Our first real EARTHBAG build. We felt this project was necessary to gain some skills in building with EARTHBAGS, but also to test all the tools we made. This is definitely a confidence booster before we get to our OFF-GRID Debt Free house build.
This how to, takes you along on our alternative building method from beginning to end.

We are Jim and Jessica, a husband and wife team who decided to make the leap from living the city life to an off-grid homestead. We have no training in carpentry or electrical work. We've come armed only with two Permaculture Design Certificates and a whole lot of determination.
Join us on our journey to move beyond a sustainable lifestyle into a regenerative one. We chose to live in the desert because we love the location and we wanted the challenge of bringing this desert landscape into productive abundance.

the secret to removing the form , Is to wax the form with car wax first or use old candle wax, by rubbing ot all over the wood form first, Also helps to sand form before waxing it.... But Your table did come out NICE.......

Good thinking doing a test build before starting on the house. Sounds like you learned a few things you can tweak. That bar turned out awesome! Love the decoration on it. I’m a little concerned about the stucco flaking off later, since it doesn’t really have anything to grab onto. I know you have done your research. I think a chute, like used with concrete, would save you a lot of time filling the bags. Y’all are so hardworking & very ingenious in building the tools you need. I am so happy for y’all that this build turned out so awesome. Can’t wait for the house to start, as I am sure you are anxious also. Blessings on y’all, your build & your homestead. Hi guys
That turned out great! Love the artistic embellishments. Maybe you could make some kind of hopper with a chute to make it easier to dump dirt in the bags. Fill it once every dozen bags and just pour the dirt into the bags before needing to refill again. Might save some time and/or effort.
Love what you are doing! Kudos from California 💛

Wow it looks great. Jessica is a natural plasterer. A couple things to consider. You may want to consider staggering your joints wherever you can. Also the arches will settle (drop) a couple of inches which if you are putting in a door or window you will have to compensate for. You can actually see the arch drop in the video when you pulled out the forms. You may be able to use wiggle wood, flexible plywood, to shim up the arch that way once it settles the arch will remain the same size as your form.

    • @ourselfreliantlife
      @ourselfreliantlife  4 роки тому

Y'all did a beautiful job on this!!! I watched your cistern build on that as well. I'm not sure if you have ever watched a channel on youtube called My Little Homestead, but they have build 4 round self standing bedrooms and a 2 story Music Art building. and a 3 room cabin and more. They live there in Arizona somewhere, maybe you guys could not only watch their videos but also visit them for ideas and tour on site of existing builds? They use to attach wood to their bags and for hanging stuff on walls, what they call "cleats" which is 2 - 3 pieces of wood depending on it's purpose, with nails on multiple sides to stick into and hold everything better in place. They use them to hold in door frames and window frames as well. I thought this might be helpful for you all as you build your living space!!!!!!

