I was surprised to see Blankets here. I read Blankets as a teenager, in high school, back in 2013. It stuck with me because of how real and tender it was. It is about a teen boy going through love and struggling with hardships related to extreme Evangelical Christianity. Raised in a similar environment, it made me feel there were other people like me out there as well. I suspect the main reason it's being banned is that it touches on religion as well. These people don't want kids questioning anything about religion.
I don't think anyone but me borrowed it from the library at the time. It has a bit of depictions of sexuality, but nothing I didn't know already. Kids deserve to have the freedom to access these works of art, respecting their age, of course, but still.

Refering to this children's book as pornography is a pretty big thing to say, especially towards the author. Anyone who speaks out against books like this by using such words should at least come with a clear explanation and examples what's so pornographic about it.
It's also troubling how the word 'pornographic' which has been and still is quite negative and sensitive in the West has its meaning extented to refer to sexual content in general as pornographic, rather than sexual content that has the apparent purpose to arouse the reader, which is the traditional and conventional definition of the word. Is the word pornographic like 'groomer' used on purpose as a lazy way to damage people? Being critical is fine but character assassination (from any side) is not. Of course a prince and princess kissing wouldn't fall under 'pornographic'!

There was one section of the book detailing how they were masturbating into a bottle with graphic detail, that's totally bizarre material for the age group this book is targeting.

Maybe a video on a book that has been dominant in schools in such, with heavily influenced white/cis narratives and hasn’t been banned, for example the book “Tess of the D’Urbervilles” I had to read that in lit class in 2018 and there was no debate of whether or not we can read blatant rape and assault scenes, and talking about what brings a group or board to allow books like these in the name of “education” and not books like flamer which actually benefit the students and their character (sorry if this makes no sense just like an opposite video would be good)

No actually I think this a good idea I just don’t know how to phrase it, like analyzing the extremism present in commonly read books that haven’t been challenged like I mentioned before, talked about against a book like flamer or genderqueer that are immediately slammed as pornographic

I would suggest you read the book All Boys Aren't Blue by George Johnson. Its a memoir talking about the creator's experience being a black queer person. Its also one of the most banned books in America. its a novel, not a graphic novel, so it may take a bit longer to read than the last two banned books you talked about but I would highly recommend it.

So I'm not LGBTQ+. But I can absolutely testify to the power of finding a book that helps you feel a bit more normal and not alone. I grew up with a weird not widely known eating disorder that caused a lot of problems for me, internally and externally (not health wise but how people treated me) and not having seen or met anyone else who was the same and being endlessly mocked and harassed for it made me feel like there was something wrong with me. Then as an adult I managed to find a single book about a teens struggle with that same disorder and it made me feel so validated knowing I wasn't the only one, now I knew there were others who experienced the exact same thing.
I think people who have never felt isolated, unseen, or judged (directly or indirectly) for being "different" simply can't understand how profound it can be to see/hear/read about someone's experience that so closely matches your own. It's so important, particularly for children, to know there's nothing "wrong" with you just because there's something about you that's different from the image society feeds to us about what a "normal" person is. It's so disheartening to see children being robbed of these opportunities to see themselves as people who are deserving of love and acceptance just as they are, and that they're aren't alone.

Ok. Internet? Barnes and Noble? Kids today aren’t grasping basics of math, science or history. What educational benefit does this have? Kids are malleable. Look at the extreme increase of kids claiming to be gay since it’s been pushed as hip. The books are not being made illegal. If you want them, buy them for your own kids for your house. You can listen to this guy’s excuses and sugar coatings. Lol he compares not returning a book to being democratic .. wow.

      @desmondscalaro3669 4 місяці тому

Also, if a book is going to make you gay, chances are you were already LGBTQ to begin with and it was a book that validated who you are and made you ok that you have an attraction to the same gender if you were a boy who had a crush on another boy or a girl who likes a girl and nothing being sexual about it

I love how they throw out M.A.P as a catchall because they see it as an indefensible. fact and it most definitely is designed to divert the discussion from what it is: their bigotry.. I'm honestly glad books like flamer exist when I was a 16 year old bisexual black teen and back in the day.
And coming to terms with the fact that I'm bisexual it took me a long time to love myself and love being the bisexual man I am rather than trying to force myself to struggle against my nature in a futile attempt to try to become this heterosexual caricature of myself that I thought everyone else wanted me to be.
if I had a book like flamer available to me back then I would've had an easy time coming to terms with and accepting myself as a bisexual person now as a bisexual man in my 40s , I'm glad more LGBTQ+ themed literature is out there so no one has to experience what bigotry bi erasure biphobia and homophobia I had to experience and hopefully no other LGBTQ+ youths will have to have to conquer the same mountain that is the internalized biphobia and homophobia that it took me years to overcome as an adult.
I'm glad more lgbtq+ writers write queer fiction not for adults already secure and comfortable with their natural sexual orientation but even writing stores to help queer still coming to terms with realizing they aren't heterosexual and having to come to terms with knowing and accepting that they a part of the LGBTQ+ community .
I'm glad that now I can accept that I'm bisexual and that I'm not straight.

I agree with Mike Curato that this book needed to be written in order to help save lives.
I bet most of the people that want books like this banned are ok with the unadulterated "Holy Bible" being in libraries?
It's ironic that many children are introduced to a censored, child-friendly version of the bible. Those versions have cherry-picked stories which don't include those depicting graphic violence, sexual behavior or inuindo and any other objectionable material that would otherwise make it subject to being banned.

I am so annoyed at the fact that in this world you guys think we gotta be in sides...
first of all, from the section that the woman of the video read (it was cut and then i searched it up just to make sure they were being stupid about wanting to ban it), i feel like there should really be something done in parts of the book... That scene she described was totally wild and i dont understand why someone would defend that being a thing for children to read...
i wish lgbtq+ people werent trying to defend it as a whole (i am lgbtq+ as well)
We should do the same thing we do to some other types of media, censoring! not outright banning! That would solve the problem so much better. There are good reasons to want to keep the themes that the book was trying to address.. but just because thats the case, and because your ideology suits you into that, doesnt mean you should defend something on its whole, not to accept criticism, offend the other side of the discussion.. gosh, people..
I dont say that to a specific side, but just in general. Lets be human. These people that were defending the removal of the book, they arent ALL bigots. Even if they were, that doesnt mean they would be wrong necessarily, too. Lets just think critically. Was the scene that the woman read kinda messed up? For me, I feel like yes. What do you guys think?

I wish the world wasn't divided into sides as well... but sometimes, you don't have a choice.
When one group makes it their goal to inflict cruelty on another group of people for no reason, of course the others are gonna respond. And then you can't just stand in the middle. That would be wrong. You have to do what you can to defend the victims.
The truth is, right now we don't live in a system where both sides have good points. We live in a world where one side is almost always telling the truth and fighting for empathy and freedom, while the other is acting sociopathically and selfishly, and they spew so many lies that it makes it look like they have good points.
In the end, we have no way to convince conservative lawmakers and donors, because they already know what they are doing is cruel. They have been planning these things for decades. They just don't care.
      I'm sorry.
