  • I review, breakdown and explain The Wonderful Story Of Henry Sugar. I discuss the Netflix movie by Wes Anderson based on the Roald Dahl story and the true meaning of the ending. I react to the characters and cast such as Benedict Cumberbatch, Ralph Fiennes, Dev Patel, Richard Ayoade, and Ben Kingsley. I also give my theories and prediction on the second movie, The Swan.

In other words Henry Sugar could probably not sleep since even if he closed his eyes it was as if he were awake seeing the surrounding environment. He had condemned himself to perpetual vigil.

... I think you misinterpreted the movie. Him seeing a blood clot was a way of the author to say that it was a real story.
I don't remember exactly what was said, but it was along these lines: "If it was not a real story this is how it would end..."
Also, it was explained outright why he lost his excitement for gambling.

Thanks for this analysis. I read the stories the day before I watched these new Wes versions. The films are great, but I felt I had a better appreciation for what Wes did after reading the original first. I was astounded by how well he did these and how reminded us that these were short stories. Massive thanks for your take in this.

I belive you rushed the video a bit, since you said that the motivation for Henry Sugar's actions was him seeing a blood cloth in himself.
That was supposed to be the ending if the story was false.
I hate to see a video essay like this lose it's credibility from an error like the one you made.

It felt like a pointless story that was leading up to something but didn’t. And it’s mainly for people to just ask “how was that filmed? How was that shot? How did they memorize those lines?” But it doesn’t actually add much to the main point

The filming/stage aspect added a sense of doubt to the story. I.e. The yogi “floating” on a box. The actors playing multiple characters. Realizing that the only thing we should not doubt is the magic of someone becoming a better person.

If the incident is real then I can say with certainty that our country India has lost many things which people should see. Our people are the owners of many powers. This country has been ruled for thousands of years but The knowledge that the people of this country have, will not be found in any other country. In many of our tribal areas, there were people who knew 106 languages, ranging from languages of different countries. The language of many animals was also present. The name of one such person is the great Tantya Bhil. He is known as the tribal and Indian Robin Hood. When he was arrested by the British government, it is said that A. He got an offer to become a special advisor to Queen Victoria and he took it. This is a recognition and the second recognition is that of his powers and his knowledge and the respect that people had for him. In the name of a revolutionary who sacrificed his life for the tribal people and his country but was forgotten by this country because he was a Dalit, lower caste, a tribal. ❤

I enjoy theater, but I hate monotone, unemotional, joyless performances in order to try to fit an aesthetic. So this was "alright," but it felt like it's intended for a "higher" class of people. It was just fast, rushed, distracted, kind of unclear.

I WANT to like Wes Anderson's movies, I always try to, they are so gorgeous to look at.
But the acting in them is always so arch and so emotionless that it drives me insane. One expression and one tone of voice the whole way through. There's just no joy in his movies for me, it makes everything in them feel fake and contrived, when the characters say something emotional I never believe it, it feels like a parody to me. And it's especially painful because I've loved this story and wished for a movie version of it for years, and I hoped it would be a joyful, exuberant movie like the story felt when I first read it.
