Tetris Attack on SNES is a game that has suffered from Audience Stereotype Syndrome. For example, Nintendo didn't believe that girly girl fairies would appeal to an American audience and the majority of gamers were males too.
I recently played Panel De Pon on Switch SNES online. I'm Not usually good at puzzle games, but I still have a lot of fun with it though, and I also love the music. This is coming from someone who's favorite Mario character is Yoshi, and do love SMW2: Yoshi's Island, it is honestly quite a shame they replace Panel de Pon characters with Yoshi's Island characters in International release. Panel De Pon characters could've been another long lasting Nintendo IP, even in the western Market. They have really cool designs that helps the game's chatm and very nice lore proven by the vs story. Not to mention this is supposed to be their game, not Yoshi. Still the international still did a really good job the Yoshi's Island characters blend with the game, and that's cool. But it just sucks that this actually mean Panel De Pon franchise is sacrificed for it, the same way how Super Mario Bros 2 USA sacrifice the Doki Doki Panic's main characters. Then again that just shows how Mario can destroy opportunities of potential IPs because obviously when you slap Mario in the game, it always gauranteed to sell greatly no matter what. That's what happen in Tetris Attack :) Have trouble with demographic? slap a Mario franchise on it as a solution. Interesting how they work around international releases.
The characters in Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic were never gonna become a thing. The game was just the result of a short-lived agreement between Nintendo and Fuji TV. They were created for one expo and abandoned since.
If you look at the map screen in 5:44, you can see those green hills with eyes from Super Mario Bros. 3. They are in both versions which may explains that Panel de Pon was originally meant to be a Yoshi's Island theme puzzle game to begin with. It wouldn't use any Mario related content if it was to be its own original game. Those hills with eyes, only Mario games had those.
@@VOAN Wait, so then that means "Tetris Attack" (or rather Panel de Pon Starring Yoshi or Yoshi's Panel de Pon either title should get the Tetris company off Nintendo's back) was the REAL game!?! That explains why Panel de Pon felt like a pale imitation when I played it (especially with the sprite work on VS mode, because there was clearly WAAAY more effort put into Yoshi and friends in-game looks compared to Lip and her random fairy entourage), I'd love it if Nintendo would just release this version under a different name! Between the more fitting flower field stage for Flutter (NOT Wiggler like the video claims even if that IS her previous form) compared to the basic crystal palace, the improved difficulty of VS mode (I beat the true final boss Cordella on my first try and looking back at the footage it was simply because she made 3 stupid mistakes in a row and didn't have time to make up for them), improved control and sound (playing both back-to-back there was no comparison, the control just feels too slick on Panel de Pon that I kept overshooting the blocks I wanted to switch regularly) and of course the fact THAT version is actually translated and has ALL the modes, there's just no question which one is the superior game (and that's not even counting the super-catchy title remix from "Yoshi's Island" that I love to this day or the fact that if you wait through all the demos you get a cool series of screens having ALL the characters talking about themselves and explaining their stance on the situation complete with fun quirks, personality, and even a few creative uses of size fonts for the text every now and again)!
Aside from forgetting to mention about the track that plays during the fight with Cordelia that is completely absent in _Tetris Attack_ (save for the options menu), this is a pretty spot on analysis. Props.
The reason for this is because it was religious sounding and Nintendo of America had to cut religious references because some guy was worried about content that would offend children. ESRB came later in 1994 which punished Nintendo for being kid-friendly and they matured since then.
This is an old comment, but I don't think the track is completely absent. The theme playing during character selection against Cordelia in PdP is the same as the one used in her stage (at least as far as I can tell). In Tetris Attack the character selection music against Bowser is the same as it was against Cordelia, while Bowser's stage music was the same one was used in stage 11 for PdP. Odd choice though.
