Great video bro! I wish I had seen this a few months ago. I spent time trying to learn Tyson's punching technique by watching him in slow mo and realized precisely what you said-but i describe like so- pivot the foot twist the hips and snap the shoulder together but delay the arm. By delaying the arm you get precisely the elastic response of the pecs. very well and concisely put.

Lol you guys are and I'll back him because first of all ur body mite as well be a rubber band ur flexible but never enough before you break what he said is true you do get freakish power with hooks like that I've broken ribs hitting like that and I'm not even big haha
Also... I ran a quick google search on "Nick Rewal Boxing".... and google has never heard of you. You've done a really good job of carving out an invisible niche for yourself. You'd figure with HUNDREDS of semi-pro (aka amateur) fights and your extensive knowledge that SOMEONE would have heard of you.... or said something about you... all those certifications have done a good job of making you not exist.
Ohhhhhh.... I see. So you WANT more friction with the ground then? Is that it? You want your steps to take more energy because they are dragged over a surface? That makes a lot of sense... Why would you EVER want your steps to be slower and require more energy??? Again, more stuff that someone said to you and you just blindly repeat instead of thinking for yourself. You probably teach people to pivot on their crosses. Do you pivot on a cross? Tell us nick...
I don't think our ligaments behave the same way as those bands. Potential energy isn't stored to that degree when we move our limbs far from equilibrium. The basic idea behind more impact force is to try generating more momentum in order to transfer that energy to the opponent.
My "kind" is that of someone who doesn't just spew the things he was taught in a course. I back up every technique I show, and everything that I teach. Me offering to accept you into my gym and put you to sleep is an exhibition of confidence... I will demonstrate on your head and body the efficacy of my teachings. I walk my talk... can you? We are in agreement on your breakdown of hook form, if you applied elastic recoil to that, you would have extra power.
This seems like a good technique, but the first thing that came to mind is that those few long seconds you spend winding up for the hook, your opponent will have time to straight punch you in the face at least once, maybe twice if he's quick. My old Karate 'sensei' used to make a joke that "while that thug is pulling back to swing at you, you'll have time to go home, have a drink, then come back and hit the guy before he's even finished reeling back" and it does make sense because hooks are only quick once they've gotten their full momentum. This is just Shotokan theory but I've heard a good few people say that hooks are dangerous to use because 1you have less accuracy, 2 you leave yourself wide open, 3 you give the other guy more time to react before your fist is even moving forward. However I've also heard hooks are best for knockouts because they're easier to connect with the jaw or temple. I guess you just have to be VERY careful with when & who you use them on.
***** "....If you watch street fights or MMA/UFC fights, you'll see how the theory of karate falls a bit flat..." Lyoto Machida, a Shotokan karate man has done quite well adhering to his original martial art at least for his stand up striking. His counter punching, kicking off blocks (Mark Munoz, Ryan Bader come to mind) really something to watch. Georges St-Pierre would be another one (Kyokushin kaikang) although both fighters evolved into well rounded fighters Karate is still a component of their fighting.
***** Well said. Wrestling wasn't really recognized as a martial art before the inception of MMA. Now it's seen as a vital component of unarmed combat.
It's called science, you fool. If you "regurgitate" science, you are educated. Did they teach you any kinesiology in your weekend trainer course? No? You get a job at Julia Roberts? Emulating the form of the best fighters in history is what people do when they want to improve. How about you come out here and get in the ring... we'll make a video and see what your course taught you. I bet you go to sleep, and I bet it's this exact hook that puts you there. What u think coach?
This is true, but it's an easy way to telegraph a strike and also should only be used if you know it's gonna land, as it will leave you off balance if missed.
It won't leave you off balance if you've practiced it like anything else. It adds a MILISECOND to your punch... if you've just slipped a jab and now you're counterpunching, it's perfect. Tyson punched like this... never really saw him off balance.
I make it a point to put my money where my mouth is any time someone makes a diminutive remark towards my videos. The elastic moment is exactly that... a moment... it is not a telegraph, and if you are not allowing your chest to stretch, you are losing power. It's science. Search Mike Tyson Destruction in Slow Motion... on almost every hook ( i like the one at 23 seconds) he is throwing his chest forward to build elasticity. As a student of fighting, u should have more respect than to...
After boxing and teaching boxing for 30 years your hook and body motion sucks. Hook power comes form the snap of the front knee and twist of the front foot that is where the twist starts...try it before you start shooting off you mouth. We are from Coatesville Pa. where many professional fighters came from.
