How to catch coral trout using SLOW PITCH JIGGING techniques - Whitsunday Islands

  • Heres a "how to" on rigging and using slow pitch jigs to catch Coral Trout in the Whitsunday islands region.
    This particular day I dropped the kids to school then put the tinny in to take advantage of a nice weather window. We fished the lower Smith group of islands and worked our way south picking up a nice feed of trout along with sweetlip, cobia, trevally and a tuna, all before school pick up at 3. I explain the basics of slow pitch which is a very effective way to catch a huge variety of demersal/reef species in North Queensland waters, I also run through the strongest rigging technique, setting up your drift and a few other bits of advice to help you guys fish slow pitch jigs effectively.
    Tackle Used:-
    Rod - Oceans Legacy Slow Element Pe 3
    Reel - Ocea Jigger 1500HG Limited
    Line - Sunline Siglon X8 Pe 3
    Leader - Sunline System Shock 100lb
    Featured Jigs - Oceans Legacy Hybrid Contact & Palms/Zets Slow Blatt R 100 both were rigged with the ever reliable BKK Sea Ranger assists in the 2XL size.
    Feel free to hit the comment section if you have any more questions and I'll do my best to get you sorted.
    Cheers

      I would say it’s pretty essential as you want to be fishing where there is fish… Sure you can read the water and have an idea of where to drop but a good sounder verifies how good or bad a spot will be.

    • @Micksgonefishing
      @Micksgonefishing  3 роки тому +2

      Yeah mate, that’s it. It anchors you to the current so you can stay over your jig and even let’s you fish smaller jigs. I’m surprised a lot more people don’t use them. They’re especially good for situations with wind and opposing current directions.

    • @Micksgonefishing
      @Micksgonefishing  5 місяців тому

      This is a slow pitch technique called half pitch, the problem we have up here is that our better fish are very predatory and like a chase so I faster technique excites them more, I’ve tried long fall and the slower techniques a long time ago and it seemed to attract a lot more scavenging species and not the more prized stuff. But yeah definitely still slow pitch just an up tempo version of the half pitch

    what’s up with the eyelets on your rod is it made like that?

    • @Micksgonefishing
      @Micksgonefishing  3 роки тому +1

      Good question!
      Yeah mate, they roll to the left so it helps pull the reel into your palm when fighting a fish. It’s surprising the difference it makes, you don’t notice it until you’ve fished a spiral wrapped rod for a while then you switch back to traditional straight guides with the overhead that you really think wow, I used to fish like that.. the tricky part is if you wind left handed you need a rod spiral wrapped the opposite way, as it’ll do the opposite and unbalance the reel on the power stroke going down.. The other advantage is you can have less guides on the rod as you don’t have to worry about line clearance when loaded, this stiffens up the blank and makes it recover quicker and feeling more crisp 👌🏻 too many advantages to it and I’m surprised more of the bigger brands haven’t followed as the spiral wrapped concept has been around for over a decade..
