- Scratch built 45cc V8 with Megasquirt MS2 fuel injection.made in the shed with an old manual Bridgeport mill and a 95 year old lathe. Single fuel injector made from Punto injector internals. Pressurised oil system, drilled crank, alloy block, cast iron wet liners, vernier cam pulleys, Walbro fuel pump, tungsten alloy flywheel, bead blasted and anodised finish, throttle pos sensor on butterfly shaft, 24tooth trigger wheel for megasquirt.
I'm afraid it will be a couple of years yet till I test the hp. I'm doing a 1/3rd scale V10 at the moment. When that's done I'm going to make a small dyno and get both engines tested. v10 is a bit more complicated than this. Variable valve timing and built in supercharger.......cheers.
wha wha? VVT and forced induction? /drools. Are you going for a centrifugal or roots/twin scroll? I am curious though what you (probably) have calculated the efficiency to be, especially due the the smaller mass of moving parts, and the smaller surface area of friction surfaces, compared to conventionally sized motors? You obviously arent doing this just because you are bored. Ha!
saw this video when you posted it a year ago, and very interested that you are continuing development.
Just seen the V10 build it looks fab, any hope of a vid anytime soon?
Hi, the V10 won't be finished for at least another 12 months, but I am considering doing a little video of the build up so far. I want to do another V8 video too, just to answer the skeptics who think it's a fake!
Cheers
nallen100 You are incorrect. It runs fine on throttle position and rpm, which are all that is required to create the fuelling map.
I have run this on full sized engines too.
The IAT and O2 sensor then just fine tune the fuelling map.
I just set the iat to 30c to get it to run. The engine is a bit small for a full sized o2 sensor.Check out KEITH5700 photobucket later today, I have just taken pics of the tps, will upload later.
Then Megasquirt has a choice of two ways to create the main fuelling map. Either manifold pressure and rpm, or throttle position and rpm. If you create the map using pressure and rpm and then overlay throttle position afterwards, using the data logger function you can see that the lines are virtually identical.
If you have used afternarket ecus then you must surely know all this?
I have used the Holley Commander and Emerald M3dk too, and they can both run with TPS and rpm.
I stand by what I said about the O2 sensor. The narrowband sensors are virtually useless on aftermarket ECU setups. All my full sized engines ran fine without. Wideband sensors are very useful though, but I have only used them for setting up, and not for normal running.
My offer is open to any sceptic to come and see the engine running. I am in Derby, in the UK.
Absolutely amazing!! Such a beautiful work of mechanical art you've created here and it sounds as good as it looks!
Thank you for continued comments.
For some reason I seem to have lost the facility to reply to individual comments, for the last month at least. I'm cracking on with the V10 at the moment.
Software is Tuner Studio by the way. It comes with the Megasquirt.
megasquirt for the win!
Oh man please link the build log for the V10 I'm still halfway through your buildlog for this motor and as a young machinist I'm quite enamored with it and wish i had the time and skill to build my own

This is probably the coolest thing that anyone has ever made with a Bridgeport Mill. Well done!
I love it but I'd like to hear it unmuffled .

@@Keith5700 oh man build some scale
glass packs!
absolutley mental!
whoever built this obviously SERIOUSLY knows what he is doing.
Awesome machining work, having spent most of my life with engines at an OEM, I certainly appreciate your work.
I like how it runs 10x smoother than any of the carbureted model V8 engines with fixed ignition.
Now build a miniature engine dyno and tune it under load!
This is bloody awesome! But I'm a bit sad that you didn't let us hear the proper sound, just for a few seconds even :P
OHMYFREAKINGGOD.
For those that don't know... this is a HAND MADE engine... with manual machine tools... no computer controlled anything. Just RAW skill and perseverance.
This effort is unimaginable to me, and that's only because I know something about it.
My eyes are wet watching this...
This is literally the best thing I've seen in my life!
Love that your intakes look so much like the tuned port injection GM put on camaros and corvettes in the 80s and 90s
It even sounds great, would be amazing to see in an RC vehicle
This is the best miniature V8 I've seen yet - BY FAR!
BRAVO!
still it sounds powerful!
Wow, totally amazing!
The engine is smaller than the coil pack or ECM!
I can only dream about having time to make something like this. Thanks for sharing it. I am blown away!
this is absolutely amazing, and despite being so small it sounds great too. Does it it vibrate or is it fairly well balanced?
This is absolutely spectacular. I'd love to hear this thing roar without the mufflers on it.
Work of art, man. Work of art.
Imagine this in a remote controlled car! :D
it is.
@@isailwind3471 yea
Conley engines use spark ignition same as this. They use distributor though, whereas this uses the Megasquirt to control all the ignition system. Cheers.