Wow. My mom played the yoshi version and I grew up thinking this was a yoshi game. I knew the title name was weird. While I still love the version I grew up with, this panel de pon is genuinely cool. I have a whole new perspective on this game now
It does very innacurate emulation(all games have bugs in them that are specific to ZSNES, the emulator was programmed to "patch" popular games silently to avoid it's own bugs/crashes). Also if you want to play 3DFX games on it will speed up the game screw with the music. ZSNES didn't even get an update in 10 years and it's banned from speedrun websites because of it's innacuracy while bsnes does virtually perfect emulation and snes9x is very good too.
Thanks for the video. I've loved these games for years and am a proud owner of Panel de Pon. I think I prefer Panel de Pon slightly more than Tetris Attack... but you make a good point at 6:44.
I wish Nintendo would finally localize Panel De Pon...either the original SNES/Super Famicom version or the Gamecube version ( yeah, there are slight differences beyond just improved graphics ), I don't care just give me Lip & her friends :/
Or, add My Little Pony characters and stay true to the Japanese version minus the difficulty with one stage edited for a daytime sky theme not plagerizing Windy's stage from Japanese version. Title of the game will be Pony Puzzle and most of the content is reused from the Japanese version with one content reused from American version such as difficulty.
OMG it's my favourite puzzle game! Yeah, this series never really took off, did it? I wish it did! I've played Panel de Pon on an airplane once (yes they had a SNES emulator as in-flight entertainment) so that's where I discovered some of these differences! You still shared a bunch I didn't know, though! Great vid :)
Panel de Pon is so cute, too bad Nintendo was too afraid of releasing games with female characters outside of Japan because at the time videogames were more for boys, those fairies and the good old 90's anime drawings are so good
Sakujima Iwata Oh I dunno, Tetris Attack is plenty cutesy. Me and my best friend would play it for hours. They most likely did it that way because Mario sells everything.
Pierce Gossett And because she's a badass. Panel De Pon would be quite the gamble due to the Japanese style, and the fact your main character is a cutesy fairy
Pierce Gossett she didnt take off her helmet on a planet with no breathable atmosphere for humans or while fighting creatures, sexist amirite *bashes head in with a hammer* because real logic is make believe

@@VGMStudios33 He's thinking of Dr. Mario and Puzzle League, which WAS for the GBA. You're thinking of Planet Puzzle League, which was the DS title. Puzzle League Express, an ultra condensed (but cheaper) version of Planet Puzzle League came a couple years after that on the DSi shop.
The options menu exists in Panel de Pon’s ROM. In Panel de Pon, the options menu cannot be accessed by normal means, but can be accessed via three Pro-Action Replay codes. The fifth menu option is not absent, but invisible. Trying to access the options menu without entering the first two Pro-Action Replay codes sends you back to the title screen. Trying to go back to the title screen from the main menu with the second Pro-Action Replay code causes the game to crash.
for the stage around 6:16 didn't they take the line blocks from Panel De Pon and use them for Kirby's rock formations in Smash Bros? It looks awfully familiar XD
When I was young I had an English SNES but my Japanese grandad bought me a Japanese adapter for it, so grew up playing panel de Pon, sim city, Kirby golf course etc in Japanese, could not understand a thing but still loved it
Some of the differences in Tetris Attack seem like patches to Panel de Pon, like the restored Options menu and added victory theme for VS. mode. Nintendo finally brought Panel de Pon in its original form to the West via Nintendo Switch Online, so that's really cool.
bezoticallyyours83 Panel De Pon is the same game but actually original. It doesn't rely on Yoshi and Mario themes to sell it, it did its own thing, and did it well.
Best puzzle game ever. I worked at Nintendo of America as a tester in 2000 and the Tetris Attack scene was still going strong at lunch each day. They had one of those standup SNES machines with the SNES behind the plastic in the lunch room (as well as a bunch of other arcade machines). My test lead had been a tester on Tetris Attack when it went through NoA so he was _really_ good.
After I played Panel de Pon on the SNES library via Nintendo Switch Online, I just had to check this out. I've played the Game Boy version a lot when I was a child. Great video overall.
