Yvonne Fitts Good for you Yvonne! I'm 53 and I really wish my mom had an interest in crafting. I think it is so healthy to stay creative at any age. Best wishes! X
Good on you honey, I'm 60 and I wish you many more years to get clay making. I was told to give up some things because I have arthritis and my fingers were sore, I gave up for two weeks.....I couldn't move my fingers at all, so I started doing what I always did and got my hands back. I realised later, I had been up in Scotland for a couple of weeks visiting my family, so of course I wasn't using my hands much. So now if I go anywhere I make sire I take a couple of soft balls with me to keep my hands going. All the best with your bead making. Hugs xxxAnnxxx
"Leaving these mistakes in to me, is more valuable than just showing you a straight through video with no mistakes." 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽 that to me is the true spirit of an artist. Fail forward. Great tutorial. One of the realest I've watched. No Hollywood edits and creating with what you have. Classic Material
P.S. Also love that you show your mistakes because sometimes we all get frustrated when things don't turn out as planned. Encouraging to know that, "it's just clay," or that there are fixes or alternatives to our mistakes.
I just bought my very first starter pack like this and found this video.... you probably saved me from getting overwhelmed and giving up too soon!!! Bravo 🙌
I love how you include so many substitutes and options on what we can use If we don’t have access to something Your voice is very calming and your tutorials are very helpful You got your self a new subscriber
I don’t even make beads or anything with clay, but here I am.... 20 mins in and I’m hooked! You are such a great teacher, down to earth, and just so interesting! Great video!
In fact... as I sit here watching this, I spy at least 10 items to use for shaping and fun textures... See, the universe is rewarding me with your beautiful energy!
I’m so impressed with what you were able to get from that one package of clay with no waste. I find that I tend to waste clay and it can be expensive. Thank you so much for the tutorial, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I’ve been working with polymer clay off and on for over 15 years and I tend to get overly ambitious and make things harder then they have to be. Again, I loved your simple and straightforward techniques. Much appreciated. Sherri B.
I was actually shocked by how much I got too ! But dont ever throw clay away it makes great filler and we all somehow make lots of filler ! Lol happy claying
Thank you Susan to all your effort in making this video. It's very helpful for people starting with clay who are little intimidated mixing colors. Also grateful that you are sharing so many ideas and techniques. Thanks so much.
I loved the pinwheels you "weren't feeling". Lol I'm a painter and many of the things I didn't love, people still fawn over and enjoy. You may find new customers making odd stuff you enjoy making even if you aren't in love with the end product. I love this whole video and the whole idea behind the video! You are so helpful to people just starting out, who see all these amazing end products and think "I can't do this". You are awesome!!!
OMG, I am very impressed, and I love the fact you show that you do not need expensive tools to do the job. those were some gorgeous beads you produced.
I love the fact your videos are complete instruction. You see the process, and you give a full explanation for everything. You are right about how tough the clay is. I fooled around about 20 minutes with each piece, but made them more pliable by putting a little cooking oil on my hands. I took your idea for the round shape tool and made a bunch of different tools for soda cans- including cutter/slicers.I made 2 long ones and 2 short one. I put a piece of duck tape across the top sharp edge so It won't cut my hand. The aluminum wipes off easily, and I lightly coated hem with some cooking spray on a paper towel. Thanks for the great idea.
_Dang, Woman!_ Your unique beads just kept coming and coming and coming! You have enormous talent, and are a gifted teacher. Thank you so much for sharing this! (I'm a new subbie) ♥
You are a the real thing, a real treasure! I’m tired of buying beads and stringing them for necklaces, bracelets and earrings, so, I’m excited to start a whole new journey making my own beads. My head is so full of ideas, I can’t wait to get started. But, I’m willing to go through the learning process... it will all be enjoyable! Thank you so much for your thorough and patient tutorial. Your very talented. You made all the clay into beautiful beads I couldn’t even imagine. From a new subscriber in Texas. 💖✨💖
All I can say is you are natural born teacher and artist. I am in awe of what you create. The vibrancy of colors and your mastery of this craft have mesmerized me delighted me inspired me and modeled the healthy attitude of a prolific artist: it’s ok don’t worry about it. Thank you for sharing. It’s such a joy to learn from your videos.
