The "a song makes you feel a thought" quote is perfect here, I'm glad you got the message even if you didn't enjoyed as much as their other songs.
This solo provokes in me the most intense reaction I have to any piece of music. There's no real build-up to it, it's just a sudden explosion of the feelings that had been bottled up until that point, where wistfulness becomes anguish, regret turns to desperation, an uncontrollable sobbing with so much passion behind it that it makes me cry every time I hear it.

It took me a while to really get this song, and if i'm alone, just with my headphones, just listening to music and nothing else. The same here. When I listen to this song alone and without distraction, it quite often ends up with moist eyes. The whole package of melody, vocals and Kanami's emotional outburst in the form of her solo always get me again.

Team Crybaby checking in! All joking aside, that solo is out of this world. I never really knew how to express the way it hits me so hard. The emotions just jump right out of it and smacks me right in the face. The first guitar solo that has ever done that to me. The song itself is great but, that solo is the best. I love it and I don't care if it makes me cry.

You make a good point that, as musicians, there's a danger we "listen with our heads" too much. Ever since I decided to first listen with my heart, music's been having a greater impact on me. This song is a great example of one that hits different when I don't try to pick it apart.

Daydreaming, About Us, Anemone, Endless Story, PAGE, Wonderland, Awkward, Start Over, Mirage, At the Drop of a Hat and Smile -- an unbelievable range of mid-tempo songs from the greatest hard rock band on the planet - Band-Maid. "Daydreaming," "YOLO," "Puzzle,” and a host of others are world-class masterpieces. Although I love Daydreaming just the way it is and believe it may be Band-Maid's best composed and overall accessible song, I've always wonder if it was sung in English, how deep in the international market Daydreaming would have traveled...? Oh well, I'll stop daydreaming now. Thx Jack, for another great Band-Maid reaction!

I really like Band-Maid and I consider myself a fan of them, I bought enough of their stuff to do so, but I am personally not a huge fan of most of these songs and almost all of them are bottom 25 to 30% for me. The only exceptions are about Us and Wonderland, which I both really like and are close to the top of favourite Band-Maid songs, I still don't know what makes them different for me. I can enjoy Start over every once in a while if I'm in the mood even though it is not really my thing. Some of them are really low on that list though, PAGE and At the drop of a hat especially followed closely by Smile and Daydreaming.
I also don't consider these mid-tempo, but more on the slow side, but that might just be my perspective since I have listened to a lot of fast music the last 20 years (with the exception of doom metal and funeral doom, compared to that this is fast tempo).
The main problem for me personally with those songs is just them being ballads (that's a me thing for sure). I am usually not a fan of "sweet" melodies as they make me feel uncomfortable (for the lack of a better word) and I usually have the urge to stop listening to the song when I do. Listening to Japanese music since last year made me more comfortable with more poppy choruses (still not my favourite), but the "sweet" ballady songs are still extremely boring to me for some reason (I would certainly describe Daydreaming as boring myself). I also don't find half of the solo in Daydreaming all that special, it might be my brain being screwy or something but I don't feel a lot of emotion in this one like most people do (but I have noticed over my years on this earth that my brain sometimes works differently compared to a lot of people).
That being said, I know this is a fan favourite and I can completely understand why if you enjoy or appreciate the style they are going for, they absolutely nail what they are trying to do. It's by no means a badly made song, it just not for me. I will keep trying though by listening to reactions to this song and I usually don't skip it, but it is for sure one of the toughest for me to get through from all the ones you have mentioned.
Also, the Acoustic versions of the ballady songs (the ones they did in December) worked way better for me for some reason. The exception is probably Smile since that one was basically the same and I prefer the original of Manners but that's probably my number 1 Band-Maid song so that is probably why. I actually liked most of the acoustic versions of the others. I am still not really sure why my brain perceives them differently in that form.
As far as them signing in English goes. I might be completely wrong in this as I am by no means an average listener, I haven't listened to the radio since I started listening to metal over 20 years ago, but I honestly think the main thing that turns a lot of western audiences off is their outfits and name. Probably more than the language barrier, although I personally usually don't care too much about lyrics in music, so that might be bias on my part. I know a lot of people almost exclusively listen to lyrics/vocals and I listen more to vocal melodies (or textures/rhythm for music with harsh vocals) than anything else. But Western people tend to have weird misconceptions about specific things and maid outfits are certainly one of them.

