We're going to break down all the materials, costs, and time. You decide if this is something you want to do, or if maybe buying something is better.

Thankyou for these videos, you guys are doing some awesome stuff out there!!!
A question of practicality from someone that has only dabbled so far - would it make sense in some circumstances to simply dig the hole and just line that? What is the real purpose for earthbags when already in the ground and using a liner?

The amount of physical labor you both put into this project is incomprehensible for most people. I have worked in construction for 40 years, all I can say is Wow and maybe you need a tractor. What a great job.

I have to admire your persistence most of all. There were moments where I couldn't see your vision. But, then you'd do the next episode and I would sit up straight and exclaim, "Ah ha!". Keep going. Your race has barely begun.

I'm shopping for a 10k gallon direct burial right now in Cali & all the numbers I'm getting are in the $20,000.00 range! You guys killed it & you will never regret going that big... especially when water becomes more valuable than gold! I know this is old but thought it would add to the awesomeness of what you guys accomplished... keep on keepin' on!

The value of water is directly related to scarcity:if you are dying of thirst it is more valuable than gold.If you are drowning then water has is worthless.

After they stated their cost I had to see how much a tank that size would cost...😱😂 they go from 12k-15k, don't for forget the install and deliver.

Coming from a guy who has done a LOT of home construction projects himself, this projects may have been financially cheap, but there has to be a value for your own time and labor. Because building that looks like a heII of a lot of work for a man and woman! If you two really built it by just yourselves by hand, I’ve got to hand it to you both!

    Green Dream Project
    Jim and Jessica,
My Uncle and I are looking at some land around St Johns, AZ and are going to live off grid, build us a cistern and house from earthbags as well!!!
You guys did a fantastic job with this!!! Your filming is awesome, your work and work ethic is superb, before you know it you'll have your house done as well. You need to either get something to leach the toxicity from the cement or seal it so it won't leach into the rain water...unless Ferrocement is already nontoxic, I haven't researched it to know!!!!
The surface area of the top of your cistern with the gutter is 415.27 ft2.
For every 1000 ft2 and 1" of rain one collects 600 gallons of water.
So, at your basically 415 ft2 which is a little less than 1/2 the 1000 ft2
you will collect just off the cistern approximately ***250 gallons*** of water for every 1" of rain you get, just off of the cistern!!!
You figure your area because it's round, by taking the radius and square it then multiply by Pi/3.14, so 11.5 X 11.5 X 3.14 = area of 415.27 ft2!!!
I'm so happy for you guys!! Thank you for sharing your journey!!!!

I'm so impressed! I'm from the VI, and it's the law to have cisterns there. For a normal average home, we figure the cost is around $30 to $45K. Most people I know with a normal house have at least 15K gallons. The law states (simplified) that every square foot of roof = cubic foot of water. $2500 is beyond amazing!

For future reference, for making liners. Sew old bedsheets together, then soak them in melted bees wax. Particularly the dirtiest part of the bees wax. (The throw away portion). Seems like the grit in it helps seal better. This is what my landscaping guy does for small backyard coy fish ponds.

Congratulations, I feel like you set up new standard of cisterns for harvesting rain water. All the best I'm from Algeria.

This is amazing, but I wanted to see the connections and hear about the amount of rain you typically get, how long it takes to fill, what you use it for, etc.

So the one thing that you didn't account for, that I think you should have, was the cost of digging the hole. You can probably divide by 3 (since there were 3 holes dug), but I'm sure it's not going to raise the cost by much. Of course there are other small things, if we want to be pedantic, but I don't think those matter in the greater scheme of things. Good job on the build, you two, that's definitely an epic feat!

Thanks Raoul! I was thinking about the dig. I didn't add it on, because one, it was mainly for the house build, and two I thought technically somone could hand dig it. So I mainly kept it to materials that went into the cistern.