That is a bold statement you made in regards to how to throw a hook with the snap of the front knee and twist of the foot considering hooks Mike Tyson throws his feet do not twist in fact they are very well planted. I am not real sure how people communicate there in PA however generally intelligent non egotistical people that correct people if they see they may be doing something incorrect teach them what they may know with a teacher / student type fashion. Next time you critique someone you may want to consider dropping your pompous attitude,,,,try it before you start shooting off your mouth.
No, he probably would have take klitschko down and done exactly the same thing... though let's be honest, that's not exactly an even size match up. Also, the ring had nothing to do with it. Randy hit him with a low single leg in the middle of the canvas. As soon as he was on the mat, he looked stupid. How does cage vs. ropes even come into play? Explain to me how the structure of the ring makes his statement any more valid.
Hey Gabe, completely false. You shouldn't throw non-stop massive hook haymakers, but the hook is by far the most powerful punch you can throw. EVERYTHING potentially leaves you open for something else... so it's important to attack in a safe manner no matter which strike you're throwing. Concepts like attack angles, attacking "off-the-line", and changing attack levels all will drastically lessen your chances of being countered. Go to my website if you want to learn this stuff!
Why not just couple that shoulder drop with a head movement that brings you in close, or a right straight that also brings your shoulder forward? You will absolutely lose power if you have less distance for your strike, that's just simple physics. You can make this work, you just have to do something to set it up... in most situations, a slip or a right punch will suffice.
James tony didn't get a "Title Shot". Dana White threw him in the ring to make boxing look foolish and even said something like "I don't think that anyone in the stadium was surprised." Boxing is a very specific skill, it is not comprehensive fighting... of course a boxer would beat an MMA guy in a boxing match... he would just lose in any other form of fighting.
I do... I've used it boxing gyms for more than a decade, and in my career as a professional MMA fighter. If you want, I will pay your travel expenses, and we can make a video where you show me how easy it is to dodge my telegraphed punch. I'll bet 500 dollars that you're sleeping in less than 5 minutes, and I'll give you 5 to 1 odds.
S H O O K. The grammar police is always around you can't escape from them. (Please dont correct my comment I swear if you do im just going to give up on life)
Interesting... so you're saying that Tyson didn't step in before he threw his hooks? He frequently JUMPED in... where were the knockouts? I usually do this as a counterpunch, or throw a right hand lead to load it up, but I'm more than happy to show you personally if you'd like to get in a ring and be in a video.
EVERYONE READ.....Great stuff. But isn't it crazy, we live in a world where videos on you tube clearly show...titles that start with "How to punch harder,,,,", "Prison fights"..."Mob Hits"...."man gets stabbed"..." Seagal's Aikido secrets"....How to break somebody's _____ "....all of these titles get views often in the hundreds of thousands or more. But titles dealing with helping people, and words like "volunteering",..."bringing peace to your city"..."being a good parent"....these titles get not 10% of what violence videos get. Does this truly mean that humans really have more interest in violence than anything else? I dont buy people do martial arts because they love it. If all of us knew we'd never get into a fight the rest of our lives...how many of us would train in martial arts? My teacher took that poll in class one day..not one student raised his hand.
I actually enjoy boxing, I feel it inside me just like I enjoy motocross, i am not watching this to learn how to defend myself from the world, but instead how to better myself at something that i enjoy doing. I don't go around asking for fights, if i fight i bring it to the ring where i know i'll be able to be safe and yet still do what i love to do
Yo Eleven Thats what my Glock is for. Good to see civilized people talking about violence. I almost cant handle it. 20 posts and nobody has called anyone a bitch or a pussy. Ahhhhhh, normal people still live! Awesome. LOL
That little douch already faded into nothingness. Actually exhibiting his "expertise" would force him to potentially disrupt the basis for his entire professional existance. People are much happier THINKING they know their shit than actually proving it... moreso to themselves than to others.
No, again, you're still talking. I said SHOW US SOMETHING, otherwise get the fuck off my channel. Words don't mean shit. I'll fold a bag in half with a hook for all of my students to see. You will get certifications and talk. Keep talking bro... no one's listening. SHOW US SOMETHING...
close your mind to something so useful, and so devastating. I bet your hooks aren't half of what they could be. Use a slip to load up the power and you have plenty of time to unwind. Try it and get back to me... I "try it" and have suceeded since 98, when I also started training.
Randy couture completely embarrased James Toney in a fight: "champ UFC vs champ boxer." It wasn't even close, in fact it was pathetic... so what are you talking about? The situation you're talking about already happened, and it ended with your sport looking tremendously stupid.
