Thank you! This is the first prog rock assessment video I've seen which gives little snippets of music for those of us who are not familiar with all the bands.
The (Moving Waves) album by Focus will stomp on quite a few of the albums in your first series. I haven't heard any of the other "honorable mentions" yet but I wouldn't be surprised if there were some other really good ones too.
Not sure why the cutoff in '69 starting with King Crimson. I would have started with the first concept album and one of the first Progressive Rock records, Days of Future Past by the Moody Blues.
I'm thinking 1966 and Freak Out Frank Zappa and the Mothers Of Invention was the first Prog release to the main stream- note Prog is not a UK only affair
Great selection !!! I would also mention some German bands that also stood out very well: TRIUMVURAT (Spartacus, 1975); ELOY (Power and Passion, 1975); JANE (Together, 1972); KRAFTWERK (Autobahn, 1974); FRUMPY (Frumpy 2, 1971).
Not my list but certainly interesting. It of course depends a lot on your personal history and what you're acquainted with. I really love that you include some Italian and other non-Anglosaxon progrock.
It´s a good and coherent list indeed but at the same time surprised for the absence of The Dark Side Of The Moon, some Gentle Giant masterpieces, Wobbler´s From Silence To Somewhere and Focus Hamburger Concerto.
This is a very appriciable selection, with a lot of well known (and much less known) gems. Personally I would have dropped Marillion (and in case one Jethro Tull record) to make room for at least one Gentle Giant album. The Honourable Mentions are certainly worthy... some of them (Area above all) would have certainly deserved a position in the proper ranking.
Definitely great list all classics are there, but I am personally missing newer great albums like Anglagard - Hybris or Flower Kings - Stardust... or anything from Transatlantic, Arena, Iluvatar, Discipline and many, many, many more 🙂. Whenever there is video with top X prog albums it include mostly only 70's classics...
I agree with what at least one other has said, this should of been titled, "My favorite" not "The Greatest" 40 bands. That said, I look forward to checking out the few bands I'm unfamiliar with and reconnecting with a few not heard in much too long. I did appreciate there were the 3 from Rush but brother, why the pass on 2112? Where's Crime of the Century? No Kansas or Gentle Giant? Again, too subjective to calling it the greatest, however, I would love to see your list of your favorite top 10 ranked!
Sostanzialmente condivido. Le honorables mentions andrebbero inserite tout court. Three friends dei Gentle Giant pure. Di Animals mi piace solo la copertina avrei scelto Atom Heart Mother
I'm thinking 1966 and Freak Out Frank Zappa and the Mothers Of Invention was the first Prog release to the main stream- note Prog is not a UK only affair Good that Camel and Soft Machine/ Matching Mole is there but I would add Sebastian Hardie - Four Movements, Gong -Angels Egg and Ariel -A Strange Fantastic Dream
Gentle giant the greatest most most epic legendary unique innovative genius band ever This just prooves they are the most obscenely criminally underrated band ever.
"Storia di un minuto" is a great debut album but is far from being PFM's best album. Consider instead "Per un amico" (or "Photos of ghosts"), "L'Isola di Niente" (The world became the world") or "Chocolate Kings".
Love Rush also, glad to see 3 albums of their's on this list. Actually thought 2112 should have been on there as well. ELP was on this list with Tarkus.
Grazie ..avrei inserito anche Aria di alan Sorrenti molto progressive …e visto che c’è Third (soft machine) anche The end of an ear di Robert Wyatt che è …oltre il prog … …si tratta comunque di opinioni personali 😊
Tales from Topographic Ocean (Yes) are missing and I would add a couple more albums by VDGG. Nice that you mentioned Soft Machine 3 and didn't mention Gentle Giant, who are so overrated 🥱
It’s your list, so these are comments rather than complaints: 1) There are several albums listed I wouldn’t call prog rock, and 2) a list of prog rock albums that doesn’t have any Brian Eno seems suspect to me.
Eloy - Ocean, The Mars Volta - de-loused in the comatorium, Dream Theater - Metropolis Pt. 2 Scenes From A Memory Fates Warning - A Pleasant Shade Of Gray Haken - The Mountain Marillion - Misplaced Childhood Maudlin of the Well - Part The Second Opeth - Blackwater Park Pain Of Salvation - Remedy Lane Porcupine Tree - Fear Of A Blank Planet Queensryche - Operation Mindcrime Riverside - Second Life Syndrome Steven Wilson - The Raven That Refused to Sing Transatlantic - The Whirlwind
"Anything before october 1969 is not taken into considederation" is very sad statement. I'm sure you would find lots of wonderful prog bands albuns before that.

Rick Wakeman - Journey to the Centre of the Earth 1974, Triumvirat - Illusions on a Double Dimpe 1974, Chris Squire - Fish Out of Water -1975 and much more. Note: Italian records in the video are superfluous, grettings

Avete tralasciato i Gentle Giant, gli ELP, i Gong… messo solo 2 dei tanti capolavori dei Genesis… per mettere dischi sconosciuti e altri famosi che sono progressive per modo di dire!
It's sacrilege to exclude Supertramp's Crime of the Century or PFM's Per un amico. Your list is replete with several Italian albums and you have the gall to exclude PFM?
I’m fine with the most -but whats so great about Red by KC? Everyone hypes it; I still don’t get it - i tried it out time and time again, to me it’s disharmonic and noisy (don’t get ge wrong, i‘m a great admirer of Gentle Giant, and love complex structures!)
Not sayin' I fon:t agree with some of your choices, but, this should be titled "My favourite 40 prog rock albums, because this is certainly not the greatest 40 in my opinion😊
my opinion is that it is incorrect to single out 40, 50 or even 100 best prog rock albums, because thanks to fate and the musicians, we can enjoy thousands of great prog rock albums, and their number is only increasing to this day, and I am also the happy owner and listener of about 2,500 such records. Thank you! This is the first prog rock assessment video I've seen which gives little snippets of music for those of us who are not familiar with all the bands.
Glad you put Zappa's One Size Fits All on the list. Been arguing for years that it is a progressive rock album. Interesting list.

Great album, but more pop than Prog.

Spartacus by Triumvirat 1975

Place 1 to 9 Gentle Giant (you can't count the last two albums) Next: Place 40 Yes Fragile
The most overrated of all prog bands. Complexity is not a quality in itself.
I could see Kansas on this list with "Song for America", "Left Overture", and "Point of no Return".
KANSAS...the first album is the blueprint..good place to start
Good list. How about Triumvirat-Spartacus, and Gentle Giant-Free Hand.
Bravo Harmonium, la fierté du Québec.
