Kanami: invited by Miku Akane: invited by Kanami Misa: invited by Akane Saiki: got scammed! They're a breath of fresh air with their genre blending Rock, these girls know their stuff!
@@JbfMusicGuitar Miku was originally the lead singer. It was decided that her voice wasn’t powerful enough to sing the kind of songs they wanted to play. Saiki was suggested as a good match but they felt she wouldn’t join if she knew she was going to be wearing a maid outfit. So she didn’t find out about the outfits until it was time for their first performance and it was too late to back out.
As a guitar player, I find your formula really interesting, so I subscribed. And as a Band-Maid fan, I can garantee you only saw the tip of the tip of the iceberg - their musical range is wide, and every song bring something interesting and often unexpected.
Cheers mate! Yeah the first few of these I did the main feedback was to show some of these concepts in action. Awesome, Onset live seems to be a pretty popular suggestion, do you reckon that's a good shout?
@@JbfMusicGuitar their latest album is even more ridiculous. Fans thought, sure they can't beat world domination album...2 years later...wtf? Sure they can't beat this "unseen world" let's wait and see. Anything is possible with this band.
The swarm of fans commenting is due to your thoroughly thoughtful look at the song. Fans love this band for their commitment to excellence, for their obvious love of performing and each other. Bandmaid was on the verge of their first show at Budokan in Feb 2020 & due to Covid had to cancel. They responded with an online concert and a song "About Us" that is a love letter to fans and a message of hope, in it Saiki sings " it's alright we are here, no one is alone" They care and it shows; hence the somewhat hyperactive fandom (guilty).
Good to know that's how its come across, I thought Iron Maiden had a loyal fan base, but man Band-maid's ones might have them beat! 🙌 Also, that's really cool about the online concert. Very optimist vibe about the band, nice to see that kind of thing
@@JbfMusicGuitar I forgot to add they also all like a few beers 😁 Misa also enjoys Jim Beam and Laprohaig. So they are umm, down to earth I guess would be the term.
@@JbfMusicGuitar Japan have a great rock/metal scene, and a tons of them are female bands. And they all rockin. And few of them have a loyal fan base. I'm a big fan of Band maid, but also of Lovebites. React to Lovebites please, you won't regret, and wolfpack (Lovebites fans) will came. Good song to start with them is Holy war.
Their love of performing really shows in freedom live. I've never seen a band have so much fun on stage. And they way Kanami looks at Miko when Miko does her lead vocal part is pure gold.
WOW....Thank you so much for reacting to Band Maid, my favorite band.....and then a guitar lesson after?! Nice! I'm a beginner/novice player (I've been a beginner for years...haha) Hope you do more Band Maid!!!
Cheers bud! Glad you liked it, yeah I got feedback asking for practical examples of the stuff I'm talking about in these videos so started putting them in. I mean I really enjoyed this, so I should really check out more of them!
Kanami loves her tapping & slides but her solos are never overplayed & never outstay their welcome. If anything i wish they would stay around a bit longer :)
@@JbfMusicGuitar You're right. And like a lot of Maidiacs have suggested, the instrumental "ONSET" gives each member the time to shine. No one hogs the limelight in BAND-MAID :)
Great video, liked your analysis and the breakdown in the end. I also expected a very gimmicky band at first but I was surprised by how good they are, they actually write pretty good music.
Band-Maid has put out seven albums in almost eight years with 100+ songs, so they have a deep backlog, and here is a shortlist of songs to start from. Onset (official live video) it’s an instrumental Freedom (official live video) a good drum solo with a nice transition to a guitar solo Different (official music video) an anime intro to Log Horizon season 3 Warning (official music video or live) the music video is cool.
@@JbfMusicGuitar as you can see we get a wee bit excited 😊. It is like inviting someone over for what you know will be a kick ass party. One more recommendation . Anemone, it is a slower, heartbreaking song and beautiful.
You can just randomly select a song off of Band-Maid's UA-cam channel and you won't be disappointed. The same for their new album, you just grab a random song from that and enjoy as they are all great.
@@JbfMusicGuitar They are good musicians. They won't release rubbish. They throw that in the bin and get on with making good music. When they release stuff you know it has met their self-criticism. Some of them trained at the Tokyo School of Music -- they are not amateur musicians. They know when something is not good enough. The Band-Maiko videos they made were the classiest ever April Fool's Day prank -- a maiko is an apprentice geisha, so they dressed as maiko instead of maids, and blended in some traditional Japanese music with their rock sound. Jokingly I would say that Band Maiko is the only band better than Band Maid. This is a band with serious ability.
@@JbfMusicGuitar The last four albums, produced one a year, are outstanding and each a little different. The newest album runs harder and ventures into prog a little bit although even when trying to be chaotic they can't help being melodic and catchy .
@@JbfMusicGuitar you could literally blindly pick and you will probably start smiling by the halfway point of any song . Some folks Don't seem to like the "happy" tone they project. I pity those folks.
I thoroughly enjoyed and appreciate 99% of the reaction/ analysis and hit SUBSCRIBE as soon as I saw the SRV / Albert King pop up. I love the blues and SRV is my all time favorite musician. I've listened to, and loved, him for 40 years. Albert King is godlike in my book, too. In fact, anybody with the last name of King that picks up a guitar is OK with me. I love BAND-MAID as much as anybody here. They are the most unassuming, incredible band that I have ever seen. You would never imagine by looking at them that they play this type of music so, SO well. Each has incredible talent and adding that to the amazing songwriting and "showwomanship" puts this band over the top. I learned about them about 4 years ago and they've changed music for me, forever, and I've listened to them every day since. The 1% that I dislike about this reaction is that Tiny Hat 👒 gets credit for introducing you to BAND-MAID. Everyone here will agree with me in saying that is the only part that stinks. 🦨 p.s. 👍👒😁👏👏
Nice approach to reaction videos. I noticed no one else mentioned it so I will: When the three guitarists were gathered in front of the drummer, they were making funny faces at each other trying to make her laugh. The do that a lot. You can see more of them having fun together in the Official Live video of Freedom.
@@JbfMusicGuitar The members of the band have great rapport with each other, as well as with the audience. It is infectious. Happiest band, happiest music.
Thanks for doing it! Huge shout out to you for going ahead with recording even though you thought it was going to be gimmicky. One thing that I feel it's important to note is that the maid outfits are artists' choice, not an idea forced on them by their label. They're used not just as an image to make them recognisable/memorable, but also to create a "gap" between you expect based on what you see vs. what you hear when they start playing. One other thing to note is that most of the solos during the middle section were added for that live performance and aren't in the album version of the song. They keep the "official" versions of their songs tight but add stuff for the fans who go to their shows. One song has had 4 different intros in the last two years, none of which are on the album version lol. Fantastic breakdown as expected and I'm glad you enjoyed it. I was looking through your channel again and saw you did a Larry Carlton-style backing track. He's one of lead guitarist Kanami's biggest influences (along with Santana). She says that hearing Carlton's "Room 335" moved her and inspired her to get serious about playing guitar. More songs? My favourite is "Giovanni". It's pretty progressive and has a nutty guitar riff, although it's quite low in the mix. Unfortunately it doesn't have a video (they mostly chose to make videos of the more accessible songs from their new album) but it is on their official channel in their "Unseen World" Playlist. Thanks again for taking the suggestion.
Thanks dude! No problem and many thanks for the suggestion, thoroughly enjoyed it 🤘 Went into it with a totally open mind, but didn't expect quite such a polished product! Yeah the outfits are a pretty cool way to subvert expectation for sure. Larry Carlton is a ridiculously good player, I'll listen out for his and Santana's influences, see if I can spot any! Giovanni has popped up a few times in these comments, from what I can gather it'll be a lot to take it! 🤯
Thank you calling it an analysis or commentary. I hate when people call their 'reaction' videos just that and they end up pausing many times to comment. Thank you for realizing there is a difference between reaction and commentary. Thank you for the heads up and your honesty. Band-Maid rocks!
