This is why it's important to not take the puppies away from the mother before they're ready. Puppies who've been separated from the mother too early are often much more ill-behaved and have a higher chance of having separation anxiety and generally being harder to train.

I don't know if it's a retriever thing or not (I never saw another dog doing that). When my flat coat retriever freezes, I know I have to step in quickly, because she'd immediately make her point clear enough with the other dogs (she doesn't growl, she doesn't give any other warning, and she never bites, but when she jumps on the other dog, he's so impressed he falls on the ground, and the owners are mad at me).. x)

My family bought a 6 week old Lab puppy, but we had an adult Goldendoodle to show him the ropes and they were inseparable friends later. Pups just need mentorship, both human and canine.
