India's Thriving Scam Industry: Before You Call Tech Support | Undercover Asia | CNA Documentary

- We go deep into the vast world of India’s scam call centers, meeting those behind the deception and the new breed of international scambaiters who are trying to bring these scammers down.
After seven years of running tech support scams, ‘Leo’ has leveled up. He is now an entrepreneur or a scam call center consultant who sets up scamming outfits for those with money to invest. From hiring to hardware, he has it down to a science, especially on how long it will take to generate returns for the investors.
At the other end of the spectrum, we follow an Indian scambaiter ‘Sven’ as he investigates a local company that’s running a scam call center. The majority of their victims are English-speaking foreigners overseas. Through reverse tracking, he has managed to get into the company’s systems, securing access to their confidential files and real-time CCTV footage of scams taking place.
Will ‘Sven’ be able to find enough evidence to submit to the police and conduct a crackdown?

I am an Indian living abroad and get these calls as well. I have lost my Indian accent so these scammers don't realize they are talking to another Indian. I play along for a few minutes acting like I am a gullible foreigner and out of nowhere loudly start cursing them and their parents in very filthy Hindi. They always hang up in panic. Hopefully I have traumatized atleast a few of these scammers into quitting their job.
Do you know what is scary about these Indian call centres… it’s due to the fact they tried to gather information from you first and then sell you a product next time they call you. I had talk to one of the Indian scammer in the past and gave him a fake name and address. 2 weeks later, a different number had called me and say. Are you John smith? I’m like no, but I’m also like how did you know because I had given the other guy that fake name and you are someone different. Scary world we are living in…
😂👍
Please carry on your good work as we don’t know the language, thanks😊
Good work - Maa-Bahen kar do saalo ko !
I love it! 🤣🤣🤣
I got a call from an Indian call centre last week- I was asked to confirm my name- and I replied: S for Sugar, C for cat, A for alpha, M for Mike. The “call centre” staff screamed in shock SCAM! And immediately cut the call 😂
😂😂 good one

the indian govt promotes it.

Law and order are worse there even if any law would be enforced
Why would they care about victims who are not their citizens
The government is aware. They all just get paid big generous bribes
This should be shown on mainstream media channels all around the world.

The way that lady convinced herself she was not a criminal just because she convinced someone to give her the money instead of stealing it like a pickpocket... the mental gymnastics people go through to rationalize what they do and convince themselves they are 'better' than others. I think it comes from a deep sense of guilt and discomfort she is trying hard to suppress.
What goes round comes round. The deep sense of guilt is the beginning of the karmic process. This Indian lady and her compatriots should find out more what it means.

I had to rescue my sister from one of these scams because she called a number on her computer that claimed to be Microsoft. Some times i wonder why people think Microsoft would contact them because Samsung won't contact you to fix your TV.

Here in Australia, if we hear an Indian accent over the telephone, we straight up assume scam/scammer. It wouldn't surprise me if legitimate businesses in Australia try not to hire anyone of Indian heritage, just to get around that issue. So yeah, probably is damaging the Indian brand.

It has gotten so bad in Australia. Australians see every Indian as a scammer in our community. It's the perception that so many elderly in our community have been scammed. It's shameful.
To scam elderly is despicable and so disrespectful! It's bad enough to scam anyone much less a helpless person who is so honest they believe u......

People running these scams have lost their souls for money, and have fallen below the basic dignity expected from a human being. Most of their victims are retirees living on hard-earned limited money they worked for their entire lives and hoped to use during their last years. After losing this money some have to go back to work at the age of 70, 80, and even more and sometimes just go hungry, suffer, depressed, and die in pain. The system in the US is merciless if you don't have money so these people can't even imagine what they are doing to their victims in reality. I feel the government of India needs to wake up and create a task force to stop this. These fellow Indians must be making themselves and their parents proud by doing these heinous crimes against humanity and bringing shame to our nation...
They dont lost their retirement check, many 70 years old work because they can, of course sick people can't work but hearth people, can, retired because they want. Scammer dont get their pay check. Most old people are well educated, why they have be stupid to fall in scam? I understand people that use medication of drugs, but a health people is not like.
Scary thing is that in the UK, big companies like Argos and Vodaphone and Three mobile and even Aldi etc have call centres in India as it is cheap. Every time I ring up customer service and hear that accent, I am worried that it might be a scam. It's scary
customer service number provided by the official site is the only trusted source dont ever use any random number given online getting scammed out of a few bucks would be like a slap on the wrist in many cases

