  • Bob Graham Round record holder Billy Bland reveals what he really thinks of Catalonian trail & ultra running star Kilian Jornet potentially breaking his 35 year old time of 13hrs 53mins from 1982...
The Bob Graham Round is a now famous 65mile route of 42 Lake District summits within 24hours, first run as a birthday challenge by Keswick guest-house owner Bob Graham in 1932 when he was 42 years old, hence the same number of peaks.
Billy's record of 13hrs 53mins from 1982 is now 35 years old so I took the opportunity to interview this 70 year old fell running legend from Borrowdale, Cumbria, at the Inov8 Fell Running Evening at Kendal Mountain Festival 2017.
Kilian mentioned in several interviews during 2017 that he would like to run the Bob Graham Round and maybe have a go at the record if it went well, but he hasn't been back to the UK since the Salomon Glen Coe Skyline...I'll keep you posted.

Wow! That's great! Was he doing his Honisters on his bike? He does about 1000+ every year still! Amazing guy! You might like the whole Billy Bland playlist here! ua-cam.com/play/PLyZ16LRfpz0BJZAaTK9qvhr61CXAXPM9i.html

I must admit, I feel a bit sad about Billy's record being broken. I think there should be an amateur and a pro record. Completing the Bob Graham is about being a part of something more. The runners support each other, it comes from a background of completely amateur runners who escaped to the fells after working insanely hard weeks not professionally sponsored runners with all the latest gear and support crew. While Kilian is a phenomenal runner, he won't support the Bob Graham in the future or other runners, he's just ticking off records and I really find it a shame. Oh well :)

Hi Claire and thanks for your reply! Wow, 26.5 hours is really incredible! What an achievement :) I might get up the first peak and back in 26.5 hours... Let's say I wasn't built for long distance fell running! I'm a donkey, not a goat! Built for short distance speed or carrying load slowly for longer! Plus after years of rugby, my knees are in no state to go bouncing down the side of a slope!
But I have 2 good friends that run, one (also a ginger!) is an ultra-runner and the other is a fell runner and he managed to do the BG in 23.5 hours, just squeezing into the club! And for some weird reason, I love thinking about, following and watching ultra marathons! :D
Billy is just such a nice guy and so humble! :) It would be really nice if KJ would come back, that's what I've always loved watching in the ultra community is the spirit of collaboration. For example when Karl Meltzer broke the AT record, the previous record holder was out there and gave tips and even ran with him! You don't see that kind of spirit in most other sports!
Will you try the BG again to get under the 24 mark or you are happy to have finished it :) Take care and thanks for your really nice content! I only found your channel last week because of your reporting on the record and I've been binge watching!

you say all the latest gear, if this was cycling that may make sense but its literally a pare of shoes- they haven't changed that much

absolute nonsense, the advancement in sports science, nutrition and training principles, not to mention the benefits of being a paid professional athlete rather than a man working a 40 to 60 hour week....jeez what planet are you on ?

I see Finlay Wild had a crack at it last year and was only 7 minutes off Kilian's time. I reckon it won't be long before the record comes home again.

meh, records are all meant to be broken. fun to see the process. and the cultural context too.
