You know we're screwed if the CDC answers every question with "We don't know".
March 2020 ~ This comment has aged like wine.
Horrible, horrible wine...
Got too agree, if the CDC doesn't even know what the Hell is going own, man we in for some serious problems and that's what makes this opening so freakin scary and wicked when even those who should know don't even know!!!😬😬😬😎
It doesn't help if the CDC knows. The US government ALWAYS LIES. There are no exceptions.
Lol good call
Avram Barr Shekelsteinspanbergblat what exactly do you think the CDC is?
They’re a federal agency. They are the US government.
10/ 10 movie intro.
Although never going to surpass the original. This opening is excellent. Because what we get is: The disease. The panic. The epidemic. The media. The breakdown of society in blind panic.
But the best parts are Cash singing the song as though saying "this was always going to happen", and the fact that most of the footage is just man as it is now.
Oh, and go and check up on the blood streaks. I believe real blood was used, not cgi. I can't be bothered checking, but supposedly the guy responsible is a bit clever at titles.
*****
I don't think it does surpass it, as the social commentary isn't particularly of any note. It's still a damn enjoyable romp, mind!
For me, the original is as much about consumerism and society being "sheep", as it is about zombies. We get to see people from different backgrounds either finding common ground, or clashing through opportunism. (As we see with the bikers).
I did enjoy the extras on the remake though. Particularly the view point of the gun shop owner. The characters for the remake are for most parts, not very likeable or written poorly. The effects for the remake are very good though. I could moan about "fast zombies" but it never bothered me too much. I still think "28 Days Later" (although a smaller film) has better characterisation. So I guess I'm really saying, I still like the film, but it has a few things that aren't great. Thanks for replying Quentin!

Johnny Cash’ lyrics mixed with these images go together perfectly. No other horror movie comes close in way of brilliance
I agree, that killer opening scene followed by one of the best credit sequences in cinema history is just perfection.
I agree that it's a fantastic titles sequence, but no other horror movie coming close to its brilliance? Not at all sure about that one.
This is the scariest opening to any horror movie.

"The Howling" (1981) is not bad either, not forgetting of course "The Omen" (1976), "Halloween" (1978) or "Psycho" (1960) but those of course only for haunting themes not images.
".....God, they're here." That part always gets me! Such a harrowing, great ending quote to the scene. One of the scariest movie openings in the history of horror.

An experimental vaccine that they’re trying to force on people like the end times. Ironic they also dropped a news article saying the vast majority of the population will be infertile by 2041 from “plastic drinking/eating utensils” when we know it’s the vaccine. Disturbingly enough real footage is mixed in with footage filmed for the film. At times its really really fucked how hard it is to tell what's real and what's not. Perfect opening
The most perfect opening with the greatest song choice in any horror movie ever made. Even to this day, it still schools the rest.
By far one of the best openings to a zombie apocalypse film. Showing both the rise of the zed infection spreading faster than they can handle along with the images of mass panicked crowds rioting, the destabilization of governments, all of it a perfect storm of global collapse and a perfect song for this masterpiece. Like everyone else watching this, I still get goosebumps watching it.
I always wanted a movie to show us the collapse of society. It's always after or a few clips of it happening.
And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts,
And I looked and behold: a pale horse.
And his name, that sat on him, was Death.
And Hell followed with him.💀💀💀

I've loved the superior original.
Ever since I was a kid
Burp Reynolds the original movie wasn't superior. I've seen both and I think they did a pretty good job remaking the movie. The original was great for its time..
Joe Mercado It's considered a classic of the zombie genre. If it wasn't, it wouldn't have been remade. You know, like "RoboCop". This is considered as good. I'm not saying this as merely my opinion. I'm saying so from critics around the world.
You're welcome to think otherwise of course. That's your opinion. 95% approval rating for the 1978 film on Rotten tomatoes. Compare that with 75% for the remake. *By the way, if you say it's not as good because it was made in 1978. You're missing the point completely.
i hated it when i was a child but now i love it by the terror that once made me hate it.
I love this opening. Scary and realistic.
And it's one of my favorit Zombie films ever.
Those are the same reason I like it
This movie is reason why as child I was scared of zombies but now as of today I got use to it
The music goes so perfectly with this
The first 10 seconds of this opening set up what is a masterpiece of an opening sequence to one of the greatest zombie movies of all time. Can see the influence of 28 days later mixed in with it aswel. Not a zombie movie but a movie about a viral infection that turns people into what these zombies move like. Genius.
I think it's crazy how Zack worked with James Gunn on this film
And later Zack Snyder made Justice League and James Gunn made the suicide squad
Amazing opening credits. I love this movie. This scene is so well done - eerie, unsettling, and realistic.
“And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him” was such a raw line to end the introduction on. Truly one of the zombie movies of all time.
One thing I absolutely love about this film is how there's no real explanation for the virus, it just appears out of nowhere and manages to rapidly spread to every single country in just under 24 hours. Almost the entirety of humanity completely wiped off the face of the planet in a single day. (This isn't explained in the film, this is from the DVD bonus features)
It isn't a virus

Can't help but think if the apocalypse really did happen, news stations would cover it live. Well done on the movie opening!
I can imagine hundreds of anchorpeople worldwide like, "people are *EATING* other people! I'm not going out there!"
"Listen, er, I've lost the tele-prompter."
A banal sentence that manages to convey so much. Especially just after, "The following shelters have been compromised."
The most disturbing part to me is a government representative saying, we don't know. because they will never openly admit that they are not in control of the situation .
🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡
in the dvd bonus feature there is the part where the president give an uplifting speech about how with hope they will get through it stronger than before lol, president was just bullshitting

2004 Dawn of the Dead is the best zombie movie ever period. Thought about it hard and I just can’t think of another zombie movie that compares.. The very light sense that this zombie apocalypse is a biblical event and that when there is no more room in hell the dead will walk the earth.. I find it terrifying, no explanation, just sprinting screaming zombies in every corner of the world. Extra points for the cameos of some of the actors that were in the original Dawn of the dead to.. That opening credit sequence always makes me uneasy, brilliant. Film had great acting and writing to, the cast was fantastic.. Gotta give it to Zack Snyder for directing the best zombie movie ever but this was one of James Gunn’s earlier big projects to with the screenplay and now all James Gunn does is make excellent movies.. Who knew Snyder was always good with movie intros/opening credits
the parts i find most especially creepy is 0:43 and 1:25-1:30. the first of which you can't tell which ones the zombies/walkers/monsters whatever are. and the second where the truck is driving into that crowd of people, whether it's because the driver was turning or everybody else in the crowd had already turned and he was trying to avoid them.
+Kevin Chacko the one on 1:30 is possibly a clip from a massive demonstration in my country from 1998 Indonesia May tragedy.
Cliffto really? what happened?
Kevin Chacko a dark history we try to forget, it's basically a reformation transition, but the impact was huge. Almost the whole town was on riot. This all I can say cause it's more terrifying a lot of innocent people died in name of politic :(
+Kevin Chacko Actually, all the people were not turned, they were getting out of the way of the truck, and the driver perhaps panicked.
Nattaya Wheeler well, in the movie, supposedly everything happening in the opening credits has something to do with the dead/zombies whatever. could be the driver was being attacked by his passenger. besides, you can't see the faces of anyone in the crowd...
Screw everyone who said this movie was garbage lol I've always considered these scenes cinematic gold.
It's a remake. Of course there's gonna people who will crap on it, but this is definitely one of the better remakes out there imo. I'd say i even prefer this over the original because it feels less slower and more serious.