And told me I owe them a bunch of money, claiming I didn’t pay my bill. Called the real Three UK, and confirmed the phone number he used to call me isn’t from Three UK.
These companies should recruit the Malaysians because they speak better English than the Indians, are more polite and are paid no more than the Indians! Malaya was colonised by the British for 133 years. Every Malaysian speak excellent English with an English accent.
I'm living in Canada worked for a bank's call centre before. In general, employees with an indian accent tend to get more bad reviews from clients because the clients tend to put their guard up and be less cooperative the moment they hear the indian accent.
As soon as I hear the Indian accent I know I will not get my problem solved.
These scammers are giving decent and hardworking Indians all over the world a bad name.
If I have any business I must do with a call and a person with an Indian accent answers I immediately think of scammers.
Many years ago when Bell Canada first outsourced their call centres, you could choose the French language and get a Canadian. (You would apologize for selecting the incorrect language choice, the mostly bilingual French person would end up helping but then it was more about the Bell eliminating Canadian jobs for the less expensive Indian people)
A few years ago, when I heard the word "Kolkata", I used to think about Mother Teresa... now I can only think of scammers.
Unfortunately, every time I get a call and hear an Indian accent, I immediately hang up. Sorry for the legitimate hard working people of India, but I don't want to take any chances.

I get these calls semi-frequently and I love keeping them on the line for as long as possible acting as gullible as I can. It's just a drop in the bucket, but the more time they waste on people like me, the less time they get to victimize gullible people. They do seem to be getting more adept at figuring out when someone is on to them and they end the call. If I can waste 15 to 20 minutes of their time I consider it a small victory.
I'd do the same but I just haven't got the time to waste playing with scammers.
Yes, when I've got the time I do too. But the fun is going out of it because they are getting more awake to us scammer scammers! I say nothing, wait for them to speak first. They often hang up first.
@@petesmitt You don't need time, I had a scammer ask for me by name, I pretended to be my daughter and said I would go get " her" then I just left the phone while I fed my cats and made a cup of tea! Of course he gave up in the end but in the meantime life went on as usual for me. Very satisfying.😊

I'm in the US, people literally hang up on every person with an Indian accent even if they're not a scammer and work for a legitimate company. It's so sad that the Indian government and police just simply let it happen.
I live in Australia and get these scam calls often. The best way to stop these scams is to hang up the phone the moment you hear an Indian accent on the other end.
Good advice thanks
They always also use western names for first and last witch is unbelievable
Yup. That's what I do. This has had such traumatic effect on me that I never get irritated when I speak accented legitimate customer service reps.
That, or if you have some time to spare, come up with ideas without out personal info to waste some of the scammers time to reduce number of victims being scammed by a few.
If I lived in Australia I'd be more worried about non Indian scams.. Those ones really clean people out.. Run by call centers in south east Asia. Investment opportunities for instance.. Or Nigerian romance or other scams. If there's one "good" thing you can say about Indian scams.. Most of the time they are going for under 10k..thats not because they aren't greedy it's just because of the pragmatics of it.. Using gift cards for example naturally limits how much can be taken in one go.
As a victim of scam callers, this documentary resonated with me. Good to learn more about how these cold scammers work and the people fighting back. Good to learn about job scams where they pay people to do an interview and steal their money.
Thanks for shedding light on the loopholes in Indian law that allows these scammers to get away. Need for transnational collaboration of law enforcement authorities and companies. Laws may need updating.
Can I ask you something? Whats up with the unbelievable racism of Chinese and Asian folk in recent times? I swear before covid most Chinese and Asians were cool towards blacks. In business school two of my closest friends were Chinese, but now 99% of my encounter with Chinese and Asians here in the US are guaranteed to end up in an unfathomable display of disdain and hatred. When I walk by a Chinese male or female, especially female, she is bound to turn up her nose and even refuse to look my way. At least with Whites, there are a large section of their society who speak out against racism, with chinese/Asians the very few that do are 99% from the US/North America. What happened to you lot? The solution to this issue is for major tech companies to cancel their contracts with all call centers in India and move operations elsewhere. This would clearly indicate that individuals with Indian accents in these roles were the scammers.