You sure you watched that video? Maybe you should watch it again. Looks like I distinctly step both feet. Are you just naming the mistakes that your semi pro trainees typically make. Show us something... otherwise, you are no one.
Yea, because when you learn how to unleash crazy power and you're unhittable, you can do whatever you want. This guy learned boxing from a text book, and now he thinks he has knowledge for the class.
It's actually perfectly seemless... there's no telegraph whatsoever. It looks as it it happens just as fast as a normal hook, you just don't flex your chest to make it happen.
Thanks bro... there is definitely a shameful amount of garbage out there in the "how to punch" and "how to fight" game. Intelligence is what helps you build real power... stay tuned.
Hell yea... I have a million of them on my website, and they're free. Specifically for drills go to How To Fight Now DOT com, Register for free, go to Free Videos -> Basics -> Drills for a knockout cross. It's right beneath the video about adding cross power using "maximum fiber recruitment". There are a ton of lessons on there, so have a look around!
The DESERT SHOWDOWN!?!?! Second PLACE!? This is a maximum power technique, you can see it used frequently if you search "mike tyson destruction in slow motion"... but that's just mike tyson.... he probably didn't even place in the desert showdown, so he probably couldn't touch you either..... unless he slipped in and closed distance as I recommend in every other lesson you haven't seen. I wish I could be under your tutelage, maybe I could lose in a boxing event that no one has ever heard of.
Sir! I've been having problems with my hooks for years!!! And I never knew what I was doing wrong! I did the right steps, pivoted on the feet, rotated the hip, relaxed the shoulders, etc. and my hooks weren't horrible, but they never popped. They were my weakest punches. That little detail of leading with the chest muscle and using the recoil was all that I was missing! I did some shadow boxing right after the video and tested it out on the heavy bag now and my hooks have double the power they had before! Thank you so so much!
Thanks for the positive feedback. It's not something I'd rush into, but I have women over 40 replicate this technique in my studio on a daily basis without injury.
I like your stuff Trav. I think, however, you over explain this. Maybe, just maybe, it's not able to be explained with out physical training. The power comes from the hips, and grounded feet. The rubber band effect is actually more like a towel snapping effect. If you are telling people to hyperextend like that they are going to do some damage to their joints, tendons, ligaments and muscles. Now, you're NOT telling people to hyperextend, you're telling them to snap their punches from their hips like they are snapping a towel. It LOOKS like you are telling people to hyperextend and I bet if people who haven't been properly trained tried your technique as it looks like its explained, they might hurt themselves. Just my thoughts. What say you?
this deff cleared up some things, glad to know the correct way for powerfull haymaker vs just swinging wildly hoping for the best and having disappointing results...
Since I've watched this video several times over a year ago, I have worked on this exact hook and being a skinny person, with four Kyokushin black belts by the way, my punch has become much stronger as well as faster. Thanks.
Has anyone been studying daily from the vids on his website and feel improvement? The paid or free site? I havent joined yet but I will make time soon and really pour into it.
well if you use another guy to demonstrate that would be better theory is never good. your head is not protected when you strike well hope to see other videos better than this one. thanks
So like I was watching fight videos and I was like .........oof ..... I need to learn how to fight just in case someone wants to fight me. So here i am.........you created a freaking monster ill try using this when the times right..*evil laugh* *hahaha....HAHAHA* *cough...cough* hold on let me take a sip of my *TEA* *popping mouth noise* ok bye
This is basically the best thing I've ever read. On another note, I've been into martial arts/MMA my entire life, and I love your videos, very informative and they really make fighting understandable. Do you think you could do something on how to train yourself to not blink when someone else throws a punch, and how to forecast what types of punches a person will throw?
excellent analogy and explanation of how to throw the correct hook. Only problem is that this guy doesn't get his elbow high enough to be in line to follow his fist. On the point of impact the elbow needs to be in line with the fist to be able to transfer as much of your body weight as possible to maximize the power of the punch. Great explanation with the elastic band otherwise tho, perfect for those trying to understand the biology behind the hook!
I swear I knew this from just watching boxing!! Don't get me wrong, I NEVER HAVE GOT IN A FIGHT AND IM NOT SAYING I CAN FIGHT, but I am obsessed with boxing and I always noticed this shoulder popping thing boxers would do while shadow boxing. So I actually learned to di it and it I know throw uppercuts and hooks with this elastic recoil and my punches feel crisp, snappy, and STRONG!! And also it keeps your balance better too
Idk why most of y'all talk smack about this mans technique. A lot of it makes sense. I like this guy. He teaches us. Its our job to perfect it and work on speed. Great teacher. That's why I follow him on UA-cam. I bet he would kick our ass in a street fight. But I'm ready lol. I'd rather be slow and throw punches the right way than to be fast and throw punches that have no effect. Keep up the good work. 👊🏾💥💪🏾
I will say this once; If you want to know how to throw proper punches, with the most power, western boxing is the BEST to obtain this. This is why Sijo Lee studied western boxing. It IS the supreme martial art for punching. Period!!
