  • For product and industrial designers, time is money so it's important we can develop ideas quickly. Here's one of many tricks for speeding up our design work. See how it's possible to take ideas from early thoughts, to developed concepts in super quick time. This is a great technique for keeping our work fluid and flowing.

    This was so beautiful and calming. I'm just starting out on product design and I was very intimidated. This has inspired me! Thank you ♥

    I just wanted to say how useful & inspiring I've found your videos. I only discovered them a week or so ago but can't seen to stop watching them. I find the approach, the content and the presentation particularly easy to follow and the standard of work is mesmerising. Even my 4 year old has a watch from time to time.
    Having gone back into teaching in September I've been showing a number of these to the classes, in particular whilst teaching from home. They are extremely useful to demonstrate examples and inspire them - it certainly has me. It has pushed me to get my old coloured markers out of the loft that haven't seen the light of day since I did A Level all those years ago. Thank you for your efforts.

      That’s really great to hear, thank you! I’m beginning to realise that it’s really beneficial, in a number of ways, to get the pens out. Thank you for the feedback.... it’s very much appreciated 🙏🙏

      I don't want to take much of your time but should you try to limit the number of colours used when designing or is there another way of choosing colours??

    • @productdesignermaker
      @productdesignermaker  4 роки тому +1

      _Gregory_Schoen_ I’d say that that limiting the options is definitely helpful in the early days. For example, I’d suggest a couple of greys (perhaps cool grey 2 & 4), orange in a couple of tones and blue in a couple of tones. With a bit more practice, I’d widen the palette a bit. Hope this helps. I think there’s a link to some colour options in the text under the video. Let me know if you’d like more info.

    Hi! Nice videos! I love the method and currently trying it out on my college assignments.. Do you have tips on generating ideas for innovating things in product design..which there are things that is perfectly designed, and designing them makes it more complex (which makes the form doesn't follow function) What are your thoughts on this? Thank you!

      Sorry for not seeing your comment sooner. Just take everyday objects and sketch then. Try everything. Try combining two different products and see where you end up!

    Awesome video and tips!
    I just wish there was a way of getting the visuals from the "mind's eye" onto paper or other media as fast and well defined as shown on the video; i know practice has a lot to do with it 😉
    But it is very important to keep these tips in mind. Thank you for your post.

      Thank you, I really appreciate your comment. I'll have a think about the point you make regarding getting the visuals from the mind's eye to paper.... perhaps it can be the subject of a future video!

      @@productdesignermaker ones imagination can flow-form and deform an idea of a product much faster than one can convey those same details in any media. Is there a way to take "snapshots" per se, and be able to recall the details later? That would be a good video 😏
      I'll be on the lookout on your next posts 😊

      Food for thought indeed. I'll keep this in the back of my mind and see what comes of it. I like the idea of a snapshot....

    How much do you think about the usage/practicality of your designs as you work them, or do you just go with the flow and pen stuff that might look cool?

    • @productdesignermaker
      @productdesignermaker  4 роки тому +1

      It really depends upon the project. I made these design pages specifically to demonstrate a process for quickly developing beyond initial ideas. In answer to your question, when I'm working to solve the needs of a client, I'm considering all aspects. I might lean towards either form or function for a few pages, but essentially everything needs to balance. Stuff that looks cool still needs to function. Hope that helps!

    Im a student who is thinking of going into either product design or mechanical engineering and i’m unsure which to pick as i love creating new things with my own designs but i also like the seeing how things work in mechanical engineering and i feel i wont get that in mechanical engineering.
    So my questions for you if you get round to answering,
    Is there good money in product design and would it be an area you could become and entrepreneur in?
    Have you gone to collage for product design?
    Were you always able to draw that good or how did u learn as im terrible at drawing and im better at just making my ideas out of my head abd straight into CAD?

    • @productdesignermaker
      @productdesignermaker  3 роки тому

      Breffni Moore I’d say that good product designers and good mechanical engineers can both earn good money. I’d say that more important than the money is your happiness. If you choose your career because it makes more money than something you enjoy more, you’ll be unhappy going to work every day. That will only get worse the older you are. There are good opportunities for entrepreneurship through either route. The product designer will often be creative and very good at problem solving. The engineer will have a technical mind and be prepared to spend time working through technical issues. Could I draw like this when I was younger? I always enjoyed putting pen to paper, but I’ve been improving always with practice. I’m making videos to help people to improve their drawing more quickly by sharing my thoughts, so I’d encourage people to listen to what I’m saying in the videos, almost more than looking at the video footage. Hope this helps.

    I know some companies don't let their designers to have any contact to the customers, instead, the marketing department totally control the communication with customers and interpret what customers' needs and pass the messages to the designers. Why do some companies do that and is it healthy?

    • @productdesignermaker
      @productdesignermaker  3 роки тому +1

      I guess it’s a case of each to their own. Some of the bigger firms like to ensure the design work they provide, fits their corporate image. It’s very understandable. It’s often the smaller design businesses that trade on their individuality. Definitely pros and cons for each!