She lied and manipulated a trusting person to pay money under false pretenses. That makes her worse than a garden variety thief, it makes her a liar and a thief.
And the Indian government is guilty of duplicity with their weak, ineffective laws dealing with scammers. That’s probably by design. They aren’t that interested when their citizens are scamming foreigners or perhaps they are receiving bribes and happy to allow it to continue.
I agree with your comments. I think these scam artists are delusional. It’s the mind of criminals really. The insane thing is America has enabled this. Do you remember Obama? He’s who changed immigration policies and made it easier for H1 visa for Indians. He is actually not very smart. He didn’t think enabling such corrupted people and country to latch on to the technologies of developed countries won’t have consequences. I’ve lived in India actually. Imagine companies building up factories there, while they can’t even build toilets yet and infrastructure. I can guarantee you they will steal patents and cause havocs in the world like this. When I was in college I took a small job through the university employment office to be an assistant to a couple who claimed the ran a small business. What they wanted me for was to be the fall person for insurance scams they were committing. I was to be the one inspecting their claims and signing that they were true and correct. The woman claimed to be blind due to some arc-welders blindness from driving in her car, but she was able to sit pouring over the fine print on those insurance policy documents by the hour. I lasted with them one whole day. Then I took another job as a waitress at a chain restaurant run as a franchise. No sooner than I got to my first shift, everyone I encountered said this couple hadn't paid anyone in months claiming they were having financial problems and that the money would be forthcoming. I turned them in because at that point I had nothing to lose. A few days later, they cleaned out the cash register, locked the doors and never returned. They were just stealing from the employees. You've got to be on top of things these days because the scams come in all sizes and flavors.
I live by this rule. Anytime ANYONE calls and asks me to confirm personal details I politely tell them I feel more comfortable calling back the company they claim to represent to the phone I have of that company.
I can answer “yes” of they provide the details but once they want ME to provide it, it’s a big red flag.
Sometimes confirming information could be suspicious too so be weary if someone is contacting you for something you did not originally request
I don't answer my phone and let them leave a voicemail. If it's legit they'll leave a msg and I can call them back. Otherwise, I don't bother.
These people have such thick accents I can't believe those on the other end don't recognize this.
I've been approached by one of these companies for a work-from-home job, as a tech support representative but they didn't tell me the company name. I refused since the recruiter told me that I would be given another name and have to speak fluently in English but in an American accent. I've already been warned by my brother about these companies which used to scam people in America. A few months later, I got to know that they had been nabbed by the local police with 43 employees including the Boss.
I totally agree that Indian government should take strict action against this. These crooked scammers are ruining India’ s reputation.

As a former IT worker in the states a big thank you for this informative documentary. I am now retired and every few days I get some of this crap thrown at me. However unlike many people here I know enough not to fall for any of it. I make it a practice to not give out my mobile phone number unless I know to whom it is going and I keep several email addresses including one that is just junk, which I give out when I don't want to be contacted. I did get a laugh from one Indian who mentioned bad accents. My favorite one was when I asked to who was speaking with and he says "Karl" so I ask "Karl" where he is from and he says Texas yeah, right! LOL But seriously great job on this I sure hope more people in the states take the time to view this as it could save a lot of money and heartbreak.

The cellphone providers here pretty much scam their customers too with gimmicks about rates, phones and promotions.
The reason we are dealing with this is the west has to do with corporate head quarters of many companies moved their call centres to India...
This was done to save money and every company with a call center moved in order to remain competitive.
Flash forward 30 years and these same people who once worked at a legitimate call center now have every person's file, address and phone number they ever entered into the system, and the knowledge on how to defraud you...
I am surprised there has yet to be a class action lawsuit against every last company that still uses these call centers today...visa, Mastercard, every major bank, cable companies, phone companies, and the list goes on and on...
Congress should be talking about this, and how the predatory behaviors of major corporations has led to a complete leak of private information, and is the direct result of poor choices made, that saw many jobs lost and many people defrauded...
Had they remained in north America, we wouldn't be dealing with Indian scam artists
A lot of the problems with scammers are caused by internet media companies who do not provide adequate means for their subscribers to contact them and discuss their problems. Customers are kept on hold for excessive lengths of time and calls are often terminated without the customer actually speaking to a person, this causes them to go on the internet in search of other ways to fix their problems leaving them exposed to the scammers.
VERY TRUE!
That is because no one cares.

