  • Have you ever wondered if other people are getting paid to take care of a family member and how you can do it too? It's one of the most common questions that I hear from family caregivers. I'm not quite sure why getting paid to care for a family member has been such a secret. Especially when it's become a known phenomena that adults are leaving the workforce to take care of their aging parents and it's taking a hit on their pocketbooks, big time! So, it's my goal to show you how to get paid by the state for taking care of someone, especially your aging parent, and to also answer the question "will the VA pay me to take care of my parent?". Oh, yes, and there are also other methods to getting paid to care for elderly parents, and I'll cover those in this video too.
    You may have taken on the responsibility of caregiving without the thought of ever getting paid to take care of your parents. That's common and admirable! And bless those of you who make this world go around with all that you do! But wouldn't getting paid to care for a loved one make it a tiny bit easier? Maybe a lot easier? There's nothing to feel bad about. Getting paid as a family caregiver just might be the one thing that allows you to keep doing it! To keep providing that all-needed care and attention to your parent. So in this video, I'll answer your question: "can I get paid to care for my mother?", since it's one of the most common question that I hear!

    What is sad is when you already know how but family thinks you should do it for free while they sit on money and resources that are already there that they claim to not want to use until much later days, when our loved one is already 81. There's no survivorship so if they die anytime soon (God forbid), then that caregiver will have suffered hard and long without compensation. The other family members that continued on with their lives just continue on without injury.

    I get this question so much from the clients I coach. I hope the options for paying family caregivers expands. If you aren't on Medicaid or are a veteran, it's so tough in many states.

    You should do a video on a family caregiver(s) through a Caregiver Agreement to care for a parent who pays them for the care. This is especially helpful in spending down assets and is permissible on the 5 year look back.

    I spent 3 months with my mother as my stepdad was in a nursing home. His son's want to be reimbursed for the air fair and nights at the Hilton hotel. They cleaned out the house of anything of value as I took Mom to see her husband in a nursing home. Two weeks for one brother and 7 days for the two other brothers. They're demanding 17,000. For their expenses seeing their dad when he was still alive. Never came back to help me with the death certificate of their Dad. To get SS and pension for my mother. She only has 100,000. To her name after I sold her house and car. It took me 3 months to get that certificate of death without any of their help. Everything was left to My mother. I've put 7,000. Of my own money for her care in a memory center for the last 2 months and 3 months of around the clock care for her. I'm thinking I need an attorney.

    Wow , as a Kenyan , it's hard for me to relate. people here are expected to take care of their aging parents for free and it's an honor for most

    • @jenniferfrazierlpc7171
      @jenniferfrazierlpc7171 6 місяців тому +5

      But do you all have any community support? Over here, our neighbors stick to themselves sometimes. There’s a lot of family discord, so no support there. And there are tons of single parents. So although, ideally, it would be an honor, it’s also like another full-time job with high demand and expectations.

    • @NdungeDiaries
      @NdungeDiaries 6 місяців тому

      Yes , there is community support, especially in the rural areas where neighbors are like family. After giving it a thought based on your info, i totally get your point. Things in Africa are different and in fact, those people who take care of their parents literally as opposed to paying for them to be cared for, are usually, mostly jobless now that I think about it. and most of those parents have homes or shambas (small household farms) that they own. So in the end they benefit by having free housing and food.Thanks for the reply.@@jenniferfrazierlpc7171

      If they work, best believe they will gladly pay someone to do it out of pocket . About having no family, it's a rare occurance but extended family MIGHT help as well. I was just pointing out what happens here, you can ask other Kenyans if you think i don't know what am saying.

    For perspective, do mothers get paid for caring for a baby or young children or all children of any age? No, they don't; they get supported by a spouse or welfare or they work and pay others to care for their offspring, depleting their income to where sometimes it makes no sense to work. Time away from working gets them less Social Security income when they get old. Now, that same mother/women (typically) is stuck also caring for elderly parents, being forced to quit working and, again, getting less Social Security in their old age. Women in these circumstances need enhanced Social Security to be on par with men in our society.

      @Erik Mendez Yes, there are fewer resources when your mom is so young. Sorry it's been so stressful for you. Maybe try the American Cancer Association website, or your local caregiver resource center. If she is disabled and unemployed, try applying for medicaid, then maybe you can get In-home supportive services. But this is all too much for a 19 y/o son to have to manage. Family?

