  • Orvieto, Italy- a Charming Hilltop Town! Located in Umbria Italy
Orvieto is located in the Umbria Region of Italy and was the perfect stop for us to explore as we traveled from Rome to Florence. Orvieto was the alternate offered to our tour group since the visit inside the colosseum was canceled. This town has so much to see I was disappointed we only had about 1-1/2 hour to roam the town. The Orvieto Cathedral: Duomo Di Orvieto was the most stunning cathedral I have ever seen!
Orvieto is one of the oldest inhabited areas in Italy dating back to the Etruscan civilization that settled here in the 9th century. I recently learned that there is a series of tunnels and caves all underneath Orvieto available for touring.

Video tip: when in Europe, set your iPhone camera settings to PAL format and you won’t see flickering lights everywhere. (50 frames per second or 25)

You guys should also check out my hometown, Todi! 45 minutes by car from Orvieto, not as big or accessible as Orvieto but it's definitely characteristic, almost entirely medieval, and on top of a hill as well.

The tour of the caves where pigeons were raised for emergency food stores was fascinating. My Italian grandfather would kill pigeons for food.

That has to be the biggest and most beautiful church I have ever seen. Too bad you ran out of time to see more. Italy is beautiful and haven’t been there since I was Rosalie’s age. Those alleys look like a movie scene. Thanks for taking us around.

You could have gone in the church. The guy was saying the ticket was to go up to the dome. The church is open I believe to all.

That is one picturesque town. 😮 Too bad about the church. Can't imagine what the inside looks like considering the outside.

Hi- can you tell me if I need to book my rapid trains ahead of time? I’m going to 12 cuties in 3 weeks. Can you help?

    • @SwiftyTravels
      @SwiftyTravels  9 місяців тому

That I’m not sure. We did not ride the trains. If you check the rest of the comments from this video there is someone who lives nearby- maybe you should ask them. I really like @romewise sa great resource- check out this video ua-cam.com/video/Di7JiiLDDPA/v-deo.htmlsi=PP4KPyuY84S3BVIo

@@SwiftyTravels Would you say Orvieto is nicer than Siena as a day trip from Florence? Thanks in advance for reply

@@Mongoose-ct6us I’m sorry we didn’t go to Siena either. I would recommend Orvieto or Assisi as a great day trip from Florence.

@@SwiftyTravels Excelente. Thank you. Been to Italy twice but never been to Florence or Orvieto. On my list. Sardinia and abruzzo look nice too

    • @FilippoCardoni

@@Mongoose-ct6us Florence is one of a kind thing but it's obviously much more touristy. I visited Siena only once so I can't vouch for it but it wasn't bad. However, I live in a small city 45 minutes by car from Orvieto, called Todi.
I would really recommend visiting Todi as well, it's smaller and has some accessibility problems (meaning, it's hard to find a parking lot that isn't full or free.. and it's on top of a hill, so you either use the public trasportation systems or go by foot) but it's characteristic, medieval, "authentic" italian vibe, amazing food.
The city centre is small so you can visit most of the stuff in less than a full day but there are many other small things to see around especially if you have a car.
So if you come by Orvieto, try to have a small step in Todi as well. Between Orvieto and Perugia I don't really know... surely Perugia is more known. I think they are equal but maybe Orvieto has a nicer aesthetic.
I would also mention Spoleto, another pretty beautiful city on a hill, not too far from Orvieto... or if you decide to stop by Todi you could also reach Monte castello di vibio, these two you can visit in half a day :)
