Wonderful guy. I remember after a Mechanics gig in 1989, I hung around waiting for Mike to leave wanting an autograph. He drove past us and then suddenly stopped 100 yards on, got out of his car and signed everything we threw at him. His wife was lovely too willing to chat. A very English man with that old fashioned Englishness about him. I love it.
I also found out that he's a very kind hearted man too.
Lucky you. I waited somewhere in the seventies behind the Groenoordhallen in Leiden in Holland after a concert of Genesis. But when they really left the building there in blue bathropes, I was too surprised to fetch my stuff to get it signed and they were walking 3 meters distance. So stupid of me....
He is! Tony is very English proper also
My god, an intelligent interviewer that’s done their homework. Wonderful!
Listening to his first album "Smallcreeps Day" ...it's one of the most underrated albums of all time. Great interview Sarah.
I love that album.
I also liked his second album "acting very strange" from 1982. I like how he stepped up to provide lead vocals for the album. His vocals aren't that bad.
Both his solo albums were great. Most of those bass lines sound wonderful. Steve Hackett called up Mike to tell him how wonderful his first solo album was.
And also, one hell of a bass player. Sublime.
geraberl, hell of a guitarist as well!
So many great particularly original lines to be found way back in his bass playing catalogue,
very underappreciated.
Mike as ever charming & cool as a cucumber! A mountain of talent.
A wonderful interview. Great to hear an interviewer who has done background research, has come up with interesting questions and doesn't talk all over the interviewee. And Mike Rutherford is still the intelligent, affable, humble guy he always has been despite his Charterhouse education.
Such a great point so well stated. From his background it would be easy to be overblown and 'full of himself'. Such the opposite. So much more substance than given credit, in every way!
Saw him live last month, it was great, I was 5 metres away from the stage!
His music with genesis and also the mecanics is great.
Great Man, Great Mind and Great Music........thanks Mike
What a nice fellow - still grounded and humble.
Why, what else should they be?
@@paolocoletti1574 When you are THAT good, it is easy to get 'full of yourself'. They are all, including Peter and Steve, great people first and great musicians second.
@@rk41gator I don't know about that, he's always dissed Steve Hackett, and Steve has even addressed this in his bio from last year. Actually, Tony also wasn't happy with how MIKE R. portrayed him in his own book.
@@paolocoletti1574 yeah, i remember reading when steves book was released that there wasnt necessarily so much beef with steve and tony, but steve and mike. now that ive been back on the internet researching i havent found anything about that, not even the initial stuff i read last year. and honestly, the reviews havent been all that flattering for steves book, in that it sounds short and uninteresting, not that i can afford it anyway. the fripp story, new genesis stories, and solo stuff, life experience stuff im a fan of the guitarist so the reviews dont deter me obviously.
Pienamente d'accordo
Mike is excellent person. I always admired both Genesis and Mike and The Mechanics
His book is a joy to read. If you're into Genesis- well worth reading!!
Saw the Mechanics live with Carrack and Young on vocals years back. Both were extraordinarily good singers.Glad to see Mike has stayed grounded like Tony and Phil.
"The Living Years" lyrics are some of the best ever written. Just amazing.
King of lead guitar & bassist/tarus pedals for genesis & mechanics even Phil ❤️👑
Just finished the book today. Awesome!!
"I was too busy being successful" Great Line.
he looks funky! lets go mike!
Great Music and composer this Man!!!!
Gran tipo y humilde
Y gran musico
Would that be too much to ask to turn the intro/ outro down a bit? Mike is a very soft speaking person and so you have to turn the volume up a bit to hear what he says and then suddenly you get that big heavy guitar riff...
Glad you wrote that! I turned the volume down just in time!
j ai envie de savoir cette discusion de mike rutherford je l admire bcp il faut le sous titres en francais
She's such a babe....Mikes a great bloke...
sarah champion, chasing the memory of richie in a wig and make up away
Sarah: "Hey, hey, hey!! We're here with Mike Rutherford of Genesis fame! WOW! It's so great! My heart is beating in my ass I'm so excited! WHOOAA!!!"
Mike: ".....well, I'm here to talk about my new book. It's a story of fathers, growing old and of death. My generation had to experience all of that..."
Such a strange interview. One person if trying to sensationalize everything, and the other is reminiscing sweetly about his past.
Mientras más grande
Más humilde
Mike had a much needed fart @6:46
Along with Steve Hackett, the better part of Genesis...
They are ALL the better part of Genesis.