No problem Greg! One of the videos I did while back seemed to annoy people that I was pausing too much - I don't want to just sit and watch stuff (especially when there's as much going on as there is here!), so thought if I put a wee disclaimer at the start that'll let folk know what the score is 🤘
As impressive as Domination is, you don't grasp the full wonder of Band-Maid until you've heard enough of their songs to realize that songwriting is one of their two best traits. They are fantastic musicians with zero ego, they make it super-fun for the fans and they're breathing new life into hard rock that is at once reminiscent of 70's classic, 80's and 90's hard rock. Their song structures, as you saw here, can be very creative and unusual. Here's the other of their 2 best traits - they stimulate the dopamine in your head like nobody like - ever. They become seriously addicting because of that, and in such a good way. They really don't have any bad songs, but I'll recommend Blooming, Manners, Warning, Real Existence Live, Freedom Live (their live stuff is really the best if that's an option), or for a classic power ballad go for Daydreaming. Oh! Bubble MV is great and so is the combo of Secret My Lips and Secret Maiko Lips - in that order - it's a surprise.
Sure, it seems like I've got a lot more to listen to! Thanks for those suggestions Kevin, yeah I think the live stuff is the way to go here - seems to be the general consensus!
People look at me cross-eyed when I say I've found the best rock band since the Beatles, but I stand by that. 100+ songs, no duds. The Beatles quit after around 230 songs, so Band-maid are well on their way to matching their output. And, as hard as it is to admit, in terms of sheer ability on their instruments, Band-Maid are on a higher tier. This is from a guy who saw Jefferson Airplane, Jeff Beck, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Queen and a bunch of others in their heyday. Beatles #1, Band-Maid #2.
I watch reactors to get insight and analysis, I like to learn more about music! I love music, but always enjoy getting more information about what is actually happening. I also love to watch reactors first reaction to Band Maid, always fun! Band Maid is five Japanese ladies that are fantastic musicians, friends and not consumed by ego! Hope to see you react to more Band Maid! Misa, Misa, Misa, the Barefoot Bass Assassin! Kanami, lead guitar, writes the music and Miku, rhythm guitar and backing vocals and a student of Kanami's, writes the lyrics. Seven years ago, Miku formed the band and didn't even play guitar, just had the dream and determination to make it happen and found four very talented ladies to join her. Band Maid rocks!
@@JbfMusicGuitar she was actually singing in an idol band, but she found out that this is not the type of music she wanted to continue. She then got the idea to combine Maid uniform with cool music, to create the famous gap (you know the story). She hadn't even touched a guitar for longer than a month before they played their first concert. You can definitely say that she has improved since then! Yeah, Miku has a drive unlike many others, and when she has set her eyes on something, she achieves it 🙂
@@JbfMusicGuitar She was going to be the lead singer, but felt her voice wasn't strong enough for the type of music she wanted to play. So, they recruited Saiki for lead vocals. She didn't want to feel useless, so in addition to back-up vocals, she took up rhythm guitar and started learning to play under the tutelage of the lead guitarist Kanami. At first, Kanami would write simple rhythm sections for Miku, but now, Miku is pretty good so Kanami just writes music and Miku just plays it. She's very dedicated. One of my favorite thigs about Japanese female musicians is their absolute dedication to their craft, their precision, and the constant drive to improve. Miku plays Zemaitis guitars and even has her own signature model called "Flappy Pigeon". It's a really beautiful guitar with an intricately carved plate. So yeah, from not knowing how to play, to having a signature guitar in 7 years. She's amazing.
Enjoyed your analysis and breakdown. There are actually videos from a limited edition DVD/BD of each individual member playing their parts for this song (and a few other songs). They get blocked from YT whenever someone tries to upload them, but I'm sure someone knowledgeable could point you towards a valid link. Regarding the composition of the band's music, their first two mini-albums were written by professional songwriters from their label, but they were finally given permission to write their own songs starting with their 3rd album. After that, almost everything they've recorded has been their own material. This track (Domination) is from their fifth album (World Domination), which they composed themselves. Their normal songwriting process is: Kanami (lead guitarist) comes up with the riffs and overall melody of a song, she sends it to Akane (drums) and Misa (bass), who add their own flourishes and ideas. After this, Miku (rhythm guitar) writes the lyrics, sometimes with input from Saiki (lead vocals), who is the one who gives "final approval" that a song is good enough to release. Kanami really seems to enjoy challenging herself and the other members to play more and more difficult arrangements, which you can really see in their latest album (Unseen World).
Thanks Simeon! That sounds really cool, love when you can hear the parts isolated like that. Cheers for the info, I was wondering if they has a team of songwriters around them, I wonder if they picked up some tricks and ideas from working with them on those first few albums? That's a pretty slick production line, all I can say is it certainly seems to be working for them 🤘
@@JbfMusicGuitar there are some very good translated interviews in the Bandmaid Reddit where they talk about composing, influence, and how the early writers helped them learn.
Compared to many bands nowadays, these ladies were not thrown together wildly, but more or less found themselves. Some call it fate. Rhythm guitarist Miku Kobato had the idea for the band while working in a maid cafe. That's where the outfits come from. She saw Kanami (lead guitarist) online in solo videos and simply asked her to join the band. She already knew and worked with Akane Hirose (drummer), who went to the same music school as Misa (bass). Finally, Saiki Atsumi was 'lured' into the band after they were given a tip-off by Miku's agency at the time. :) That these ladies are more than just a band could be seen well here, but I think it can best be seen in the live video for 'Freedom' from the same show, which also has a nice guitar solo. Or, if you are interested in an instrumental, there is no way around 'Onset'. :) 【 'Our rock never dies, ever. Forever!' - from 'Manners' by Band-Maid 】 🕊️
Wow, that's really interesting! I was wondering if they had been put together or had a team of writers and that kind of thing, but from what you've said, it sounds like they're a band who are very much more than the sum of their parts!
@@JbfMusicGuitar Well, for the first 3 of their albums they had the package with writers and so on. But on the third one, they got the opportunity to release a work that they completely wrote and composed themselves. The song is fittingly titled 'Alone' and the album that followed was already completely self-written. This already dates back to 2016/2017 and in January of this year they released their seventh studio album. Strictly speaking, actually their eighth. :) Of course, the overall picture of a band is made up of its individual parts. But there is also a serious difference compared to other bands. There is not just this one or two particularly talented individuals. Without exception, all of them have this enormous talent in what they do and thus each of them is an equally strong pillar in the construct called 'Band-Maid'. They function as a group/team, which goes from songwriting all the way to live performances. Needless to say, that it helps a lot that they have found each other in a 'natural' way and friendships have developed between them. Perhaps you can tell that I am very fond of these ladies. Not only for me, but for many out there, they are perhaps the best and most refreshing thing the rock genre has seen in a very, very long time.
@@JbfMusicGuitar Freedom has a drum solo preceding that guitar solo and the hand-off between drums to guitar is as good as I've ever heard, particularly since it's live.
Great to see a guitar professional reacting to my favourite band Band Maid. I would definately recommend 'Onset' live. It is an instrumental. Also 'Freedom' live from the same concert as 'Domination', has a great drum solo. You could also check out 'Warning' from their latest album 'Unseen World' Thanks for your reaction and great analysis.
Band-Maid is a very hard working band - as a result, they are always tight (even in some of the highly complex songs they do). A lot of people have watched "Dice" after their first experience of Band-Maid, or nowadays "Warning" or "Manners" are popular. If you want to see how technical they can get, you can listen to "No God", "Black Hole", or "Giovanni" (audio only) from their recently-released album "Unseen World". And wow - full points to you for referencing Kate and Anna McGarrigle harmonies - not many people know about them anymore!
Thanks bud! They really seem like 'band' musicians;it's hard to describe from a musical point of view ; sort of team players type thing? Just in the way the gel together, so would be really interesting to hear some more fiddely/technical stuff as well! Kate and Anna McGarrigle are the business! Sadly true, I wasn't sure how many people would have heard of them, but they just popped in to my head, lol!
