does anyone else get low key annoyed when Si doms are telling a super long detailed story that wasn’t asked for? I find myself sitting back thinking “ok so what’s the conclusion... what are you trying to get at? I don’t need all these details” but I force myself to politely listen to the whole story. It’s different when i’m actively present and eager to hear their story (then it’s brilliant!), but most of the time that’s just not the case 😅

This is exactly what happens with me (probably an ENTJ) and my mother (probably an ISFJ). She often tells me about something happened at her work, mentioning the names and procedures which distracts me from understanding her point. When she finishes, I summarized what she said in three sentences.
In contrast, when I describe an event, I usually say the result or whatever has the biggest impact first.

If it makes you feel any better, we get annoyed because your stories are incomplete. What were they wearing? What exactly did they say? Where were you guys sitting? Who else was around? TELL THE WHOLE STORY!!!
I’m ISFJ and my husband is ENFP. I get so annoyed because he doesn’t tell any stories in order or with the appropriate details and I constantly have to ask a ton of questions to get a complete story.

I'm very much in the Se camp. I struggle with trying to talk about something in a chronological order. I have to write down all the things I can think of about what happened, then try to put this random pile of memory bits into chronological order. Without that coping mechanism, my stories of what happened tend to run in circles and skip around all over the timeline.

Se would probably hate it but Si doesn’t mind reading.
Also, books require the use of your brain and it also takes longer to get to the ending.
Not to mention, it’s your responsibility to get there on your own.
Meanwhile, videos don’t use any of your brain’s power if you don’t want them to and they already have a set time in which you should finish them.

I've just noticed how this applies to communication issues my ISTJ husband and I sometimes have. If we're talking about concrete sensory sort of things I'll say something that had absolutely nothing to do with the last sentence either of us said, which confuses him because he assumes I'm still talking about that last thing. Reminds me of how you said there's a proper order or progression with Si. Whereas I'll just jump around. But with abstract intuitive subjects I love to stick to one idea and deep dive.

  • @Khswart1

Another totally different way to look as the sensory functions rather than how they behave relative to time, is how they literally perceive information. This is one of hardest things to fully explain to others in the Mbti realm but I’ll try to write my thoughts out.
Se is a little easier, I think it’s like the more in the moment and “real” sensory function. An Se user perceives sensory information in a very objective factual way. “It is what it is” no strings attached type thing.
Now Si however is very weird. It’s like getting a ‘vibe’ from something that you perceive, solely based off the sensory information it gives off. For me personally (INTP) tertiary Si with my dominant Ti makes for some very odd ways of perceiving and understanding things, and it makes it hard to explain concepts in my mind. But for example, in like edm music, there’s all kinds of crazy weird unnatural sounds. But to my Si when I hear them, I get like a whole vibe off of one sound. I kinda get an image in my head and almost like the emotion or feeling that sound gives off , what I actually perceive is literally the subjective impression that sound gives me, it takes a lot of focus and effort to make myself objectively hear the sound, and not hear all the noise in my head that the sound impresses upon me, does this make any sense?
IMO this may be why Si users have the stereotype of having better memories, because when you perceive things through Si, it is made into something more than what it is in reality, it is our brain attaching subjective meaning to the things we perceive, perhaps making it easier to identify later or remember/store/catalogue. Pleas let me know your thoughts, I can try to elaborate if I’m not making any sense.

After trying to figure this out by reading/watching content, your comment just made Si a lot clearer!
It does make sense, your example of the sound giving you a "vibe" and not just being a sound is really interesting. Do you have more precisions on that? Like what would be something that the sound makes you remember?
I'm just thinking as I'm writing it, but as an INFP having Ne then Si, it's blowing my mind how I just realized I'm slightly doing that.

This was really interesting to me. As you talked about trains and pogo sticks, linear vs non-linear etc I kept asking myself what this all means. I’ve been given the narrowed down concepts but my Ti/Se brain begs for multiple sensory examples of what this looks like in real life. If I were to have enough examples then I could logic them into place and understand how the analogies and descriptions of Si and Se apply. Working my way from the concept to how it manifests is just not something I do well on my own.

Si or Se has nothing to do with order, they are perceiving functions. MBTI websites and channels are spreading so much false, novice information out there it's cray cray. Everybody should learn instead from socionics. Also as far as time, Se doesn't go into different time periods, it's strictly here and now. If it goes into different time periods while talking, it's a mistyped Ne. Si doesn't care about order either, that would Ti or Te. I think I'm ENFP with really good Si or in a grip. It's like I'm stuck in the past with Si, I find it hard to move on and forget and care too much what people think. I've just had so much trauma maybe it's made me look outwards too much for validation and attention which is odd since I only started doing this when I turned 19, I was always happy alone without attention but now I crave it and seem like an unhealthy Fe though I'm not. It's like every day I ever lived was yesterday and I could write a book on it. I've typed for ESFJ and ESTJ, but I'm no Te Dom unless I have to use Te to pragmatically manage a group. And I thought I was Fe dom, but I've always been Fi user, escapist, sad at stuff, stuck in my ways, retreated, silent, and a bit hard to relate, but I am awfully altruistic and care about doing things right and positively changing people's lives and enriching them. I'm not ENTP since I clearly use more Te than Ti, I care for solid facts, truth, and external sources to make an iron-clad case vs Ti which makes convincing logical broad and abstract theories and arguments but they seem conspiratory and weird how they reach conclusions which can be right but it's sometimes as if only the Ti user understands their thinking. Of course as Ne users we both can come up with bullsh alternative facts and methods which I also stand by following my own ways and instructions that don't always follow direct orders.

