looks like, feels like and sounds like one in the room. 4 manuals, 100 stops, 116 ranks!
E . Power Biggs would have had QUITE a bit to say about THIS particular arrangement(smile).
superb perfomance, a bit slow but I understand needed for the exquisite trumpet detail
I thought this was superb.
This seems incredibly slow. I've always thought that this piece should be played "lively", but not fast. Never-the-less, a well executed performance.
+TheDeepCSailor this is a good tempo. and faster and it would be too fast and blurred together
what organ is this?
Contrary to the opinions below, I think most people play this piece too bloody fast, and I find this tempo amazingly perfect! At this tempo the trumpet ornaments stand out instead of being a blur. Exceptional rendition in my opinion. Thanks to Mr. Covey and Dr. Jackson; well done gentlemen!
