I can’t imagine making my child think that choosing death over telling me something is the better choice. I can never imagine making anyone feel like this ☹️
Some parents react so badly over the littlest things and makes the child close that parent off. At some point kids can predict how they will react so why bother telling them certain things.
This is just a fragment of an episode but it´s clear how this family is keeping a happy life fascade with lies and secrets.

@@me-oh9du Heavily religious people will criticize people based on their religious morals. But, when it comes to them breaking those rules, they end up justifying it. That is how humans do things.
I think religion has more downsides than good. Religion isn't the thing that gives people morals, and it slows down progression, (and you can see this in things like creation which stops people from actually researching scientific reasons as to why things happen, and I think the Taliban believed at least at some point that unknown or foreign things, like TV, was evil, but I could be wrong). The one thing that religion has going for it is that it gives people a sense of closure when other people die, which may have some funny moral implications to it, however.

In the UK, you don't need parental consent from the age of 16 and you can keep your medical info private from them just like with anyone else. I guess it's a few years older in the US then? I think a 17 year old is mature enough to have confidentiality and consent

This seems insane to me, a 17 year old is about to go off to college and in America likely take on thousands of dollars in debt and they're allowed to do that but not handle their own medical stuff? Where I live children this old would have been making their own medical decisions for years, and parents aren't entitled to anything they want to keep private. Like kids are people to it's wild that this 17 year old would be controlled like an object her parents own
And you've nailed the American problem on health care. Bear in mind that those decisions are often directed by the parents because of the lack of nationalized healthcare meaning the decision is based on cost and insurance coverage before the child's benefit. Secondly, we have the heavy hand of Americanized Christianity purity culture... so yeah, happy fun times

Allow themselves to die hiding the truth, or admit the truth and probably get ostracized by the family and become a homeless teenager, possibly leading to the same result. And legal medical rules require that the parents that would punish the child this way be told regardless of circumstance.

I would never be the kind of parent that a child cannot trust. That's just so wrong. Being supportive is more than providing with money and encouraging the best, it's also to understanding and helping when something bad happens. Not to play who's fault is.
And I think in a way I did understand the girl because the mother's first reaction was that her daughter had committed "murder" by aborting.
No one parent goes about "building" distrust in their kids. We don't have the manuals for this parenting thing and with all the resources we have/don't have , it's still an uncertain field. We grow up learning, from so many pple and situations around us, to be parents... If you're not a psy, U can never tell how your "best actions" will affect your kids. So its better to reserve judgementof other parents. The fictional parents here, probably communicated sometime, quiet unconscisly, that they abhorred abortion. Pretty valid stance IMO, we have the right to feel differently about this. The girl knew her parents would feel strongly about this. It wasn't a choice to save her life. She was afraid to disappoint them. I see no vilians here. Just life - that places unfortunate circumstances our way. If they knew, it could teach them apart - or not... Whichever way, it's just life. No judgement

We had to leave our 14 year old son because the Dr's wanted to ask him some questions. Didn't think much of it at the time, he's the patient needing help and Dr's need to know what's happened to treat him properly.

In my country, teens are definitely allowed to make their own medical decisions and they have a right to doctor-patient confidentiality. It is not the age that determines it, but whether the teen is considered to be capable of discernment. In practice, teens are typically allowed to make their own decision starting at some point between 12 and 16 years of age. This is particularly important in cases of pregnancy, but also when teens with cancer decide that they want to stop treatment. Also, of course, for the teenage kids of anti-vax parents.
I'm very glad we have this system.
Age of medical consent is 14 in Québec, Canada. If a teen has to be hospitalized for more then a day, the only thing the hospital is legally obligated to do is inform the parents that the teen is at the hospital, so they don't declare him missing to the police or something like that.
I believe it's 16 in the rest of Canada.

The standard is the child must be able to understand the decision and its consequences Typically 13 is considered the lower limit but legally younger children can consent if they understand and older teens may not be able to if they do not.
Term in Australia is "Mature Minor" and is ultimately a decision that IF it is required to be made (ie parent and patient aren't in agreement) the medical team determine if the patient is mature enough to make their own treatment decisions or not.
In my country you're medically considered an adult at 16 (make your own decisions, confidentiality etc)... Ironically enough, except for an abortion. Then you have to be 18 or have parental consent
Where I live you can see your own medical history from 16, you can receive prescriptions without your parents even knowing. You can take birth control without your parents knowing (even if you're under 16) and as a minor, birth control is free, abortion is free and visiting a nurse or doctor is free. And you can do all these things without your parents consent. If you get an abortion they might advise you to tell your parents but you don't have to, you might need someone to come and pick you up if you get the abortion done at the clinic but it doesn't have to be your parents. Teen pregnancies happen, there are people who doesn't notice the pregnancy, or that wants to keep the baby, but you always have the option of getting an abortion (unless the pregnancy has been going on for over 19-21 weeks or so). Seeing these things makes me so grateful to live where I live.