CONGRATULATIONS YOU DID IT WELL. I HAVE A LOT OF EXPERIENCE ON THIS AND IF YOU NEED HELP WITH IDEAS FOR YOUR HOUSE LET ME KNOW AND IM MORE THAN HAPPY TO HELP YOU!
THIS IS JUST A SUGGESTION: NEXT TIME JUST ADD SOME COW POOP TO THE MIX AND TO BUILD A STRONGER WALL USE SOME CHICKEN WIRE, THE OTHER THING YOU CAN DO AND IS EASIER TO BUILD THE ARCH YOU CAN USE THE SAME MOLD BUT USE 2 LITTER SODA BOTTLES, WHAT YOU DO IS PUT A BLACK PLASTIC BAG OVER THE WOOD MOLD AND THE YOU PUT SOME DIRT MIX FIRST, THEN YOU PUT THE FIRST LINE OF BOTTLES AFTER MORE MIX AND KEEP GOING UNTIL THE HIGH YOU WANT AND TRUST ME IS A LITTLE EASIER TO DO IT THIS WAY, I BUILT ALMOST EVERYTHING IN MY FARM IN PUERTO RICO WITH CAR TIRES, BOTTLES, PLASTIC BAGS AND PALLETS, AND IF YOU WANT A FOREVER WALL USE CAR TIRES THAT IS FASTER THAT THE EARTH BAGS PLUS FOR THE HOUSE YOU WILL HAVE NATURAL INSULATION FOR YOUR HOUSE, I DON'T KNOW WHAT PART YOU ARE BUT IF YOU HAVE SUMMER AND WINTER THIS WILL BE PERFECT FOR YOU. AND ANOTHER THING IF YOU NEED HEAT FOR WINTER YOU CAN USE USED OIL FOR THIS, PLUS YOU CAN BUILD A JACUZZI POOL WITH HEAT THIS WAY YOU CAN ENJOY IT WHEN IS COLD OR LATE NIGHT TO RELAX AFTER WORK, ARE THOUSANDS OF WAYS TO MAKE EVERYTHING WITH CAR TIRES, EARTH BAGS, AND PLASTIC BOTTLES, PLUS YOU CAN USE COLOR GLASS BOTTLES TO MAKE BEAUTIFUL DESIGNS WITH THEM. I WANT TO GIVE A LOT OF CREDITS TO THE LADY SHE IS A GREAT AND HARD WORKER AND A LOT OF HELP FOR YOU, YOU ARE A LUCKY MAN, MY WIFE IS THE SAME SHE HELPS ME A LOT AT THE FARM. WELL, HAVE A GREAT TIME AT YOUR PLACE AND PLAN EVERYTHING REAL WELL BEFORE YOUR START ANYTHING.