Hello Keith!
As I read the comments I am amazed at some of them. It's this, it's that, it's not real. holy cow.
One comment I saw was that Gary Conley cant get one to run on injection but Keith can, must be fake. Well I have met Gary Conley and I have to believe that if Gary wanted his running on injection they would be. He is a very sharp guy with enough smarts. For what ever reason he decided not to do it, probably the cost and time to modify off the shelf parts. That doesn't mean that somebody else "cant". Keith did, get over it.
Another comment I saw was that it had to be glow fuel. Makes no sense. The small V8 engines run just as good on gasoline as glow fuel. Yes you have to make tiny spark plugs, big deal.
The fact of the matter is that this engine is real and is running as stated. Suck it up and get over it. If you still don't believe it put your game controller down and go to a model engineering show. The show in michigan hosts an entire hockey rink full of them for you to see. Seeing them in person might even prompt you get out in the garage and build something instead of sitting in the house doing nothing but talking bad about somebody else and what they do.
As someone who has also built small engines believe me, it's real.
This thing sounds incredible and is pretty much the best thing I've seen on this site in a long time. Keep it up, I can't wait for the V10!
in my baja that would be so sweet
My last full sized car had a 383 Chevy with tip manifold and it looked really good, so I wanted it on the model. Intake pipes were the hardest part to make tho on a manual mill!
I want one of these so bad.. how do I get em?!?!
@Cameron Reynolds that's pretty much the only way I've been able to find them is either hand made and a shit ton of money or expensive blueprints
@@blakethefoxxo5162 Conley sells smal v8 engines
I have a Honda been using it for 10 years now without broken down anything.. while my friends with other brand name cars often break down each year. I love Honda man it saved myself so much money.
Who would spend 3 years building this and only shoot one short video? Hmm..
Rob Torresan I have seen the build blog. Dozens of missing steps etc. Have you seen it? I saw how it wouldn't run with a carburetor then magically it runs with fuel injection? Raises more than a little suspicion. Gary Conley makes mini v8s for his business and he can't make "tiny" fuel injection work but Keith on his first engine build in his life makes it all come together? Glow fuel V8s (schillings plans) are all over the internet. That's what I think this is. But it looks great so keep the fucking snide remarks to yourself :o)
Rob Torresan By your response you know I'm correct. Half wit
MrRexQuando ua-cam.com/video/RUv1hv7g7WA/v-deo.html
That is ORSOM, steady idle no vibration very good engineering.
more torque than a honda
Excellent! That sounds as smooth as any production car.
lmao thats a small Coyote 5.0 lolololololol
Yes, one day, but the problem with selling it now would be that I would have to make it portable, which means packaging all the cooling system, ignition, ecu, etc into a nice neat unit. I'll do it one day, but I can't spare the time at the moment. Cheers.
Insane!!! The hours it took to make this work it's an amazing feat!!! Genius!!!
I've no idea how much power this thing will put out. Not much at a guess!
I'm planning on making a small dyno for the next engine. I just wanted to see if I could make a working engine. Now I know I can I'm now going to make a high performance v10 and then give it some proper work to do.
I quite fancy twin turbos too!
A Bridgeport and an old lathe... Subscribed.
Without a doubt, the most beautiful, brilliant, and advanced miniature engine ever built.
Absolutely brilliant! This is the type of work that inspires others. Thanks for sharing.
I'm an aerospace Machinist and man this thing is so much detail
Never seen a V8 designed like this, not gonna lie. But that is still very cool!
That tiny alternator is so cute!
Not many people left in this world that can make stuff with there hands. Thanks great. Wow!!
The injector sits in the vee of the block. It's fastened to the base of the inlet manifold and squirts upwards onto a spray bar at the top of the manifold.
Then it gets sucked back down into 8 channels in the inlet.
Incredible ... Beautifully built work of art 👍
Looks inspired by the L98 or LT5 engines found in Corvettes! Awesome!
Keith, this is awesome work. I have read through every page on the Home Model Machinist forum regarding your build and am blown away. For those that haven't seen the build progress, go to homemodelmachinist forum, the project is labeled "1-4-scale-v8-first-project-13548" and read the forum progressing this amazing build. Well done!
Hey that is an L98 with tuned port injection just like in my '87 Camaro. Awesome!
Hi Keith. Absolutely astounding feat of engineering! Are you planning on doing a write up of how you built it/made components? Would love to know more about this. Are you planning on showing it anywhere?
OH MY GOD!! That alternator is adorable!