TYFS! So many great ideas! I use popsicle sticks (Dollar Store) stacked up keep thickness of clay consistent. Glue them together is you need so they can't slip. I put my flattened clay between them and roll over the sticks. It makes every piece the same thickness. Cheap n easy.
OMG! Just goes to show that with little $$ and much imagination and effort, one can make beautiful and wonderful creations! So many free scrap items can be useful in clay and thank you for sharing your time and efforts. (It's no surprise that YOU can make such beautiful beads.) Love how you mixed the colors (something I need to learn). Thanks again Susan!
Well, that is just RIDICULOUS in the very best way imaginable! Hard to believe all those beautiful beads from one package of clay! Thank you for showing the possibilities!
Thank you for the old school safety tip! Most people don't give details like that. 😍☺️ oh and a tip from baking is to put thick rubber bands on the ends of the roller. Or you can buy cheap thickness gauges for fondant rollers
You can also tape 2 chopsticks, skewers, etc., parallel to each other on your work station and roll your clay between them to keep your thickness uniform. Thanks so much for the in depth tutorial!! This helped me so much. Fantastic bead ideas!
All I have to say is WOW ...all those beautiful beads you made. I tried it years ago when there was no UA-cam and I must say my enthusiasm fizzled out quite quickly BUT after watching this video you've started a spark, all I have to do is find that darn pasta maker I bought a zillions years ago ....lol
Rita Gonera I know how you feel. I couldn’t find mine and my daughter bought me a new one for Christmas. Of course I found the old one and now I have 2. It comes in handy because now I only use one of them for white clay. It tends to get dirty looking if the pasta machine isn’t perfectly clean so it turned out great.
I have been making jewelry with wire and other stringing materials for years now. I am new to clay and have enjoyed watching your videos of how to and hacks. I love your style! Thanks for sharing your talent!
You could also use a rubber band on each side of your rolling pin. You can pick different thicknesses. Or wrap cardboard around the rolling pin add tape to hold it. I love that you tell people look around the house. Recycle. Everyone is too quick to buy things when you probably have many items sitting in your home. One thing I don't recall you mentioning. Do you let the needs dry before baking it? Also, can't you put some fabric on the tin can so you don't get a shiny back? Totally amazed at the amount of beads you were able to make.
I love the rubber band idea brilliant! The tape would work too but rubber bands would be easier to remove Tfs. Yes baking on fabric keeps the shiny highlights away. No polymer never needs to dry it also never dries out so you can leave it a month and come back and finish what your doing. It only hardens when you bake it . Happy Claying!
I have used popsicle (or craft) sticks to mark different thicknesses of clay. A single stick is thin, glue 2 together for next thickness, then 3 and so forth. I have sets up to 7 sticks high. Or yeah, fogot to mention, have to make 2 for every thickness you create. Then put one on each side of your work and "just keep on rolling". 😀
I picked up a 15X15" plain white ceramic tile at Home depot for under 2 bucks. It works perfectly! The only thing I added to it was felt feet since the underside is very rough. That was just to protect my table. Also, an inexpensive alternative to buying the ball tools is make up brushes. I bought a set of small and large ones at my local dollar store for a buck a set. Now I have 14 different ball tools! Just use the bottom end. I painted mine with clear nail polish just as an added measure of security.
I am a beginner and I wish I had for this video in the very beginning before I wanted so much material and time. This is the best beginner video on UA-cam. If the person who made this video is reading these comments THANK YOU!
I was actually looking at that set to see what i could do with it and thought that’s not enough! But after seeing the amount of product you got out of that i’m totally rethinking my standpoint! Lovely creations!
I just found your channel recently and I have to say it is one of the best channels on UA-cam, and I have watched thousands of videos on different topics and its rare that I find a channel that is so informational and interesting and entertaining. Thank you for all that you share with us!
