Welcome aboard the LSO platform on the USS George Washington (CVN-73). Today we are recovering a single COD via the overhead, one day before a CNATRA T-45C Carrier Qualification Detachment. As you can see the flight deck is totally empty. Don't worry, it won't stay like that for long!
Special thanks to Paddles for letting me catch a few rays with them on the platform.

I have two aspiring-to-be Marine Corps fighter pilots here. 7 and 11 years old. They are thoroughly enjoying your videos... even picking up the lingo!
You should do a "Signature move" while driving and see if they notice ;)
@@francofunMB that would be great if they did. 😃
@@francofunMB That's a good one. They will know if I make it obvious enough. Maybe even try a full signature move.
@@francofunMBI do that in my car 😁
Best career choice they could make.... Congrats on great parenting... so rare these days... I bet they love making model airplanes like I did, and still do at 70...
I was fortunate enough to be on board one of those as a civilian aviation photographer landing on the U
SS Forrestal to spend three days roaming around the ship taking about 2000 pictures during those three days. An experience I will never forget... On deck I always had a 'Guardian Angel' with me telling me where to go and stand so I wouldn't get my head chopped off or washed overboard by the blast of an Intruder or Hawkeye. And once inside the ship to guide me through the maze of hallways and pathways... how they can find their way in it is still a miracle to me, everything looks exactly the same. I gained an enormous respect for the people on board doing a fantastic job... around the clock.... 6 months away from home and country....
I had a friend of mine who was in the Navy He was on an aircraft carrier and he said that the most scariest time of his whole life was the first time he was ever on the deck of an aircraft carrier when they were launching and recovering planes.
Believe him....but that's what keeps you alert. The heck is like an ice skating ring, slippery from spilled jet fuel, hydraulics fluids mixed with salty seawater... If you don't pay 100% attention what you are doing you're past tense....@@carlmontney7916
That's it, we need a "Growler Jams/Rob Roy" collaboration.
this American is VERY PROUD of these Navy Men and women. Gods bless you all, and be safe.
Wouldn't mind more of these kind of videos. I like how they're bunched together like they're about to block a free kick in soccer.
Its weird seeing the empty deck looks too much like DCS, but you can actually see how enormous that thing is! Cheers again for a top notch vid buddy!
Super cool ! I never had such a good briefing of the LSO team and how they work ! Thank you , Sir !
An empty flight deck changes the whole feel of the ship. When you can see the huge empty expanse of the flight deck it makes the ship seem larger. Having all the aircraft on deck makes it seem almost cramped and smaller than it really is. Likewise, there is more of a sense of movement when you can see the so much of the deck moving in relation to the horizon. With the planes aboard you aren't seeing much of the horizon unless you are close to the deck edge; then you lose the perspective of the deck moving against the horizon. I never really appreciated how much almost 100,000 tons of ship could move until the Enterprise did a day or two of typhoon avoidance off the Philippines. The airwing stayed ashore at Cubi Point while we went out and steamed in circles. The swells got fairly big and from the flight deck you could really see it moving against the horizon. Normally there is almost no sense of motion when you are aboard a ship that big, though I'm sure the perspective must be completely different when trying to land an aircraft on it.
flight deck looks massive without planes!!
My horse corral here in Wyoming is bigger. Let that sink in.
Nothing but respect for naval aviation!
That was a great landing. Smooth and clean. Experience and excellence leads to smooth safety.
Hey Pail, continue to enjoy all your vids. Just once back in late ‘90s whilst visiting San Diego while still serving 🇨🇦 (Armour) had pleasure of visit onboard USS Constellation. Amazed at size & how USN could pack so many AC into it. Duty PR sailors very polite. Stay safe out there & get back to your family(s).
I always look forward to your videos. Brilliantly narrated and always a joy to watch. Thanks for everything you do man. Much luv from Australia
Hello fellow Aussie 💪🏻🤘👍♥️
Thanks again for putting us in the seat and walking us through one of the many complicated processes of Naval Aviation. It's hard to beat the perspective you offer with your videos. Keep cranking and stay safe Sir.
This was awesome, love the commentary on the recovery from the deck POV.
Glad you enjoyed!