I was pumped by both the vocal blend references (big Proclaimers fan, somewhat familiar with the McGarrigle sisters), but my thought went immediately to what I think is an even more seamless example: Hedningarna. They're mostly Swedish, but for a LONG time their singers were Finnish sisters who, if you didn't know better, you'd swear were a single singer multi-tracked. Unfortunately, there's almost mothing from them on YT.
I enjoyed your reaction, and thank you for the guitar lesson. For more great BAND-MAID guitar work, I would like to see your analysis of the instrumental Onset live at the same concert and the Blooming MV.
Hello from Germany... I would suggest Onset (live) or Warning! (live)... Onset is just one of many great instrumentals of Band-Maid and Warning! (live) is from their new album and the live version is really new on their channel and it´s an great track. Kanami (lead guitar) is also writing all of their songs, but always giving Akane (drummer) and MISA (bass) enough space just to let them breath and doing almost their own thing. Really, really talented band and 7-8 years together with 100+ songs, these ladies are workhorses and still having SO MUCH FUN! Have fun going down the pigeon hole, it´s 110% worth it!
Thanks Michael, hello from Scotland! Awesome, Onset seems to be a popular choice, I'm really intrigued to hear it! They must have a really good work flow and drive to produce so many songs. Awesome, sounds like I've got a tonne of great music to listen to! 🤘 🎶
This song was the 22nd song of 23 song stage. They always perform at least a 2 hr sets, more often goes to around 2hr 15 to 30 min sets on their concerts. You can listen to their latest album "Unseen World" (2021). It will blow your mind.
That's impressive, your brain can get a bit fuzzy with those longer 2-3 hour sets! Thanks, I'm getting the impression that newest album is quite progressive and intricate?
@@JbfMusicGuitar Yes, a lot of progressive elements that Kanami (lead g) incorporated on this album. Some of the songs are absolutely mad crazy. What's is unbelievable is that this band does not have one BAD song. All songs are anywhere from good to holy mother of god amazing.
@@JbfMusicGuitar it is definitely their most complex album to date. I have the feeling Kanami turned completely lose in this album, and just hammed in stuff regardless of intricacies. Layers on layers, with catchy choruses.

Miku, the rythm guitar/vocal who put them together. At the beginning, they have outsource who wrote song for them. But their recent stuff was all structured by Kanami (main guitar) and from there, Akane (drum) and Misa (bass) develope their part while Miku wrote the lyrics.
They formed in August 2013 and have released their own songwriting songs from Alone, whose video was released in February 2016. The composition is performed by Kanami on lead guitar, the lyrics are by Kobato on rhythm guitar, the drum part is Akane, and the bass part is Misa. When in doubt, the vocalist Saiki often decides. They are devoted to making the song cool, and it's becoming a technical, complex and fast song, but it's all a BAND MAID-like song with catchy rhythms and melodies. Even songs that are difficult to understand at one time will become better if you listen to them multiple times.
They are one of the few organically formed bands in Asia. Founded by Miku (Rythm Guitar). She never played guitar; was originally the lead singer. They recruited Saiki as lead singer later on, and Miku learned the guitar under Kanami (lead guitarist) and does back up vocal. They fought the labels to write their own song, and they succeed after writing the song Alone.
What a fantastic, wide-ranging video. First time the McGarrigles and Prodigy have been mentioned in a Band-Maid video I’m sure! I know you’ve had lots of recommendations for next Band-Maid songs. If you want an idea of their range, I suggest Wonderland (the official live video).
Thanks Rob! Hahah, good point 🤣 If a band is making me think of The Prodigy and the McGarrigle sisters they must be doing something right! Appreciate your input- I'm putting all the suggestions in to one document, how I try and work out what to listen first from there... well future me can just figure that one out!
This is a typical song for people to get introduced to Band-Maid, but it doesn't even scratch the surface of what they're capable of. I hope you're going to listen to more of them. An amazing band.
Nothing wrong with a strong ice breaker like this one! Yeah, totally, reckon I'm gonna give Onset a listen next, might jump in at the deep end after that 🤘

Kanami Tono (Ka-Na-Me) “Princess” - Lead guitar, keyboards, 29 years old, is a prolific writer of most Band-Maid material. Kanami (translates “Song Wave”) is a possessed riff-slayer who’s so damn adorable it hurts. The only thing you want from Mincho is more! Akane Hirose (A-Ka-Nay) "Gorilla" - Drums, 30 years old, band energizer & co-clown with MISA. Achi’s talents include massive consumption of noodles and bananas, of course, (even during performance!) while revolutionizing rock drumming with relentless drive, dynamics and the kick. This “DrumZilla” is the Party! MISA (Me-Sa) "Barefoot Assassin" - Bass, 28 years old. An alluring free spirit driving her 5-string to rapturous low-ends while pulling off surprising counter leads with Kanami, off-stage MISA is the band’s goofball ballerina. It's always great to see someone new, especially with music experience, react the first time to Band Maid. Your reaction is spot on. They bring the Gap, Japanese for the difference between what you see and what you hear. They are incredible musicians, song writers and composers. Any live videos like Real Existence. Or the new live vids Warning and Thrill. But any of their videos live or studio are fantastic.
@@JbfMusicGuitar The Maids have tried hard from the very beginning to separate themselves from other female bands from Japan. That is why it is so hard to compare or pigeon hole their music. For example Kanami the lead guitarist sites Carlos Santana as a primary influence on her playing.
Great analysis. As the others have mentioned the Lives (Onset, Real Existence, Play, Warning etc) are good. For a bit more unusual riff...their recent song Different is really good and fun to analyze. Manners features a great bluezy riff and Dice has that classic rock and roll driving riff
That's a very good breakdown. The rhythm goes from 3rd to 7th, instead of from the 5th. Other then that I think everything is spot on, even the muting of the strings with the index finger.
Awesome breakdown of the guitar work. I have been listening to them nonstop for about 8 months now and there is so much going on i am still hearing new bits and fills. The song writing is on a different level.
That's awesome Steven, always really cool when you find a band that keeps you coming back, getting new details every listen. Glad you enjoyed this, was a blast listening to them! 🤘🎶
So far, they have three instrumentals that i know of: 1) Onset (have official live video) 2) Don't be long (don't have MV but available on any music streams) 3) Without holding back ( have MV but for BluRay edition only, can check out at bilibili website for their video)
FYI, this song also have instrumental version as well. It also come with the BluRay edition. 1) Domination 2) DICE 3) After Life 4) NO GOD 5) Giovanni You can check out these MV at bilibili
There's another very short instrumental called "Want More!" also available on bilibili. IIRC it's largely programmed instruments. Kanami made it for last year's Day of Maid during the very height of COVID so they couldn't get together at that time to play it properly. There's also a live performance of "Go Nuts" which you can find with a bit of googling. Enjoy!
Excellent reaction and breakdown...learned a lot! Glad you liked Band Maid....it will hopefully turn into loving them like they did to me. Ritchie Blackmore and Ian Paice (Deep Purple, Mark II) left their DNA in Japan when they went in 1972 hehe.
Thank you, glad you got something from it! I've had a tonne of suggested songs to check out, not entirely sure how to figure what to go for first, but looking forward to it none the less 🤘
@@JbfMusicGuitar their first 2 albums were more pop-rock, pop-punk oriented and all the songs were written for them. They started playing their own songs in 2015 with the song "alone" however their early songs like "thrill" and "real existence" are still popular. In both technical level, and songwriting skills they consistently improved album after album. Having said that their early albums are still good. Me personally I only liked one song each from the first 2 albums. Their 3rd album, "brand new maid" is though still followed the pop-punk style, they seemed to have found their sound. I only discovered band-maid last year so there are other die-hard fans with more information. I always get new information from them! Band-maid since when they started arranging the songs (and writing most songs), whatever the style they play there have been the slight bluesy edge and progressive edge. Even in their simplest song, you'll find something interesting, unique or weird. Have fun with the journey!
