That's pretty cool, but I don't think the turtles are the remains of the body since their bodies still exist within the "real" world (when they were drowning and then pulled out of the water). I think the trees themselfs are the souls transformed, and the turtles are the sins of the soul that were left to wonder that reality. Hence there are so many of them, for each soul there can be many turtles.
I always thought that it was kind of like a reference to the fact that they fell into a lake before they fell into the unknown, certain turtle species live in lakes and some of them are very dark coloured for camophlage on the lakebed, maybe Wirt saw one as he was blacking out and it just kind of got tucked away into his subconcious and kind of poped up now and again.
Maybe the turtles are made out of the Edelwood oil. Explaining why they appear near the trees and also why the dog looked similar to the beast when ingesting one.

And if that story hadn’t been kept alive, I may have never found out about this show, since I only first saw it last summer. Anyway, keep up the good work. Maybe if you have time you could compile several theories together to try and reach a conclusion based on the most present/consistent data? Sorry for the long comment too 😅
I just came from another channel Art Explained and it talked about Bosch's painting The Garden of Earthly Delights. In it, black reptiles symbolize sin or evil, and it's likely not a coincidence they mentioned that the black turtles may represent the ever-presence of evil in the Unknown, and that the creators may have looked up famous art pieces for more inspiration.
something I noticed watching this is that Auntie Whisper's mouth is completely black, whereas the rest of her (other than her cloak) doesnt have much evidence as to why... except it's easy! eat a cake with black frosting and your teeth and tongue turn black! (trust me, I know, and it's a huge pain in the backside to get off) since she eats turtles all the time and something tells me she doesn't brush her teeth all the time, her mouth is black because the sticky turtles are dyeing her mouth! a little thing I just realized :)

i imagine the turtles as maybe being like little spirits that spawn in the wake of the beast. it would explain why the dogs and the beasts eyes match after the dog eats a turtle.
I like the idea that the beast consumes the innocent essence of the children, burns it up to perpetuate his own wicked existence, leaving the sin behind. But this is the sin of children; harmless, unimposing. Little harm comes from the turtles, yet they are sin, so when Whispers and the dog take them in they are affected. Whispers, a character who cares for a child of her own, takes it in stride, whilst the dog cannot. It was left abandoned when it's own child companion, Beatrice, committed sin, so I guess that kind of explains it.
Has anyone else noticed how the tree at 2:43 resembles and looks just the the Beast when is is revealed what it looks like at the end of the series? I kind of viewed them like I do rats or pigeons. They're just animals trying to survive, but their presence alone causes misfortune in some form.
i know this is a crazy theory, but what if the turtles are somehow the beast or his minions? think about it. the dog has the same eyes as the beast when he swallows the turtle. when the turtle appears later on in the miniseries near the woodsman, the beast appears soon after. Sorry, I think I did see that comment, but I wanted to stick to canon sources for this vid. (Jim Campbell's blog post was what gave me the idea, tbh.) I do plan to make another video about you guys' theories in the future and might include it then!
I think they're some sort of remnant of the Adelwood (which I can't spell) trees creation and Auntie Whispers somehow avenges the lost soul. Perhaps they contain a part of the Beast, and killing them harms the beast. Perhaps the Beast was attempting to make himself immortal through implanting parts of his "soul" into the turtles. The dog may have been corrupted by the Beasts power, mutating it. Auntie Whispers is killing the turtles, not just eating the alive, so the effects are lessened.
The band Wirt likes, the black turtles, is directly correlated with why there are turtles there in the first place. Since it's a purgatory type setting it would make sense for his subconscious to manifest there in some way.
Don't turtles or tortoises live for a very long time? Maybe the turtles were supposed to play around with the whole life and death theme OTGW had? Or maybe it's just the makers of the show just messing with us! :D

If that's the case, maybe the turtles are the souls (or sins) of people who were not captured by the Beast? Not malevolent, but you wouldn't want the world overflowing with them either.

I had thought the turtles were souls of babies who were either unborn yet or unbaptized. I remember playing the Dante's Inferno game which this show is based on the book and the babies who are unbaptized go to hell. Which makes it more messed up to me that Auntie Whispers eats one of the turtles

The shell of the turtle represents sins since they always carry it on their back. That's how Auntie Whispers manages to eat them without transforming.

What a coincidence this comes out after I commented on the last video that I think the turtles are covered in oil, which is effecting the local life.