I am so thrilled to have found this video and you the artist. You took $20 and made hundreds of dollars worth of GORGEOUS beads. I am beyond my verbal ability to express how creative and innovative this video is. More than a tutorial. Full of tips, tool dupes, color theory, techniques, etc. and a master class on bead making. I cannot stop gushing. Thank you for sharing your talent and knowledge. Awesome. So awesome.
Thank you!! I just bought my first big variety pack. The few packs I got I realised I needed more for canes. This video means so much. Things weren't going so well lol. U saved me some $$ by using so little. My hubby is happy he didn't have to go get more. 💜
I never thought about playing with clay to help my arthritis. Thanks for that idea. I may have to try this after all. I recently discovered how severe my arthritis is when I started wire wrapping jewelry and found it almost impossible to hold tiny beads to thread onto the wire.
As far as wire wrapping and jewelry making... a good stickem tool (with a gummy tip to hold the beads until you put on the stringing material) may help. Or you can use tweezers. When I was 1st diagnosed with arthritis I was devastated because of what I thought I would no longer be able to do. But I fiund ways to do just about what ever I wanted. You can find exercises to help with any arthritic issues. Sirry so long and not really about this woderful video.
Yayee, Susan, been watching your videos... and "today" I bought my very first clay... you make so many beautiful things... I'm hoping I can do the same... Thanks Susan... lady before me states she's 81, well, I'm 71 and look forward to making something... all thanks to you..
Thank you so very much for taking the extensive time it took to teach us so much. I am impressed and inspired with how much can be done with things around the house. As usual, your talent and work are awesome and I appreciate that you are willing to impart that wisdom to the rest of us beginners. :)
I’ve been working with polymer clay for 22 years, so I’m old-school like you 😊....and still love watching videos of people working with the stuff! Your videos are great and you have such good advice! Keep it up!
I bought 2 pasta machines at savers/value Village for about $4 each, one didn't have a handle but we had an old bent screwdriver laying around that made a perfect handle for it. So keep an eye out at thrift stores, the pasta machine makes a huge difference!
Wow, is it ever nice to watch someone who's practical, knowledgeable, and sensible. I have all the toys, including some ancient clay, and I'm thinking about getting back into the craft. If you don't inspire me, someone's going to inherit a fabulous hoard. Thanks, Susan.
I teach art to kids and this is so helpful, it really get the idea across that you don't have to have the (right tool) to have fun and make beautiful things. I love clay too.
This is one AWESOME tutorial! I am bookmarking this specifically for anyone who asks me how to get started. I've been claying for 20+ years, but showing that impressive amount of beads created by just the starter pack is just amazing. And using around-the-house tools for those who are beginning! This was just wonderful. Thank you so much for sharing. I'm going to suggest to my guild that we put a link for this on our guild page for our newbies!
Susan, thanks so much for your time and effort that went into making this video. It has so many tips and advice for the beginner and actually answered quite a few questions I had that I couldn't find online! Helps for me: no dedicated oven (I'm paranoid about that too). And I need to switch from sculpey iii to premo. I've made some lovely canes from your other tutorials, but mostly from sculpey iii or a mix of that and premo. I'm not going to toss them, but as with everything, it's a learning process. Thanks again for an awesome tutorial and making it fun, not frustrating, for the newbie.
Can aaalways use the sculpey 3 for pracice pieces too. No, they will not be as strong, but if are having difficulty in executing your ideas, it may help to use the "weak" clay just find a way to put it togther. No need to fear mixing of clays, or wasting the"good" stuff. I try to akways keep 2-3 blocks of sculpey 3 just for these types of ideas.
I am one of those that doesn't really want to make clay beads but LOVE watching someone else do it!!! I have so many crafts that I do, mostly for charity such as crocheted and beaded macrame bracelets and a bit of jewelry... my brain can't handle any more!! Thank you for sharing your wealth of knowledge. If I come across any clay at a yard sale I just might have to try it out!
I’ve always wanted to make my own beads but I’ve had a hard time finding simple but very effective methods. You’re an awesome teacher and I look for to more of your videos!