      @@ourselfreliantlife HELLO AGAIN AND BLESSINGS.
AS I SAID BFR ANY HELP YOU NEED JUST LET ME KNOW AS MY FATHER SAID: 2 HEADS IN THIS CASE 3 THINK BETTER THAN 2. AND I GROW IN A 100% GREEN ENVIRONMENT BCZ MY GRANDPA BRINS FROM PALERMO ITALY WHAT HIS FATHER BRINGS FROM SPAIN IN 1876 WHEN HE OPENS THE 1st TERRANOVA GREEN FARMS IN ITALY HIS FATHER'S GREAT GREAT GREAT GREAT GRANDFATHER METHODS OF GREEN CONSTRUCTION FOR HUMAN AND ANIMAL'S SHELTERS AND UNDERGROUND GREEN HOUSES PONDS AND ANIMAL SHELTERS FOR WINTER TIME AND DON'T STOP PRODUCTION AND RAISING ANIMALS AND FISH MY FAMILY USED IN SPAIN FOR CENTURIES.
HE HAD AT THAT TIME AN UNDERGROUND AQUAPONIC SYSTEM ALL YEAR ROUND BCZ IN ITALY WINTER IS VERY HARD AND MY GRANDPA BRING IT TO THE NEW WORLD PUERTO RICO IN 1930 WHEN HE OPENED The 2nd TERRANOVA GREEN FARMS AND HE FOUND A COUPLE HE WAS FROM JAPAN AND SHECWSS FROM KOREA AND SHE WAS A GENIUS IN NATURAL FARMING SHE WAS MY TEACHER SINCE I WAS 4 YEARS OLD AND TRAINING ME IN ALL ASPECTS OF FARMING AND RAISING ANIMAL THE NATURAL WAY.
NATURAL FARMING IS BETTER THAT THE ACTUAL ORGANIC FARMING BCZ NATURAL FARMING DON'T USE CHEMICAL ELEMENTS LIKE ORGANIC DO FOR EXAMPLE TO GET (Ca) WE USE BONES SEA SHELLS EGG SHELLS AND WE TREAT THEM AND DISSOLVED IN WATER FOR (K) WE USE BANANA PEELS NEVER CHEMICALS AND I SAW YOUR VIDEOS AND YOU ARE IN THE DESSERT YOU CAN GROW A FOREST FARM THIS WAY YOU CAN GROW ALL KIND OF VEGGIES TROPICAL FRUITS AND TREES RAISE FISH AND ANIMALS YOU MUST USE 50 GALLONS DRUMS WITH WORMS SYSTEM FOR YOUR COMPOST TOILET AND MAKE HUMANURE FERTILIZER AND A GRAY WATER SYSTEM USING BOTH WITH NATURAL FILTERS FOR THE IRRIGATION SYSTEM FOR YOUR CROPS. THE MOST IMPORTANT IS THE FOREST PLANTATION BCZ THIS WILL BE THE HEART OF YOUR PLANTATION DESIGN FOR WIND DRY AND DROUGHT SEASONS PROTECTION YOU CAN USE YOUR CHICKENS FOR EGGS AND COMPOST PRODUCTION WITH OUT EXPENDING MONEY IN FOOD FOR THEM JUST COLLECTING FOOD WASTE FROM RESTAURANTS AND SUPERMARKETS AND NOT ONLY THAT YOU CAN RAISE YOUR OWN MEET AND ALL KIND OF BIRDS GROW THEM USE SOME FOR YOU AND SALE THE REST FOR MONEY GOAT MILK FOR MILK & CHEESE GROW MICROGREENS FOR RESTAURANTS AND GOURMET DELIS ANOTHER INCOME YOU HAVE THE LAND THAT IS THE IMPORTANT ELEMENT TO LIVE FREE WITH OUT DEBIT.
I WISH I HAVE LAND HERE I LOST EVERYTHING IN MY FARM WITH THE HURRICANE MARIA IN PUERTO RICO 2017 AND WE CAME HERE TO WORK AND REBUILD IT BUT SO FAR I PUT MY BUSINESS PLAN ON THE INTERNET BUT JUST EVERYBODY WANTS ONLY MY KNOWLEDGE AND FORMULAS AND WHEN I SAY THEY ARE NOT INCLUDED IN THE PACKAGE THEY JUST EVAPORATED AND NEVER CONTACT ME AGAIN IS REALLY FUNNY HOW PEOPLE ARE HERE AND NOW WITH THE EARTHQUAKE LAST YEAR I SCARE TO COME BACK THE SITUATION IS REALLY BAD.
WE ARE IN CHICAGO IL. BUT LIFE IN THIS BIG CITY IS HARD AND HORRIBLE I LOVE TO BE AT THE FARM ALL THE TIME WHERE YOU ARE FREE AND DO WHAT YOU LIKE KNOW AND LOVE WE ARE JUST PRAYING TO OUR GOOD LORD TO PROVIDE A FARM FOR US TO GROW AND MAKE GOOD MONEY BCZ IN NATURAL FARMING ARE MILLIONS INVOLVED IF YOU KNOW HOW.
WE ARE CHRISTIANS AND I WORK ALL MY LIFE FOR THE LORD I'M THE 5th GENERATION OF CHRISTIAN PREACHERS IN MY FAMILY BUT HERE NOT EVEN A GOOD CHURCH WE CAN'T FOUND. CHICAGO IS CRAZY FULL OF BAD PEOPLE GANGS DRUGS IS HELL IN ONE WORD VERY DANGEROUS.
WELL MY BROTHER AND SISTER IN THE LORD I LET YOU GO UNTIL NEXT TIME KEEP IN TOUCH IS BEEN A PLEASURE TO MEET YOU EVEN THROUGH THIS I WISH YOU THE BEST OF THE BEST AND IF YOU NEED ANY TIPS LET ME KNOW. I HAVE A QUESTION: WHAT PART YOU ARE LOCATED YOU DON'T HAVE TO ANSWER IF YOU DON'T FEEL COMFORTABLE OK.
      SINCERELY . . .
      YOUR BROTHER IN THE LORD.

Great video guys. Your mix of humor and information is spot on. Jim, gotta watch that barbed wire, it can bite you bad! Have you tested your mix for weather resistance yet?

      Thanks Bill!
Nope, we haven't tested the mix. I'm thinking you're talking about the plaster. We slapped it on and then we'll observe. I already think we could have added either more sand or straw in the plaster.