My mom and I played Tetris Attack all the time from it's release till the day she died. She would have been very excited to learn that her favourite game actually had a different look than the one she's used to! Our head-to-heads were very intense because we were both really good. Like me, the first thing she'd notice is that Panel de Pon's CPU is nowhere near as aggressive as the SNES version lol American version chains more; Japanese version combos more... chains are harder to fight against and when you hear the opponent's character make their noise when you get a combo, it ramps up the intensity. Great times. RIP Mom, 1963-2009.
Missed opportunity to put this game on the SNES Classic, however it’s on the the Super Famicom Classic. The SNES Classic has no puzzle game or Beat’em ups which is desperately needed to make it more worth having.
Speaking of 6:19, in the Super Smash Bros series, starting with Melee, there are five (six in Super Smash Bros Ultimate) stones Kirby can turn into to for his Down Special. Lip’s junk block is one of them.
One other thing about the options menu in Tetris attack (thus inaccessible in Panel de Pon) is you can modify player input to be AI controlled, both 1st and 2nd inputs. This means you can actually battle an AI that is harder then "very hard" Bowser/Cordelia in the 2P mode (Or watch 2 AIs fight). You can also watch the AI do single player modes this way if you want. This was obviously for testing purposes, but when I found it as a kid I thought it was some secret hard-mode or something since the AI on the highest (not normally accessible) difficulty usually gets like x10+ chains on a regular basis.
I loved pokemon puzzle league, played it all the time with my dad as a kid. He lost all the time but I appreciate the time he spent with me. I'm glad they brought this to the switch's snes lineup
Pokémon PL was a quick and mediocre hame looking to cash in the sudden popularity of the anime in the west. I’m glad it existed but now you can enjoy Panel de Pon/Tetris Attack which is better in every possible way.
@@AlexRN I found panel de pon to be easier. Puzzle league was harder and though it might have been cheaper, if it didn't exist I would not have gotten panel de pon
3:54 the critter from Panel de Pon was switched with Fly Guys and Goonie Bird from SMW2:Yoshi's Island. 4:03 Critter was swapped with Grinder from SMW2: Yoshi's Island. 4:07 The Kappa was replaced with Claw Daddy from SMW2:Yoshi's Island. Also how the CPU plays the game in VS mode. I've noticed it more in super hard mode ( when you start a new VS mode move the cursor over HARD. Press Up, L, R and A buttons at the same time and the color background goes from orange to red. works the same in Panel de Pon too). The CPU in Tetris Attack focuses more on chain attacks. While in Panel de Pon, the CPU speed is faster and they try to overwhelm you by making combos.
Former competitive Tetris Attacker here. Um.. No, it's not. Panel de Pon's CPU is nowhere near as aggressive with the chains on hard mode compared to Tetris Attack. The Japanese version combos more whereas as the American version chains more. Chains are much harder to fight against than combos.
Thanks, I only played Pokemon Puzzle League but I had heard about the predecessors for a while, but never really checked them out. Does anyone know of any mod reinjecting Tetris Attack improvements (Options menu, Victory music) into Panel de Pon? Simlarly to how FF 7 International was re-released in Japan - because the Japanese version of Tetris Attack fills that role but that's a full reskinning, and some players may just want the patches.
One new thing I just notice when re-watching this again and playing Panel de Pon on NSO. I believe Panel de Pon was always meant to use the Yoshi's Island characters/theme to begin with. At first I thought there wouldn't be anything to distinguish it from Tetris Attack but if you look carefully at the the map screen comparison at 5:44 where Lip/Yoshi is standing on the floating island, on the flooded valley below, there are those green hills with eyes from Super Mario Bros. 3. They are both in Tetris Attack and Panel de Pon so yeah I believe this game was originally intended to be a Yoshi's Island puzzle game at one point and was just re-swap for Lips and gang to be Panel de Pon for the Japan audience but then got swap back to the Yoshi's Island theme for NA. It makes no sense for those SMB3 hills with eyes to be there in Panel de Pon if this wasn't intended to be a Mario/Yoshi related game in the first place.
I agree with the handheld versions being too small, the original field was around was 6x12 field, while the gameboy reduced to to something like 6x10 or 6x9.