Another jam!! Was up at NASWI all afternoon yesterday watching the Growlers do their thing… couldn’t stop but think about “meatball, line up, angle of attack…” in your voice lmao 😂
And of course picturing the Sig Move 😂🤣♥️
Thank you, Pail, such a beautiful day to be on deck and you're able to film this Greyhound oh I mean Rawhide (love it), these landings go so fast it just amazes me, if there is a foul deck how quickly decisions are made is just wow, no one can do it better than Navy pilots. Pail have an awesome holiday weekend...Polly!
In 1982 or thereabouts, I rode a C-2 from Rota, Spain out to the USS Eisenhower in the Med as part of reporting aboard my next ship (USS Thomas C. Hart FF-1092) who was part of the Ike's task force. As passengers, you're facing to the rear and the arrestor hook landing was... interesting. When it was time for us to disembark via the drop-down ramp, I looked towards the bow to see if I could find where all my guts had traveled to after that stop. I spent three days wandering the Ike while waiting for the Hart's LAMPS Mk II helicopter to fly over and pick up mail (most important), 16mm movies (second-most important) and an STG2 reporting aboard (Ehh, I guess we have to take him over.) Fun times and the only carrier landing I can actually say I've experienced.
Did a lot of work with Hart, sonars 35, 18, same route c-2 , helo ride. MOTU-6.
Thanks PAIL! Always look forward for anything you bring us!
Can’t thank you or our Vets enough for what you do. Having never served I missed out on a lifetime’s experience. Thank you again Sir. Bless our Vets 🇺🇸🇺🇸
These videos are invaluable to be. I'm working on a VR hobby project involving Navy aviation, and having never served, there's so many small, mundane details that I have no way of learning about other than videos like this. I would love to see everyday details about life aboard the boat, including tours showing the progression from sleeping area to ready room, and whatever else you do to prepare for a flight. Heck, even just knowing how you get from the ready room to inside the cockpit would be invaluable reference!
Thank you for the breakdown, I watched the full video of the T45's so I appreciate this ❤
VFMA '70 here. I'm still kicking myself for not going to Annapolis. Gary graduated in '69, and he would have been a big help to a fellow VF cadet and new midshipman. He made us all proud when he became the CNO. Instead, I paid for all of my flight training, and never got to catch a 2 wire. We don't get any re-dos in life.
it's kind of a dance, with the different roles and signals, evolved over many years of doing shipboard recoveries, keeping it safe and, on a day like this, ALMOST easy! Almost. Nice vid, thank you Pail ! and have a great holiday.
Awesome Thanks Pail
Thanks, pail, for the explanation on the LSO function abroad ship. It's definitely wild seeing an empty flight deck. It brings back memories on the days of my youth, walking the deck of the USS Kitty Hawk, CV-63.
Channel keeps getting better and better!
Great video, I always enjoy watching (and learning from) them! And yeah, it feels weird to not see any other aircraft on the flight deck.
That was amazing thanks for sharing. I'm. Really enjoying all these videos please keep them coming.
God bless you stay safe
Nice Job - Love the landing grading breakdown!
Thank You
love the coordination
Your content is really interesting and informative. Thanks. Cheers Stan.
Very cool. Looked like a perfect day to be on the deck.
Hell yeah brother. 🤙 thanks for the jams.
Thanks Growler Jams. Like seeing carrier operations, me. Appreciated!
May God bless all of your evolutions.
Great video. Seen a few photo's of single engine C-2 traps, but never a film, i would love it if one of those shows up one day. We never had C-2's in the Aussie navy, we just bundled the mail into an S-2 or a helo.
Thanks Growler, very informative 👍🏻
Amazing teamwork …… 🇺🇸
Brings back memories.
I've been "a fan" of the channel for a little over a week and now find myself taking notes on your informative incremental breakdown on every inconspicuous (seemingly) detail re the general ops on deck lol. Thanks again!
Welcome aboard!
@@GrowlerJams Yes sir, thank you!
I love this video to show us jow this goes, I have always wondered all that was going on.
Flew in the back of C2A in 1974 to 1978. Stil remember the cat and arrested landings. First cruise I got to go stand on the LSO platform, did fine until I stepped on the deck to film a A7 after it caught the wire. The LSO pulled me back on the platform and chewed my butt off, he let me stay if I was a good boy. thanks for the great video.
Bravo. You guys have the right stuff.
Just discovered your site, real life 'Top Gun', loving the smooth commentary. May you always have clear skies, flat seas, fair winds and an empty six.
