- Are cheap USB MIDI cable interfaces any good? The market is absolutely saturated with low priced USB DIN5 MIDI interfaces and most of them are compatible with iDevices, such as the iPad and iPhone. They do seem like a good budget option for mobile musicians looking to get a small portable DIN5 USB midi interface, to use with their favourite portable synthesizer. However, there's something you need to consider before you buy one ... there’s something called SYSEX ...

Mad respect for letting people know right at the start of your video what exactly your going to be discussing. Massive 👍
I’ve had to learn it the hard way 😂😅 Thank you for watching! 👍🏼💚
Thank you so much! Very professional and good looking video
Brilliant as always.
I love that you leave some of the balls-ups in, it makes the whole thing so much more fun.
That Arche add on your video looks cool!
Thanks for the video. This one will help some of my buddies out who are just starting
Dude you just single-handedly solved thousands of musicians problems this is a bloody minefield with these cheap cables and you've just explained it perfectly❤
Been trying to download patches into my microkorg pulling my hair out because I bought a $12 USB midi cable with a little treble clef emblem on the small black connector box, no luck so now I've just ordered the Roland um1
Great work, Buddy! 😀 👊
Dude i came from instagram! THX for this iPad interface vídeo ... Love u!
Great stuff!
Great video Jakob, recently I started to use my iPhone as a second keyboard, And had some surprises to do this work.
Firtst, my nord electro 3 doesn’t support transfer midi trough USB port. It is used just to transfer sound. So I bought a not expensive cable and it doesn’t work, after lose time, bought that Roland midi to usb and it is working perfectly.
I am using a camera adapter lightning, hub energized, the Roland cable and an Behringer uca 222 to send the audio to the speakers.
Thank you a lot, through your Chanel I found lots of interesting apps and I am using some of them. It changed the way I play the keyboards, thank you, greetings from Brazil!
Jakob. I have a video request... please make a 25 minute video on SYSEX! That’s the 1 aspect of midi that I’m completely lost. I promise I’ll “strike the like”... as always!
Thanks. That explains why my $13 adapter fell over as soon as I used mod wheel or pitch bend years ago.
Ended up with a Behringer Uphoria which works great and has audio as well as MIDI, at least on my laptop. Needs a powered usb hub for use with iPad.
I purchased several cheap midi usb cable for about $4 several years ago before iPad and the still work perfectly and have a little data box in the middle
First time I ever heard about SYSEX protocols was when I bought a Volca FM and read you can transfer Yamaha DX7 SYSEX files to it. Still haven't gotten around to getting the files and software to see what I can load up or save. I do have a pretty cheap USB-MIDI cable. Maybe I oughta look into getting a new one.
Has the cello always been a key there??? I’ve never noticed it in other videos... man I would love to jam on one of those, and would love to hear you live loop with it.. thanks again for all the videos family...
If you have an audio interface with MIDI, then you can connect it to your lightning device via the camera connect kit.
Jakob, I tend to buy $5 ones. Just got a bunch of old school Roland 5 PIN MIDI DIN Cables too , $5 a piece
My USB to MIDI adapter was $8 on Amazon. Works GREAT EXCEPT for SYSEX like Transferring Patches from Dexed to my Volca FM
Useful info Jakob! I am also looking for cheap (=small, meaning to use on mobile environment) audio interface WITH midi. To connect synth (Moog, MikroFeeak) to iPad, play midi to/from Gadget and get audio back to DAW. Any recommendations (like Zoom U-24 maybe?)
I don't recall the manufacturer's name, but I use a USB to Lightning MIDI cable I bought on Amazon. Plug and play.