I just want to thank you, for showing me and all others, your technique, creativity and all the time you put into this. I like many are new to this. I have to keep busy and this has so many variety and options to work with, with out hauling out the paints, canvases, water etc.. I saw your video on being at least acknowledge for showing you how to do these techniques, I agree and can understand the frustrations and disappointment you must have from this. I promise if I ever get to the point where I can actually sell something I made ( shock if I do). I will give a lengthy praise and bow down to the person who has showed me all that I have accomplished. I just started this a month ago, had bough the product 2 years ago, didn’t know what to do or how. I am 60 and like many need to keep busy. You are an inspiration, love your attitude and am very grateful for what you are doing. Thank you again. I am in awe of your artistic and creative mind. You should be proud of all you are doing. Please don’t stop. We need people like you in our lives, even though it is on UA-cam. Living in rural small town, we don’t have many opportunities to go to classes and have on hands instructors .
This is where my addiction to polymer clay all began. With this very video. Since then my addiction has grown and grown. I've shared my addiction with friends who are now also addicted. Haunting UA-cam for your newest video became part of my obsession. I started with this box of polymer clay. From this video I went on to make the tools which was great fun. I learned from you a fantastic way to store my ever growing clay collection, how to make different colors of clay. How to display my finished products, and so on and so on. You've provided a start to end education in all things polymer clay. Susan, thank you so very much. You gave me a joyful hobby I've been able to share with others & all the knowledge I needed to keep moving forward and honing my skills.
I have just bought some clay and haven't got a pasta machine or many tools but until i get more advanced ill use stuff around the house , brilliant tutorial thankyou
The pasta machine is the biggest game changer but you can get them reasonable from wish, ali Express and some people get really lucky at thrift stores . I did clay for many years without one
I used to have a pasta machine but it broke. So, like you, I did it the hard way. The solution I found for having and even thickness of sheet was popsicle sticks. For a thin layer I'd use one popsicle stick on each side of the sheet of clay and roll it down to that thickness. For a thicker layer I'd use two popsicle sticks glued one on top of the other. Worked like a charm for me. I've made myselt a beautiful beaded curtain with my clay. Love your videos, I always learn something new or am inspired for try something new, thank you again.
Amazing video!!! I cannot believe what you can do with that one pack of clay! I love all your tips and tricks and am going to start using those photo covers to store my blends! Thank you so much- you’re the best!
Now I know... It's going to take longer than I thought, be about as much work as I imagined, and give me more beads than I ever dreamed! Thank you for helping me!!
Thank you so much for doing this video! I have wanted to try it but thought the initial investment would be prohibiitive. You certainly shattered that myth! I have ordered some clay and now I will watch some more of your tutorials.
Thank you for leading me in the right direction! I had tried making things with polymer clay but knew nothing about conditioning the clay or anything else! Many epic fails! So i gave up until i found your channel. I got a gift card to Amazon and blew the lot on polymer clay supplies. I have an autoimmune wasting muscle disease (necrotizing myocitis, one of 300 cases worldwide)Im homebound in a wheelchair, crafts keep my sanity and this will help me keep the dexterity in my hands i need so much to do my beloved beading. And Im ALL about building the bead stash! I love your channel, your attitude and your work. Thank you!
Susan thank you for this tutorial for beginners. OMG what a wonderful video and a great refresher for those who have been using clay on and off. I even learned some new techniques. Thank you. I like the list if your tutorials and have finally purchased the gold leaf sheats.
I do wire wrapping, and had no desire to work with clay. You almost have me hooked with your GREAT tutorial. Your beads are SPECTACULAR!!! Thank you for sharing! Jean
This was a very helpful video. I had a bunch of clay from 10 years ago and didn’t know if I could still use it. Now I know that I can! Your work is beautiful, but very labor intensive. It is totally worth it. Great job!
