The thing I love about these old coaches is the sound . They create a very special and very soporiphic feeling, and sound waaaay faster than they actually are!

I love night trains. But, sadly, there are now few night trains in Japan. One of the reasons that we can stay at comfortable hotels for low prices these days.

5:50 I remember as a small child of around 4 years I was so damn scared of the space between wagons. I would refuse to walk through it and my father had to carry me over.

Great video! Thello is definitely my go-to choice for heading to Venice, I've taken it 3 times since 2013. The quality of the trains has really improved over the years though some things never change - I remember being late into Venezia Santa Lucia on my first journey! Didn't bother me much as I could reach my hotel by the time check-in was open. But better communication about the delay reasons would be appreciated. Train crew are always a laugh, usually hanging out in the restaurant car in the middle of the night and pleasant to chat to. I think the best piece of advice I got about Thello was to go in with reasonable expectations - and to not assume that an overnight train from Paris to Venice is going to be the Venice-Simplon Orient Express!

On most night trains you don't set an alarm, but the conductor wakes you up before arrival. I don't know about Thello though, but that's the standard. Therefore, if the train is late, you will continue sleeping.

The information card in the couchette indicated that they cannot guarantee the wake-up call. So that probably wouldn't work here!

Thanks for your videos I do find them very useful. I normally travel with a bicycle for cycle camping. When you do a train walk through and find some bicycle storage places would you include them in your video please. Its very useful for cyclists to understand what type of bike storage facilities are available before boarding. Thanks and keep up the good work, Tim cyclist from Ireland.

I enjoyed seeing your overnight rail experience. I did 3 trips to Europe with a daughter as her travel companion per request from my wife and had my best trips ever. We frequently rode the rails and we have been to Gare de Lyon for a trip to NICE. In 2016 my daughter and I did an overnight German train from Munich to Amsterdam for the start of a day there, but I happened to read it had been discontinued a few months after our trip due to high speed rail getting you to places in Europe so fast. I enjoyed seeing your video. From St. Louis

This route was one of the many I traveled back in the early 90's, when it was a shared service operated by SNCF and FS. I seem to remember, on those bottom bunks, if you put your hand underneath the back and pull it forwards, and then push back - and the back rest drops back out of the way - to give more space on the lower bunk :) Handy for you to know if you ever find yourself finding that train again!!

Couchettes seem to be similar to roomettes on Amtrak trains in the US, except on Amtrak you never share one with a stranger. Do any European trains have the equivalent of an Amtrak roomette (smaller than a bedroom, suitable for one person)?

@3:30 regarding the car numbers: in Europe overnight trains often exchange through coaches to offer direct connections between multiple cities. Thus, the coach numbers have to be unique between all the corresponding trains.
Also the trains dont run in the same configuration every day; there might be groups of coaches that e.g. only run on weekends - those will often get a separate block of numbers as well.

  • @ADtranzakias

Greece had also a night train with number 504/505. It was running between Athens (capital) and Thessaloniki (Greece's second biggest city). The distance is 504 km and the journey was about 6 to 7 hours. Also in the end of the train was the car wagons so you could take your car with you. Unfortunately that train was cancelled in 2011 due to economical crisis. Today 504/505 has replaced by 600/601 which is a simple train.

if that was second class, third class must be riding a treadmill to power the train. lmao

Stupid comment. An the guy is very tall, so he would have been wiser to book first class.

I don't understand, Why did this Train pass trough switzerland, and not stop? I have never seen a Thello passing trough Switzerland. Does it only pass trough Switzerland in the night?

Unless you’re on a very tight schedule I personally don’t care about perhaps an hours delay but any longer then you should be compensated with either a partial refund or money off a further trip on the train

I believe some Eastern European sleepers book singles that are the same gender in a 4-bed compartment like yours, or two couples.
You're young enough to be able to sleep on a hard bed that is too short, but I'd be better off in a seat that reclined a bit.
It's nice to have the restaurant car, but that meal was perhaps five times its supermarket retail cost. I suppose you were paying for your share of having a restaurant car rather than having it part of the ticket price.
Still, you can walk around more on a train than a plane, and there's often something to see when you look out the window. You aren't crammed in with 200 other people, and the pace is more relaxing. There IS a place for these overnight trains.

No, it's coach number, Thello has his own system to number coaches (on daily services are 4x).
Of course on national services (Intercity, Frecciabianca, Frecciargento and Frecciarossa) coaches are numbered 1, 2, 3, 4, etc.
