  • To prepare your body for an Ice Mile, one of the toughest swims on the planet, it’s necessary to train steadily over several seasons of winter swimming. An ice mile is not to be taken lightly; it carries the same risks as other extreme sports and can be very dangerous if you are unprepared. Can a man from South Africa survive his attempt?

As a competitive ice swimmer and someone training for an ice mile, I just wanted to say I really appreciate the amount of health and safety you have included in this video. There's a lot of hype around cold water swimming going around and I've seen a lot of bad and dangerous videos circulating. While I would never recommend starting cold water swimming at 7 degrees, this video is very informative and well researched which is so important

Nope this was too dangerous even with some safety info. I have swimmed in ice water slush in Finland. You do not need skin exfoliant after that 😊 Local ice swimming club member told of a macho first timer, whose penis turned black from freezing. Euwww! Unsurprisingly that guy never showed up again. I heard a commando trainee died from dropping to cold water. Just the cold, not drowning. I know a guy who passed out face down in a lake after jumping in water after sauna. Alcohol consumption greatly increases risks from cold water exposure. Interestingly I have never seen warnings of not going to hot shower then sauna after cold water swimming. Which is common practise in Finland. We are acclimatized to sauna as a nation though. I saw a documentary of a local lady doing an ice mile in Spitsbergen in 1 C water and walking very very stiffly to sauna approximating an ice block for a good time even in the sauna. An ice mile is no joke.

You can’t beat ice swimming for feeling alive. Breaking the ice to get in the water was incredible this year. I definitely wouldn’t recommend going straight in, you need to work up it to. It is surprising how much difference each degree of water temperature makes. 5c is a world away from 7.5c and 9c is tropical compared.

@@gtn yes I love open water swimming and I just didn't want to stop as the temperature dropped. Well done James.🙌 I’m from north of Sweden, actually my city got Winter Swim championship every winter. The first year we made this event, it was-40 C outside and 0,5+ in the river. They swim 25 m and yes it is mandatory to wear a hat.
If I were you I had wear one neoprene swim cap.
During the pandemic, our swimming arenas were closed so than we started early with OW.

hmmm, I wonder if I would die in cold water swimming, I am a bad swimmer to start with so no real reason to try this. I mean I did get in the water in early spring when we were playing around, and it was bad, but I don't recall how cold the water was since I was trying not to die at the time. I'm in central Canada where we all feel that England in general has no clue what cold is. But then I suppose you could find a mound to stick me on and laugh at me. Now I'm getting old and weak, but when I worked I often walked to work in -40 weather, and yes my beared face did get covered in ice, but that was easily removed using one warm hand :) Anyway, keep up the great show. I was waiting for him to go into a sauna, though I suppose that would be even worse than a shower. I have done the roll in the snow then climb back into the hot tub, seemed simple enough.

Plenty of risk in hot water swimming too. An Olympic pool is supposed to be between 25 and 28. You’re swimming in water that’s at 7.2. Imagine swimming in water that’s between 45-48 aka a hot tub. The estimated water temperature that Fran Crippen died in was 30.
