  • Have been around Yukon River fishwheels for over 40 years and still run them each summer. Mostly for the fish my family uses but in my later years also have run fish counting projects using some unique technology that we have developed. Here are 3 videos put together over the years showing how they are run and catch fish.
    Also "Carry On: Stan Zuray's Journey from Boston Greaser to Alaskan Homesteader" is now available on Amazon in paperback, eBook, and audiobook. Amazon reviews always appreciated. www.amazon.com...
    Anyone interested in a signed copy has two options:
    Go to: www.thestanpro... and buy a pre signed book (the simplest)
    Buy a book on Amazon and follow these instructions. (Many have done this and it has worked well. Done hundreds and no mail failures yet).
    1. Get two 12.5 x 9.5" priority mail flat rate envelopes at post office.
    2. Self-address and put postage on one envelope.
    3. Address other one to: Stan Zuray, Box 77172, Tanana, Alaska, 99777 and put book and other envelope in it (folded) and signing instructions if any and I'll sign and return.
    Please send no money - my privilege to sign but an Amazon review would be appreciated. Flat rate both ways will cost you under $15.

    My Dad retired from the US Fish and Wildlife and one of his brothers, my uncle Frank Halfmoon, was a Fisheries Biologist. After retiring, and before his pension kicked in, my Dad worked in the woods at a small Sawmill operation, even setting chokers when he was in his 60's. During his entire life he fished and hunted. Our only source of protein growing up, other than legumes, was Elk, deer and salmon.
    It would have been really, really interesting to talk with my Father about the way you did your fish counts. He worked on the Wildlife end of things later in life. Earlier in his career it was o the fish end. He passed away a year ago in November at the age of 94. He also worked for eight years on the governing body of our tribes after leaving the woods. He was active outdoors until he started Dyalisis at about age 90.
    Although I have watched your show since it's inception. With the force of the water turning the fish wheel, how does running it 24 hours a day at times, affect the moving parts if the wheel? Are there gears involved and how do you keep everything from rusting and rotting as most things rust and rot away from exposure to moisture.
    And are there other wheels counting fish? And what is the purpose for counting fish? I know that it's a typical practice, but does the count affect the amount of days you are allowed to fish? I have a curious mind. Sorry about all the questions. I live in Washington State and the oil and gas industry are doing their best to destroy our eco system which has a direct impact on the ocean and ultimately affects all aspects of fish and wildlife throughout the world.

      I would have enjoyed talking to him I'm sure. When the USFWS hired me to let them tag fish out of my wheel that was the beginning of a lot of my fisheries science education. I went on to do it all myself and the object was to get a better idea of the runs so the proper management could be decided upon.

    Great to see a positive fishing approach to conservation. Hope fish numbers are growing on the river.

    • @stanzuray
      @stanzuray  4 роки тому

      Fish numbers are not growing and even the opposite is happening. Commercial fishing moves from one species to another and it is a fallacy that Alaska has world class commercial fish management.

    • @philiptipping6738
      @philiptipping6738 4 роки тому +1

      @@stanzuray that's not right, don't the commercial fishers want their rivers to have good levels of healthy fish for ever. That plain lack of foresight. Phil.

    • @stanzuray
      @stanzuray  3 роки тому

      Fishermen are told the runs are fine to harvest large commercial numbers from it. The State has multiple fisheries divisions like the subsistence, sport and commercial divisions. Commercial fish div. is allowed to run the management even though subsistence (food for the people's use) is suppose to be the first priority by law. That kinds says it right there. Hard to expect the normal fisherman to not commercial fish when management says it's not necessary. Fishermen are good at fishing not biology and management.

    Hi Stan, great to see a new video about this interesting technique. I always saw some of these on your TV Show Yukon Men. Unfortunately were are here a lot behind on the serie. German TV needs so long to show new episodes. For me as a passionate fisherman its a dream to see all this great salmons. May be you could show us a little bit about your trapping season. Best wishes from Germany and God Bless.

Shorter trips as a week are not useful because I loose just two day only on traveling and it came also up to 5k $. At the moment on a dream to realize. May be in the future I will able to fulfill this dream. My best wishes to you and God Bless.

    Stan, what kind of decisions do the agencies make based on the counts you give them?

    • @stanzuray
      @stanzuray  4 місяці тому +1

      depends on the implications to the fishery politics at the moment but they do get used to add to the data taken on the river to assess the overall counts. It was valuable enough that the projects I ran were funded for years and I was actually asked to run them.

    • @stanzuray
      @stanzuray  5 років тому +1

      It is open in summer only to the Yukon river south side 6 miles upriver of the village. It is a boat trip from there without the truck. From Feb 1st to say April 10th the river is frozen enough to drive across and down to the village when the wind hasn't blown in the crossing etc. which is often. All that has reduced the roads impact considerably.

      @stanzuray  5 років тому

      You're looking at 50 million to put in a bridge. The road was peanuts compared to that. That's why there is no bridge and will not be for some time or ever, probably
