    God they were so humble and grounded. The interviewer kept trying to hold them up to rich, arrogant, rock stars and failed miserably. What a great, talented, harmonious group of guys. It’s really too bad they only made one more record after this.

      Very true. Just got done watching a series of interviews with Lady Gaga. Proportional to her talent and especially relative to the talent of any one of these guys in Genesis, her remarks, attitude and demeanor were laughably unduly arrogant and totally uncalled for. After the 1980's, American pop culture started turning talentless nobodies and artistic underachievers into megastars. And our entire culture/politics/social fabric now is suffering for it.

    What a great interview. I had already been a huge fan in 1987, and found this to be a pretty fresh interview. I always knew they didn't do it just for the money, but it's nice to hear them admit it. Classy group of guys. I hope we'll at least get some kind of one-off studio recording from them at the very least...if they feel inclined.

      I haven't yet met a man who's really bored by Tony, I've read some Genesis fans who strangely have started blaming him for Gabriel's and Hackett's departure, but I'd say .

      Not as bad as not even being mentioned as a former member of the group, when the interviewer referred to the early Genesis era becoming a 3-some, "...and that's the story of Genesis, Peter Gabriel now doing his own thing" but no mention of Steve Hackett at all.
      Not such a good interviewer, focusing so much on the $$$ that Genesis is making rather than the music.

    I'm sorry but has anyone ever had the courage to honestly remove the naustolgic influence,and put the Beatles in the 70s and 80s,with all the group's, and than ask yourself how good we're they really,and is it surprising that a band that was the only ones around at the time,is the one influence for others,I'm not saying they weren't good, for the options, available at time

    • @sirpatrickspens
      @sirpatrickspens  Рік тому +2

      I’m not sure what you mean when you say “only ones around at the time”. The Beatles had hundreds of contemporaries, yet they produced a sound that had never been heard before and continued to do so throughout their brief career.

  • @Seb_Sebastian
    @Seb_Sebastian 3 роки тому +8

    I can understand that the Beatles were inspiring young people in the 1960’s. But for me it sounds strange because The Beatles made such a boring music compare to the Genesis compositions (Peter Gabriel or Phil Collins era).

    • @AngusRockford
      @AngusRockford 3 роки тому +4

      I think I've read Peter having said that Stax and Motown were more influential on him. I think he was playing drums in the late 60s, pre-Genesis. It's somewhat hard to detect in his music, but things like "Sledgehammer" and "Steam" do have a little of that feeling. He also used to cover "Ain't That Peculiar" (Marvin Gaye) in concert. As for the band itself, on some bootlegs from early 70s sessions, they cover the Kinks. I think maybe some Stones and Beatles too, but it's been years since I listened to those. Also, at Knebworth in '90, Tony, Phil, and Mike did a "Turn it On Again" medley which included a bunch of old 60s soul songs, plus "Pinball Wizard" and "Satisfaction." They were obviously big fans of the major rock & soul groups that preceded them. Phil called Pete Townshend after Keith Moon died to volunteer to drum for the Who, and this was at the time when Genesis were really on the rise commercially. Phil also played Keith's "Uncle Ernie" role in some of the Who's 1989 Tommy performances, and famously sat in with Led Zeppelin at Live Aid in Philly.

      Scott Burns “a liberal lefty”? Good grief. What a ridiculous cliched comment. It was the 80s. Thatcher was in government, it was completely the opposite of what you’ve said. It was an era of “I’m going to make loads of money” and screw everyone else. His comments were fuelled by the 80s obsession with adoring anyone with money. And look where that’s got us.

      @@sirpatrickspensSeriously? So, they started out with nothing, travelled 1000s of miles to play for peanuts, while working their tails off, and eventually it pays off, you believe that they didn't deserve the money they made? What, take it away from them? Yeah that's liberalism. Jealous people who don't want to work for anything, but feel they're entitled to everything. They went after their dreams and they made it. You don't punish people for that

      @sirpatrickspens  4 роки тому +17

      Scott Burns I’ll say it again ... “good grief”. You snowflakes just interpret comments in the way you want to read them. No, that’s not what I’m saying. What I’m saying is that it was the 80s and Mike Smith was pampering to his audience who at that time were obsessed with money. The UK had come out of the economically depressed 70s and was at the height of Thatcher’s “loadsamoney” era. I’m giving you an answer to your initial question.

      @@sirpatrickspens Curious interview. I think I remember watching it. I was a huge fan back then, although as with now, it was the Gabriel era material which drew me most. I agree with your analysis of its context. This was a U.K. daily chat show that went out on the BBC at around 7pm. Millions would have watched it. Thatcher was at the peak of her popularity having stormed the election of that year with a huge majority in parliament. Her brand of populist monetarist economics sought to roll back the state and create a nation of home-owning, share-holding quasi-entrepreneurs. Popular culture was all about acquisition, conspicuous wealth/glamour and how you defined yourself according to your bank balance. It’s quite astonishing how much that narrative had worked it’s way down to the list of questions posed on a prime time chat show. It looks quite awkward now but they seemed happy to bat it all away. Thanks for the memory!