@@kent-oveprestberg3578 Thanks for the info! I knew it was from the 3rd album Brand new maid! I'm learning slowly but surely thanks to you! Much appreciated!!! 👍🤩
A small note about the costumes. In Japan, there is a thing called "gap moe". Moe (pronounced Moe-eh) is more or less, appeal or cuteness depending on the context, while gap in this case is when something looks like it should be a certain way, but is in fact quite not that way. So you could have a tomboy who has a very girly hobby that is unexpected and cute. The gap being the unexpectedness of someone looking like a tomboy, having the hobby. Well, with the maid outfits you get the visual that "oh, it's cutesy girls. This music will be poppy and cute." but then they hit you with the sound. That's the gap. And Miku wanted that gap when she came up with the band. The gap of look vs sound is the concept. Hope that's a decent description of it.
Thanks, made perfect sense to me! I think the best phrase I've heard that's close to the 'gap' is 'subversion of expectation'. Oddly enough because I was aware of X Japan, I just assumed they were doing some sort of the Visual Kei thing!
Suggestions for a female Japanese guitarist starter pack: Kanami (Band Maid) Freedom, Onset, Play, Manners Midori, Miyako (Lovebites), Holy War, We the United, Raise Some Hell, Scream for Me Hazuki, Saki (Nemophila) Dissension, Raitei, Oiran, Sorai There are many more, but these are a good place to start. And Live does tend to be better with these bands when possible.
@MadsStavang Hahah, see now you're just making me want to check it out even more... if it's more packed than this song sounds like I'd be in for a pretty awesome experience!
@@JbfMusicGuitar There are a lot of songs that take a good 4-5 listens to really digest. I find that it prevents 'ear fatigue' to coin a phrase. Some bands/groups you start to get that 'I've heard this almost the same song too many times' feeling but that never happens with B-M.
I can see the enthusiasm on your face as you listened to these ladies that you're hooked. These girls are the "Perfect Storm" with regards to rock bands. Everything is perfect, not unlike the Beatles in many senses. Who started the band, how they all met and formed, how their "rock" goals were all in the same place, how they continued when they were down, how they continue once back up, multiple record labels. For me, one thing that makes them great is the back story and the sisterhood they have. Knowing them off stage is so much fun, these girls are a HOOT, but they are a well oiled machine that get the job done when needed. Welcome aboard, I know you'll stay.
My critique would be "Best live Rock band I've seen since Zeppelin in 1979. I've waited 40 years for this." PS Jimmy Page seemed to agree as he went backstage in 2016 to get a selfie with Akane, the drummer! Just for a moment, forget they're all female and forget they're dressed as maids. Two members (MISA - Bass, Akane - Drums) are classically trained pianists and musicians who studied at the Tokyo Academy of Music while Kanami, the lead guitarist, has also been playing piano since the age of 3 or 4 but is concert standard (almost unbelievably, given her skills, she only switched to guitar about 10 years ago!) They all have superb musical ability as well as passion, a lack of ego and the drive to play real, in your face, Rock which is why they are THE best live Rock band on Earth right now. OK, now that's explained, you can go back and marvel at how cute those outfits look and how incredibly beautiful all the band members are. The only band I've seen that is playing live like bands I went to see in the 70's, such as Led Zeppelin or Sabbath or Zappa. Music they write themselves, real guitars, drums and bass played loudly and with passion as well as powerful Rock vocals. They are all really close friends and know how to have fun together on stage, confident as they are in each others’ abilities and skills. They've revived the classic Rock sound and given the genre a much needed kick in the ass, as Babymetal have done for Metal. Future reactions I'd recommend, as they really shine brightest live, would be from the DVD they released in April. Hmmm, but how can I trust the words of a Certified Weirdo? ... Or does being The Certified Weirdo mean I should trust you more - Yeah, probably that one 🤘🤘🤘
I am ashamed to say, that I was at their first overseas concert at Sakura-Con 2016 (even got a shirt autographed), but after I went back to the daily grind that was the Navy, I promptly forgot about them. Fortunately, I rediscovered them (and my autographed shirt) sometime last year thanks to Chase Carneson, and now they are easily my favorite band. Like others have said, they really don't have a "bad" song, so you could just watch their entire library (and all of us maidiacs will come flocking to your channel). Still, their songs pull inspiration from a variety of genres, so depending on what you feel like listening to, there's a lot of choices. Some songs like Daydreaming or Endless Story are ballads with a lot of feeling in them, and some are heavier and more metal, like Rinne or After Life. As a general rule of thumb, the live concert videos are even better than the studio recordings, but I would shy away from fan cams in case of terrible audio quality.
That's cool, I remember hearing some J-rock and J-pop stuff years back and was really surprised at how they manges to neatly mash different genres and styles together. Thanks for the tip, will stick to the live stuff to begin with 🎶
Brilliant! Thanks Jon! I can fall off in to pure music theory stuff, so if I ever go on a tangent that makes zero sense, hit me up and I'll try to explain what I'm going on about!
Not gonna lie, they've got a pretty intimidating mountain of work to get through... but judging by how positive you guys are about them I'm pretty excited to embark up the journey 🎸🎶

@@JbfMusicGuitar as you read her lyrics it also seems to be a way of saying Don't look at women as inferior. Saiki the lead singer has been known to sign autographs with "just bring it, get on your knees" they are a talented, confident group .
Thanks for reacting, formed in 2013 by Rhythn Guitarist and vocalist Miku Kobato. Seven Major releases so far three mini albums and four full albums with the last released Digitally on the 13th January this year With a Physical release on the 20th January 2021. The idea behind the band is the contrast between the visuals and then the sound and also the sound and the lyrics. Members (ages between 24 to 30) Akane Hirose ;- Drums (A-chan. the beast,Gorilla) Saiki Atsume :- Vocals (Sai-chan) MISA :- Bass :- (the Assasin. Misa, Misa, Misa) Kanami Tono :- Guitars (Mincho, main songwriter) Miku Kobato :- Rhythm Guitar, Vocals, Lyricist (Small Pigeon, wide shoulders, strong grip, Karuppo) Kobato in Japanese can be interpreted as small pigeon and Miku never met a pun she didn't like or a chance to mess with peoples heads Po!!. Also they have a slightly twisted sense of humour, for example the single Alone was released on Valentines day, and for the last two years on April fools day they rename themselves, the bands social media as Band Maiko where they dress as apprentice geisha's and release a video of a song written in the geisha dialect with some traditional instruments in it. Relentless live band due to having played basically anywhere they could plug in they also tend to add extra parts to the songs live , The costumes might have got their foot in the door but they have earned what they have gotten the old fashioned way, Worked hard, Toured hard, and constantly look to improve. Check out their video for Warning! or the official live video of Real Existence. But they have a load of great tunes so you’ll get dozens of suggestions.
Miku Kobato - RHYTHM GUITAR - plays Zemaitis C24MF (Zemaitis Endorsement - with a Signature Guitar called Flappy Pigeon) - EVH Amps - Writes the lyrics - Has only been playing guitar for about 7 years. Was the singer but took a back seat voluntarily! KANAMI TONO - LEAD GUITAR - plays PRS Custom 24 (PRS Endorsement) - Mesa/Boogie Triple Rectifier. - Writes the music (one interview she states that she has a database - 2 years worth?!?!) Misa - BASS GUITAR plays Black Cloud "Smoker" and Privat Reserve (SG Style) bass - (Black Cloud Endorsement) Orange AB200B MKIII Amps Akane Hirose - DRUMS - Plays TAMA drums with Zildjian Cymbals - Roland KD-A22 (Possibly an Endorsement with TAMA and ROLAND) Saiki - VOCALS - Sennheiser microphones and DPA Microphones
That was a great analysis. Really enjoyed that. So Band-Maid put themselves together more or less as a musician who knew a musician who knew a another musician. Someone mentioned this already but the lead writer for the band is the lead guitarist, Kanami Tono. The band founder and rhythm guitarist, Miku Kobato, is the lyricist and has been learning rhythm guitar from Kanami since 2014. Again, great analysis.