Looks just like an L98 TPI Corvette/Camaro Iroc engine, sounds like one too! Just completly blown away Kieth, just saw your V10 and am so impressed(and a little jealous) by your skills
Wow, for you to make something so real it looks fake to some people is remarkable. someone saying its not real is kind of like the best compliment.
Sure thing Mr. WetBlanket. This man is showcasing his amazing talent and skills, not trying to revolutionize the world or something (that's a job for world-changing youtube commenters like you, of course).
You are a true master of your craft. Even beyond. Beautiful
If this was offered as a kit, I would buy it in a heartbeat
Stunning achievement - I can barely conceive of the skills and knowledge building something as beautiful and functionally elegant as this requires. If I were young enough I know who I'd go to in search of an apprenticeship!!!
Please let your be my eployee!
But, you have to live in (or move to) Norway! This is the most smooth running small V8 I have ever seen!!
I think this is grand, Keith. Good work!
Even tiny V8s sound great
I like the old General Motors style tuned-port intake!
This is pure art! :) Astonishing piece of work!
this is awesome. im even more surprised that 70 ppl could give this a thumbs down?!. I want to see it put into an RC SRT10 or an RS SS
+Greg Campbell
there was some controversy a while ago when people started thinking the engine was just a plastic moulded kit, and I'd dubbed the sound on afterwards. My second video seems to have silenced the disbelievers.
4 valves per cylinder?? beautiful work!!!
Hands down, piece of machined engineering art.
Dude you should make a massive rc muscle car with that!!
You have insanely mad fabrication skills...
Absolutely love it. Please post a 'making off' episode :D
This would be the best christmas gift ever! :')
Thanks for comments so far. Yes all manual machines I'm afraid. Would like to go cnc, but old lathe and Bridgeport in the shed at the moment. Just started 1/3rd scale V10, so see you again in a couple of years!
You know what production engine this reminds me of? The 1990s Corvette ZR1. Only time Chevy put a dual overhead cam, 4 valve per cylinder engine in the Corvette. The intake manifold is very reminiscent of the LT1 and ZR1 of the time period from what I recall.
That is just , well, the mostbestus little V8 I have ever seen on Tube ...
Motor Authority brought me here, I always thought low-displacement and large cylinder banks don't make a good mix, you have my respect :)
I always see these tiny engines and think they would be cool on a go-kart if they were big enough.
Thats amazing!! Beautiful craftsmanship you should be extremely proud. Such a smooth idle I couldnt believe it.
About 2200rpm I guess. The flywheel is made from Tungsten alloy so it will idle lower, around 1400, but doesn't sound as good.
This is amazing! How can anyone dislike this?
I can't even guess what the power is. I may try and rig up a simple dyno and give it a whirl.
Beautiful work Keith. Sounds wonderful. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Keith great job, I see you got the smoking issue solved
That’s simply amazing! I think the GM Tune Port intake would be a great combination with the overhead cam engine like was done here!!!
Never heard of GUI program.
Single fuel injector made using internals of Fiat punto injector. Think it's a Weber Pico.
Awesome! It's like a mini L98 TPI engine.
Beautiful Keith. I've been watching your build and waiting eagerly for a video for ages. Excellent work.
Absolutely fantastic mate, sounds terrific.
Woah, and it runs so smooth too. Lovely!
superb! congrats to whoever made it!
amazing.. liked to see a build blog of one some day? would've been great.
Heres for his new V10:
www.modelenginemaker.com/index.php/topic,3007.0.html
Now when are one of these going to go in a working miniature RC car? That would be so awesome.
you could always make another one around 200 cc for a go kart... lol. That would be loads of fun!
Still sounds better than a Prius ever could and hell it's probably faster as well. LOL
A Prius Googoomobile with a COEXIST sticker will save humanity!
@@waterheaterservices 😂😂😂
best one I've seen so far. Excellent, Please share some more the building process. Very interested
The program is called Tuner Studio. It came with the Megasquirt. Very user friendly.
The future of the RC cars
WOW, you sir, are a true craftsman.
Beautiful art in motion!
Ok this is literally the coolest model engine to date I've sen a couple but awesome ! Put it in a RC ! I will buy it for big bucks !
sounds better than my actual car, probably makes more power too.
wow incredible work, look forward to see the next project
Amazing man! Absolutely amazing! And yes I'd love to watch a version without the silencers!
I.d love to see something like this in a scale r.c. car! Awsome video and beautiful build by the way!
I'm in love with a model engine!
It doesn't actually run. See Garry Conley if you want to see one that runs. Also notice Garry went through 12 designs before he got one to work. This engine is a work of art just a facade though :(
Superb job building the engine amazing to see. Two of those in a model riva Aquarama and I suspect someone would pay the same as a real Riva just to have it. I shall be saving milk bottle tops from now on!
