Kansas is so underrated in my opinion. The thing about Kansas was composing great songs. The guys you mentioned are great musicians, but Kansas has the best songs in my opinion. Their musical talent is without question some of the best progressive rock has ever seen. Listen to 2 for the Show and just let it sink in. It’s incredible how great they really were.

Glad you mentioned Mike Ratledge. Soft Machine doesn't get enough credit for advancing (and even originating) progressive rock. I saw them with Jimi Hendrix in 1968, and came away extremely impressed. Their first album is one of my favorites of all time.
Tony Banks was a master composer too! This makes him my all time favorite! 1970’s Genesis was so emotional, creative and amazing. Today we have bands like Porcupine Tree to enjoy (and Steven’s solo work), but Tony is still my all time favorite.

My number one, is not shared among so many prog fans - it's Nursery Cryme by Genesis - this one is just so emotional, compared to their (still very very good) later works. Seven Stones from this album, has an amazing odd emotional/melancholic beauty, with the most fantastic mellotron/guitar/drums final - almost driving me to tears. Trespass and Trick are 2&3, Lamb, Foxtrot and "In the Court..." by KC are next.
I would say he is a great composer, one of very best keyboard composers of prog rock. His technique is not as high, though, specially comparing with most of those mentioned - which probably gives us more kudos for his compositions... So, in short, he was better at composing than playing (not to say that he wasn't / isn't a good keyboard player)
Hugh Banton should be in here. He was playing bass pedals at the same time and the ain't many who can do that. Plus, everything he played was brilliant.

Mark Kelly from Marillion should probably be somewhere in the top-10. Extremely talented, has a great sound, and his compositions are exactly what the given song needs without being over-the-top. He is probably my favorite along with Tony Banks, though I love me some Wakeman and Emerson too.

Mark Kelly from Marillion should probably be somewhere in the top-10. Extremely talented, has a great sound, and his compositions are exactly what the given song needs without being over-the-top. He is probably my favorite along with Tony Banks, though I love me some Wakeman and Emerson too.
