American Beavers weigh 55 pounds and they are basically a Giant flat tail rat. Just think of a large dog in size. Then, consider that they move entire TREES into the water to place them. They regularly fell 16 inch and larger trees one y cousin's property. They are as good a lumber jack as an engineer.

    "The road's collapsing!"
I saw that coming. If no one fills the hole with some gravel and soil/sand, the erosion will speed up and it won't be long before the road becomes impassable. Yes, the complete culvert needs to be replaced, but in the meantime someone should try to slow the erosion. I saw plenty of rocks in the channel there.
An old friend, who had beaver issues year-after-year, told me that putting a little dishwashing detergent (liquid) upstream will chase the beavers away, since the soap would wash away the oils in their pelts. Just an idea; however, getting rid of all the beavers will be an issue for your channel, no?

    • @davelister2
      @davelister2 Рік тому +2

I’m not sure what the legalities are but just in my mind doing this would fall under animal cruelty laws, would the soap wash off and the natural oils replenish themselves? Yes, but still not the most humane way, just trap and relocate them.

And you don't want them gone from the area completely, they are a valuable part of the ecosystem, it's just tough to leave room for them.

Since when did beavers become masons? Those beavers started bringing small boulders. Soon they will figure out mortar and cement, then we are all in trouble. :D

Yes beavers do use stones to hold down the dams but I’d agree these are a bit large, perhaps a friend of the beavers dropped them off 😂

Wondering f the debris that is moved and is allowed to wash downstream, does it build up again somewhere else when it meets the next log or branch?

You are the best when it comes to removing beaver dams, I watch almost all the videos on UA-cam about dams removal and you take first place

From the uk , how long does it take the beavers to make this size of dam ?

  • @RLee-zs1ds

Seems like these beavers could not find many branches or wood, so they used a lot of rocks, mud and grass.
Some of those rock are huge, how big are the beavers ?

Yes, beavers are big there. They weights up to 30 kilos.. They are really massive :)

Mantis, you must be part goat because you are so sure-footed jumping around those rocks. (Thank goodness Roberta looks like Momma and not Goat Daddy. 😅)
Seriously, how much weight can one of those flat tailed water squirrels move. Some of those rocks look to be over 10 kg each. This was a very orderly built dam also with layers of vertical and alternating horizontal sticks. From the scraping noise, there seemed to be a large number of rocks incorporated into this dam. They are amazing little flat tailed water rat engineers. I can guarantee you pissed them off removing this damn

consider that on may cousin's property they regularly drop 16 to 24 inch trees. then they pull them into the water where they can move them easily. The problem is that my cousin has a LAKE and they are destroying it, trying to fill it with sediment so the water will spread out. Funny too, there is a lowland that they could work in forever, but they don't like that area because it floods.

I didn't know that beavers could move rocks that big and place them exactly where they want.