I think the technique would be more effective for training pitchers in baseball, not so much in fighting(in my humble opinion). I can see so many issues with implementing this technique as you fatigue in an actual fight. But hey, that's just my opinion. Thanks for sharing the video. It's something to consider.
I shouldn't have watched this video. Now I want to practice punching but I need to go to bed.

FightSmartTrav dude you do know that you are insulting two people on your own channel right?
Adam Mah HHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAH
Lol you guys are and I'll back him because first of all ur body mite as well be a rubber band ur flexible but never enough before you break what he said is true you do get freakish power with hooks like that I've broken ribs hitting like that and I'm not even big haha
it's not about punching harder, but faster, so you get to hit your target before the opponent moves his head! Rubber band speed hit!!!
Also... I ran a quick google search on "Nick Rewal Boxing".... and google has never heard of you. You've done a really good job of carving out an invisible niche for yourself. You'd figure with HUNDREDS of semi-pro (aka amateur) fights and your extensive knowledge that SOMEONE would have heard of you.... or said something about you... all those certifications have done a good job of making you not exist.
if you stretch your chest to a ridiculous length, wouldnt that tear shit loads of muscle?
As long as you know what you're doing and do a good warm up, you're fine
Ohhhhhh....
The basic idea behind more impact force is to try generating more momentum in order to transfer that energy to the opponent.
true
***** agree, he's showing maximum potential of the technique, you have to apply it if and when you can, perfect example is the jab as you say.
***** "....If you watch street fights or MMA/UFC fights, you'll see how the theory of karate falls a bit flat..."
Lyoto Machida, a Shotokan karate man has done quite well adhering to his original martial art at least for his stand up striking.
***** daniel213141 Theoretically - any stand alone martial art would fall to the well-roundedness of MMA? :)
The Ultimate Writer NZ I think I said that.
Tyson didn't wind up on his ounches at all actually, he just rotated his hips into them.
Magnus Johansson That's why he stood square and his feet were all over the place. In fights he wound up the overhand right a lot.
I think you raise a valid point. I would be concerned about telegraphing my punches. Rotating the hips is crucial, however.
You don't understand how the kinetic chain works. Try it before you start shooting off "you" mouth.
MURDR63 Before I respond, were you talking to me or Vince Moore ?
Michelle Sullivan Vince.
MURDR63 OK Thank you
No, he probably would have take klitschko down and done exactly the same thing... though let's be honest, that's not exactly an even size match up. Also, the ring had nothing to do with it. Randy hit him with a low single leg in the middle of the canvas. As soon as he was on the mat, he looked stupid. How does cage vs. ropes even come into play? Explain to me how the structure of the ring makes his statement any more valid.
Thanks I just hooked my bully

Hey Gabe, completely false. You shouldn't throw non-stop massive hook haymakers, but the hook is by far the most powerful punch you can throw. EVERYTHING potentially leaves you open for something else... so it's important to attack in a safe manner no matter which strike you're throwing. Concepts like attack angles, attacking "off-the-line", and changing attack levels all will drastically lessen your chances of being countered. Go to my website if you want to learn this stuff!
I'm learning this to defend my girlfriend because a kid is trying to harass her
That's sweet of you
Fight for yourself and you will end up fighting for others.
Diego Ramirez dont punch kids please
I bet your girlfriend picks on you too
Why not just couple that shoulder drop with a head movement that brings you in close, or a right straight that also brings your shoulder forward? You will absolutely lose power if you have less distance for your strike, that's just simple physics. You can make this work, you just have to do something to set it up... in most situations, a slip or a right punch will suffice.
lol I don't even fight
James tony didn't get a "Title Shot". Dana White threw him in the ring to make boxing look foolish and even said something like "I don't think that anyone in the stadium was surprised." Boxing is a very specific skill, it is not comprehensive fighting... of course a boxer would beat an MMA guy in a boxing match... he would just lose in any other form of fighting.
were you standing in front of a green screen??
no, a white screen 🤓

are u supposed to stand behind it?
