    About Me
    I run a small business called The Solent Boat Butler and spend my days repairing, maintaining and refitting sailing boats (often Contessa 32’s due to my long experience with them). I'm mostly in the central Solent area of the UK. Being a cruising and racing sailor with many thousands of inshore and offshore sea miles logged I like to think that I bring a great deal of real-world experience to my work and help many new (and not so new) boat owners to improve and maintain their boats. When I'm not fixing boats I also provide some own-boat sail training, help owners with deliveries, provide pre-purchase inspections and deliver consultancy services to those that are refitting their own boats for cruising or racing.

    The reason we find sanding and pressure washing so interesting to watch is that half of us wish we were the ones doing it and the other half thank God you’re the one doing it.

    Great video George remember “helping” Dad sand and anti foul the westerly centaur when dried out on shore ham mud, probably took mum a week to wash the clothes😊

    I prefer to watch sanding, verse pressure washing. To bad was not able to squeeze some in. But playing with acid that’s a close 2nd to sanding.

    Very informative, as always. I had no idea what a scrubbing grid was but now I know! Sort of like how wooden sailing warships would be beached so the crew could clean the copper sheathing on the bottom of the ship.

      @RefitandSail  Рік тому

      Yep, same sort of thing as careening a warship in the old days but we keep the boat upright.

    Bottom cleaning can be very satisfying. This was particularly satisfying since the bottom paint is in such nice condition. :)

      Yes the pressure washing is quite pleasing. If did a full osmosis treatment (gel peel, dry, relaminate, fill/fair, barrier coat) on this boat two years ago and it was lovely to see that after two years in the water she is still A1 perfect under water!

    • @RefitandSail

      Thank you, brick acid works fine, the stuff unused here is a little stronger but you need to be super careful not to get it in yourself or breather fumes so I don’t tell folks what it is. Brick acid safer!

    What a great resource these videos are. Andy's Boatworks is also good, but I find this much better, with more results. Working on these beautiful Contessa 32s helps too. Shame there aren't any around Australia -if anybody would like to sail one here id be happy to take it off your hands!.

      I have to clean similar featherstream prop plus shaft on my new boat for first time tomorrow. Is this just brick (hydrochloric) acid being used here, or some special concoction? I heard mention of wallpaper paste and acid mix to get it to stay put. Interested to know. Work smarter not harder!

    Beautiful boat!. Iv recently taken an interest in sailing after a weekend away learning to sail little lazers and I'm hooked. I'd love to see you do a video on a beginners guide to sailing, covering navigation, practical skills and purchasing you first sail boat.
    Question. Is 5k enough to purchase a reasonable first boat?
    Keep up the great work 👍🏼

    • @RefitandSail
      @RefitandSail  Рік тому

      Hi, yes there are plenty of smaller older boats around for 5k or less, perfect stater boats. It won’t be the latest and greatest but perfect for stating out and if you add a few dings and scratches well it’s and old boat so no one is going to worry too much. There are lots of channels. With vids as you have requested so I don’t currently have any plans for “stating sailing” vids but maybe some time in the future, who knows…

      No, very little space to fit one on a co32 but with the prop in the aperture there is a Skeg that seems to stop a lot of stuff getting caught on the prop.