@@MaartenT Being into Metal, I'm surprised you don't care for Band-Maid's heavier songs, you know, No God, Black Hole, Rinne, Moratorium, Puzzle, etc. Besides B-M, two of my favorite groups are Jinjer and The Warning (mostly for their incredible writing at such young ages.) I looked over some of your selections you follow on your YT channel and discovered you like people like Jarzombek and others. But it still surprises me you like a couple of B-M's slower pieces and not their harder more progressive bangers. Anyway, thanks Maarten, for your insightful comment!
PS - If people realized the reason why they wear their Maid outfits and their belief in sexual equality, etc., I think they'd put their erroneous just-trying-to-be-sexy-French-maids-to-draw-attention ideas aside.

      @@TomClark-Futoura
I have listened and still listen to a lot of different genres, but Metal and it's subgenres has been my main thing the last 20 or so years. I didn't listen to a lot of rock during that time, I did discover Ozric Tentacles and some similar bands during that time, but that's about it. I am actually happy that giving Band-Maid a chance put me onto some other type of music and I threw myself off the deep end when I started to enjoy Band-Maid (like I tend to do when I discover new genres). I absolutely love getting into new styles of music.
I might have miscommunicated what I like from Band-Maid (wouldn't surprise me not being an English native speaker) as I am certainly into their heavier songs. All the ones you mentioned are high up on my favourites list although my favourite by them isn't super heavy (Manners). My favourite album of them is Unseen World followed by World Domination. Saiki's vocals and their skillful playing is what won me over almost instantly after checking them out. I am still not huge on some of the poppy choruses, but it is what it is.
The more poppy side of a lot of the female Japanese bands (usually the choruses) is still what I like the least about most of the bands I have listened to. But I have gotten better with that and I do enjoy Gacharic Spin quite a bit nowadays and they are basically power-pop, especially in their early career and they have processed vocals sometimes which I absolutely tend to hate.
I am also not a huge fan of the more power metal vocals some bands tend to have even though I am getting more used to those as well by literally buying CD's and DVD's/Bu-rays to try and get used to them. Power Metal is one of the Metal genres I tend to not like too much because of the "epic" melodies and the vocal style. Vocal timbre does a lot for me and I absolutely love Saiki's vocals, they are not as super high as some vocalists vocals are and I prefer it that way for this style of music.
And yes, the maid outfit thing is a silly thing to care about but it was probably one of the reasons why I didn't give them a chance at first. I had listened to some Babymetal before which I don't like as much (nothing against them though, I recently bought a couple of blu-ray's to see if I can remedy that) and assumed that Band-Maid would be similarly poppy/J-pop choruses mixed with guitar music, so I never wanted to give them a shot.
The outfits is something I thought was stupid (even though it didn't stop me from listening to them) until I realized that most of the black metal musicians I listen to have ridiculous outfits as well and I couldn't care less about that. I still think a lot of people in the West look at those outfits and see a band that playback their stuff on stage and can't play their instruments. They compare them to pop musicians they know from the West or to pure Japanese Idols (at least from what they know about them). I also think some Japanese female bands tend to focus a bit too much on the fact they are female instead of focusing on their excellent musicianship. But some of it is probably also a cultural gap, which will be difficult to overcome. That being said, K-pop certainly seem to have conquered the West somewhat, so who knows.
Edit: Also sorry for you having to go through my idiotic long list of subscriptions. The youtube app on consoles apparently isn't even made for +999 subs and the numbers go out of the circle. I should really clean that out.

@@MaartenT Thx, Maarten. BTW - Your English is great so, don't worry about that. Here's a thing I've written before about the Maid outfits (I think you know all this): I wish new, worldwide fans knew this early on with their investigation about B-M. But as Fans and Maidiacs know, Miku -- the 2nd guitarist, lyricist, founder and who worked at a maid cafe -- wanted to show that everyday working "Kawaii" girls dressed as maids in high heels while having fun and smiling could rock as hard as any guy band sweating it up in their hip, poor tortured artists "outfits"... and by showing that contrast (the Gap), it would generate interest, which it so successfully has done! It also represents Woman Power (Equality), which is an important theme with the Maids.
Now they show up as Maids for all band business and interviews, etc. and have created a long-lasting, unmistakable, visual band brand. Very cleaver, Miku. Your diabolical plan for world domination is working. Of course, none of this would work if their music and stage performance wasn't at such a remarkably high level. Band-Maid is considered by many of their fans and Maidiacs to be the best hard rock band in the world - maid outfits and all!

Thanks Jack for reacting to an actual ballad. I loved your anti ballad warning. This song is very popular among BM fans. Your job as a reactor is to analyze but this song is more about conveying an emotion of longing than technical wizardry. Kanami's first few seconds of the solo (along with the intro slide) convey this emotional release that had been building before transitioning back into longing. Honestly the best way to listen to this song is in a dark room with eyes closed and allow oneself to be immersed in the emotion of it with analytical brain turned off.