Many thanks! Did a few of these a while back and the main suggestion was to try and show some of stuff in action; much easier than trying to explain it without a guitar anyway!
Recommendations: the live versions of Onset, Play, Freedom, Moratorium, and About Us; and the MVs for Blooming, Dice, Real Existenze, Manners, and Warning. That will do for a starter set. Ah, yes, the outfits. To make a short story long, Miku (rhythm guitar/backing vocals/lyricist) had worked in maid cafes and thought that a band dressed in outfits associated with sexy submissiveness playing hard, in-your-face rock would be a great hook. Kanami (lead guitar/songwriter/principal arranger) loved the idea, largely because she has no fashion sense and this way she never had to worry about what to wear on stage. Akane (drummer) thought the idea was dumb but fun, but didn't like how the costume restricted her movement. MISA (bass) hated the costumes, and almost didn't join because of them. After MISA's reaction, Miku only told Saiki (lead vocals) that they would wear 'cute costumes ' when performing. Saiki was horrified when she saw them, not because they were maid uniforms, but because they were boring and dowdy (Saiki is quite the fashionista). Eventually, things came to a head, and Akane (the leader the band doesn't have) decreed that everyone could design their own outfits, as long as they stuck to the maid theme. Kanami kept the traditional maid outfit. Miku started heading into cosplay maid territory, like she owned stock in the ruffle-and-flounce factory. Akane initially ditched the apron, shortened the skirt, and ripped out the shoulder seams of the blouse. Later, Miku helped her make a black and white jumper that suggests a maid uniform while leaving her limbs totally free. Saiki took a head housekeeper 's uniform, sexed it up, and emerged looking like a sexy dominatrix head maid. And MISA showed up in a black dress, claiming it was a Croatian maid uniform. Or maybe Lithuanian. She finally went with Ninja maid uniform, because 'you'll never see her cleaning. '
Domination was the first BAND-MAID song I listened to properly and was totally blown away within the first half of the song. Ordered the entire back-catalogue on iTunes that night (then decided I wanted physical copies too - great idea, paying twice!). Hasn't been a day since April 18th 2020 I haven't listened to or watched some BAND-MAID. There hasn't been another band or artist that has quite the same overwhelming effect on me. I've spent an absolute fortune on merchandise too....I think it is some sort of addiction now. I find that BAND-MAID seem to connect with other musicians a wee bit more than they do 'joe public'. MISA (bass) switching back and forth between slapping and using a pick during her solo by tucking the pick up against her palm blew me away when I noticed what she was doing. As others have said they don't seem to have any 'bad' songs that I'd skip past when listening to them (there is one that I'm not that keen on but even that is still a pretty decent song and is left to play through when it comes on).
They seem to have a pretty awesome fan base; absolutely nothing wrong with buying stuff twice if it enable the artist to continue to make the music you love to hear! Yeah, that was some pretty slick pick cradling - good catch! 🤘
They didn't wrote a song for My hero academia, but they did wrote the opening for Log Horizon season 3: Different and to give Saiki's voice a rest they wrote Onset (instrumental song).
Much apprentice dude! Yeah, I'm not a huge fan of a lot of reaction stuff, so try to add a bit of insight/analysis. There's been a (quite unexpectedly!) strong response to this, so I'm sure I'll look at more of their back catalogue 🤘
Read your description. This band put themselves together started by Miku the rhythm guitarist. They received songs to play from their label early on, but then wrote & arranged Alone on their 3rd album and they never looked back.
@@JbfMusicGuitar lol ... aw boy ...the kind of question not to ask ;) I'll just leave a comment that if you absolutely want to react to their "break out" song "Thrill" you should watch the live version from the concert earlier this year and NOT the original MV :)
@@JbfMusicGuitar It's often said that every Band-Maid fan has 30 songs in their top 10. Another common one is "your favourite Band-Maid song is the last one you heard". 😁
I am a recent Maidiac convert and found them on a recommendation from another guitar channel. It didn’t take long for me to completely forget about the Maid outfits (I have come full circle and now think it’s cool). These women know music and they know their instruments very well. I’m afraid I have become a whirling fanboi since then (not becoming in someone who’s far from a teen) but I don’t care. Their music makes me happy and I smile when I listen to it. The individual personalities in the band are just the icing on the cake. They are all round wonderful and I’m very grateful I found them. I haven’t been this excited about a band’s live performances for 20+ years. Shameless admiration over. edit - I’m not going to post suggestions for another song from the Maids, as I can see the other posts and besides their obviously good options listed it is not an exaggeration to say you cannot go wrong picking anything on the official channel. Especially the live ones. I will however say that Onset, the first time I listened/watched the Tokyo Zepp live version had me in goosebumps and borderline tears.
Hahaha, imo if a band makes you excited about music there's nothing wrong with that! Thanks for that additional edit, Onset is probably gonna have to be the next one I check out, lost count of how many people have suggested it- you guys seems to know your stuff, so I figure I can't go wrong 🔥🎶
@@JbfMusicGuitar - Indeed. I have played instruments for most of my life (started on keys just before my 5th birthday) and written music too. It brings me great enjoyment. It has never been my main gig though so I am not any sort of virtuoso but I can definitely appreciate when someone knows their ****** and these gals know the way around their instruments. I always feel a bit of a heel for recommending Onset as it's an instrumental which means no Saiki and she is as important to the band as any other member but at the same time as posted above it was the first of their pieces that I listened to that had me in an emotional state after (I think it was the second of their tracks I listened to). There have since been many more for me. Of course it's all about opinions but you really cannot go wrong IMHO and I would desperately love to see them perform in person at a live gig. Fingers crossed that can happen in the near future.
Freedom(live) is a really fun song, has some great solos, and puts one in a good mood.. Thrill (music video) - The music video that helped them blow up overseas when the band was still new. Miku (2nd guitar/vocals) had just started learning guitar at that point so a couple months at most. Play - An instrumental with vocals. Onset - Instrumental As others have said just pick any from their channel, its hard to go wrong. Their catalog is large and solid.
Best rock and roll band in the world today! You might not know it but you're already a huge fan. World Domination is inevitable! Great breakdown brother!😊🤘🤘🤘🤘
See I had a sneaking suspicion I might have been a fan, but I'm very glad for your confirmation! Would love to see this live, I imagine the show is pretty spectacular. Thanks dude, glad you enjoy this one 😎🤘
Onset is probably the safe pick for a next video, but there's a song called Different and an instrumental version of Giovanni (there's no official live version and the album version has the guitar low in the mix) that feature guitars going so crazy I can't even keep up. Would be interesting to see the perspective of someone who knows what they're doing.
Cheers! Yeah Onset seems to be the most suggested, so I'll check that out first- should check out that instrumental version of Giovanni as well, sounds cool!
This is some quality reaction. Great stuff! Subscribed. Please check out more of their work. Btw Kanami the Lead guitarist is also the songwriter and arranger of the band. Her consistency and output rate is insane.
I love your analytical review. Please do more of Band-Maid. One cool thing about them is that their songs don't sound similar even after putting out 100 of them. Not a single dull song. Check out Alone, Daydreaming, Blooming, and Choose Me.