Hi just found your channel WOW looove it, you have inspired me to learn a new hobby, your work is amazing and beautiful, you explain and share brilliantly. Thank you so much Lynne
I used to live in michigan so thats why i understand how the warm weather REALLY effects the clay . I used to pack the clay in my pockets because theres no extra room in my bra ! Lol
@@TurtleSoupBeads I was "accidentally" born in Michigan and came home to Georgia. I visited Detroit in late Nov when I was 19. I had never been so cold nor had I ever seen so much snow in my entire life! LOL! I'm quite happy being a southern belle. 😊
I know this video is 2 years old. I have watched it many times and still keep coming back to it. I wanted to comment as I am amazed at the difference between Australia and USA. You buy that package of clay for $15. The same package of clay in Australia is everyday priced at Spotlight for $84 which is equivalent to about $65 USD at today’s exchange rate. Never do they discount 50% and even when they do discount 30 or 40% it rarely applies to craft supplies. I find this incredible and it certainly makes it difficult for a lot of people to craft. Also a lot items available at your dollar tree cost me close to $4, $5 or even up to $10 at our cheap stores. Suffice to say I envy USA crafters. On a more upbeat note however. I love what you do and watch your videos over and over. Thank you for your time and talent. You’re amazing!
You are so good at this! I got that same pack of clay and now feel like making beads with it which I've never tried before. I used to take these clays down to our sailboat on weekends while staying on board to clean up and work on it. At night this was the perfect hobby to sit up at the captains table with, making sea creatures, nautical emblems, then baking in the little propane oven to keep myself occupied. I've salvaged a bunch of old dried out clay with clay conditioner and a pasta roller to use in this next project with sparkles, mica, & foils from card crafting to jazz it all up. Thanks for the inspiration and help in figuring out what to do with the sampler pack. 🌹
I've never got around to "playing" with clay, but I've always found the colours enticing. But here you've so generously dedicated time, expertise and love to helping people to give this a go - and that's what I'll do. And I'm pretty sure my autistic son is going to love joining in too.
Oh thank you for the simple instructions.....I am 81 and looking for a new project.......I will get started soon....
Yvonne Fitts Good for you Yvonne! I'm 53 and I really wish my mom had an interest in crafting. I think it is so healthy to stay creative at any age. Best wishes! X

I am 76 and want to learn more and more!! You are like me, eternally wanted to make things!!
Daniella Uribe Well you know how the saying goes.. another year older.....another year wiser! If we don't learn we get no wiser, just older!!
I'm 79 and looking for a new project too~! I guess you're never too old to pick up a new project.

I wish I could "like" this more then once! amazed every time I see this.

I was actually looking at that set to see what i could do with it and thought that’s not enough! But after seeing the amount of product you got out of that i’m totally rethinking my standpoint! Lovely creations!
A real bead haven. Everything is so beautiful!
TY
Awesome. So awesome.
thank you !
I got that same Premo set and now I'm excited to play with it. I can't believe how much you made, and it's all beautiful!
Thank you!! I just bought my first big variety pack. The few packs I got I realised I needed more for canes. This video means so much. Things weren't going so well lol. U saved me some $$ by using so little. My hubby is happy he didn't have to go get more. 💜
So glad it helped !
@@turtlesoupbeads751 couldn't be happier!! 💜✌
I never thought about playing with clay to help my arthritis. Thanks for that idea. I may have to try this after all. I recently discovered how severe my arthritis is when I started wire wrapping jewelry and found it almost impossible to hold tiny beads to thread onto the wire.
Just conditioning it by hand really helps me a lot
@@TurtleSoupBeads Thanks! 😊
That's awesome ! Happy claying
Keep it up!
The idea of using the stacked cereal boxes is genius! As usual, you are awesome!
This is a great "warts and all" tutorial. Great way to show people new to polymer clay the challenges that can occur. Thank you.
I bought 2 pasta machines at savers/value Village for about $4 each, one didn't have a handle but we had an old bent screwdriver laying around that made a perfect handle for it. So keep an eye out at thrift stores, the pasta machine makes a huge difference!
Oh yes ! They are a a amazing time saver but you were really lucky to find 2
Wow, is it ever nice to watch someone who's practical, knowledgeable, and sensible. I have all the toys, including some ancient clay, and I'm thinking about getting back into the craft. If you don't inspire me, someone's going to inherit a fabulous hoard. Thanks, Susan.
Susan!!!! Yet again another wonderfully informative and fun tutorial. Please keep them coming.
I teach art to kids and this is so helpful, it really get the idea across that you don't have to have the (right tool) to have fun and make beautiful things. I love clay too.
