This video is just what I needed! It relieved a lot of danger and insecurities for my family and myself. COULD NOT BELIEVE that a rubber Hammer was involved in the fix. Worked perfectly and provided music to my ears as the immobilizer clicked into action when the key was inserted into the ignition switch! I had on two or three occasions left the key in the ignition and covered it with a towel or handkerchief as I made a quick run into a store or two - very stressful!
Wooooo! That was it! I sprayed WD-40 in through the top cover, which by itself did not loosen the actuator, but I gave the bottom a good whack with a dead blow and instant success! THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS!!!!
Oh my, thanks for this video. I've been struggling with this problem for the past few days, thinking of it as a complex electronics fault, measuring voltages and trying to follow circuit diagrams. I had narrowed down the problem to the steering column but never in a million years would I have guessed a rubber hammer to be the right tool to fix it. It didn;t work on the first whack, but another two more and it's now working like a charm. The car had been at the garage for repairs for some six weeks for the front suspension and some other unrelated issues and when I went to collect it the key would not turn. We figured out that disconnecting the battery lets me turn the key but every time the key is removed I had to disconnect the battery again - that is until I found out about the fuse 18 remedy, which achieves the exact same result with much less hassle. It is still a bit of a mystery why it stopped working exactly when I went to collect it as they had driven it around and just parked it where I found it about an hour before I arrived. There are another two things that went wrong at the same time but for the life of me I cannot imagine how they could possibly be related. First it kept warning that the tailgate was open, when in fact it wasn't. In fact even the light in the boot went off when I close it but it still kept giving me the warning on the dashboard. This particular problem disappeared eventually on its own. The second is that the GPS stopped working, the navigation system just keeps telling me to wait a minute and when I check the signals on iBus I don't find the GPS messages that are usually there. I don't actually use the navigation system as Google maps is much better but I'm still curious as to why it failed at the same time.
I am so happy to hear it worked and sounds like you are on your way to getting everything else sorted. Keep me posted and let's keep these beautiful machines on the road!
I bought a really nice 2006 Range Rover that had a few issues. You could start and drive the car and the key would not come out of the ignition. I pulled the boot around the console and found a handful of pennies that got wedged in the mechanism. pulled them all out and it would allow the key to come out. 2nd problem, you just showed me and it worked like a charm. That column is about 6k to have changed out from the folks at the Landie Stealership. this thing has it quirks but they are suppose to be really great 4x4. I have land cruiser and jeep, but against my better judgement I got this thing for like 2k. Thank you for the video, it really was helpful.
@jamzDOTnet - Cars, DIY, and Adventures don't worry, I'm going to be hitting you up regularly. I just bought a 2008 range rover 3.6tdv8 and I'm having all sorts of issues with power draw.
I have a question. A week ago I was driving the rover on a long journey. Just as I was getting close to home the car completely died in the worst possible place. I just managed to get it over 5 lanes of traffic and into a lay by. The recovery guy initially thought I had ran out of fuel because the gauge usually gets stuck between a quarter to a half of a tank. But he put some diesel in it and after initially starting it cut out pretty quick. I had it towed to a mechanic and he ran a lot of diagnosis, but after charging the battery the car fired up fine. He has now diagnosed power draw when the engine is off and gave it back for me to book in with an auto electrician. The battery dies after around a day and a half of sitting. Anyway, my question is do you think the car dying in the middle of a long run is because of the low battery, or do I have something like an intermittent fuel pump issue? Initially the car still cranked but the battery completely died not long after.
Many thanks for sharing this, it just worked for me on my 2006 HSE. It had been sitting for almost 9 months while the mechanics dawdled on some work it needed done, just picked it back up last week and it had this problem. I'm assuming it's a combination of low battery for an extended period (they had let it run dead multiple times), and maybe just moisture in the air with it sitting in the same position for such a long time? In any case, 3 smacks with a rubber mallet and then some WD-40 for good measure, and it's holding so far. Nice to know that the old advice that a hammer, some WD-40 and duct tape (I'll find a use for the tape, I'm sure) will fix anything still holds true, even on sophisticated machines like these, haha.

Mine was doing the same thing without letting me turn the key. I took an air canister for cleaning keyboards and spray it inside the keyhole to try and purge any dirt or debris out of the keyhole, then I took WD-40 electrical contact cleaner and spread it inside the keyhole as well. On doing so a oily, black residue came out. Waited for the cleaner to dry, then did it one more time. Knock on wood. It's been working for the last month without any more issues. This is the result of the mechanic at the shop not following the correct procedure before disconnecting the battery. It has triggered part of the anti theft immobilization logic. Damned BMW engineers. You vill do ziss our vay or ve shut you out! Try just disconnecting both battery cables and touching them together for at least ten seconds. This will drain any battery power remaining in the various computer modules, so they will be reset. Reconnect the positive cable and then the negative. The key should now work. The car will relearn the driving, engine and gearbox parameters as you drive it. You should have to reprogram the radio and possibly the CD player settings, the seat and steering wheel positions, etc., etc.
