Believe it or not, two thin coats (but not too thin!) are better than one thick coat even in winter, because they help create a coat of air for better insulation
I've been painting miniatures for about 15 years now. Looking back, had I seen this video, it would have rocketed my skills ahead 5 years of fumbling on my own pre-youtube. I honestly think this is the single best painting tutorial on UA-cam, at least that I've seen in my years of painting. Easy to follow, relaxed, all of his tools and paints are easily obtained or already owned by most of his audience, all the techniques are easy to apply, BRILLIANT sneaky wet blending lesson, and a great finished product. This would be a great model to pick up if only to have it to follow this guide along with Duncan. Thanks for the DRPA and all your years of great, informative, wholesome content!
Sensational! Such shading and scintillating strokes is sure to show us simpering simpletons the salacious and scandalous show of the Scion of Slaanesh! Simply superb!
Finally we move into wet blending! I've always found that while many great folks in the mini painting community (Miniac, Vince Venturela, etc) have put together notable resources on how the technique itself works, a very grounded breakdown like what we've come to know and love from dear old Duncan has just been missing. Sometimes it's good to hone in on a particular application of a concept rather than speaking in broad strokes, and I think the wet blending used here is a very good example for people who know the general idea of what needs to be done, but could use a solid yet both quick and simple explanation and example on exactly how it's applied
What i love about Duncan is he understands that usually less is more. I know he could give crazy technical paint schemes and tutorials if he choose but sometimes it takes away more then it adds and he's mastered how to blur those lines perfectly. He's taught me if you first master your brush and your paints, then you'll master any model
An alternate idea to the Wildwood shading of the gold armor is to mix Shyish Purple with Fyreslayer Flesh. The purple tone rather than going with a pure brown helps increase the contrast of the shadows to the gold armor due to the colors being complimentary. It also helps tie the entire model together by introducing similar tones in the shadows as you have on the cape.
@@srbrant5391 I learned it from Sorastro, another terrific painter on UA-cam. Specifically his one on Thanos from Marvel: Crisis Protocol. He did some NMM gold for the Mad Titan, and used some purple in the shadows and I was like "oh my God why don't I do this?!" Been playing around with the concept ever since. I tend to use more orange-tinted Browns when I paint something majority blue, and contrast red miniatures with grassy green bases. Stuff like that. Little things to give that extra bit of jump.
@@srsgoblin thanks for the tips! one thing I found recently that helps me select colours is considering that brown is literally just dark orange, and the only reason we consider it a different colour is because english has a word for it.
Please please please do more tutorials in this style duncan. I learn so much more when you go further in depth with your painting. Even with your gw tuts such as andarielle etc your teaching method is so good when you do more advanced techniques. I honestly believe thats why you are so popular. Generally the longer the tutorials and direction (like this one) the better they are. Darren Lathems small video series did the same thing, and its amazing how well you two get your points across. One thing i would love to see is getting gold trim to look like the style you see on abaddon or chaos models in general on the box art. The recipe is so hard to figure out. Great work on this video, it was superb
Duncan, you are a great teacher. The world is a better place with your channel. Whatever you are earning is not enough for your skills and demeanor. Videos like this make me very happy.
Yes finally Duncan has done wet blending! Glad he's able to break away from the strict base, wash, highlight formula now that he's got his own thing going.
That was what the GW painting team came up with to make painting easier for casual people that get anxious. Duncan's job was pretty much to show how easy it is to do that. Painting should never be daunting or stressful. Too many people look at Golden Demon winners and end up putting themselves down thinking that they'll never achieve something that good, but they don't realise that it takes thousands and thousands of hours of work to get to that standard, whereas the GW way is about making things simple and effective, but most of all, enjoyable.
@@WardenOfTerra yeah I get that, but I always thought that Duncan could do a pretty good job at showing the fundamentals of more advanced techniques without painting competition ready miniature, unlike most of the other painting tutorial videos.
I discovered two coats of Seraphim Sepia over wraithbone is great for blonde hair when painting my Blood Angels. Glad to see someone else using this method.
I'm so relieved to be able to see the paints wet and dry like this, since seeing something like the purple shading on the pink cloak while it's wet is something that would make me panic had I been the one doing it and not seen the dry result beforehand.
@@DuncanRhodesDRPA absolutely, I've started painting about two years ago and I've become a pretty decent painter. I learned a lot from you over the years so thank you for all the tips, tricks and inspiration. Watching you paint has certainly been a massive inspiration. Your tutorial on Archeon helped me break through a lot of barriers.
@@DuncanRhodesDRPA Thanks :) Your old GW painting tutorials were actually what gave me the confidence to get started in the first place a few years ago!
Congrats on the anniversary! I wasn’t sure if I’d ever delve into miniatures, but your wonderful videos make it feel much less daunting. Time to start hunting for supplies! 🙂
Very interesting seeing how you do the armour on this... something I havent seen on any UA-cam tutorials is different colours of armour from history, for example reddened of the 17th century and blackened armour from 15th to 17th century... a couple of warlords pike and shotte cuirassiers would be great models to display this :)
It's wonderful to finally be able to comment on Duncan painting videos. All it took was getting his own channel 😂 Great model, btw. I kind of want to find a way to do some crazy conversion and add it to my Blood Angels. He's got enough gold to fit right in!
I LOVE the WH uni with its lore and the models. I have yet to take the plunge into painting minis because of my current existing hobbies....i don't really need another "child" to support. Lol! But deeyum! I love watching stuff like this!!
Congratulations on a year! Hlad to see you got some rest at the end of the video, you looked dead knackered at the start. Hmm, the power of Slaanesh revitalized Duncan?
Can you do a video showing how to do highlights for people who don’t have all of the colors? I struggle mixing, and your style of demonstrating and explaining really works for me.
Well done Duncan, cracking job on that cloak, had to do a double take when you revealed the completed job. One gripe I have is the GW metallics are so grainy and almost glittery, would be interested on your take on the greenstuffworld metal pigments and the vallejo metal colour ranges, you'll be surprised how much better those finer pigments are!
Really amazing job. Next I would like to see a tutorial on a Sequitor. Specifically a Sequitor character that has a Rakarth Flesh tabard because there's just no good tutorials out there. I swear I've watched every one and none of them do a good job of painting that tabard. You yourself have a Battle Ready tutorial back from your Warhammer days, but still, the tabard looks rough on that one too. I'm sure if you did one of your newer more detail oriented tutorials on it it'd look amazing. I just can't get the transition from the deep shaded areas to the peaks of the creases to look good no matter how many different ways I try.
Sigvald is the very definition of "business in the front, party in the back"
But also some party in the front too.
Duncan handled that party in the back with as much tact as was possible
LOL....ass-less armor
" I would like to extend to you, an invitation to the Pants Party"
I love how he paints and everytime i watch a video i learn alot. He really is the bob ross of warhammer. Awesome job
Thank you @Dude4739
Bob Ross of Warhammer.. Wor Boss.. Just sayin'
Oh dear ...
"We need some Auric Armour Gold". How appropriate, considering that Sigvald's armour (at least in Fantasy) WAS the Auric Armour.
Why does Duncan never go out during winter?
He just has two thin coats.
This is Good Posting, folks.

Check out the GSW metal pigments. Use Valejo metal varnish as medium. Gorgeous.

Painting Sigvald while a Keeper lurks in the background? And not a single dislike?
The Dark Prince is pleased...
I never see something like that. Amazing

It now has 6 dislikes....The Dark Prince smiles
