Thumbs up. I grew up with the rock music of the 70s and 80s. That's why I'm very happy that Band-Maid exists today because there are really more than enough metal bands. Band-Maid can play any kind of music and whatever style of music they play, they are always among the best in the field. As far as I know, YOLO is the oldest Band-Maid song by Kanami.

    • @lordvorador5735
      @lordvorador5735 2 роки тому +11

Kanami composed the melody of YOLO in her singer-songwriter days, pre BAND-MAID. She rearranged it & the rest of the Maids added their flair & Miku her lyrics for the BAND-MAID song. So, from a certain point of view, you are correct. It is their oldest Kanami composed song.

I agree. I like the retro sound. But the modern sound is great too. I think there is a balance between appreciating the past and being stuck in the past. Don't be stuck in the past.
I see people listening only to music from 30 years ago. So sad. I mean, that's fine if it's new to you. But don't listen to the same music for 30 years. That is so sad.

Very true! They've positioned themselves in such a way that they have a tonne of artistic freedom to blend different genres and style, without alienating the fan base, never really clocked that before, cheers for that mate

Love how this MV starts in monochrome and then introduces splashes of colour - red of drums and Miku's flower and then the blue of Saiki's flower and then the green of Kanami's lead guitar, etc, until it's all in colour by the last verse. I know the maids understand the Sumi-e aesthetic in Japanese art (which is when the black ink is the only colour on the white paper, although small pieces of other colours are allowed) and chose it as the colour scheme for their maid costumes originally - as seen on the Thrill MV. Thanks, Jack, for the explanation of everything else going on in this video!

Wow, one of my all time favourites. The song was composed in 2016 and published on the single (or EP) YOLO, the first work entirely written, produced and arranged by the band (and which also contains two magnificent songs such as Matchless Gum and Unfair Game plus instrumental YOLO). Probably the song has all the characteristics of their very particular way of composing that they have later developed over the years. For their first personal album the girls showed considerable daring by writing some really progressive lines (those second verses...). I highly recommend that album, its quality is tremendous (and instrumental YOLO will allow you to discover some complex subtleties). Great job Jack! A pleasure to listen to Band Maid in company.

@@philproffitt8363 The problem is that the vocals are so damn good (melody + delivery + arrangement) that they're unusually distracting from the unusually amazing instrumental parts throughout the entire song.

I've been looking forward to you doing this one. I love the mixture of space and complexity, and the way it creates an almost meditative ambience beneath the strong vocal melody. I agree they nailed it in terms of maintaining enough energy while slightly dialling things back. My highlight is Kanami's background work after the sort-of bass solo you mentioned. Also, like many I found the song title off-putting, but in fact the lyrics are among their best.

This song, more than most BAND-MAID songs, strikes me as "Effective Songwriting 201" in that it's a little more than basic, but not too far. For BAND-MAID it's really pretty simple. I love how the guitar solo is frenetic, and then MISA's bass feature contrasts that completely, ringing out just a few notes.

    • @JbfMusicGuitar

Great reaction to a great song, Jack. I'm looking forward to your follow-up tutorial video on it. Regarding the visuals, for me, I see a series of yearly Band-Maid rocker MV's filmed on a sound stage uniquely decorated for each song:
2016, we got "Alone" with a drab stage floor that looks like a snake pit of electronic cables strewn out all over each other.
2017, we remain drab in "YOLO" with broken pipes overhead and surrounding them, and an introduction to Saiki's make-up and lipstick shining over a darkened background.
2018, we reach the peak of dark and dreary with "Dice". Might as well have been filmed in black and white.
2019, everything turns around as the pipes turn into bright florescent lighting (ala "Seven Nation Army") in "Blooming" and once again Saiki's lipstick and eye shadow shines.
Side point: Each of those 4 rockers is structured the same way. 3 verses, 2nd verse is most complex, solos after the 2nd chorus. The drumming, bass, and lead guitar in each of the 4 is off the charts.
Finally, just fyi, in your video description above, you accidentally wrote "Don't You Tell Me Live". Doesn't change a thing, still a great reaction.

Thanks as always for a quick and concise review. One of their earlier songs and videos but still with that patented B-M sound. This was the A-Side song on the single. The two B-Sides, "Unfair Game" and "Matchless Gum", to my ears, are a bit better.

Here is a very rare video of Band-Maid introducing and playing YOLO live for the first time at Camden The Underworld on 12/10/16. What also makes this fancam unique is it shows Kanami making probably her biggest flub she’s ever made when she started playing her first verse riff in the wrong key. It was a new song so she’s forgiven.😉 Enjoy: ua-cam.com/video/Rpd-NgatStU/v-deo.html
BTW -- Up until about 2018-19, when they use to play all their songs exactly as recorded in the studio, I use to sync up the fan video with the album recording and, with a little mix from the live video for ambience, playback the fan vid with perfect sound. I did that for years and still occasionally do. In the last few years they seem to go off sync on a few songs, but it still works on others. Their older songs are. 🔥🔥🔥
Here's how to do it: Search out an old fan vid of say, YOLO (link above), and open it up in one window, and then grab their official release in another window (it can just be an album release with no vid): ua-cam.com/video/wKZbzcUdY1g/v-deo.html Then sync them up with a few clicks by counting off the initial beats, and wall-a... perfect audio with a live performance that didn't exist. Hearing Band-Maid with great sound is the Real Existence, right? 🤘🤣 Thx, Jack!

Had a similar problem at a gig a few weeks back, was in the wrong tuning for the song... managed to figure out a way round it quickly enough, but still had that moment of sheer panic, lol!
Yeah, if they play to a click it should be pretty easy to line stuff up like that, fun way of doing thing! Cheers Tom