Excellent!. The best anti-ballad analysis of a ballad. I liked the reference about Mike Eizinger. It is not the first time that I hear some cross reference between Incubus and Band Maid by a musician. What I like most about Daydreaming is that ability to use music to convey emotions and tell us this story of longing (in four minutes, no need to put on a musical about it!). Five Japanese girls perfectly explaining themselves to the rest of the world without the need for words. And that solo... has always reminded me of that great song title "While HER guitar gently weeps". Thanks Jack! I've had a good time.

hey man, I know you can look them up yourself, but thought I would drop the lyrics here for ease of read. The instrumentationa nd lyrics meld together so well with this song:
    Daydreaming, don’t wake me up
There's nothing I can do with a hoarse voice
    Stay next to me tonight
    Hold on, feel my soul

As we swayed under the moonlight
    Our shadows blended together
    Clumsiness intertwined
I hope tonight does not end

    This may be wrong
Though I thought it was over
    I still want to believe
I feel more alive in this moment

    Daydreaming, dreaming of you

So, I'm daydreaming, don’t wake me up
There's nothing I can do with a hoarse voice
    Stay next to me tonight
    Don’t go

I want to daydream, don’t let it disappear
We cannot go back, so don’t go
    Stay next to me tonight
    Hold on, feel my soul

Feeling the distance of this breath
Somehow I love you so much
    Our shadows start to move
And dissolves in the early hours

    This may be wrong
Though I thought it was over
    I still want to believe
I feel more alive in this moment

    Daydreaming, dreaming of you

So, I'm daydreaming, do not wake up

One of my favourite Band-Maid songs and one I've never called a ballad, perhaps because the term has connotations of something slow, genteel, old, to me at least - even though it does do what the dictionary definition of a ballad does and "narrate a story in a few stanzas"! The story is basically saying "I love you, I miss you, I'm daydreaming of you and would rather stay asleep and dream of being with you than wake up to reality without you". Although you mentioned the word 'ballad' a few times before the song started, you didn't use it much during the song so I'm wondering if you'd still class this as a ballad. I (from my non-muso viewpoint) have always thought of it as simply a soft Rock song in the late 80's style of a band like U2 - especially that lead guitar sound throughout the song (but not Obi-Wan Kanami's small solo which would probably stretch The Edge's skills). Nice to hear you're a Stewart 'Radovan' Lee fan - the only comedian I've gone to see three times. I see he's sporting a beard now, possibly in an attempt to fool the Hague War Crimes Tribunal. 🤣😂 PS Have you ever heard his 'Pea Green Boat' narrative. In Daydreaming I'm drawn to Saiki's lower regirser in verses. She's like talking to me as a person. The band comes along but not as a driving force. At 0:55 you said you are a sucker for 1980's ballads, so I knew we had a chance you'd enjoy this one, because, at least to me, there is so much in that song reminiscent of the first three tracks of U2's "The Joshua Tree" album from the 1980's, and even from U2's 1984 "In The Name Of Love". I bet you'll notice it after you listen to "Daydreaming" again.

That is really interesting since I don't really like what I have heard of U2 either, I have the same "boring" and "uncomfortable" feeling while listening to those songs than I have listening to Daydreaming. So it might be the guitar sound/melodies that don't do it for me personally. I am in the same boat as Jack with the exception that I haven't heard a lot of ballads from any era that I really like :).

Apparently Saiki asked Kanami to compose a ballad for her. The result is Daydreaming. Considering the supposed feelings Kanami has for Saiki there has to be a strong emotional element here. Whatever it is unmistakable Kanami and Band Maid and Kanami's solo is superb. Typical wonderful Band maid performance.

This solo to me is why I think Kanami is a genius, it's not complicated, it's not long, it's just perfect for the song, it's memorable and it gets me emotionally every time for some undefinable reason. This song really needs subtitles. I encourage you to listen to it a few more times. It's subtle.
I think there's two aspects to making music. One is the craft of it: Being able to play notes quickly, cleanly, and precisely - similar to an artist being able to freehand a straight line or a perfect circle. The other is the emotion of it: Being able to express your feelings using phrasing and tempo and volume. Some of the hardest music to play is the simplest. It's much harder to play softly and slowly than hard and fast, but there can be so much more emotion in it (if done well). Being able to draw circles doesn't produce a Renoir.

Playing it louder doesn't help, I know from experience.
But maybe I am a Grinch, I never cared for these types of ballads. I'm not really sure why, but in my case it certainly is true that I noticed that my brain works differently compared to most people for specific things. Emotions are certainly one of them. There is plenty of music that makes me feel emotions, but ballads are typically not one of those and I find them boring and uncomfortable to listen to. There are obviously exceptions, even within Band-Maid songs like about Us, Wonderland or the Acoustic version of Puzzle which I really like and do make me feel emotions, but just in general these type of slower "cheesy" (to my ears) songs are not for me.
So I don't think it's the heart, I think it's the brain (at least in my case).

