How to test RAM with Memtest 86

- I demonstrate how to test RAM in your computer using MemTest 86. It is a free download that you can find easily with a google search for Memtest 86.
Once you go through and burn the Memtest 86 ISO to a CD you can place it in a computer and boot up from it. Let it run for an hour, or at least 5 passes and it should give you a good idea if your memory is working correctly or not.

@Aldind2x I recommend a couple things, one run this memtest... next run spinright on the HD to make sure there are no bad sectors, the run prime 95 to see if there are any errors on the CPU, then if you game, play an intense game for a couple hours. I suggest playing the game, because the 3D render tests are just usually for the GPU, playing taxes everything better (mice, ram, sound, drivers, etc) I find.
@chaosrealm93 it depends on the system, but 99% of the time that is the way it works.
If the system has 2 2gb sticks the 586mb mark is likely in the first memory stick. Pull that stick out and try putting the second one in it's place and leave the original out. Run the test again for an hour or two and see if it comes back. If not, put the questionable stick back in by itself and test it alone for a couple hours.
@zoom26 It's a good chance that is the issue, if you are trying to overclock the memory that is a clear sign of it.
Hi. I have the memtest screen up from boot cd but nothing is actually happening. Is there a start key? Im probably doing something stupid i know
Thanks man, u are making life easy for people out here... any ways keep it up!
I have a question please!
some times my PC gets hanged and green vertical lines (like Sugarcane) appear. I have to switch off my power supply and restart PC.
I am using Intel Corei5, with 4GB RAM (2x2) on inter HD67CL Motherboard. it is important to tell you that i have a graphic card too and it is sapphire 6790 with 1GB DDR5, 256bit.
Please guide.
Planing to test individually 1st with out 1 RAM & CARD
Which one would be the first one in a laptop?
Hi I'm running this with 2 sticks together can I do that.. please help
It's nice, but personally I wouldn't waste a cd on it. Instead I think it's better to get something like hirens boot cd, where at least then you have multiple tools like this and partedmagic along with some others.
my mem tested bad when i used win mem test @ 1066mhz , 2 dimms at the same time, but when i tested them one at a time @ 800 on memtest they seemed like they okay. is it that my board cant accomodate 1066?
@DefconComputers u said use spinright to check HD and prime 95 for processor are those tools free to download???
is it safe to do something else with the PC while it is stress testing?
Silly question, but do I ESC and then pull out the CD? Or pull out the CD first then press ESC?
I've put Memtest86 on a USB, what do I have to run it from that?
I downloaded memtest86, burned to cd, rebooted the laptop. it brought up a black screen for about 5 minutes and then windows opened. Then after about 2 minutes on the windows desktop while I can hear the cd still churning away, windows shut down again and the computer restarted. went to black screen for about 3 minutes and then windows came up and the cd stopped turning. Any thoughts?
any idea why memtest picks up errors when I use all 3 of my 1 gig ram sticks and run it and doesnt pick up any errors when I run 1 stick at a time to find out which 1 is the bad stick? thx for reply in advance.
Please help me !! There are a few versions which one should i download? And MUST i burn it into a CD ?? Any other ways like transfering to a thumbdrive and using it thru thumbdrive ?
what your pc doesnt boot with the ram sticks in
u can use a usb there is setup to install it on usb u can download it
So if i have a faulty stick then i have to replace it? :s cause i have 4x4gb of ram so i'll have to buy another 4gb if my ram is broken
HI , I have a question. one the test reaches 100 percent on both pass and test showing in the top right on the screen is it OK to stop the scan
. 0 errors were found
So does this test only test the ram in the first slot?
Thank you
I have pass:0 errors:0 is a prblem or good ?
Overheating of the ram do to poor airflow will/can cause errors on ram even on default ram settings. I learned that today... I was getting errors on my 8GB ddr2 800MHz ram kit on default settings and notice all sticks would get a bit hot because not enough air was getting to them even with the side door open... I stuck a USB 120mm fan next to the side so it would blow cool air straight at the ram and behold..... All my ram passed MemTest together after an hour of torture stress!
true, this is what pisses me off about desktops.. so many elements required to simply maintain homeostasis..
my view now is either get a top range desktop with the best maintenance free airflow or water cooled system or just a good quality laptop and dust it off now and again..
Well I know for sure things can't be good from the test I'm performing (1 stick 8gb G.Skill) on Asus A88X-PRO mb along with Amd A10-6800k. Basically the errors are in the 100k+ and rising. I have another identical stick that I will test separately I'm hoping it's just one because this is going to set me back.
hey i have the same problem, my computer is 16gb rams and the test is running too slow and over 100k errors now rising, i wonder if u fixed urs ? do u know how can i fix mine?
I sent mine in to be replaced by G.Skill (manufacturer). So now I don't have the issue or the errors. It was only one stick that was faulty test each one individually
bought a kit of 8gb 2 stick kit from gskill pretty sure it's bad
you mean 255 of ram?
go to memtest com and go to dowloads, dowload the one called "Download - Auto-installer for USB Key (Win 9x/2k/xp/7)"
