- To celebrate the Duncan Rhodes Painting Academy's first year on UA-cam we thought we'd paint a beloved Age of Sigmar character that has been reimagined and still looks magnificent... SIGVALD, PRINCE OF SLAANESH from Games Workshop. In this guide we show you how to easily paint that gold armour, how to apply a simple wet blending technique to his flowing cloak and of course, how to get that unique effect on his mirror shield. We also just want to say a massive thank you for the support, kindness and awesomeness you have shown us over the last year. Here's to many more. Remember to Subscribe to the channel if you haven't done so already and if you want to see more full tutorials like this one then why not check out our website at www.duncanrhodes.com where we have well over 100 painting guides.
Thanks you.

Sigvald is the very definition of "business in the front, party in the back"
But also some party in the front too.
And that party don't stop
Duncan handled that party in the back with as much tact as was possible
LOL....ass-less armor
" I would like to extend to you, an invitation to the Pants Party"
Why does Duncan never go out during winter?
He just has two thin coats.
This is Good Posting, folks.
Believe it or not, two thin coats (but not too thin!) are better than one thick coat even in winter, because they help create a coat of air for better insulation
Just two thin coats? They have perfect coverage though!
"We need some Auric Armour Gold". How appropriate, considering that Sigvald's armour (at least in Fantasy) WAS the Auric Armour.
I love how he paints and everytime i watch a video i learn alot. He really is the bob ross of warhammer. Awesome job
Thank you @Dude4739
Bob Ross of Warhammer.. Wor Boss.. Just sayin'
Oh dear ...
Painting Sigvald while a Keeper lurks in the background? And not a single dislike?
The Dark Prince is pleased...
I never see something like that. Amazing
the three dislikes are Bloodletters of Khorne
It now has 6 dislikes....The Dark Prince smiles
The ending music and sparkles is classic.
I've been painting miniatures for about 15 years now. Looking back, had I seen this video, it would have rocketed my skills ahead 5 years of fumbling on my own pre-youtube.
I honestly think this is the single best painting tutorial on UA-cam, at least that I've seen in my years of painting. Easy to follow, relaxed, all of his tools and paints are easily obtained or already owned by most of his audience, all the techniques are easy to apply, BRILLIANT sneaky wet blending lesson, and a great finished product. This would be a great model to pick up if only to have it to follow this guide along with Duncan.
Thanks for the DRPA and all your years of great, informative, wholesome content!
10:03 There you go.
how did you know
thanks xd
why did I thought that this would be a time stamp for Sigvalds...backside? xD
@@beardhammerwargaming because we all know why we here. Dat bootay!
Thank you for showing wet blending on his cloak. The final result is great.
39:27 I almost snorted my drink all over over my keyboard
Killed me with the turntable scene 🤣
A fantastic guide, definitly going to use these techniques on other models.
Glad it was helpful!
Sensational! Such shading and scintillating strokes is sure to show us simpering simpletons the salacious and scandalous show of the Scion of Slaanesh! Simply superb!
You killed it Duncan !! Loved the cloak on this model, great example... thanks !
An alternate idea to the Wildwood shading of the gold armor is to mix Shyish Purple with Fyreslayer Flesh. The purple tone rather than going with a pure brown helps increase the contrast of the shadows to the gold armor due to the colors being complimentary. It also helps tie the entire model together by introducing similar tones in the shadows as you have on the cape.
I’ve used that technique in my watercolors recently, actually. The results are spectacular!
@@srbrant5391 I learned it from Sorastro, another terrific painter on UA-cam. Specifically his one on Thanos from Marvel: Crisis Protocol. He did some NMM gold for the Mad Titan, and used some purple in the shadows and I was like "oh my God why don't I do this?!"
Been playing around with the concept ever since. I tend to use more orange-tinted Browns when I paint something majority blue, and contrast red miniatures with grassy green bases. Stuff like that. Little things to give that extra bit of jump.
@@srsgoblin thanks for the tips! one thing I found recently that helps me select colours is considering that brown is literally just dark orange, and the only reason we consider it a different colour is because english has a word for it.
@@Born_Stellar orange is just light brown.
@@BuchNastyGames brown is just orange with context
What i love about Duncan is he understands that usually less is more. I know he could give crazy technical paint schemes and tutorials if he choose but sometimes it takes away more then it adds and he's mastered how to blur those lines perfectly. He's taught me if you first master your brush and your paints, then you'll master any model
Exactly! And thank you for the kind words 😊
I am here for my prescription: two thin coats.
Duncan is a Warhammer treasure. I learned pretty much everything from him when it came to painting.
