I loved this interview! Best on this channel to date 👍 Aaron is such a humble and likable guy, a source for inspiration and knowledge when it comes to traveling and approaching people. Dave, you should bring Aaron to Scandinavia and do some TET.
Same here. I had a KTM 520 exc back in 2002 and sold it after 6 months because I couldn't cope with the high maintenance intervals. Obviously they've come a long way since then but I'd love to know just how far.
@@Gamesplaytoday I know it's a different bike(600 mile changes), but John T Young on here gets his oil analysed, and goes huge distances over what Honda recommend for his CRF450L...companies just covering their backsides...3000 on the road sounds about right, it is a competition machine, after all?
I came across Aaron in Dawson City YT just after I finished riding my 690 in Africa and Europe. He amazed me on a few fronts! The first was his 500. He proved it was quite durable for long distance riding. I quickly switched to one myself and love it! Another was he didn’t have a license plate and hadn’t had one through many countries!
I followed Aaron on the forums. He was the number one reason I chose to get a 500exc for myself. I think of your story almost every time I ride it, especially on long rides. It truly gives me more confidence in the bike - along with good maintenance of course.
Brilliant interview with Aaron! Thanks for presenting this one. It's amazing how far he traveled on the 500 EXC-F. Makes me respect my 350 EXC-F even more! Ride safe Dave!
Just a quick comment, half way through - Aaron has a great smile. Great interview Dave, you have a very relaxed style and know how to keep the conversation going. Cheers
Absolutely brilliant interview. What a great bloke. I love it that he did it on such a limited budget. Great list of questions too. I have a 500exc and as much as I love it, there’s no way I’d want to ride that bastard for anything like that distance! It’s an almighty achievement. A tough bloke on a tough bike.
Just passed my bike license a month ago, planning a RTW trip with my new T7 starting on June 2022 if all goes to plan. Will film the damn thing as good as I can and hope to not die ! This interview, like so many content from MAD Tv has been insipational ! Thanks a ton!
What lovely chaps. Congrats to Aaron for an epic ride RTW on an enduro monster no less. Hope he writes a book - I'll definitely buy it. Love his indepth knowledge and humour.
Really enjoyed the interview with Aaron, crazy amount of kilos! I created a poster of the most iconic off-road KTMs of the last 50 years (1973-2023), and the KTM500EXC-F was one of the 12 pencil sketches that i did for the poster. In the inscription below the 500EXC-F i made reference to Aaron and his round the world trip

If you are going for the TET, I have a Xt660z Tenere gravel /offroad setup, and a DRZ400S, if you would like to start your TET in Norway and ride south. Have also soft luggage systems on both, and even a 4Bikers tent if you need. A great tent for riding up north here. Setup in about 30-60 sec. :) So you are welcome to borrow a bike from me :) Will use one of these bikes when me and a friend will ride from Norway to New Zealand when Covid calms down.

I would love to know how often Aron did oil changes? Re wind protection for the 701, I have twice used the small KTM screen for the 690 ER for long trips across the USA (including the extended NY to Portland TAT) but mounted about 4 inches higher than normal and found it amazingly effective and I am 6'2". No buffeting but totally takes the pressure off the chest even at 80 -90 mph.My jacket was always clean and bug free right out to the shoulders which proves the point that sometimes a small screen is actually more effective than a rally type screen if it is placed in the right place.
curious about the oil changes aswel. Im working on setting up for a trip like this and the thought of an oil change every 1000 miles sounds exhausting. making sure you have quality oil in remote parts of the world isn't the easiest thing to keep on board.
Hey Dave, all the good questions were there but - unless I missed this part twice while (re)wathing the interview - what was the service on the 500EXC? I imagine every 500/1000km changind the oil, filters, valve adjusting, etc, how did Aaron manage that part? The big EXC is perhaps the best candidate for the unicorn, just a bigger tank, stronger subframe and bigger service intervals and voila! So it would have been nice to hear how was Aaron coping with one of the most disapointing shortage of this bike = service intervals. Cheers
Congratulations! Huge accomplishment and on a 500! Haha some good advice, tips, tricks in this. Packing is always difficult I feel like, even for a weekend trip. I moved from a similar wolfman “loop” no rack, soft bag to soft panniers to have a little more space and like having the racks as some more “protection”. I actually blew out the wolfman bag laying the bike down. My tool side, the one downside to trying to keep all your weight low. Everything has its designated place now and packed accordingly. Glad you enjoyed North America!
Sounds like an amazing adventure. I recently moved to the Portland area, definitely a pretty part of the world. Hopefully I will get to do part of the trip Aaron was able to do.
Hey Dave, great talk with Aaron. If you make it up to the Pacific Northwest I'd recommend the Idaho BDR. Did it last year and it was a great ride, probably the best of the BDR's I've done and only a few hours from Bend Oregon where Giant Loop is based.
Great talk. Thank you! I just wonder about that bike pick in regards to oil change intervals. Did Aaron really changed his oil every 2-2,5k km? I understand this could become almost like chain lubricating after some time, but still for such a trip seems like a job to do almost once a week... How do you deal with that when going through Mongolia or Russia? Do you carry the oil and filters with you? Or do you buy different oils on gasoline stations? How does it work? Thanks!
Hopefully Aaron will read this and get back to you. If not go to the top of this page, just under the video and there are links in the description that should provide the answers you seek.
I did. A few times it may have been 3k. Very quick and easy to do on this bike and gave me a chance to give it a quick once over to check for any loose or missing bolts. I often did it by my tent or stop at a shop mid-day.
Really great interview!! Maybe because my English is not the best and I missed it. Did he do the whole ride with one engine? Normally the engine oil needs to be changed every 15 hours. How often has he changed the oil?
Could of had the whole KTM support team behind with a fresh engine here and there, the occasional service air drop helicopted in. Who knows. One things for sure, ktm will be selling this unicorn bike like hot cakes 😂. I maybe wrong but anything is possible.
Great interview. He seemed to fly/ferry from Mongolia to Western Australia. Any reason he didn't bike it in China & SE Asia. I think he said he'd been to Laos, so maybe he'd done a lot of SE Asia before??

Kudos to Aaron for RTW in a smaller not so comfortable bike
Yep I agree.
I’m allergic to Merino ! Used to get SERIOUS lower leg itch, like for days after riding, turns out it was my Sealskinz !
Crazy he had been through all those ‘dangerous’ countries and his bike gets stolen in OZ!
Not surprising considering the criminality in Alice Springs in recent years. It is out of control.
There are some top notch people in Oregon who can take you around if you need some inspiration on what to do and where to go off road
Thank you for the kind offer
Gents … I have a CRF450XR … I’m curious about your rally Pegs . Do you have a link for them ?

@Aaron Steinmann Did you encounter dangers off-road? Like animals, eg. aggressive Sheep dogs 🐕 🚨
I did. Big sheep dog in the country of Georgia that put a hole in my riding pants with a fang.
@@aarons1351 Thanks for answering. Very scary. Happy only the pants suffered.
