  • Today is a special treat- a budget V12 monster.
    This S600 was actually owned by a famous billionaire before it was passed on to its current owner.
    Enjoy!

    the beauty of that car is the refinement and handling, and comfort of the interior. not necessarily the power. 390HP and 420 ft. lbs. torque in a 5000 lb. car is really no big deal. now if it had 500HP and 550 ft. lbs. torque, then we'd be talking musclecar territory. 10hp per cubic inch is where really fun things start happening. the W140 is just a bit shy of that.

    11:30 to drive it the normal way you have to put the selector to the left. Otherwise it will only shift to the 4th gear.

    You're wrong about the 0-60 it actually does 5.6's not "6.6 considering this particular year came out with the 5-speed has the sport option, the 1992-95 4-speed does anywhere between 5.9 and 6.3's. When i was in HS back in the late 90's i timed my old mans 1994 S600 to 60 and got 6's flat with 4 passengers.

      @@Adam_G No prob. It can actually do 5.4's on its best day especially when the service is up to date like new wiring harness/spark plug wires spark plugs and ignition coils with good octane fuel of at least 92. I personally owned a mint 1998 S500 and hit 60 in exactly 6.5's. The S600 is quicker by a good full second considering the 80HP ratio and a heftier amout of torque. I personally would rather be driving a W140 than a Rolls Royce

      @Lino Andrade usually for olders cars like ur s class there shouldve been extra care put into it, for my ML I kinda neglected it and its fine it has more than 200k miles, well I guess its a tank since mercedes cars handle 100k miles like a champ

    How's maintenance cost on the W140 S600? Thinking of getting one...

    • @remuaja84
      @remuaja84 5 років тому +1

      I see the question a lot and hardly proper answers. My guess is that basic maintenance is more expensive but not astronomical compared to an average car. However, the car has plenty of gadgets and electrics (simply more things to fail). And in the case of the 600, the engine bay is very cramped. I requested a change of the upper oil pan gasket - the work alone was over 2000 eur, because they remove the engine for this procedure. So, the lack of space in the engine bay is the factor that can multiply costs for some procedures. Another factor to mention is the heavy weight, 2200 kg. This surely puts strain on suspension and brake components, decreasing lifetime -> increased costs over the long run. Finally, some mistakes in the car design, such as the biodegreadable wiring harnesses. The pre-facelift engine wiring harnesses tend to have their insulation cracked, resulting in short circuits. New harnesses can be estimated to be low four figures, but a DIY guy can also craft their own. Oh, and the fuel consumption! I would guesstimate, compared to a Corolla, double fuel costs with nice, highway-based driving, triple with a heavy foot and more city-oriented stop 'n go.

      @@remuaja84 Why on Earth would they tell you to take the engine out to remove the oil pan gasket , STAY away from MB Dealerships with any W140 specially the 600's .
      Anyone considering purchasing an M120 V12 powered W140 better have a little (not much) of a mechanically minded .
      I do everything on my 600SEL my self & i mean everything ,cost is just parts .
      I also have my own C3 & C5 Scanner to see any error code that might pop up .
      Also need to know where to buy the parts from .
      Never ever buy parts from MB ,shop around & you get the same genuine part elsewhere for a fraction of what MB charges . One example : MB price for Lower engine Harness ,$1675 plus gst , elsewhere ,Genuine Updated DELPHI harness $ 299 .
      Everyone wants one ,then when it comes to maintenance & see the Prices let it go & replace them with cheap JUNK china Parts ,only to find out 2 month later if the part in question lasts that long ,Ooh the part broke again ,then the car gets a bad reputation for the cheap owners that think they can maintain a super luxury car with cheap parts ,lol .
      Take for example the Blower Regulator ,Original is BEHR at around $ 400 , it lasts & lasts , now look at the China Junk regulator ,it lasts maybe a week or a month ,maybe 3 then you need to buy another one .
      Maintenance is Key to own a W140 V12,anyone that relays on MB Service depots or Indy Mechanics should just leave the W140 alone & just admire it . Good Luck with yours remuaja84

      @@MercS600W140-600SEL-LORINSER But indeed, a good indie mechanic is a much better choice if available. Better service at a lower cost. And good quality parts, 100% agree. People buying the cheapest and complaining is so pointless!

    • @tunnelportterror
      @tunnelportterror 4 роки тому +3

      the cars are 20+ years old now, so you won't be considering "maintenance" costs, it will be RESTORATION AND REPAIR costs. the only way you can own one is, if you wealthy, OR you are a mechanic. I own one with 107,000 miles and I've been a mechanic for 40 years. these cars develop problems that can be very hard to diagnose, even for a seasoned mechanic. you need a dedicated hand held scan tool, just to get live data from the onboard computers, and pull codes, to diagnose problems. otherwise just scanning it at the dealership will be $850, just to tell you what it might be, not actually repair it. if you do get one, buy a 1996-up model W140, they had an improved ignition with coil-on-plug. the early models had dual distributors and wires, and a tune up for 2 caps, 2 rotors is $300, with spark plugs $350, and that's doing it yourself. there's a LOT of hydraulic lines under the car, and if it sat in a rust belt area, you'll be changing a lot of brake and suspension hydraulic lines. if you had to pay someone for all this it would be $10 grand just to get one in shape.
