Unfortunately in Eastern Europe there is a large stray/feral dog population.

Mine too, Zaire......I think they knew they were going to be in better hands than the ones that dropped them off and deserted them. Creatures both Great & ESPECIALLY "Small" can detect a Loving Heart a mile away (although, the "Greatest" -- Humans -- seem to be the worst at detecting this Priceless Gift ! ). He has strong arms. Once they are in them, they relax. 'Arghh, this human is going to eat me, hang on a moment, this is so nice'. I lived in Serbia, people mostly have good hearts but they don't extend that to animals. So sad. Please educate the children. It's same all over E. and S. Europe, and Spain. Animals are not objects, they have feelings, they feel hunger, sadness, pain. They can also be your most loyal buddy. Don't throw them away to die when you've used them.

Same thing happened when my aunt rescued 4 puppies that had been dumped. One popped out from under the brush, followed her home, ate some kibble, then walked back where my aunt had been walking earlier. POOF, 3 more puppies popped out after getting the memo that food, a warm place to sleep, and shelter were nearby.

Some people are really cruel. I have one cat. I took it from a ricefield almost 3 years ago. It was kitten with probably just 2-3 weeks old. Very sad to see it. The people who thew it qas very cruel. But now that cat is happy with me. One thing, she is looks like understand that I rescued her, she is look like many times saying "thank you".

@the_bearded_schlub obviously, but taking away a few to let all of them take off into bushes is a risk not worth taking when the cost is them being slightly uncomfortable for the two min it takes to get them to the car. plus, getting all away makes it more likely the mom will come looking and not stash whatever ones you leave somewhere hidden
(of course, getting the camera guy to carry two and take pictures in the car instead.... lol)

@white No they can't, puppies need their mothers to teach them how to survive, but their mother was not there. They would have not survived for much longer on their own.
@white Without being taught to hunt by their mother, who is not present, how do you expect them to know what food is out in the wild?
Even wolves need to be taught how to hunt.
@white You might be surprised by how dogs learn with a little research into pack dynamics, puppy development etc.
The reason why you haven't is because we humans interupt that learning at between 4 - 8 weeks by giving them away to strangers. Just after they transition from milk to solid foods - making the puppies dependent on humans for food and thus never learning to hunt from their mother or pack mates.
Can they have a high prey drive?
Sure. Some breeds have it as a bred-for trait. I have a Kelpie X, he'd kill possums all night if he could get them.
Does this mean they can effectively hunt? No. Simply because they haven't been taught how to.
Can we train dogs to hunt? To a point - hence greyhounds, blood hounds etc being involved in blood sports but it does not and never will replace being taught to hunt by their mother or pack.
