Imagine being out on your boat on a bright sunny day like that and then running into a little tub with people singing shanties. That would be one heck of a day out on the water.
It is. We were out fishing on Hood Canal when we ran across a little party barge where a couple people were singing shanties. They were in the middle of Roll The Woodpile Down. I was the only one on our boat who knew and shanties, but that didn't stop me from joining in.
So for those who don't know the song is about the Mexican-American war, Santiana was what the British who deserted to join the Mexican army called General Antonio de Padua María Severino López de Santa Anna y Pérez de Lebrón (usually shortened to Santa Anna or Antonio López de Santa Anna) the song has a number of innaccuracies for one General (later to be 12th U.S. President) Zachary Taylor never killed Santa Anna he was exiled from Mexico for a time and actually outlived Taylor by a quarter of a century.

there are literally so many men these days that want nothing more than to just have good wholesome times with their friends like this. don’t need all the crazy stuff of the modern world, just some friends, music, and and a peaceful environment for a grand old time
So I’ve only just rewatched this after a long time, and I’ve JUST realised who the guy steering the boat is! It looks suspiciously like Jeremy Brown from The Fisherman’s Friends! Now THAT is a colab I really would love to see!!
Yeah, there are actual y’all ships that still sail, I know from experience that at least Lady Washington up in Washington tends to pull out a shanty on her day sails, at least when I sailed her. Perhaps not as tuneful as these folks but that’s part of the authenticity.
Lyrics: Oh, Santiana gain'd the day Away Santiana! Now pull her up and to west they sail All on the plains of Mexico Well heave her up and away we'll go Away Santiana! Heave her up and away we'll go All on the plains of Mexico She's a fast clipper ship and a bully good crew Away, Santiana! And an old salt Yank for her captain, too All on the plains of Mexico Well heave her up and away we'll go Away Santiana! Heave her up and away we'll go All on the plains of Mexico Well Santiana fought for gold Away Santianna! Around Cape Horn to the ice and snow All on the plains of Mexico We'll heave her up and away we'll go Away Santiana! Heave her up and away we'll go All on the plains of Mexico Towards on the field of Molly-Del-Ray Away Santiana! Well both his legs got blown away All on the plains of Mexico Well heave her up and away we'll go Away Santiana! Heave her up and away we'll go All on the plains of Mexico It was a fierce and bitter strife Away Santiana! The General Taylor took his life All on the plains of Mexico. Well heave her up and away we'll go Away Santiana! Heave her up and away we'll go All on the plains of Mexico Santiana now we mourn, Away Santiana! We left him buried off Cape Horn All on the plains of Mexico
For the sake of accuracy, I think the third line doesn't go "Now pull her up and to west they sail", but rather "Napoleon of the west, they say", cause Santi Anna, whom this song is about, was a Mexican General, very significant for their national history.

This. This is something music has been missing. Good music can lift the spirits, but even more so when it's in good company. Sea Shanties, tavern songs, etc. Get more than just one or two people involved. That's why I've loved the idea of Longest Johns' community projects. Just sing, have fun, and enjoy life
I was on a Pirate Ship the other day, and I thought of the bonds of your group and how you all fit so perfectly together. Me and me crewmates decided to sing a few of your songs (albeit we aren't so good at singing) and we had a merry time as we sailed. We started off with Old Maui, and the whole crew joined in for the chorus. 'Fore the song were through, we had drunk a whole keg o' rum and docked at the port o' a small town. Of course, bein' pirates, we pillaged the place 'til the sun came up, and then we left. Then we sang yer version o' Drunken Sailor. I was havin' the time o' me life! 'Owever, the cap'n didn' like the mood, an' he ordered us to stop. Now me an' the lads loved yer songs, so course we continued, but alas the cap'n was fumin'! He said, "now Johnny, one more word out er' you an' i'll maroon yer arse at the next islan' we see!" That didn' keep us from yer beautiful tunes, an' we began to sing Rollin' Go. By then, cap'n McHardy took out his gun an' aimed it right at me left eye! James Chin, me life buddy, took 'im from the rear as the res' o' the crew star'ed a mutiny! "Oh f*** off, the lot of you!" he said as we carried 'em to off the brig, hands an' feet bound. We left 'im on a tiny islet no bigger wide than our ship was deep! Afterwards, me an' the lads set out 'gain while singing yer "Sailor's Prayer" shanty. We'll be addin' this masterpiece to the song list. Th' whole crew rates this song 11/10! Cheers

Sounds awesome! I’d love to hear you guys sing Padstow Farewell, that’s my favorite. I think. I’m not quite sure on the name, but it’s the one that goes “It’s time, to go now/ haul away, your anchor/ haul away! Your anchor/ it’s our sailing time”
Another great video from a great group, are you sure Fisherman's Friends weren't trying to get rid of the competition by taking ya'll out to sea....lol my two favorite shanty groups of all time.
I also really wish I could enjoy such a boat ride, but alas, since the diagnosis of light allergy in 2009, such trips, which would otherwise have been a perfect day for me, are now forever beyond my reach.
Love these. This song especially. I love singing along to the bass line. I hate hearing my speaking voice recorded. I feel like it's lower than what i hear naturally, but when i hear and sing these bass lines i feel alleviated in some way.
