The mainframe powered whichever kinds of software the institution wanted: word-processing, engineering (design), chemistry, graphic design, architecture, etc. Some of the new stuff was not that great, some was nearly miraculous, all of it was expensive. There were also phone-line link-ups from a dedicated terminal to distant computers that had specialized information. Hospitals had terminals that linked to medical information database computers, for example. Later, this system of modems and info over phone lines became our in-home dial-up internet. The internet didn't come out of nowhere. The knowledge and equipment for it was developed over a few decades.