And they can't basically, the scam industry exists as long as there are gullible idiots in a developed countries.
"We never choose this thing." The guy said. Did somebody or a group of people carried you by force to put you in your desk to Scam North Americans and other westerners? You chose to do it. On the other hand, it is understandable that in India, hundreds of applicants vie for a couple of job openings. India compete with China on armaments and this costs billions of dollars, while there's a mine gold of deep-seated poverty all over India despite its progress eliminating some of them. Still, poverty in India is the hardest to eradicate.
😊
Yeah, that’s the thing they feel entitled. Who do they think they are??
Law enforcement is really lagging behind in technology. If a scam advertisement happened on TV, the public, the police, and the congress will be all over it. But if the scam came from an email, text message, or fake website, it seems like the scammer is above the law and no one can do anything about it. It's the civilian vigilantes that have the passion and expertise to stop it.
An Indian, who lives abroad for several decades, goes to his native place on vacation, he falls a prey to some scam or other as the scammers dupe him thru' various tactics and melliflous talk and eventually he gives up the thought of returning for another vacation. His sympathy toward his countrymen even when they suffer in natural calamities vanishes. The current situation is totally in contrast to the earlier situation wherein there was honesty, love, affection and humanitarian consideration and this will certainly mar the country's reputation in the world outside, ultimately affecting the interests of its people. Whats really sad is that this is ruining the reputation of Indians to be hired in legitimate Tech companies. I work in recruiting and have seen first-hand that hiring managers for Customer Support and CS Engineering roles are more discriminatory against Indians. Not because they are less qualified than other job applicants (sometimes they are MORE qualified), but because they are seeing a high number of end-users hanging up on any support who have an Indian accent. Their customers will refuse to work with anyone who has an Indian accent and demand to speak with someone who doesn't, or the support calls will drag on much longer because people are afraid of being scammed they don't readily provide the details needed to diagnose issues and they'll deflect the conversation by demanding to know information about the support person instead - such as where they live in the US, what school they went to, who their manager is within the CS org, etc. So when hiring managers are considering if one candidate is going to efficiently resolve customer issues within their SLA's or if another candidate is going to end up lowering the entire departments turn-around times (even if it's not the candidates fault the end-user is discriminating against their accent) the hiring managers are more inclined to favor non-Indians.
@Mr.Beant but most CSE's we've hired started their careers in CS or IT, so what is your point? Are you saying you don't think they are both affected by discrimination? And our CSE's don't design anything, maybe in other companies they do but not in ours.
@Mr.Beant the team I work on only recruits for Customer Support Engineers btw, I don't personally recruit for any other kind of Engineer if that helps to clarify

Non-Indian hiring will not solve the problem, People in USA can not have everything. It does not matter where outsourcing industry goes; this problem will move along with it. Only way to solve this problem is to shift your focus from cheap operations to responsible operation. Companies in USA or Europe should set responsible salary parameters for call centers/tech support. It is very easy to resolve this issue in india, you need to ask for "form-16 and ITR report" of every employee in order to ensure that only genuine call centers survive and can get work from your company.

As someone who works for a legitimate call center. I'll have been receiving calls where the customer cries over the phone begging to get his money back. He wanted to surprise his family by finding them a home, but instead he got scammed and lost a huge amount of money and didn't know how to tell his family what just happened, and to make it worse his family's situation was bad and they couldn't afford to lose all that money.

I worked in a call room for two weeks in Boca Raton, Florida. I noticed the customer service lines didn't have anybody to answer it. So one day I talked to the customer who called she said that she was ripped off. My boss, Lenny had an excuse. Just a month ago, I had a call from Canada Revenue confirming my registration for GST/HST account as part of my BN. She was a genuine but she had a slight Indian accent. I was doubting her the whole time and was not even taking her seriously. At the end, all she was doing was verifying my account, so I did not hang up. But all this scam calls have done disservice to their own Indian citizens. Even if they are genuine, people will still have doubts. Thank you Indian scammers.
I worked for CRA they do not call they use mail so make sure you have a resident address here.
@@kaurmal8791 It was for Uber GST collecting account. She called me from a functioning landline. She had all the information like my address. Only reason was to confirm. Oh well, even if it was scam, I am ready to play along.
Disheartening to see some of these people don't even believe they are doing something wrong!
It's an amoral culture
Thank you to those working to stop the scammers.
Here in the U.K. governments here and worldwide should simply be banning companies from outsourcing calls or customer support/tech support outside the country at all, for any reason - if you are serving a U.K. customer base, you should only be legally allowed to have a call centre in the U.K. only
It will not happen because in Trump inauguration the biggest scammer of India Ambanis are invited who regularly scam Indian with their Geo telecommunicatio cell phone company, It will not happen as the next President of USA Trump himself is a big Scammer, taking the help of chapter 11 of bankruptcy scammed the banks of America and it will not happen the Banks are the biggest scammers of their clients as well.

@@RoYal-xz5ch not at all
It is not racism. It’s just being cautious. When you have an experience like this, you listen to your gut instincts and become very careful. It’s just a natural response of human beings.

Scammer payback
CBI and FBI should work on this together, case by case, to return all public's money, without interference of any pm or political parties.
Some top people would be involved in this.