Hmmmmm, kinda bitter sweet here for me. Glad you got back to Band-Maid but sad you rifled through one of their best tunes like you had a hot date waiting at the end of the react and talked over everything., especially Kanami's solo. Personally I'd rather not even see this type of react if your not into it. Do it for the love of a song, not just to do a react. I truly hope this is not what the allure of the "Patreon" $$ is doing to reactors. Patreon is agenda driven that I can have no part in. Look forward to your next react...thanks

    • @falconsooner
      @falconsooner 2 роки тому +2

I understand your sentiment but have a different perspective. Reactors don't make any $$$ off BM reactions and Jack puts a lot of time into the reactions and licks, chords etc. He has reacted to BM way more than any other band because he finds them interesting (Expect the Unexpected).
Patreon is the one way that reactors can make money off their efforts plus it does ensure a reactor hears a song that you want him/her to. I suggested both Corallium and Don't You Tell Me to him through Patreon and he enjoyed both of those. If not for Patreon he might not have gotten around to listening to them. Jack's reactions (part 1) have been a bit shorter than they use to be in an effort to make them more YT algorithm friendly. Reminder there is still a part 2 of this where he will expound on the elements he found interesting. Also music hits folks differently. For example Jack really liked Wonderland...in fact he probably liked it more than I do. I'm sure he would prefer Wonderland to Daydreaming whereas I'm the opposite.

    • @MaartenT
      @MaartenT 2 роки тому +1

That is a really weird statement to me. Reactors shouldn't only react to songs they like, they should listen to songs and say what they think about them (hence reacting to the song). If they like it, great. If they don't they should say so as well, preferably in a civil way, no need to attack people who like specific music. Music is art. People don't like the same things about art and not everyone likes the same art. That's what makes music so great imo. The world would be a boring place if everyone liked the same things.
Reactors are not meant to be advertisers of bands (even though I discovered a lot of bands because of reaction channels). I would rather have honest reactors who say how they feel than people lying that they love everything because people request those songs in the hope of either growing their channel or get more patrons.
There are plenty of those channels around with people just trying to say what the fans want to hear and I usually can quickly sniff them out and stop watching their stuff. It personally bothers me to no end.

I really do not understand musicians who give a statement, that they are not a fan of ballads or Musicals. Every song is different and there are so many ballads and also musical songs which are amazing. Some musical stuff is also usable as Rock songs, only think about Phantom of the Opera by Nightwish or Defying Gravity ( Wicked ) by Kerry Ellis and Brian May.
I have for sure also my main direction which is Rock, but I found good music in every genre. You as a musician should also be open for the whole bandwidth of music.

If I find ones that I enjoy I'm pleasantly suspired. But it's just daft to think I'm going to really, really love something (that I know from years and years of listening to, learning, studying and playing music) I tend to be a bit indifferent towards.
      People have different tastes

    • @MaartenT
      @MaartenT 2 роки тому

I am not a musician, but I can confidently say that ballads and musicals in general are not for me. Does that mean I won't give them a chance? No. It means I usually don't like them when I do give them a chance. I have over 1100 CD's/ music DVD's/Blu-ray's in my collection and have listened to a lot of different genres and subgenres over the years (from gabber hardcore when I was young over Hip-hop to Punk and Reggae/Ska into a lot of different Metal genres as well as Modern Classical, Ambient, Psytrance, Drum & Bass, some Jazz, IDM/Electronica, ...). I can find something I like in most genres I have listened to, although there are some exceptions.
I still am not a huge fan of most ballads I have heard, the same with musicals. I am sure there are some out there that I would like, but sifting through the stuff I really dislike makes it difficult to try and get into them.
I don't think anyone saying that they don't like a specific genre or style of music means that they dismiss it outright or say that it's bad. It just means it's generally not for them.
I will always do my best to not say music is bad, I don't think bad music exists, but that doesn't mean that I like every genre or style. Everyone has a different taste in music and that's just what makes music so great imo.
      Edit:
Also, ignoring my preconceptions on the female Japanese bands last year and giving Band-Maid a chance opened me up to a whole new category of music I hadn't really explored yet. It has plenty of parts I am still not a huge fan of (usually the more poppy chorusses), but I do enjoy most of the bands I have heard in general at least somewhat and I am getting more and more used to the parts I really didn't like in the beginning. It made me also spend way too much money importing all that music, but I am still glad I gave them a shot after ignoring all those videos previously. It is incredible how talented the musicians in a lot of those bands are.