Japanese is a very lyrical language. Look at Hirose Akane's wrists on the drum solo. Her wrists are the most relaxed I have seen and that allows her a very smooth and fluid drumming style. She is the leader of the band. Misa is one of the best bass players I have seen. I love that she can play with a pick, slap and finger pick. And on the bass she can shred which is hard to do. Tōno Kanami , the lead guitarist on our right is a great rhythm and lead player who can shred with the best of them. Did you here the frequency and accuracy of those bends? Atsumi Saiki, the lead vocalist has such a great voice with an excellent range. She has outstanding stage presence. She was the last edition to the band and was deceived by Pigeon who did not tell her about the maid uniforms. She still kicks at Pigeon once in a while. Speaking of Pigeon, she is the guitarist on our left. That is Kobato Miku (a.k.a. Po which is Japanese for Pigeon). She learned to play rhythm from Kanami. She was the founding member and was supposed to be lead vocals but she felt she didn't have enough oomph. That is why they brought Saiki into the band. I love the way she harmonizes with Saiki. But I also adore the parts where she is supporting what Saiki is singing with a little something different. It gets to be like Saiki telling the audience something with her vocal part and then Miku kind of edifying what Saiki just sang. Gets a conversational quality to the songs. You can't go wrong no matter what you pick. I would recommend On Set and Play.
Cheers mate! Yeah their voices blend really well together! I've enjoyed everything I've heard from them so far, I checked out Onset (ua-cam.com/video/cQ5gVMKbmao/v-deo.html) and Play (ua-cam.com/video/yfDp_OxficU/v-deo.html) a wee while back- a total pleasure to listen to their stuff and try to break it down 🎶
Great point about not needing to understand the lyrics to still absolutely enjoy the vocals. It reminds me of opera where the voice is one of the primary instruments and the actual lyrics meaning is secondary (and in opera, often quite silly). However, having said that, the can be some added meaning with the English subtitles turned on, although the translations often don't scan poetically/melodically particularly well.
Opera is such a good point of reference, I'd never have made! I've been trying to read the lyrics more... but they always have so much going on musically, I usually get distracted, lol
Thank you for a really interesting and detailed critique. It was really interesting seeing you deconstruct the guitar work. The ladies pull in influences from from all over the rock, blues, jazz, etc. spectrum - it is one of the reasons I enjoy their music so much. I see that the Bandmaniacs have already dropped a lot of the background info on the band, but one item I didn't see was that Miku (rhythm guitar, backing vocals and lyrics) didn't actually play guitar when the band started. However, she started taking lessons from Kanami (lead guitar and music) and can now really contribute. They have all really pushed each other to always get better. When working on "Different" (which is the opening song for season 3 of the anime Log Horizon), Kanami asked Akane (drums) what her best bpm was and then wrote the song to be faster than that. It was their fastest song for quite a while. If you want to hear a really interesting song of organized chaos, I highly recommend it.
Very glad you enjoyed it! Yeah it's been fantastic getting all these great insights and bits of information. They'll have a pretty unique bond from teaching/learning guitar. The idea of self improvement, or musical improvement seems to be quite prominent here as well, which is just awesome - all spurring each other on to reach their full potential 🔥 Thanks for that song suggestion!
Miku, one of the guitarists, founded the band and used to work at a maid cafe in Tokyo. They called themselves Band Maid because of that and it’s a great gimmick to make uneducated westerners think they’re cute little anime characters or they’re like Baby Metal (NOT!) They are very talented musicians, writers and the lead singer is amazing. They have the whole package.❤️
The aesthetic of a band has been a part of music for generations. Not as much in western music now but for a long time it was there. Whether it’s kiss, twisted sister, the grunge era (which was an aesthetic look and not an actual musical genre), to slip knot, and many others. In Japan the aesthetic is still an aspect of the music (not in all groups, but many). Musical talent and skill is very important in Japan, go listen to enough Babymetal and you’ll here a lot of great music, talent and passion that goes into it. Lovebites from Japan shred and are highly talented, but still have an aspect of the aesthetic. End of the day, we all need to remember that it’s about the music, if a band has an aesthetic then that’s just an added aspect and is not an actual indication of the music or the talent behind it. My name is Jake and this has been my TedTalk. P.S. nice reaction, well done sir 👏🏻👏🏻.
Thanks Jake, appreciated your Ted Talk! 🤣 I mean even with bands now there is a clear aesthetic choice (not as obvious as Kiss perhaps!) if you look at a K-pop group, metal core band, country singer or whatever you can get an idea of what they play by their dress code, I suppose?
@@JbfMusicGuitar Yea, but I think a lot of the time that’s not a clear choice so much as a culture style. Like metal-core bands just dress like people that tend to listen to metal core. Same with country musicians. K-Pop I would assume is a bit more planning though, much like the boy bands in America throughout history. Even the early days the Beatles had a uniformed look.
You said it perfectly, despite the dressing as maids, there is no gimmick here, just pure talent and a lot of hard work and practice! This is a Rock band who are at the top of the game, world class musicians. 😀 One thing i can tell you is, you will never find a bad song from Band Maid, quite the opposite, every song you hear becomes your new favorite! Check out their songs: Manners - Warning - Daydreaming and many more! Another band i will suggest you check out is Lovebites - "Holy War" Live 2020. Female Metal band from Japan, also fantastic musicians! Thank you!
Thanks Jorge! Jim S used the phrase 'well oiled machine' in the comments here - totally sums up the impression I got! Cheers for those suggestions, I'll be sure to give them a listen 🎶 🤘
You should check out all of them. Sometimes things get blown out of proportion, but not with BAND-MAID. As to analysis, if you want something more Metal influenced and heavy try 'Rinne'. But if you just want a perfectly put together song then 'Blooming' is the way to go. But for more LIVE BAND-MAID then do 'Real Existence' LIVE.

@@JbfMusicGuitar they honestly Don't IMHO. I have favorites of course but no OMG, skip songs on any record. May I recommend Wonderland for it's jazzy, multilayered approach, YOLO is an underappreciated song with a tapping solo that would make EVH proud.
Excellent video!. I´ve enjoyed and learned. All in this band spins about songwriting and musicianship. I recommend their song Onset (in their official YT channel). It´s an instrumental and I think you will appreciate the instrumentation because it has a really good mix.
The best metal/hard rock band of the last 25 yrs. So much talent packed into this band- I'd put any of these women up against the Legends of Rock, and they would more than hold their own.
Back in the beginning, Miku (rhythm guitar/vocals) couldn’t play guitar (see the Thrill video) and Kanami (lead guitar) taught her how to play. Now in the most recent releases Miku is a solid guitarist in addition to being a fantastic backup vocalist (she harmonizes with Saiki beautifully).
A huge part of BAND-MAID is the drummer Akane. She is special. She do not play as most drummers do. Most drummers keep the tempo and plays some rudiments (I think it is called so in drum terms) combining them to a rhythm that is the basis for the band. That is not how Akane plays. Her arms are flying around all the time and the drums seems to be hit almost at random in very melodic rhythms and unexpected ways. Therefore you hear Akane clearly through all the song. She is ever present. And it sounds good. Listen to any BAND-MAID song and concentrate on the drums. The fans claims her to be the best drummer. I doubt that, but she is good, very good. And different. In particular different. And then she is smiling while waving her arms. That's charm! I like Akane, and she is the main reason for me listening to BAND-MAID.
Akane, Misa, & Kanami formally studied music, and Japan is serious with their music schools. Miku founded the band and was the sole lead vocalist, but she realized her voice didn’t have the raw power for the music she envisioned, so she recruited Saiki to be the vocal lead. That said, Miku has a lovely voice that is pleasant and soothing to listen to along with harmonizing beautifully with Saiki. This live version of “Domination” is excellent and, in my opinion, much better than the original studio version. Great review and guitar breakdown.

Akane: invited by Kanami

So she didn’t find out about the outfits until it was time for their first performance and it was too late to back out.

Daydreaming is an excellent song. When that lead solo kicks in it lifts the whole song into a different league.
She didn't even play seven years ago?? Wow, that's some impressive vision, drive and motivation!
That these ladies are more than just a band could be seen well here, but I think it can best be seen in the live video for 'Freedom' from the same show, which also has a nice guitar solo. Or, if you are interested in an instrumental, there is no way around 'Onset'. :)
【 'Our rock never dies, ever.
Of course, the overall picture of a band is made up of its individual parts.

Quick question: are these guys 'manufactured' in that they've been put together and have a team of songwriters behind them?
