Strongest Steering Upgrade for OBS Chevy Trucks and Accidental Suspension Rebuild

  • This time in the AutoEdits garage we dig back in on the 1995 Chevy Tahoe OBS truck project and install the strongest steering components I've ever seen... the Kryptonite Death Grip center link, tie rods and pitman arm!
    kryptoniteproducts.com/collec...
    I'll also catch you up on all the other things that ended up getting done on the rig after suffering a severe case of "While I'm here... I might as well fix this other stuff" syndrome.
    Let me know in the comments if that ever happens to you!
    The Tahoe basically got a complete front suspension and steering system overhaul.
    I also installed an inexpensive 2" lift kit.
    Here's a link to the AutoEdits Amazon store with many of the items I highlight in the video:

    Thanks so much for watching, please consider hitting the like button and subscribing!

    “While I’m here” led me to multiple, way over the top rebuilds on multiple vehicles. My leveling my 2016 Ram ended up with Bilstein 6112 struts, Mevotech lowers, Icon uppers, and a 3:21 to 3:92 front diff housing swap. In the rear I ended up with Bilstein 1” coils, Bilstein 5160s, Hellwig rear sway bar, Core 4x4 Tier 3 upper and lower control arms and AirLift rear air bags with a remote pump setup. Oh yea…. 3:92 gear swap and a Yukon posi to match the front.
    I won’t even talk about my LS swapped JK… 😳

    That's some serious steering Jason . I'm putting together some heavy duty steering form Metal Cloak for my Jeep TJ . I went thru some really bad death wobble in it the beginning of this year. So I have been putting together a bunch of parts for next springs tare down. So the while I'm here is, well might as well get new wheels ( Vision Manx ) , new wheel hubs , new ball joints , new steering gear box , new lift springs ( changing to metal cloak ) , new powerstop brakes , well you get the idea . Looking forward to your next video sir. Take care and be safe sir .

    I have a 2006 Mazda Speed 6 that needed a new CV axle in the front. I put it on jack stands and... "While I was there..." I noticed the driver's side upper control arms, ball joints, and sway bar end links needed to be replaced. This lead to a full suspension rebuild because the parts were exactly as you stated -just cheap enough to empty my pockets. In the end it was worth it, but I cried as I looked at the total. lol

    Yup, I think it's a good philosophy but I find I must moderate and prioritize kinda like the champagne tastes on a beer budget thing. Example, while installing Power Stop truck and tow brake kit I find DS rear axle seal leaking. Brain says while your in there now would be a good time for a locker and a re-gear. Budget says upgrade your axle shafts and call it a day. Chrome moly shafts should be here tomorrow. PEACE

    Hey man, I’m totally glad I came across your channel!
    Im super impressed with your suspension rebuild and would love to rebuild mine. I have a 99 Tahoe 4x4 and im wondering has anything really changed from the 95 and 99 Tahoe,? suspended wise?

    • @trailrunnah8886
      @trailrunnah8886 2 роки тому +2

      As far as I know, the only difference between the 95 and the 99, is that the 99 would have the electronic shift transfer case instead of a lever, and the "Vortec" 350 instead of TBI. Suspension should all be exactly the same.

      I forget, was 99 the last year of the GMT400 body style, or the first year of the GMT800? I feel like I've seen '99 400s, so maybe they even made them both at the same time?
      GMT400 would have leaves, 800 would have coils.

    Jason,
    What are your thoughts on leveling kits, like the one you installed, effecting the durability of the suspension parts/ roughening up the ride? From what I've read stock keys lift just as much, and both options add lots of strain to the vehicle.
    I'd love to be wrong, I'm just curious about what you've learned :)
    Thanks for your help!

    • @AutoEdits
      @AutoEdits  2 роки тому +1

      All good... we'll find out together. I'm not going for maximum lift with this setup... just 2" and some thoughtful dial in. Let's see how it goes.

    • @SamKissing
      @SamKissing 2 роки тому

      Its been about a month, how are you feeling about the torsion key lift? I ask b/c I'm considering the same for my 95 silverado and I'm curious if you'd do it again or go the rough country 4" lift route or something similar. Thanks!

    From what I can see, the location for tie rods and center link should be the same for the 2wd version as well. The 4x4 Kryptonite kit tie rod kit should also work for the 2wd. Tell me my logic is wrong? Looks exact too my 2wd, just with out the 4x4 stuff.

      Detroit axle has the upper control arm with new bushings and upper ball joint .

  • @Marcus_Woodard
    @Marcus_Woodard 2 роки тому

    The sloppy steering is probably mostly from the rag joint in the steering shaft. You should be able to upgrade to a u-joint style steering shaft.

    • @AutoEdits
      @AutoEdits  2 роки тому +1

      I actually replaced the rag joint and it wasn't that bad. The ball joints I show on the old stuff on the floor were a big reason and the steering box itself was very worn out.