      You're a very good son. Please reach out to social services in your county and call and ask them if they can provide any help for your mother. You should also consider researching a "caregiver support group for (enter the name of your city and county ) Please reach out to them as they can provide helpful tips on how to take care of YOU as well as offer suggestions for agencies to help your mom. You can reach out to the local catholic church for help as well. I'm wishing you the best of luck. I'm a caregiver for my daughter with disabilities in Georgia. The agency who pay me as caregiver said that I cannot have a second job. They require me to take care of my daughter at least 5 hours, obviously I do more than that; but if I want to have a second job, like a one part time or any other from home, I'm not allowed to do it and I don't know why. The payment I received as caregiver is not sustainable to pay a health insure or to cover other home expenses. It's something else that I don't know about to have a second income? I appreciate your help. Thank you!

      IF were the government pay 5,000 to 7,000 per month nursing home for each person or pay you 2,000 a month. Seems pretty easy to pick answer. Start keeping a log and get a time clock or write it in. Start doing it like a job as far as keeping time so can then prove and charge against it when get approved.

      2000 is not enough to live on. it cost 5000-7000 to live here a month. In Cali if you are approved the max monthly hours of 283 at an hourly rate of 17 with over time and everything you are looking in receiving about 5850 a month. This would be more doable unlike 2000 a month

    Hi, I have a question I’d really appreciate your feedback…
    I recently started to take care of my grandma, she’s 84 diagnosed with dementia. She is physically able to do many tasks, but mentally she cannot take care of herself. She doesn’t remember how to cook, she will wear the same clothes/ not shower for months. She collects trash from outdoors and puts it under her bed etc. she does many unsanitary things. However, she is able to speak with others very politely and she completely denies that she needs any help, and she doesn’t remember that I am the one there to help her. If an IHSS worker were to ask her if she needed in home support services she would say no… but her doctors and her whole family would say otherwise. Have you heard of a situation like this? Where the recipient denies needing the assistance?
    Thank you

      Not all the options I spoke about in the video will apply to you and your grandson. But if he is receiving medicaid in your state, then he should be eligible for in-home supportive services (might be called something else in your state), and your state might allow you to be the paid caregiver. But every state has their own rules about this. But look into it. Good luck!

    What's the difference between a Nursing Home vs Assisted Living?

    • @SofiaAmirpoor
      @SofiaAmirpoor  2 роки тому +2

      @Sylvia Assisted Living is more like a home environment where your parent would have their own little apartment and go down for communal meals and activities. Usually for higher functioning seniors. Assisted Living is 99% of the time private pay....insurance does not pay. Nursing homes are more like a hospital environment with doctors and nurses providing care. Medi-care or private insurance will pay for nursing home for a short period if there is a skilled need such as physical therapy, wound care etc. If your parent needs long term nursing home care, the only insurance that will pay is medicaid. I hope that helps!

    Can I take Family leave and IHSS at the same time? to take care of my Mom. I’m in California.

    • @SofiaAmirpoor
      @SofiaAmirpoor  2 роки тому +1

      @Zhorell Ski FMLA only protects your job and does not provide pay, so yes, I think you can also get paid via IHSS at the same time. Just know that IHSS takes months and months to get! But look into this.....if you live in California (and some other states too), and they take SDI (State Disability) out of your paycheck, then you may be eligible for paid family leave through the state's EDD. If you would qualify to be paid through the state for your own disability, then you should also qualify to be paid through the EDD for taking care of a family member temporarily. Good luck to you! And let me know if you have any luck...

      Hi, try this website if your mom is on Medicaid. Your local AAA can give you more resources in your area. This site for Georgia has a link for AAA. Good luck!! aging.georgia.gov/programs-and-services/home-community-based-services/home-services

    Do the VA benefit opportunities extend to spouses of former veterans?

    • @SofiaAmirpoor
      @SofiaAmirpoor  Місяць тому

      @barbo1106 Hi there! For the Aid and Attendance Program, the benefit is available for a surviving spouse of a veteran as long as the veteran would have met all the service criteria and as long as they were married at the time the veteran passed away. As for other VA benefits, I am not sure. But you can call the VA helpline at 800-827-1000 and they will answer that question for you. Good luck!!

    I live in California and I’m looking into taking care of my dad, he needs the help and I don’t have a job right now, but I’m not sure if they let you have another job and don’t know how much they pay or from what I’ve heard it’s not enough

      @@Crazyknives I haven't been able to do it, but when I went to apply the social worker said that they don't give too many hours, it would depend on how much help your parent needs, so don't exactly know, you would have to see according to your case.

    A person should not be paid to take care of a parent you do it out of love what is so hard to understand about that l❤ve 😢truth

      If you cannot work outside of the home because you need to be home 24/7 to care for the parent, this makes sense. Of course you do it out of love but bills need to be paid also.

    Hi sofia!
    I have been following you for a long time.
    I have a question that I am an international student in UK and my Grandmother has the EEA settlement in Uk.
    Can I become the carer of my grandmother to switch my visa?
    Is it possible?