It is why you can't make decision of polotical voting until 18 and can't buy alchohol yourself until you are 20(in some countries). Same with medical treatment, as a minor can't be trusted with making a medical decision themself not knowing a lot of the world or body and themself yet, hitting puperty and everything.
Now she is 17, so it debatable if you think she can make decision of her own by then or not.
Maybe because she is still not an emergency (?) I mean maybe when she is in danger and needs immediate assistance they would not ask her parents consent first because they don't have the time. In this case they have time, she is conscious and her parents are also there.
Another possible reason is money. I'm not from America but I think medical bills are paid by the parents and if they found out that their daughter was treated without their consent, they could sue the hospital for bodily harm/personal injury (I don't know the right term for this).
PC Response: its the hospital and they have protocols to follow they can't do anything to a child without a guardians consent the reason why i say guardian and not parents is because in some cases a child may not have a parent and may live with their uncle aunt god mother god father or be in foster care and i don't think foster parents count as that persons ACTUAL parents so the next best term would be guardians

Medical consent and people's kids are two of the most sensitive topics in society, throw in religion and things get real complicated real fast. Is 18 or 21 or 16 the magic number when kids get their autonomy over medical decisions? I have no idea and I doubt there is a perfect number but it's what we work with in an imperfect world. The line between an ethical and unethical situation where a parent might opt to risk their child's life is very blurry but I for one don't feel comfortable giving anyone but the parent unrestricted authority on the subject.

You can't be forced to donate a kidney, can't be forced to donate blood, and can't be forced to be a human incubator. Even if it means someone or something else will die because of it.

Really is a rock and a hard place. On one hand you've got a legal obligation to tell the parents because she's still classed as a minor, on the other you've got the right of doctor-patient confidentiality. Which one trumps which?
I would say confidentiality - otherwise they could find all sorts of pretexts to say confidentiality does not apply. It would have to be this way in order to protect confidentiality for everyone. A right does not mean anything if there are dozens of reasons for which it does not apply, or if you can invent a reason on the spur of the moment.

To answer your question: it depends.
Not from the U.S nor practicing there, but where I am from it is a case by case basis determined by diagnosis and age.
Minors are considered sexually independent from 14 years old and onwards, so issues related to that are not just in their whole prerogative but also to be kept as discreet as they wish, even from their parents as he or she (usually a she for obvious reasons) has no need for their consent in that case.
In the U.S, don't know if there's a state in which that's different, but as far as I know once they're teenagers they DO have a right to medical privacy from their parents and Manning more or less followed procedure by only telling one of them once the patient acquiesced because surgical procedures do require parental informed consent. I'd assume it's not universal and the laws in say... Illinois are not the same as in Texas or Florida, where I'd assume parents have more legal power over their children's medical history and treatment.
In topics OUTSIDE of gynecological ones there normally isn't much controversy about a parent's right to know, but as a general rule: if it's not directly relevant to the case, like say the kid twisted his ankle because he was sneaking around to see a girl his parents don't like, then it's considered improper to divulge that agains the patient's wishes. If it is relevant, like say in cases of abuse or other criminal acts performed by or onto the minor, then you should tell the parents as they're the legal guardians, not just for medical stuff but in general.
If someone starts of making negativ comments about abortions, remember that there could be someone reading it who made this decision or is going to make it for WHATEVER reason, who feels miserable, sad ect. You never know a person’s story so keep your thoughts to yourself.
This is even more important post Roe vs Wade. No person ever thinks lightly about having an abortion, for all the reasons that pro-life people say (against God, killing a child etc), they're all in their head too. It's not the same as a decision to get married, move out, etc, a baby will change your life forever, especially if they have severe disabilities, it will seriously endanger the life of the mother or they are not able to financially support themselves.

I'm Canadian and when I was 16 I had a family doctor visit for something that my parent's never knew about (and I presume still don't over a decade later). I guess we have a bit of leeway when it comes to disclosing personal medical info involving minors. Too bad for this girl, seeing how deathly afraid she is about her parents finding out.
I think it's 18 in the states. I live in QC and I had my medical decisions are mine since 14. Heck go vaccinated at 16 behind my parents back for HPV.

@@zinzolin14 Yeah in Ontario it’s a young as 12 that you can start making medical decisions on your own. But if you want to have privacy for it you have to be 14.
An example of this would be if at age 12 you asked if you can get a vaccine shot or something, if you have a parent’s or guardian’s signature or note you can. (This is actually something you can get around with, it doesn’t have to be your parent, it just has to be an adult you trust) However at age 14, you can request it on your own without an adult approval.
@@zinzolin14 modern medical recommendations say that even up into your early 20s, it's still a good idea to get the HPV vaxx since it will still provide some immunity coverage. The reason they try to get it to preteens/young teens is because they want you to have it preferably BEFORE you become sexually active as that's when it's ability to protect you is the strongest.
It absolutely DISGUSTS me that her Human Right to privacy is not honored. I know the law disagrees with me, but her parents have NO RIGHT to know. Seriously, my parents stopped coming in the doctor's office without being specifically asked when I was still in the single digits. I think they should have been asked to wait outside. SHE is the patient, and minor or not, SHE lives (or dies) with the decision, and it should be hers.

