  • This episode Dana is chasing down the cause of Code P0172 on her 2010 Subaru Forester which is causing the Check Engine Light (CEL). Going through the steps on troubleshooting it, she cleans and inspects the MAF sensor, throttle body as well as replaces both the engine and cabin air filters as both were well overdue. Hopefully these steps will resolve it.

    Hello everyone! A quick follow-up for this video:
This specific code did not return, but the CEL did come back with more P0000, P0301, P0302, P0303, and P0304 codes. These are not related to the P0172, and had been occurring randomly over the previous 2 years. The misfires were real, albeit nearly impossible to observe, and ended up being the exhaust valve guides in the heads. That video can be found here: ua-cam.com/video/KGOxTT1Sb_g/v-deo.htmlsi=O8rinlxqT_fV-mJi
    Thanks for watching and we hope this helps! Take care & stay safe!

    Why no follow up? The Cabin filter is completely unrelated to anything engine. Did it fix the code?

      @SpiritedWrenchers  4 місяці тому

      Hi Chesky, thanks for watching! You are correct that the cabin air filter doesn't have any direct bearing on the functionality of the engine or the cause of this code. I usually just replace both at the same time to prevent either air filter from getting too bad. As far as the code goes, my apologies for the lack of follow up! This specific code did not return, but the CEL did come back with more P0000, P0301, P0302, P0303, and P0304 codes, which ended up being the exhaust valve guides in the heads. @@cheskybaba4864 It was not immediate and the P0172 was not the gateway code to the others. The other codes had been intermittent on our Forester for 1-2 years at that point, so she could have thrown the P0172 as a separate issue or as part of the intermittent misfire issue that had been ongoing. I want to say we didn't see the P0172 return even when we received the P0420 for the catalytic converter, but I would check your O2 sensors if you're still experiencing the P0172 after cleaning up everything you can up top; might be a $50 fix from Amazon. Hope this helps and you find your solution soon; take care and stay safe!

    This worked well on my 2010 Impreza OBS with 180K, highly recommend to perform the idle relearn once this procedure is completed. There was the smallest amount of dust that had built up within the MAF, replaced the filter as that was due as well. Runs really well.

    Absolutely super job; you're the best Dana. However at the very end you comment about re-setting the computer and the code. Do you have a video on how that is done? My 2008 Impreza is showing the identical issue and with your very clear guidance I can probably do the job myself. Thank you!

      Hi Django and thanks for the very kind words!! We didn't plan on putting out a video on just the how-to reset the idle speed on a Subaru, but I can certainly explain it here.
      The best way that we've done it, is to turn the key to "on" for about 30 seconds before starting the engine, then let it idle for 5 minutes. Turn the ignition off, then after a minute, repeat the process, this time letting it idle for 10 minutes. After this, your Subaru should remember where the idle rpm speed is, and you won't have any issues with stalling or loss of power while driving. You could, of course, just drive the car as normal and after 2-3 drives, the car will reset itself through normal use, which might be a better option if you're unable to safely idle the car for whatever reason. Hope this helps; take care and stay safe!

    I like that tray idea! Just want to say that a lot of people suggest to first disconnect the battery and let power drain for 5 minutes or so before unplugging sensitive sensors such as the maf, so as not to stun or fry them. Just sayin'. Thanks for the well done vid.

      Thanks for watching! I was not taught to unplug the battery first, but that does make sense for safety. Thank you for sharing that advice with us! There is also a method to use after disconnecting the battery (which also clears the codes) in order for the car to relearn idle. I remember thinking I had broken the car the first time I drove after disconnecting the battery and it kept stalling.
      The tray is actually really neat and comes in different colors, we did a review on it awhile back on our channel. We still use all our gripty mats! Link to our review here: ua-cam.com/video/a2unWzk-L3A/v-deo.html

    • @SpiritedWrenchers
      @SpiritedWrenchers  Рік тому

      Hi Roni Hernandez, thanks for watching and asking. A clogged cabin air filter can have all sorts of negative impacts on both engine and AC performance. Its possible (no way to confirm) that the code could have been related to the cabin filter, but more likely to be unrelated. The MAF in and of itself gets dirty from regular driving, so if you've cleaned the MAF, replaced the engine and cabin air filters, the next thing I would look at for AC would be relay and fuses and if those are good then the blower motor. At the age of these Foresters, I've seen in online forums that the blowers are starting to fail. I sold my 2010 before it ever got to that point, but, hopefully your AC issue was purely related to the filter. Only one way to find out.... now that the cabin filter is replaced, run it! Good luck, and take care!

      Hello and thanks for watching and the question! Any time a fix is done with intent to resolve a check engine light, if you are waiting for it to clear on its own it will just take a few run cycles (on/drive/off) before it clears. The alternative to this is to disconnect the battery for 20-30 minutes which will clear the code immediately, but then you will need to give your vehicle time to relearn idle if it's a Subaru (I'm unsure about other makes).

      Hi MDM, thanks for watching! We will need to pin a comment to this video as this is our most commonly asked question. Yes, cleaning the EGR did resolve the P0172 for us and the code did not come back.
      However, a few months later we received P0000 and other P030x codes indicating misfires were occurring and chased them down to be caused by a slipping exhaust valve guide in the heads.

      Hello! Excellent username! The basics of an engine are just fuel-air-spark. I believe the 2011s have the FB engines, not the EJ as we had in the Forester. That said, a lot of the same components should be inspected and cleaned as you have already done to chase the easiest diagnosis. I'd say the next steps would be ensuring the throttle body and plug wires have no issues, followed by testing fuel and compression if no codes are active. If it's throwing any codes, that would be the best start to chase down, since a clogged catalytic converter or bad O2 sensor can cause severe reduction in power and function. While we are not as familiar with the FB engines, we do wish you the best of luck. Hope this helps; take care and stay safe!

      @SpiritedWrenchers  Рік тому

      @NONEOFYOURBIZ69 could be a defective MAF, not just dirty. Can you swap it with a friend's to see? The EJ engines in that generation of Impreza and Forester are all 2.5L, and the 2.0L are the FB. I do know that even the FB engines have wires, but I believe the mechanic is correct that each plug has its own coil rather than 1 centric coil pack like our EJ253 Forester. This makes changing the plugs all the more difficult, but the coil packs and plugs are not wireless. The FB engines also have the timing chain rather than a belt, and there was an active issue in North America for oil consumption. If you have the FB and it is consuming oil, you will likely need a new short block (which, I truly hope your issue is something Cat or TB related; much cheaper!).

      @NONEOFYOURBIZ69 not sure what to chase down next, to be honest. You've done everything that we would at this point, including taking it to a mechanic. The only next step would be to test the heads. Our P0172 ended up being a result of slipping exhaust valve guides, and we needed to buy new heads.

    Don't you want to do a throttle body relearn?

      Hi enduroelite, thanks for watching and asking! The process for throttle body relearn is the same as the idle relearn. When everything is reinstalled, idle the car for 3 minutes. Then idle again for 3-10 minutes. This would prevent the car from stalling upon returning to idle after running while driving.