Welcome aboard.
Thank you, Sir ! I gained an enormous respect for the people on board doing a fantastic job. Bless our Marine Corps fighter pilots top notch Naval Aviation.
Love it my man! thanks for another look into carrier life 👍
You bet!
Thank you for your videos!
Really enjoyed this video! Another whole side to Naval aviation! That is one empty deck! Must have been the 1st plane recovered. Thank you!
Always incredibly interesting watching this sort of thing happen in person….
Awesome video! Thank you.
Sweet little Vlog Growler ❤🤟🏻🤘
Love the videos Pail. Is it possible to do a Day in Life segment? I bet that would be very enlightening. Thank you and your shipmates for your service.
Perhaps. Let me think on it.
Served inNavy on a ship (Tin can) flew a little for the USAF…love these videos…thank you.
Fly Navy!
Nice! Thanks for sharing.
Amazing job.
I liked it! Never saw one empty except dry dock. Stay safe, Cheers!
Thanks, you too!
Acompanhando aqui do Brazil !! ✈✈🟢🟡🔵🏁
Respect to those pilots landing such a huge aircraft in such little space. And for delivering COD.
Thank you as always for the narrative. Grounder here with thoughts of the air. Product of a squid farm corpsman for WWII.
very good! congratulations!!!
Good day Sir, OUTSTANDING Informative video 👍😉😇Cheers 🍻🍻
Awesome content! 🎉! Keep up the good work 👏
This format was awesome! Perhaps more vids with Paddles and grading, please!
As an Army guy, I had the opportunity to land in a COD twice. Once on the USS Independence for a SOCOM, and once with the Task Force on the USS Kitty Hawk when we launched into AFG in 01. Great times.
Merry Christmas, Pail. God's blessings to you and your family.
Same to you, Mike.
Go Navy!! Thanks
The empty flight deck with the ocean horizon is beautiful.
The empty flight deck reminds me of a beautiful crisp morning when I had the flight deck of HMS Illustrious completely all to myself for all of five minutes. Much smaller but still an amazing experience. Loving these videos. BZ.
Thanks!
Thanks for the LSO explanation for the viewers. Unique to Naval Aviation.
Balls of steel. Love it
Old flight school joke - Any landing you can walk away from is a good one. If the plane can fly tomorrow, it was a great one!
Good stuff. Very cool 🇺🇸
Damn, that naked deck is weird looking. That was a cool video. Thanks for all you do.
Thanks!
Thank you!
Made it look easy
Growler jams! Gosto muito da aviação no porta aviões! Seus vídeos são muito bons! Abraços. Flávio.
Thanks for the video explaining who does what on the LSO platform. Fly Navy!
Very cool nice prospective being on flight deck it’s massive 🫡👍🏼
Man this stuff is so cool!
Multi Sig moves… I think you’ve started a trend here mate, we’ll but sitting in traffic and all pulling the Sig move, loved it 😂❤🤣😂🤘
Cheers!
Hi Pail. Cool. Mail time.😊❤
Outstanding thank you. Fly Navy!
SOP casual as...
The four most professional people on the deck right there.!
I LOVE THE GROWLER JAMS
that's have be impressive to see an landing on a carrier right in front of us! The deck must be shaking isnt no? Thanks for this beautiful videos Sir!
Kool and the Gang! Man this channel is cool
so much to get educated on being a navy unit!
I was under the impression the CODs had been retired - it's good to see the workhorse is still around...Semper Fi.
Nice landing 😮😮
Never stand when you can sit. Never sit when you can rest. Much love.
As usual….well done.
This video makes a lot more sense to this bubblehead with the narration 😊. The F14 RIO that I worked with on CINCUSNAVEUR staff in the early 90s would be tickled that I'm finally learning a bit more about Naval Aviation. That was before the internet, let alone UA-cam, existed😮.
Love It!! Ty Sir 🫡

I was at Ft. Eustis VA for an ALSE course in 1992. On the 4th of July, we went up to Norfolk and were aboard the GW on her commissioning day. All brand spanking new and and empty flight deck. We got lost inside. We kept going up until we found the flight deck. Massive ship. Tiny place to land.
GO NAVY!
Catching a few rays is never a bad thing. Fly Navy
Beautiful recovery.
I feel lonely when deck is empty like this 😅
besides im still watchin
be safe