Miku, the rythm guitar/vocal who put them together. At the beginning, they have outsource who wrote song for them. But their recent stuff was all structured by Kanami (main guitar) and from there, Akane (drum) and Misa (bass) develope their part while Miku wrote the lyrics.

@@JbfMusicGuitar my pleasure 🤗

Welcome aboard, Jack. You are embarking on (along with many others - 110 million YT views!) an awesome hard-rock journey with 5 incredible women. Here's my intro blurb for those who may be new to Band-Maid:
BAND-MAID’s songs and sound beat with the heart and soul of all rockers. But you’ll also hear heavy influences of Punk, Metal and Pop, with nice touches of Blues, Jazz, Funk and Grunge. Sometimes they use multiple genres within the same song. Their Composition, Execution, Consistency (115 songs with their latest album, “Unseen World”), Uniqueness, Charisma, Charm and, oh yeah, Cuteness factor, position them as becoming the hard rock Beatles of our time! In other words, they’re destined for mega-stardom. Each member's personalities are super interesting and their musicianship among the best. Their writing, arrangements and overall sound, especially guitar tones and drums, are kick-ass! Having seen them LIVE, I can honestly say their performance, sound, stage appearance, and band synergy is off the rails spectacular.
Band-Maid is the only band in decades where I love nearly EVERY song they’ve done. I have over 70 favorites! "Thrill" (2014) is a great place to start: ua-cam.com/video/Uds7g3M-4lQ/v-deo.html Their later songs from albums Unseen World, Conqueror, World Domination, and Just Bring It drive even more - Warning, No God, H-G-K, Black Hole, Different, Rinne, Blooming, Moratorium, Domination, Clang, Dice, Spirit, Turn Me On, Fate, Play, Hide-And-Seek, Secret My Lips, Puzzle, Glory, Choose Me, I Can’t Live Without You, and on and on. But don’t miss out on their powerful, beautifully written, mid-tempo songs like Daydreaming, About Us, Anemone, Endless Story, PAGE, Mirage and Smile... or more punky like After Life, Don’t Let Me Down and Screaming… or funky like Bubble… or bluesy like Manners and The Dragon Cries… or poppy like Start Over… or a bit jazzy like Wonderland… or cultural like the Band-Maiko series… or instrumentals like Don’t Be Long, Onset, Without Holding Back and Going Nuts! And many are represented with over 35 well produced music videos. ua-cam.com/users/BANDMAID
Most performances should be experienced from their LIVE audience & online OKYU-JI concerts. Tokyo's LINE CUBE SHIBUYA on February 14th (“Domination” ua-cam.com/video/QbyQCJn6rYg/v-deo.html), ZEPP 2018, Shinkiba Studio Coast 2017 and some of the better 2019 tour Fan vids are excellent. Here’s four of what it’s like to see Band-Maid LIVE at super intimate venues. These two taken by Vladimir Chupin in Hamburg: ua-cam.com/video/__1th7ctgMo/v-deo.html, and a fun, wonderful live performance in Amsterdam of Miku introducing "Don't You Tell Me" (with MISA & Kanami's great instrumental exchange) and "Turn Me On” (with MISA's solo intro): ua-cam.com/video/kfYQoWBlSpk/v-deo.html. Like most Band-Maid songs, I like them from the get-go but really start to appreciate them after more hearings and seeing their LIVE videos. I'll go back and see an older song like YOLO, Order, Shake That, Freezer, Before Yesterday, Real Existence, Non Fiction Days and Alone, etc. and realize there's no band that can consistently construct and play like Band-Maid. For fun, check out an awesome, little known "Mega Band-Maid Mix" by DJ Ray of some of their earlier stuff: facebook.com/djrayboston/videos/1004709499579009
Band-Maid members are:
Saiki Atsumi (Sy-i-Key or Psyche) “Ice Queen" - Lead vocals, arrangements and melodies. At 27 and the youngest, “Sensei” (Teacher) as band members call her, has the last word on many musical decisions. High-heels or sneakers, Sai-chan’s smile melts away her sometimes perceived, coldish persona. Saiki’s powerhouse performances, charisma, and voice focus the experience that’s driven her to the top echelon of hard rock frontwomen... or frontmen!
Miku Kobato (Me-Ku) "Small Pigeon" - Rhythm guitar, vocals, lyricist, 29 years old. “Koba”, as Saiki calls her, is the Band founder and a firecracker MC & PR SpokesPigeon, po! Her “Magic Spell Time” charm and energy ignite the room. Kuruppo! No, no, no… KURUPPO!!
Sometimes seen as the Mysterious One because she lets her instrument do the talking, the Assassin literally kills it… every note.. uniting Band-Maid’s world-class rhythm section. A slug of JB, a slight grin, and let the slappin’ begin… MISA! MISA! MISA!

Thanks for the run down! I certainly have a mountain of music to work my way through!
Glad you liked it! They certainly seem to have hit on a pretty special, unique sound and approach 🎶
@@JbfMusicGuitar The Maids have tried hard from the very beginning to separate themselves from other female bands from Japan. That is why it is so hard to compare or pigeon hole their music. For example Kanami the lead guitarist sites Carlos Santana as a primary influence on her playing.
@@thunderchild7137 That's pretty cool, more a case of forging their own niche than settling in to one that's already there. Pretty badass!
Great analysis. As the others have mentioned the Lives (Onset, Real Existence, Play, Warning etc) are good. For a bit more unusual riff...their recent song Different is really good and fun to analyze. Manners features a great bluezy riff and Dice has that classic rock and roll driving riff
Thank you! There have been a few mentions of their new stuff in these comments - colour me intrigued!
That's a very good breakdown. The rhythm goes from 3rd to 7th, instead of from the 5th. Other then that I think everything is spot on, even the muting of the strings with the index finger.
Good catch! I should have given it a closer listen and pulled up the studio version - lesson learned, lol 🤣
And the Pigeon's mission grasps another. You've got alot of awesome music to discover from these ludicrously talented ladies.
Seems that way 🤘
Awesome breakdown of the guitar work.
So far, they have three instrumentals that i know of:
1) Onset (have official live video)
2) Don't be long (don't have MV but available on any music streams)
3) Without holding back ( have MV but for BluRay edition only, can check out at bilibili website for their video)
FYI, this song also have instrumental version as well. It also come with the BluRay edition.
1) Domination
2) DICE
3) After Life
4) NO GOD
5) Giovanni
You can check out these MV at bilibili
Thanks for that! You guys have been so awesome at filling me in here, really apprentice it 🤘✨
There's another very short instrumental called "Want More!" also available on bilibili. IIRC it's largely programmed instruments. Kanami made it for last year's Day of Maid during the very height of COVID so they couldn't get together at that time to play it properly. There's also a live performance of "Go Nuts" which you can find with a bit of googling. Enjoy!
Band Maid is true musical talent. Kanami hits 24 notes per second. Nickelback hits one power chord per second. Night and day
You should check out Onset (Live). It's an instrumental and I think it would be something you'd really enjoy.
Cheers Sean, sounds cool, would be pretty interesting to see how they tackle an instrumental 🤔
Right before the drum solo Miku falls down after her shred session with Kanami. I watched like ten times before noticing.
I'll have to watch it again and look out for it!
@@JbfMusicGuitar IMO she stepped aside to give room to the drummer.
@@goodsong6732 yes, she does'nt fell she stepped down as you said👍🏻
@@kent-oveprestberg3578 possible but it looks like she falls backward and then pops back up. In either case it did not change the performance.
"Moratorium" that came out 4 years ago is pretty epic for their earlier work.
Thanks for the suggestion, do you reckon their first few albums are on par with the newer stuff, or is it just a different sort of style?
@@lurkmerchant ehumm...Alone was on their 3rd mini album Brand New Maid from 2016. 🙂👍🏻
@@kent-oveprestberg3578 Thanks for the info! I knew it was from the 3rd album Brand new maid! I'm learning slowly but surely thanks to you! Much appreciated!!! 👍🤩
@@lurkmerchant. Wich only song do you like from New Beginning?