Hello Bro i have 2 isues regarding midi . How can i show u the video for the problem?
amazin
I am looking for a usb midi cable to substitute my audio interface (w midi) because I upgraded the audio interface but it does not have midi. No matter the price do you have a recommendation? I just require it to work properly through all channels and functions (and it would be great to work in a usb hub :) )
I know this is for iPhone but I was asking for computer, there is nothing out there explaining or testing lool
Here’s How To Move Things Up - Can you Hum Jakob? If You can expand your diaphragm and hum from the bottom of Your Tummy Tum - adjust Your Hum Until You Resonate - You’ll know - You’ll feel it - Record your Hum - copy it. say 6 times 😉 it doesn’t matter how many - the more the merrier - Open a new song in your DAW - Now overlay Your Hum, you’ll get the spacing sorted real Quick - add a little reverb and some bass and Change The World - simple as - I don’t do complicated - Much Love ☀️❤️ ps play it continuously through Your Sound System
Hello Jakob,I have a question. I am an old guy and a I used an old Roland JV30 keyboard and a Alesis MMT8. Is it possible to use the MMT8 and trigger iOS iPad instrument?any info or video link ? I love your channel. 🙏
The Alesis MMT8? It’s a sequencer right? You need either a Class compliant USB MIDI interface or a Sound interface that carries legacy DIN-5 midi ports for the connection(s).
.
If you want to trigger synth plugins (AUv3) then I’d recommend loading them up into an app like AUM. You could set up all your midi connections in there and the. You also then have a modular mixer for doing the lvl mix for the plugins etc.
.
I’d still recommend that you get something a bit more pricey than these cheap USB MIDI ones. If you’re low on cash then look at the Roland UM-ONE mk2.
.
And to be honest, you might be better of with a sound interface for the iPad/iPhone altogether. Easier to get a good sound out of your iDevice that way instead of relying on headphones. If you’re low in cash then have a look at the Steinberg ur22 mk2. It has DIN-5 MIDI In and Out ports.
Jakob Haq thank you. I do have a m audio class compliant midi/audio interface. I so new to the iPad and appreciate your help. Thank You.
As for the conclusion, which midi interface should I buy?
Some of that crappy copies doesn't even have a optocoupler. I know because I have one of these.
I like that you are not the man that say: Buy this or buy that. :-)
But i mis an example fromthat you say: This works for me. :-)
OK are there in your other videos a gear that you tested and that works?
I have some like an OLD USB Adapter from a wireless m-Audio KEyboard that has
Midi IN + OUT and an smal iConnectivity Device for (80€ ) that has perfect solution for
iOS (lightningcable, 2 x Midi IN/OUT and 2 USB Ports for up to 2 PC/MACs.
But sometimes i wish to connect an UNO and 2 Volcas and an MF to my Keyboard and wish me more flexability and a cheap but working USB/Midi Host Adapter. I Tested an 60€ thingy, but it works good. And an Host from Kenton or other costs over 100€. Thats sad.
I feel like this vid was made for me. I just picked up a Volca Fm and my current midi interface is not working sending the patches from dexed. I wonder if this one will work for me. Thanks Jakob. 👍👍👍🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
As I mentioned in the video, the Roland UM-ONE mk2 is the one everybody seem to recommend as being functional with everything SYSEX.
@@JakobHaq alrighty, thanks Jakob!!
Let me know how it goes. 👍🏼
@@JakobHaq I will! Thanks again for all you do Jakob!!
Jakob, it worked!! My UM ONE MK2 came in yesterday and It worked. Thanks so much again!
Hi Jakob, whenever I watch your vids I get the delightfully homemade “commercial break in 5, 4 ...” but then I don’t actually see any commercials. I’d be happy to watch one or two so you can make extra dough but no commercials play. You sure it’s all set up correctly?
You should be getting a commercial unless you’ve got a UA-cam premium account, which removes adds.
Jakob Haq yeah I don’t have UA-cam premium and there’s no ads, strange. 🤷♂️
Jacob The same happend for me also. No youtube premium subscription either.
Don’t know if youtube can skip commercials if no advertiser has bought spots that cover this kind of video/view count/viewer type/etc
All I know is that I am really mad at apple for removing the MIDI connectors from the iPhone 26.