Love the video. An amazing amount of beads you got from that package. Beautiful.
You can mix the sculpy3 and premo it will make it stronger , but its really silly they dont explain the differences on the packages
Welcome ! And TY 😊
Thank you!! Your real life suggestions really make me feel like I could do this!! I appreciate the time and effort you put into your videos!!
How wonderful! Thank you for sharing your unique talent.
Susan :) Thank you so much for taking the time to create this tutorial. I'm just getting started with polymer clay and this was incredibly helpful.
I loved so much your simplicity & creation
I'm just staring into polymer clay. I make jewelry and would love to make "marble & stone" for beads. Thanks tonzz for being an excellent teacher!!
Amazing video!!! I cannot believe what you can do with that one pack of clay! I love all your tips and tricks and am going to start using those photo covers to store my blends! Thank you so much- you’re the best!
The big purple one are beautiful.
You have a new sub... I'm in Calgary Canada... we already have snow so i might have to get really up and personal with my clay
Welcome! Sorry about the snow so pretty but lasts too long lol
Now I know... It's going to take longer than I thought, be about as much work as I imagined, and give me more beads than I ever dreamed! Thank you for helping me!!
ive been watching your vids all weekend and am heading into my craft room to play. ty for the inspiration!!!
Their are all beautiful beads.
I love the illustrations.of working w/the clay....
I love that you make such beautiful beads and don't use an extruder
Great video! Fyi, the peach, gold, yellows look great against darker skin tones.
This is a brilliant tutorial. I'm stunned with how many beads you got and how gorgeous they all are. Thank you.
Thank you!
Susan thank you! I've made sure to post this in my beginners groups on Facebook cause honestly I wish I had known this when I started out!
Thanks so much !
Susan thank you for this tutorial for beginners. OMG what a wonderful video and a great refresher for those who have been using clay on and off. I even learned some new techniques. Thank you. I like the list if your tutorials and have finally purchased the gold leaf sheats.
You'll love the gold leaf , it changes everything !
Those beads are awesome! Great job!! Beautiful!!
I do wire wrapping, and had no desire to work with clay. You almost have me hooked with your GREAT tutorial. Your beads are SPECTACULAR!!! Thank you for sharing! Jean
Your so sweet ! Thanks
what an absolute legend
This was a very helpful video. I had a bunch of clay from 10 years ago and didn’t know if I could still use it. Now I know that I can! Your work is beautiful, but very labor intensive. It is totally worth it. Great job!
the only issue with older clay is waking it up maybe a bit of a workout but its still useable
Hi just found your channel WOW looove it, you have inspired me to learn a new hobby, your work is amazing and beautiful, you explain and share brilliantly. Thank you so much Lynne
Welcome!
Lynne Davis aa
I want to thank you for all your time you give us. I love how you use things around the house
Love your down to earth approach! I’m in ND (cold) and when I’m claying I almost always have a block or two in my bra waiting to be used. 😆
I used to live in michigan so thats why i understand how the warm weather REALLY effects the clay . I used to pack the clay in my pockets because theres no extra room in my bra ! Lol
Lololol!!!
Lol
Well... I'll go ahead and hit that subscribe button... Carry on.
@@TurtleSoupBeads I was "accidentally" born in Michigan and came home to Georgia. I visited Detroit in late Nov when I was 19. I had never been so cold nor had I ever seen so much snow in my entire life! LOL! I'm quite happy being a southern belle. 😊
I even use purses that have pretty designs, belts, there are just so many things I use to make my molds for textures.
Great idea tfs
Somebody said it, ....you are a genius and a treasure, I'm so happy I found you. Thanks for sharing.
I am a beginer. I am so happy that I found you because you explain everything clearly. Thanks for sharing.
Such an inspiring video! I really appreciate all the work and thought you put into it.Thank you, thank you.
Awesome and informative video, especially for those on a budget 😋 Thank you ❤
I've never got around to "playing" with clay, but I've always found the colours enticing.
But here you've so generously dedicated time, expertise and love to helping people to give this a go - and that's what I'll do. And I'm pretty sure my autistic son is going to love joining in too.