Something magnificent comes this way
Finally we move into wet blending! I've always found that while many great folks in the mini painting community (Miniac, Vince Venturela, etc) have put together notable resources on how the technique itself works, a very grounded breakdown like what we've come to know and love from dear old Duncan has just been missing. Sometimes it's good to hone in on a particular application of a concept rather than speaking in broad strokes, and I think the wet blending used here is a very good example for people who know the general idea of what needs to be done, but could use a solid yet both quick and simple explanation and example on exactly how it's applied
Thank you Aaron 😊
That was only 1-2 minutes but probably the best wet blend tip I’ve ever seen on YT for the cloak. Like suddenly it seems so much easier...
Cheeks out for Slaanesh.
Superb stuff, thank you for these tutorials your passion is wonderful.
One year of absolute greatness from you two. Here's to another year
We need a dedicated channel for models like this and other grand models. And we also need you Duncan to do it! 😯 this looks amazing!
Thank you Xavier. We have a website (duncanrhodes.com) with plenty of miniatures like this and more on the way 😊
Congrats on the anniversary, Duncan and Roger!
That outro/finished model section is superb 😂 👏
Yes finally Duncan has done wet blending! Glad he's able to break away from the strict base, wash, highlight formula now that he's got his own thing going.
That was what the GW painting team came up with to make painting easier for casual people that get anxious. Duncan's job was pretty much to show how easy it is to do that. Painting should never be daunting or stressful. Too many people look at Golden Demon winners and end up putting themselves down thinking that they'll never achieve something that good, but they don't realise that it takes thousands and thousands of hours of work to get to that standard, whereas the GW way is about making things simple and effective, but most of all, enjoyable.
@@WardenOfTerra yeah I get that, but I always thought that Duncan could do a pretty good job at showing the fundamentals of more advanced techniques without painting competition ready miniature, unlike most of the other painting tutorial videos.
It's Sigvald; Dry blending was never an option. ;D
Please please please do more tutorials in this style duncan. I learn so much more when you go further in depth with your painting. Even with your gw tuts such as andarielle etc your teaching method is so good when you do more advanced techniques. I honestly believe thats why you are so popular. Generally the longer the tutorials and direction (like this one) the better they are.
Darren Lathems small video series did the same thing, and its amazing how well you two get your points across.
One thing i would love to see is getting gold trim to look like the style you see on abaddon or chaos models in general on the box art. The recipe is so hard to figure out.
Great work on this video, it was superb
Thank you Mark. We try to cover painting for all levels. Glad we are on the right track
The sparkly fanfare at the end was so appropriate for a Slaanesh mini!
Wait nobody is going to comment on the "loin cock" slip up at 10:10? Duncan seems to have fallen for Sigvald's otherworldly charms as well!
Hahahaha.
Duncan, you are a great teacher. The world is a better place with your channel. Whatever you are earning is not enough for your skills and demeanor. Videos like this make me very happy.
Love that cloak, you make wetbledning look like a walk in the park!
We just want to make it accessible for everyone and encourage fellow hobbyists to give it a try 😊
Wow, he really is really really ridiculously good looking ❤
Congratulations on your one year anniversary! What better miniature to celebrate with too
Thank you very much! We thought he would be great for this
This video was MAGNIFICENT
Yay
I discovered two coats of Seraphim Sepia over wraithbone is great for blonde hair when painting my Blood Angels. Glad to see someone else using this method.
It isn't easy being really really really ridiculously good looking.
I'm so relieved to be able to see the paints wet and dry like this, since seeing something like the purple shading on the pink cloak while it's wet is something that would make me panic had I been the one doing it and not seen the dry result beforehand.
Was not expecting that turntable music and effects :p. Amazing! And yes, we're all here for that butt shot.
What a reveal! Bow chica wow wow
Rhodes, not only have you helped me improve my miniature painting skills, your techniques have improved my _two-dimensional_ artwork as well!
Very good tip for the Reikland Fleshshade and the Gloss variant! Thanks for sharing!
The paint job on that cloak is some of the best work I've ever seen Duncan do (and that's saying something)!
Excessively perfect 👌
Wow, thanks Rick. Glad you enjoyed it
When I thought this video couldn't get more perfect, I got that sweet ass ending. YEAH !
Would love to see some nighthaunt tutorials.
Unbelievable! You're the Bob Ross of tabletop painting 😬
"WOOOO, YEAHHHH!" ~ Sigvald, wearer of battle chaps.
Kudos to GW for such a gorgeous model. Kudos to Duncan for such an amazing paint job on Sigvald. I appreciate the video. Thanks.
Crazy to think it's been a year already, congratulations here's to many more years to come.
It's been a wild ride so far 😊
@@DuncanRhodesDRPA Haha it's a good thing us miniature painters we're born to be wild 🏍🎸.
Duncan this tutorial has given me the confidence and understanding to do wet blending for shading for the first time!
one word .
FABULOUS!!!
That cloak is a fabulous work of art.