1 year later, I now have all 3 Puyo Puyo titles for SFC, as well as Panel de Pon (still don't have the 2 Nazo Puyo Puyo games yet). Puyo Puyo Tsuu Remix boxed and complete was the last Puyo Puyo regular series version I needed, got that same time as Panel de Pon.
Cordelia had different battle and "danger" music, while they reused Thanos' music for Bowser. Cordelia's music is the ONLY reason I prefer PDP over TA.
Also, Animal Crossing: New Leaf has a Puzzle League (Panel de Pon) mode if you scan an amiibo with Wisp and buy the 3DS at the campsite, and then interact with it in your house. Even has a campaign and everything. Would be good to see it released as an eShop title, but it's a cool little feature nonetheless.
Reason why the Option was remove in Panel de Pon is this, the Option menu had a CPU Mode where player could switch on the CPU to play for them in Single Player, this CPU could be set at any level and upon beating Vs. or Stage Clear mode players could easily rack up password and beat the game by cheating using those passwords. This was true when you're playing Tetris Attack as I had try using the CPU option to rack up password back when I still play the game. The Option menu is basically a cheat menu, it was the right thing for Intelligent Systems to block it in Panel de Pon.
I love Panel De Pon I wish they'd make sequels for it. My cousin and I play it together every week. The game is so addicting. The US version looks fun I hope they release it on the Switch too.
USA why are you ripping off Japanese title here's the list that you copied. 1. Doki Doki Panic (FDS) > Super Mario Bros. 2 (NES/SNES). 2. Puyo Puyo (MSX2/Mega Drive) > Mean Bean Machine and Kirby's Avalanche. 3. Panel De Pon (Super Famicom) > Tetris Attack, Pokemon Puzzle League.
Dove600 what clones? It’s most of the time same company release the product just under a localized name. Don’t even bother to argue. I used to develop games in a Japanese company so it’s pointless to reply.
It makes a lot of sense but I still love the Yoshi version , I had the Yoshi version for years and years on a pirated disc in a market , there was a very long list of pirated games , the pirate version of Yoshi is my favorite
for me the most difference is the difficulty, the CPU make 5x 6x chain in Tetris Attack and more on Super hard (on stages 9-12), in Panel de pon CPU is only does combo, even in Super hard
You forgot one difference: The final boss on Panel de Pon has a completely different music (there's technically two final bosses: the one with the bowser stage decoration, and THEN Cordelia)
andrielisilien Yes it has. Nintendo and SEGA were too much of a pussy to port the actual games so they Americanized it to be safe. Nintendo screwed up badly themselves since they called the game Tetris Attack meaning unless they translated the original game, it's impossible for us to play Tetris attack
@@theobserver4214 Actually that's not the case, people weren't used to anime and Japanese source material so companies have to americanize games so audiences can understand.

@Catgamer 615 I agree :)
Timmy Menard ...that couldn't be further from the truth.
@Timmy Menard Actually, Nintendo was punished for their SNES port of Mortal Kombat.
Wow. My mom played the yoshi version and I grew up thinking this was a yoshi game. I knew the title name was weird. While I still love the version I grew up with, this panel de pon is genuinely cool. I have a whole new perspective on this game now
Came back here after Panel de Pon was released on the Switch :)
I like both versions to be honest. I want them both
Retroarch can you get started quite easily.(don't use ZSNES though)
It does very innacurate emulation(all games have bugs in them that are specific to ZSNES, the emulator was programmed to "patch" popular games silently to avoid it's own bugs/crashes). Also if you want to play 3DFX games on it will speed up the game screw with the music.
ZSNES didn't even get an update in 10 years and it's banned from speedrun websites because of it's innacuracy while bsnes does virtually perfect emulation and snes9x is very good too.
GnauraI SuperFX you mean.
3DFX is a PC API
Fun Fact: Yoshi no Panepon's Satellaview release was made to commemorate the release of the Game boy version
Timmy Menard I would totally buy that.
Timmy Menard I think that'd piss off a lot of people. Let's not do that.
Timmy Menard We do not need pony crap

Cool to hear that you’re coming back. Good luck!
