    End-of-week H/H match recap:
    ...
    Today's action:
Well, after winning $14,650, our defeated champion gets spun away (but not without one final Richard Dawson kiss) while a new champion prepares for her chance to win some big money.
Today's audience match question: "Wig ________" (I'm having a hard time coming up with three answers. Wig-wam and wig out are just about it for me. I'm curious to see what the poor third celeb manages to think of.)
The celebs: Richard (-wam), Charles (maker), and Patti (out -- read from a card Brett handed her) - Well, the celebs didn't do any better than I did at coming up with answers. Unfortunately, as is too often the case, Charles's suggestion is unlikely. I continue to believe that his sub-par audience match suggestions are part of the reason he gets chosen so infrequently for the H/H match, despite his stellar performance there...
    The choice: Wam
The answers: -let, -wag, -wam (Bluck! Lousy question, weak answers.)
Who will our new champion pick for the H/H match? Let's see, she called on Richard for the first suggestion and took his answer (and won $500). I'd be stunned if she chose anyone else. Oh, and if she does choose Richard, this will make three complete weeks of only Richard playing the H/H match...
    Yup.
    Today's H/H question: "Police _______"
"Man" - Simple, easy, common. (More common in 1976 than in 2023, though. Today Police Officer is likely the more common term.)
Richard writes immediately and it's a short answer. I'm 99% sure he wrote "man." Wait - he discards that card and quickly writes a longer answer on a new card! I watched the tape 4 times, and it seems like his final answer is 4 or 5 letters, with a round letter (C or O or A) in the middle. Hmm. Maybe this question isn't the cakewalk I thought it was.
The contestant has her answer ready for Gene: "Man." Despite several possibilities, I'm convinced this is the definitive answer.
Richard apologizes, saying he initially wrote "man" (as I had thought) but then he changed his answer to reflect the TV crime drama "Police Story" (1973-1977). This is one of the infrequent occasions when I think the contestant gave a better answer than Richard.
    No match today.
So we close out the week with 5 H/H matches: Richard 3/5
This is now the third all-Richard H/H week in a row. (A repeat of when we had three in a row back in episodes 606 through 620.)
When it's all Richard, it doesn't make for much excitement in the H/H stats. We are left with Patti at one for two in that department, and Jimmie with only one attempt (unsuccessful). Kate Jackson "retires" from Match Game '7x without ever having had a shot.
Looking ahead, we have another all-veteran panel next week:
--Our three regulars are present and accounted for.
--Semi-regular Fannie Flagg is back! She was last on 3 weeks ago, and over the course of Match Game '7x, she appears for 90 weeks total, more than any other celebrity except for our three regulars.
--Avery Schreiber returns for his sixth week (of 14 total). We last saw him in episodes 546-550. He's still a H/H virgin.
--And it's great to see leader board celebrity Jo Ann Pflug again! It seems like forever, because she hasn't shown up since 506-510. This however will be her 12th week of 14, so it's getting down to the wire for her to add to her (excellent) H/H stats! Note: Jo Ann graced that fourth seat back in episode #1, so she became part of Match Game history even before Brett, Charles, Betty, Fannie, and so many others!
Here's the updated leader board showing the 11 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy:
    Orson Bean - 100% (4 wins in 4 attempts).
    Gary Burghoff - 83.3% (5 wins in 6 attempts).
TIE: Jo Anne Worley - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts).
TIE: Joyce Bulifant - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts).
    Fannie - 52.6% (10 wins in 19 attempts).
    Betty - 50% (17 wins in 34 attempts).
    Charles - 47.7% (21 wins in 44 attempts).
Jo Ann Pflug - 44.4% (8 wins in 18 attempts).
    Richard - 41.0% (156 wins in 381 attempts).
    Brett - 38.5% (20 wins in 52 attempts).
    Bert Convy - 33.3% (5 wins in 15 attempts).
*These stats include every head-to-head match from episode 1 through 660, excluding the lost/missing/damaged episodes: 31, 32, 33, 311, 312, 313, 324, 325, and 645. (As per MatchGameProductions, these episodes "are nowhere to be found and also aren't in the Goodson/Todman Library. Sadly, looks like they are lost forever!")

Pretty quiet week this week with Richard winning the week for the regulars giving away 14,250 dollars in head to head and audience match matches with 14 matches. Kate and Jimmy tied for the semi regulars with 7 matches each. Brett gave away 500 dollars in an audience match match.

They had it at least as far back as the 1960s. In 1969, there was an episode of Bewitched where Samantha's cousin Serena went to a computer dating service: "Marriage Witch's Style".

@@sddwtbnofather There were more and more computers around throughout the 70s and early 80s. There were _not_ personal computers much. Larger corporations/businesses and universities had big mainframe computers with connected terminals/desktops in different offices and buildings (think of it as a local internet). They even had instant messaging from one terminal to another. The mainframe powered whichever kinds of software the institution wanted: word-processing, engineering (design), chemistry, graphic design, architecture, etc. Some of the new stuff was not that great, some was nearly miraculous, all of it was expensive.
There were also phone-line link-ups from a dedicated terminal to distant computers that had specialized information. Hospitals had terminals that linked to medical information database computers, for example. Later, this system of modems and info over phone lines became our in-home dial-up internet.
The internet didn't come out of nowhere. The knowledge and equipment for it was developed over a few decades.

Sad to see Velma go, she was fantastic! But she left with $14,000 dollars, and that's a life-changer, even after taxes. That would be, in today's dollars, about $140,000. But in 1976? I hope she finished her college degree, and bought a new car. Great contestant!