I do... I've used it boxing gyms for more than a decade, and in my career as a professional MMA fighter. If you want, I will pay your travel expenses, and we can make a video where you show me how easy it is to dodge my telegraphed punch. I'll bet 500 dollars that you're sleeping in less than 5 minutes, and I'll give you 5 to 1 odds.
thanks i hurted today 6 peoples (just kidding😄)
*I hurt 6 people today*

"*Thanks, I hurt 6 people today (just kidding).*" Isn't that better, my fellow grammar nazis?
Lion Tail lol
Si vis pacem, para bellum ;)
it is a violent world, no one wants to be unprepared and waiting 10 minutes for cops to arrive when someone is doing some wild shit.
Awesome. LOL
well said.
I didn't even throw a single hook in this video so how can' there be a shitty hook? It's a kinesiology lesson you dumbass.
The elastic strip note is BS because, once you go up you put n the effort while when it goes back down you conceded plus the gravity..
Instruction unclear, i've knocked myself out.
I have a lesson on the hook that's on my website... check it out!
It's down for 24 hours... sorry man it will be back up tomorrow!
They will help with forearm and wrist strength... not speed.
Also, watch my video on "how to win a street fight with head movement"... I have more awareness about being hit than most boxers.
I haven’t thrown my hands in over 20yrs what can I do to see if I strength in my 👊🏾 fists and in my punch 🤛🆒💪🏾👍🏾💯😷😳✊🏾😤🤔🤭
Yea man... go to my website tomorrow (when it's uncrashed itself) and post that lesson request in the forum.
Great, I'm going to use this technique on antifa, Black Lives Matter and liberal movement.
Thanks for the positive feedback. It's not something I'd rush into, but I have women over 40 replicate this technique in my studio on a daily basis without injury.
This guy is great. I’m 45, got a heavy bag and standing punching bag. I get in great workouts without a gym or weights or any other junk.
You're just entirely wrong.
Elastic Recoil... no one has ever explained this to me before! Thanks!
ask yourself why special forces favor the martial arts for survival.
Since I've watched this video several times over a year ago, I have worked on this exact hook and being a skinny person, with four Kyokushin black belts by the way, my punch has become much stronger as well as faster. Thanks.
I was... shitty life
Watch the hook lesson on my website... it's free
My camera blows.
This is what Carson Wentz does on injury time?
Has anyone been studying daily from the vids on his website and feel improvement? The paid or free site? I havent joined yet but I will make time soon and really pour into it.

Thanks now i can fight a vampire stand user
well if you use another guy to demonstrate that would be better theory is never good. your head is not protected when you strike well hope to see other videos better than this one. thanks
You are a big guy you have no problem fighting with someone I m 17 years old 5'6 103lbs lol
same
I don't know why I'm watching this when I train for the UFC and I'm 12 so I have years to come
So like I was watching fight videos and I was like .........oof ..... I need to learn how to fight just in case someone wants to fight me. So here i am.........you created a freaking monster ill try using this when the times right..*evil laugh* *hahaha....HAHAHA* *cough...cough* hold on let me take a sip of my *TEA*
*popping mouth noise* ok bye
This is basically the best thing I've ever read. On another note, I've been into martial arts/MMA my entire life, and I love your videos, very informative and they really make fighting understandable. Do you think you could do something on how to train yourself to not blink when someone else throws a punch, and how to forecast what types of punches a person will throw?
True is pulled so much more strength and I try and finish cut.... .... thanks i suscribe
excellent analogy and explanation of how to throw the correct hook. Only problem is that this guy doesn't get his elbow high enough to be in line to follow his fist. On the point of impact the elbow needs to be in line with the fist to be able to transfer as much of your body weight as possible to maximize the power of the punch. Great explanation with the elastic band otherwise tho, perfect for those trying to understand the biology behind the hook!
this is why hooks are so easy to block or dip.See see the body move 1st then u know the hook is coming..master the jab..they work the best..
Trav, dig the style and scientific explanation. Hands down the best boxing training vids I've seen. Keep em coming!
NEW SUBBY 👊🏼👊🏼 #SouthPawGang😁
I swear I knew this from just watching boxing!! Don't get me wrong, I NEVER HAVE GOT IN A FIGHT AND IM NOT SAYING I CAN FIGHT, but I am obsessed with boxing and I always noticed this shoulder popping thing boxers would do while shadow boxing. So I actually learned to di it and it I know throw uppercuts and hooks with this elastic recoil and my punches feel crisp, snappy, and STRONG!! And also it keeps your balance better too
This technique works for the four basic boxing punches: jab, hook, cross, uppercut.
