Will it START? 50yr Old Tractor Haul Out Machine SITTING for YEARS!

  • In this video, I see if I can get this old Massey Ferguson Cane Haul Out Tractor and trailer running. There is alot of history to this machine, owned by the current owner for over 50 years and being the first high lift tipper bin in his region making the unloading process much easier and safer between each run too and from the mill. Earmarked for restoration and being brought home from its current location, I go through the motions to see if I can get it running again after sitting for such a long time.

Hi Bruce, Bruce here, The problem I believe is the stop lever on the injector pump. I just overhauled one of those injector pumps, thanks to Lance (Bundy Bears Shed) at Queensland Tractor Spares for the video on how to do it. We tried and tried to start an old David Brown 990 but it did not happen. We decided to overhaul the injector pump and found the stop lever was jammed in the closed position. We primed everything once the pump was refitted and hit the starter and it started immediately. Took us by surprise , it started so easily.
If you have another go at it try working the stop lever back and forth to free it up. Not a lot to those injector pumps so they are easy to work on. Have a look at Bundy Bears Shed on YT and check out the CAV injector pump overhaul video.
    Cheers Mate.

Hi Bruce, I owned both a Chamberlain C670 and a C6100. The C670 was the 306 [70HP] A dog of an engine. The C6100 was fitted with the Perkins 354 100 HP. Used in everything conceivable. Not a bad motor.

Worked on some MWM Deutz engines that had a tiny filter screwed into the banjo bolt on the lift pump. Clogged very easily & caught out many people, including me until I spotted it!

On that fuel pump it has a strainer at the inlet of pump. Also it has a metering valve that gives it more or less fuel. When you pull the shutoff it closes that valve. When you push the shutoff back in the valve should go back to full throttle. That valve is known to stick if the engine has not run in years. I had the same problem with my backhoe. Tapping the fuel helped open it up. Since it is spring loaded. Thank you for another nice video.

Hi Bruce. Great video and I hope that you can get back and get the Massey to run. My guess that the whole unit was built by Barry McLean at Murwillimbah NSW. Barry was a real pioneer in the development of cane haulout units. He went on to build trailing and driven tipper bins as well as the huge elevator bins which could fill rail boxes one after the other down the tracks. Many other companies, Toft etc, would copy his designs and were used all over the canefields of NSW and Queensland. I even visited with a harvesting contractor in Belle Glade, Florida who was using the McLean toppers and elevators in conjunction with Austoft harvesters.

hey Bruce I have a IH434 with the same type of injector pump as that MF it had been sitting for years and would not pump like that MF I removed the top off the injector pump and it was only stuck with fuel varnish and I freed it up replaced the gasket and it started right up. Was a very simple job from memory the fuel stop was stuck in off position and the spring would not pull it back to the on position

Hey Bruce another gem, it’s great that you are getting these things going and shipping them off to someone else who will give it a proper restoration as this is all part of Queensland awesome history in the sugar cane industry. I can remember going out to a huge sugar cane farm many years ago and I was amazed that the farmer had a tractor or prime mover for every piece of machinery on his farm, I asked him why and he said it was because during the cutting season they were just too busy to find the time to fix anything , I was amazed at the outlay, a lot of money sitting in machinery. I hope that we get the chance to revisit the dumper once it’s going again, be awesome to see it unloading into a semi. As always, great save old mate

Hi Bruce, from the look and sounds of it, I think your problem with the CAV dpa pump is the fuel metering pin/arm is stuck in it's bore (common on these pumps when the engine has stood for a long time), pretty easy to sort out --- undo the 2 hexagon nuts on the rectangular top cover of the pump, lift the cover carefully (don't damage the gasket unless you've got a new one as the cover's hard to seal) as there's a spring tha goes from the throttle lever to the governor throttle plate that has to be unhooked (make a note of which hole (there's 3) the spring hooks into), lift off the cover and you'll see a sliding comb plate towards the upper edge with a slot at the front that engages with the fuel cut off/engine stop lever (I didn't notice but the lever was in the run position (lever forward to the rad) wasn't it?) and following it back you'll see a rectangular metal block with a pin that engages the comb and a long pin going into the body, lift this out (it may be stuck but can be persuaded gently to lift out), I generally clean the pin and bore with carb cleaner as it dissolves the gummy diesel well, carefully reassemble (getting the fuel cut-off lever eccentric pin to engage on the sliding comb plate is always tricky as if it doesn't engage in the plate properly it'll lock the sliding comb plate) the top cover by hooking on the spring (set the stop lever eccentric pin to the nearest position to the rectangular cover body), then whilst lowering the body down the studs wiggling the stop lever sligthly backwards & forwards you'll feel it click into the comb slot and it can then be lowered right the way down, reinstall and tighten the nuts (don't lose or forget the fibre washers under the nuts or it'll leak like a sieve), reprime/bleed the pump and it should be good, before you start the above, just give her one more try as the fuel doctor fluid might've got through to the pump and freed the fuel metering pin in any case. ---- hope this helps.

Or come on Bruce given your expertise I expected you to whip the injector pump off the motor and rebuild it on the back of the Ute. 😂😅😢😊. Up here in North Queensland they still use the same principle for haul out bins although they are 5 times larger than the old Massey. Yes the hi/low gear stick must be in neutral for the tractor to start. Nice video Mate.

I think we call that a “shifter” here as it’s adjustable, and I do carry a little one in my bag of tools, thanks for the comment

Would be great to see the chamberland up and running or perhaps even driving if it would be possible 🇬🇧🇮🇪.

Bruce mate , you really are the best mechanic/technician i have ever seen. You put me to shame mate , i have been out of the game for a while but you are jogging my memory and makes me want to it again. I just never got any gratitude as the service advisors took it all as they did it without respecting the person/mechanic who did the hard work , plus they got more money for sitting behind a desk dribbling there crap , really sucked as they just sit there and push a few buttons on the computer and say that did it without respecting the mechanic. Clients only see there side not the hard work the mechanics have to do to fix everything. Sorry just is wrong and pisses me off and it still happens now days, something has to be changed to put service advisers in there place and have the mechanic getting more money than a fn service advisor.