Wow, thanks. We hope it gives people the confidence to try
@@DuncanRhodesDRPA absolutely, I've started painting about two years ago and I've become a pretty decent painter. I learned a lot from you over the years so thank you for all the tips, tricks and inspiration. Watching you paint has certainly been a massive inspiration. Your tutorial on Archeon helped me break through a lot of barriers.
39:34 that Bumshot... Glorious!
Indeed! 😂
Slaanesh approved this tutorial
Oh wow this is astonishing work.
By far my favorite video so far!
Jeeezus!!! Completing that cloak made me spit my morning tea out! Almost as much as hearing its been a year already 🤯 well done guys and probably my favourite video yet!
Great to hear!
I can definitely apply the technique you used to paint his cape to my saint Celestine model!
This is my go to place for painting guides for sure 👌 God bless you and all who read this.... and everyone here
Really cool seeing Duncan doing wet blending and stuff. Bet it's liberating to not feel like you're stuck doing the GW way all the time.
painting this model has even impressed slaanesh
@39:32 Glorious, that's what I was waiting for!
🤣🤣🤣
Lol. Loved the final turntable shot.
as always looks great. thou im surprised he doesnt use lipstick, slanesh must not be pleased XD
20:06 gave me anxiety when Duncan dip his brush in the medium after touching druchi violet. Hahaha!
He looks amazing! 👏
YES!
The Emperor protects, but Lord Duncan provides.
Discount Fulgrim looking smooth! Great job, as ever!
After all of that hard work, I recommend adding a few specks of rhinox hide under the tunic at the rear.
This video finally convinced me to give wet blending a try! It really is much easier than I thought. Thank you!
Glad we could help!
Wonderful painting as always Duncan.
Thank you! Cheers! Glad you liked it
I got him as a birthday gift to myself this week :) Looking forward to painting him up as gorgeously as I can manage
Happy birthday! And you'll do an amazing job!
@@DuncanRhodesDRPA Thanks :) Your old GW painting tutorials were actually what gave me the confidence to get started in the first place a few years ago!
That’s awesome, fantastic tutorial thank you 👍
No problem 👍
nice little Zoolander in the end, brought a smile to my face. Love the videos!
yay! Someone picked up on it lol
Congratulations on the year dude!
Simply amazing
Loved the wet blending section on the cloak
Thank Phil 👍
Holy cow a year! Congrats Dunc!
Would really love to see a high quality painting tutorial for a Saurus warrior (old blood ideally)
@Duncan this is the Most Smoothie and easiest Intro to wetblending you did there on the cloak
Congrats on the anniversary! I wasn’t sure if I’d ever delve into miniatures, but your wonderful videos make it feel much less daunting. Time to start hunting for supplies! 🙂
Definitely making me want to buy and paint. Thanks guys!
Our pleasure Johan 😊
The editing at the was incredible. Kudos to the both of you Duncan and Roger, you are getting too good at this.
Thank you Donald 😊
Love how you said masonry abit like 'cool whip' (family guy reference)
LMFAO! The way you said "his bum" about killed me.
at what time in the video was this? I seem to have missed it
@@UA-camBuild-b7b 26:30
@@cadmiumv thanks!
And then the blushing and the little grin. Duncs is such a gem.
@@punkrockzoologist9449 Too pure for this world.
Truly magnificent 😊
I am wondering if you will do some episodes about using airbrush’s. How to set up and basic maintenance of the unit. Great job as always.
That ending totally got me XD
yay 🤣
If Duncan paints a Bloodthirster he will have painted all 4 Greater Daemons on camera
Edit: I looked back 6 years ago on the Warhammer Channel and he did paint a Bloodthirster.
...and we want to redo it 😁
@@DuncanRhodesDRPA what a joy it is to watch , you helped (way back) so much with your Nagash session! thank you...
Love that song at the end :D
😂😂😂
That is one handsome mothertrucker :o I'm going to buy and paint this bad boy for sure
this figure reminds me of kars and i love it
I can easily see Daemonettes playing air guitar with someone’s legs.
This video is rated S for Sigvald
The music on the last part though. LOL!
Another great painting guide. Great tip mixing gloss and normal washes. Keep up the good work👌
The only thing missing at the end was the disco ball above sigvald. Absolutely superb painting Duncan. Thank you.
Thank you , DRPA .
Our pleasure!
Thank you, Papa Duncan for this awesome tutorial! 🥰
Loved the finished model montage
Very interesting seeing how you do the armour on this... something I havent seen on any UA-cam tutorials is different colours of armour from history, for example reddened of the 17th century and blackened armour from 15th to 17th century... a couple of warlords pike and shotte cuirassiers would be great models to display this :)
Fabulous video and results Duncan 👍
Thanks 👍
Oh Duncan, you're too good for this world