Panel de Pon on a plane? Now that's a luxurious flight.
Yeah! It was on Singapore Airlines back in 2004 - such an amazing experience and one of the rare times I didn't care how long the flight was!
Press Select Shan wish they'd put them on the eshop
Yeah I once traveled on a plane with SNES games. That was so cool. Makes me wonder if they had a proper agreement with Nintendo though...
@@joshkall5103 And that is the last anyone has ever heard of him.
Based Embryo Yeah, because she isn't in a robot suit the whole time.
Pierce Gossett And because she's a badass. Panel De Pon would be quite the gamble due to the Japanese style, and the fact your main character is a cutesy fairy
Pierce Gossett yeah because there isnt a reward of seeing her take off her helmet for a successful speed run, you sure are witty and not flawed
Pierce Gossett she didnt take off her helmet on a planet with no breathable atmosphere for humans or while fighting creatures, sexist amirite
*bashes head in with a hammer* because real logic is make believe
4:03 That "monkey" is named Ukiki.
there was also a GBA version called "puzzle league" that came bundled with dr mario on the same cartridge
there's ALSO puzzle league express for dsiware
bhyper it was for the DS.. Not gba. It's one of my favorite games
Lip has finally left the East! Panel De Pon is now on Switch Online! ^_^ YATA!
for the stage around 6:16
didn't they take the line blocks from Panel De Pon and use them for Kirby's rock formations in Smash Bros? It looks awfully familiar XD
Yes.
Yes, it's an intentional reference to this game.
2:55 That's not Selene's voice. That's Lip saying "Stop" in Japanese. Selene's voice sounds just like Cordelia's, only higher-pitched.
Danielle Bowden (I know it's been more than a year, but that's actually tokei-kun (Mr. clock)'s voice.)
I was going to say "Where's the ojou-sama laugh?" Selene was my favorite because of the laugh
4:04: Also, look at the waterdrop at the top left.
I'm here thanks to Shesez. Subscribing for new content and to catch up on your past videos. Looking forward to it!
When I was young I had an English SNES but my Japanese grandad bought me a Japanese adapter for it, so grew up playing panel de Pon, sim city, Kirby golf course etc in Japanese, could not understand a thing but still loved it
Was your grandfather a j/aps army that slaughtered Asians?
Some of the differences in Tetris Attack seem like patches to Panel de Pon, like the restored Options menu and added victory theme for VS. mode.
Nintendo finally brought Panel de Pon in its original form to the West via Nintendo Switch Online, so that's really cool.
Came to this video because Panel de Pon just came to the Switch Online SNES library.
1:56 "When flowers bloom, the power of fairies works..."
Where have you gone?... there are soooooo many other games with region differences that need you to review them!

I'm glad we got the Tetris Attack version. I think it's an underrated game on the SNES.
bezoticallyyours83 Panel De Pon is the same game but actually original. It doesn't rely on Yoshi and Mario themes to sell it, it did its own thing, and did it well.
Can't wait for your next video, man! Welcome back.
@@AJR-zg2py That's nice to hear, and I'm sorry to hear about your mother.
I prefer the Tetris Attack Version mostly because I had it as a kid on my SNES. One of my all time favorites
2:54 Wrong sound effect on Selene
Missed opportunity to put this game on the SNES Classic, however it’s on the the Super Famicom Classic. The SNES Classic has no puzzle game or Beat’em ups which is desperately needed to make it more worth having.
Brandon Williams you could hack it, but I want to keep mine unhacked
Panel de pon has finally been added to the Nintendo switch!!! 🤗
0:14 Me looking at the game at the pawn shop with my dad
Speaking of 6:19, in the Super Smash Bros series, starting with Melee, there are five (six in Super Smash Bros Ultimate) stones Kirby can turn into to for his Down Special. Lip’s junk block is one of them.
Last news the Japan version has just been released on the Nintendo switch
Does anybody know why he stopped uploading?
Please come back...
one extra difference: Japanese version is harder than american version
Raul Neozero Strange considering Streets of Rage added bullshit for the US versions
Wow, thank you for making this video! It's awesome!