Why does a 17 year old needs their parents consent? Where I’m from kids from 12 years old need to consent as well as the parents. From 16 years old the adolescent is medically fully aloud to make all the calls. Parents aren’t aloud to be told what’s going on without explicit consent from the patient. Unless the patient can’t make those calls, like if there in a coma or something.
That’s pretty much the same as where I’m from. I simply cannot fathom the idea of not having any real say over your body or health at that age. I mean, at 18 you’re legally an adult, are you just expected to go from having absolutely no say at 17 to suddenly having to call all the shots at 18? It seems a bit extreme.

Well, 13 is extremely young and yes, they cannot make those decisions themselves, because their brains simple hasn't matured enough. It's that simple. It is too young. It may be the law in your country, but the biology says what it says. Cannot trump that. 💁♀️

@@desteny1393 I'm Welsh, and I was able to sue my doctor because he made a mistake in my operation (it was exploratory surgery on my ovary when I was 17, but he accidentally damaged the tubes and left me infertile). It is really rare though, you have to sign all sorts of wavers that say please don't sue us, with the exchange being most medical procedures are free on the NHS. They were really reasonable, but it took months and months. I imagine if you have to pay for your treatment and they mess up or otherwise don't follow the rules, you're more likely to take legal action

Growing up my parents repeatedly made a point of letting us know that no matter what happened, we could always come to them for help.
A true parent accepts anything their child do what doesn't harm them and supports them in pregnancy getting over addictions etc
Not sure what’s the law for them but where I am, since she 17 years old, the doctor don’t need to tell the parents of the patient doesn’t want to. I love how medical shows doesn’t show what’s the real life.

A: Laws are different. If it's a medical and not a psychological issue doctors are required to tell the patients in my country too. B: they are medical DRAMAs...of course they don't show real life. If you want realism watch a documentary instead.
Laws about this issue are different from country to country and state to state. It really sucks in some places.

not a medical person but why can she easily buy the mifepristone but the follow up pill requires a doctors prescription? in the first place mifepristone should also require a prescription because it can only harm them if they buy it and not get the follow up pill. educate me if I'm wrong.

Dr Manning is very irritating. So self righteous. She really doesn't show her peers any respect. Her attitude is always her decisions are above everyone else's. In the end she always has to do what the other doctors say because there are complications. I hate that holier than thou attitude. She maybe morally right but doesn't consider the fact that her peers may be ethically and legally right and hence uncomfortable.

I went through the same situation but I’m 19 and my dad beat me up and is currently not talking to me. Ive brought shame to my family and myself. I didn’t want to abort my baby and it was really painful but I had to because I couldn’t tell my parents. My father would harm me and disown me. But since he did it anyway after finding out I regret it but at the same time I won’t be safe nor the baby. It’s a hard choice one I still think about everyday.

So lets take all the information in we have now. The mother is obviously pro life. The daughter knows her parents better than the doctors but she is also a teenager of around 17 years of age based on things she said about high school. The mother didn't want the step father to know because it is likely he will have a more severe reaction than she will. So if both parents know, what do you think could happen next based on all this information? Do you think it is likely that the daughter won't face some severe consequence like being kicked out of the house? Maybe suffer some physical or mental abuse at home more severe than she already has suffered to this point? Both possibilities seem likely so would it therefore be 'right' to have told the parents? In my view, this is why Dr Choi is wrong. He wasn't considering what could happen next after telling them and just assuming, it would appear, that the parents would just accept what is and move on.
@@cloudstone123 he was also worried about legal reprecautions, probably. sure they managed to hide it up until surgery came into question, but there was a complication after the drug they gave her. if the girl had died or had a serious complication from the drug and the parents sued the clinic for it, the secrecy would play against the med team
@@zilesis1 I'm not convinced of that. At the end when the mother asked if only she had to give consent, he voiced an objection over the father not being told. The legal requirement would be met with one parent giving consent, it wouldn't require both.
I completely disagree as a woman who was once that age I’m 100% on dr Manning’s side I’m sorry but there is such thing as patient confidentiality even with minors towards their family members like someone who has a few days left to live and ask the doctors not to tell others it’s pretty much the same situation sorry or it’s like outing a patient about their sexuality to their family without the patients consent you would consider that inappropriate right? I live in a country with a vast majority being religious (Christian) and I really don't think that religion makes people any better or worse. The problem is, when someone claims to be a devout Christian, you expect them to live following the examples of Christ and the values he preached. Otherwise the hypocrisy is very stark and sickening.
They're like "abortion is murder I don't care if the mother was raped or will risk her life in delivery" but "drug addicts deserve to be murdered in their sleep without due process of concrete proof".