Ne-Si is finding pattern in the world and figure out what we should concretely do with it. For example, Ne: people who study stuff that will come out in the test usually pass the test, Si: I should study.
As opposed to Ni-Si that makes patterns (aka find it within _themselves_ ) and identify concrete things to make it happen. Ni: I should pass the test. Se: study stuff that will come out in the test.

Yesterday, as I was walking outside, I spilled coffee all over myself; luckily I was wearing a rain jacket. So - you’ve got the walking, the carrying of the coffee, the drinking of the coffee, also, I’m talking, AND carrying a bag, PLUS trying to navigate directions; I just got a haircut, so I’m reflecting and basking in the relief of the awkwardness of that experience being over...dear God..a recipe for disaster. As I observed the spillage, all over my pretty rain coat, I thought to myself, “Why would the 3rd sip miss my mouth, but I did fine on the first two sips?” Lately I’ve noticed myself saying the word “sensing” outloud, when I trip, get tangled up in a cable, and all the rest. I just say “sensing.” But outloud. I’m not weird. -INFJ

Se would describe the look, sound, ride, handling, speed of the boat, and how great it is for wakeboarding. Si would wonder if the boat is safe, reliable and whether the captain is trustworthy or they might be a boater too and take issue with how the captain operates and maintains the boat. With Si, it's my way or the highway.

Si is internal body intelligence. That means feeling what food is healthy, sex and comfort, massages, sensuality. If si is feminine in ops personality, it is also forgetful and not good with memory, but the internal changes or hormonal disbalance is felt fast. So often si works in health career too. Si masculine together with te doing (istj) is more the hard instruction type. Si in fact never acts alone, it works together with other cognitive functions. Si + fe plays a role in psychology and social care and si + ti in health care or medicine

the MAIN DIFFERENCE between Si and Se can be described as follows...
Si = do you feel gas building up for a possible fart? - THATS Si.
Se = did you hear someone (be it yourself or someone else) fart??? - THATS Se.
a rather quick and humorously EFFECTIVE way i just thought of to describe the difference...

I think I’m a si-dom despite always getting ni in these silly online tests, lol…. I will say that I think si is mostly about valuing experience, and I also think they are heavy into pattern recognition (something often labeled as a ni-thing). I say this because a pattern is essentially a predictable sequence of events rooted in historical data (sounds like a definition of si…), and most people use them as a tool to familiarize themselves with the unknown (therefore, “valuing experience” by applying patterns). If anything, applying a pattern to a situation, and using your imagination to tweak parameters one at a time to project forward what might happen is extremely expansive (an ensemble of outcomes is established, Ne-like) and a very si approach…. But this pattern-recognition, future-thinking stuff is often labeled as ni. I honestly don’t think there really is much intuition to noticing patterns - they are rooted in reality. 👀 I’m guessing most people think they are intuitive creatures and immediately cross the si-doms of their list of possibilities without really considering what si might be…. I think that’s kind of sad… 😞

I think this is precisely why I sucked at chess initially. It has a lot of variables and thousands of tactics. Tactics involve a lot of orderly things to be played with several different pieces. My Ni-Se ass can only focus on one thing at a time. Although as I progressed and was able to recognize the patterns I can switch between different tactics effortlessly. I'm still not a pro player by any means though. If someone throws in some kind of unexpected tactic my brain totally splatters.
And to think they call us INTJs good at chess, I mean there are definitely some of them who are pro so congrats. But my head gets dizzy if I have to focus on so many things at a time. Obviously I'm not the kind who gives up so easily :D

    Respecting the order of things...
Oh, man. When I was a little kid my mom had to make sure she taught me the right method the very first time I did something, because I would absolutely refuse to do that thing any other way after that. In fact, it’s something I’ve had to work on accepting that "the order of things" is often arbitrary and irrelevant.
Will your dinner plates fit in the cupboard only if they’re stacked in a specific order? Sure, then it’s important, (or at least useful).
Keeping those gaming cards (Magic/Yugioh/whatever) in the same order as they were in the pack? Not so much.
Still feel the urge, though, and get annoyed at people not respecting the system, particularly if the system promotes efficiency and saves me energy from having to figure out/sort everything from scratch again.