Wish they added the yoshi version on switch or translated panel de pon, still love the visuals and soundtrack to both tho!
It's been over two years now where are the new videos?
Where have you gone!?
Making these videos must be a huge pain in the ass, but they are fun to watch
Horror Jervil Too bad he never made any videos ever since this one.
The next video he's making must be an even bigger pain in the butt.
Hey, this is Pokemon Puzzle Challenge!
I agree with the handheld versions being too small, the original field was around was 6x12 field, while the gameboy reduced to to something like 6x10 or 6x9.
I think it's 6x9. Those 3 extra rows really make all the difference.
Panel de pon finally came to America
plez come back
I have Tetris Attack, but I also want Panel de Pon. I did the same thing with Kirby's Avalanche, bought the Japanese Super Puyo Puyo for SFC.
The other Puyo games are great too, you should try em.
Bloodreign1 Super Puyo Puyo suffers from slightly different colors and stretched sprites that look weird. Puyo Puyo CD's better
HaxorViper, I have a lot of other Puyo Puyo games, over a few consoles.
COME BACK
R.I.P Josh :/
4:07 - That woolly crab is called a 'Claw-Daddy'.
Heard that from Yoshi's Woolly World.
8:15 Satellaview BS-X Version?
And it made it intoAnimal Crossing: New Leaf via an update soon after this video came out!
Great vid. I'd say that the "options" menu is simple a cheat/dev menu. ...which is probly why it wasn't functional in the other version.
You forgot to mention the later puzzles are different.
Why did I barely find this channel and why hasn't it updated in a year
I swear all these kind of channels slowly fade away
Cordelia had different battle and "danger" music, while they reused Thanos' music for Bowser. Cordelia's music is the ONLY reason I prefer PDP over TA.
Thanos?
Also, Animal Crossing: New Leaf has a Puzzle League (Panel de Pon) mode if you scan an amiibo with Wisp and buy the 3DS at the campsite, and then interact with it in your house. Even has a campaign and everything. Would be good to see it released as an eShop title, but it's a cool little feature nonetheless.
status report: he is still dead
Status Report 2: Will he ever be back?
Reason why the Option was remove in Panel de Pon is this, the Option menu had a CPU Mode where player could switch on the CPU to play for them in Single Player, this CPU could be set at any level and upon beating Vs. or Stage Clear mode players could easily rack up password and beat the game by cheating using those passwords. This was true when you're playing Tetris Attack as I had try using the CPU option to rack up password back when I still play the game. The Option menu is basically a cheat menu, it was the right thing for Intelligent Systems to block it in Panel de Pon.
I could listen to your voice all day. It's lovely.
Why hasn’t he uploaded a video
I really wish you would make more of these!
Is this a joke or do you not know the changes are made by the same devs.
EWOODJ just ignore its obvious titles need to be localized.
Old comment but yes they're clones.
Dove600 what clones? It’s most of the time same company release the product just under a localized name. Don’t even bother to argue. I used to develop games in a Japanese company so it’s pointless to reply.
@@UmiTheAra They are localizations, not clones. Unless this is a joke, then it's ok.

Wanna do Version Difference video of Panel de Pon Gamecube and Pokemon Puzzle League?
It makes a lot of sense but I still love the Yoshi version , I had the Yoshi version for years and years on a pirated disc in a market , there was a very long list of pirated games , the pirate version of Yoshi is my favorite
I know this video is kinda old, but you mixed up Seren's sound effect with the stop time sound effect
You can unlock a version of Panel De Pon for the Game Boy Color using a cheat code in the GBC version of Pokemon Puzzle League.
for me the most difference is the difficulty, the CPU make 5x 6x chain in Tetris Attack and more on Super hard (on stages 9-12), in Panel de pon CPU is only does combo, even in Super hard
You forgot one difference: The final boss on Panel de Pon has a completely different music (there's technically two final bosses: the one with the bowser stage decoration, and THEN Cordelia)
Awesome video!
*GASP* My life has been a LIE!!!
andrielisilien Yes it has.