Personally I like a bunch of them🙂🤘
A small note about the costumes.
Suggestions for a female Japanese guitarist starter pack: Kanami (Band Maid) Freedom, Onset, Play, Manners
Midori, Miyako (Lovebites), Holy War, We the United, Raise Some Hell, Scream for Me
Hazuki, Saki (Nemophila) Dissension, Raitei, Oiran, Sorai
There are many more, but these are a good place to start. And Live does tend to be better with these bands when possible.
Cheers Michael! Very much appreciate the starter pack, I'll be sure to give them a listen 🤘
Giovanni from new album? :) Good reaction.
Oh man, then he will doing nothing but saying "it is a lot going on here" and "it is difficult to decide what to talk about" 😂
Thanks! Sure, I'll pop it on my ever growing list of songs to check out!
'well oiled machine' - spot on Jim! That's the phrase I was looking for; very much the main takeaway I got form this; thanks!
Music they write themselves, real guitars, drums and bass played loudly
and with passion as well as powerful Rock vocals. Ok best. Name. Ever😂
Hmmm, but how can I trust the words of a Certified Weirdo? ... Or does being The Certified Weirdo mean I should trust you more - Yeah, probably that one 🤘🤘🤘
@@JbfMusicGuitar you'll have to play it by your gut .lol Long Live the PO!
Thanks for the tip, will stick to the live stuff to begin with 🎶
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Even though I know nothing about music I still find it interesting to listen to your breakdown of the music.
Brilliant! Thanks Jon!
I can fall off in to pure music theory stuff, so if I ever go on a tangent that makes zero sense, hit me up and I'll try to explain what I'm going on about!
What other songs should you check out? All of them... :)
Not gonna lie, they've got a pretty intimidating mountain of work to get through... but judging by how positive you guys are about them I'm pretty excited to embark up the journey 🎸🎶

That was a great analysis. Really enjoyed that. So Band-Maid put themselves together more or less as a musician who knew a musician who knew a another musician. Someone mentioned this already but the lead writer for the band is the lead guitarist, Kanami Tono.
Thanks for that, great bit of insight! Good to know they're all happy with the attire, even if they weren't all keen to begin with 🤣
Domination was the first BAND-MAID song I listened to properly and was totally blown away within the first half of the song.
Cool, thanks for that! They certainly sound like they'd write a killer intro theme song 🎸🎶
@@JbfMusicGuitar killer yeah that about sums up different lol
Outstanding job mate! I see a lot of B-M reactors, but this was stellar. Hope to see more.
Cheers! I wonder if having the label's songs had an impact on them? I'd imagine you could learn a tonne from working with a the writing team!
🤘🤘❤🤘🤘 MISA MISA MISA!!!! 🤘🤘
This band is excellent and their lives are fantastic because they add little extras that are just great ear candy!!!! 😁✌
Yeah, that little solo section in this song was a great idea - just let everyone have a party piece without derailing the song!
Very cool and insightful video my dude! Band-Maid definitely rock! This isn't even one of their best songs. 🤘
Cheers mate! 'Isn't even one of their best songs'?!?!?!? 🤯
What would you rank as like their top 5 songs?
@@JbfMusicGuitar lol ... aw boy ...the kind of question not to ask ;)
I'll just leave a comment that if you absolutely want to react to their "break out" song "Thrill" you should watch the live version from the concert earlier this year and NOT the original MV :)
@@JbfMusicGuitar It's often said that every Band-Maid fan has 30 songs in their top 10. Another common one is "your favourite Band-Maid song is the last one you heard". 😁
@@JbfMusicGuitar Blooming, Moratorium, Screaming, Giovanni, Play, Puzzle, Reincarnation.... These are my favorites. Really every song is solid.
Onset - Instrumental
As others have said just pick any from their channel, its hard to go wrong. Their catalog is large and solid.
Thanks for that! I must say the concept of an instrumental with vocals is very intriguing!
@@JbfMusicGuitar Groovy😎🤘
@@doobiejones9388 See, now I'm just gonna have to go and watch the Evil Dead, lol!
@@JbfMusicGuitar 😎
Yes, please, react to Onset a live video......... I recommend to react to Band maid live....... they are awesome live....
I think this has been the most suggest so far by quite a bit, looking like I'll have to check it out at this rate 🤘
@@JbfMusicGuitar It's an instrumental song to give a break to the singer in concerts, but a sample to know how good musicians they are.
Awesome! Glad you liked it, yeah I've had a lot of suggestions to look at Onset, so I'll try and juggle my schedule to fit that in 🤘
I love your analytical review. Please do more of Band-Maid. One cool thing about them is that their songs don't sound similar even after putting out 100 of them. Not a single dull song. Check out Alone, Daydreaming, Blooming, and Choose Me.
Thank you, glad you hear that you enjoyed this approach! This song was certainly very high energy, of they keep that up, I'm sold 🔥🎶
I've enjoyed everything I've heard from them so far, I checked out Onset (ua-cam.com/video/cQ5gVMKbmao/v-deo.html) and Play (ua-cam.com/video/yfDp_OxficU/v-deo.html) a wee while back- a total pleasure to listen to their stuff and try to break it down 🎶
6:12 Log Horizon, actually. Band Maid does the opening theme of Season 3.
Nice! I really need to give it a listen 🤘
Maid in Japan.
Time to react to this --> Sokoninaru - Tenohira De Odoru
_(If you like Math Metal)_
Thanks for your input - I'll make sure to add these to my list of songs to check out 🔥🎶
I always love the surreal image of two five foot tall women in maid outfits just jamming out on guitar in the middle of the stage before Akane’s solo.
Oh man, I hadn't even thought about that- it is quite bizarre! 🤣
The idea of self improvement, or musical improvement seems to be quite prominent here as well, which is just awesome - all spurring each other on to reach their full potential 🔥
Thanks for that song suggestion!
I had assumed it was some sort of Visual Kei off shoot, smart marketing move for sure and really cohesive vision of what they want to be!
I mean even with bands now there is a clear aesthetic choice (not as obvious as Kiss perhaps!) if you look at a K-pop group, metal core band, country singer or whatever you can get an idea of what they play by their dress code, I suppose?
@@JbfMusicGuitar Yea, but I think a lot of the time that’s not a clear choice so much as a culture style. Like metal-core bands just dress like people that tend to listen to metal core. Same with country musicians. K-Pop I would assume is a bit more planning though, much like the boy bands in America throughout history. Even the early days the Beatles had a uniformed look.
You said it perfectly, despite the dressing as maids, there is no gimmick here, just pure talent and a lot of hard work and practice!
This is a Rock band who are at the top of the game, world class musicians. 😀
One thing i can tell you is, you will never find a bad song from Band Maid, quite the opposite, every song you hear becomes your new favorite!
Haha, yeah at this point it's looking like I'm just gonna have to make a 100 song long playlist, 🤣🤘
Cheers for those suggestions- always good to have a point to kick off from!
They have no bad songs. Do freedom next. It's fun
No bad songs?? Bold statement! But to be fair... judging by this one I don't doubt you, haha!
Thanks Juan, glad to hear it! Awesome. I'm really looking forward to checking that song out 🤘
The best metal/hard rock band of the last 25 yrs. So much talent packed into this band- I'd put any of these women up against the Legends of Rock, and they would more than hold their own.
Thanks Vaughn - you're not alone in thinking that, they seem to have re-kindled a lot of people love of rock and/or music!
Their voices work so well together!
The engine driving the stereo juggernaut that is band maid!
Good content, do more please!
Onset seems to be next in the cross hairs from the feedback I've gotten so far!
Many thanks dude, glad you dug it! 🙏
If you're a guitarist you must give Lovebites Edge of the world you'll might enjoy the composition of this song and the classic style solo's.
Thanks for the suggestion- I'll give that a listen!
