About 20 years ago, my wife came home from visiting her grandmother in the nursing home. She asks me, "Have you ever heard of Frankie Valli?' I was like, "Hell, yeah. Why?" She goes on to tell me that he was at the nursing home visiting a female relative of his. It was her birthday. He had the staff bring the piano in the common room and he did a solid 2 hours for those elderly folks. My wife said that they were loving it. He not only did his songs, but was taking requests like "The Lion Sleeps Tonight". This was unbelievable, this nursing home is not in Jersey or even close. It is in a little bitty town in Oklahoma. My respect for him got even bigger.

I was in elementary school when these guys were really popular and every Friday we got to spend the second half of the day dancing in class. Our teacher was very much into music of all kinds and we would push our desks to the walls and crank up the music and dance. I can remember this song as being one that we danced to on a regular basis. I was in elementary school in Southern California and we spend our summers on the beach so the whole Southern Cal/West Coast sound was what we were listening to. Good memories. You are so damn cute, Fil. I know creepy coming from a 66 year old but still I so enjoy listening to your love of music in all its forms. Thank you for taking me back to a wonderful time in my life. Music always does that for me.
@@ReltubTheWiz That's funny you would say that. The Four Seasons were my older sisters favorite live band. For decades she followed them, one of the last things she did before she passed was to see them live at a local casino.it made the end of her life a lot more bearable.
Frankie Valli is a living legend with a voice unlike anyone else. I love there music. I have since I was a kid and I’m 70 now. I’m old but I like great music. Thanks for playing it.

I remember when this song came out. This has stood the test of time and never sounds dated. I was so lucky to have been a teenager during the 60,s. Amazing music was non-stop on the radio. Melodies and harmonies that logde in the mind and soul forever! Thanks Fil.
I never thought of it that way Fil, but you are right, the Four Seasons DID survive the British Invasion! A lot of radio play for them here in Northern California in the ‘60’s! Great memories!
Great, Fil. How can anyone not love the Four Seasons? So many hits and Frankie's voice...so identifiable. Keeping in the falsetto theme, maybe an analysis of Smokey Robinson? Awesome singer and equally fantastic writer.
Hi Fil! One of my very favorites! So happy I was a teenager when these guys came on the scene! I was there when these songs were first popular! I loved Jersey Girls! Thanks for doing this group! Frankie had a voice like no other! ✌️
Saw them last year in Florida. Put on an awesome show. Whole audience was dancing. Ofcourse he had all new backup singers and dancers. But his voice was still amazingly strong.

Excellent analysis and breakdown again! Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons was a group even my Mom like back then. to the best of my knowledge this footage was from the "Hullabaloo" television show that aired from January 12, 1965 to April 11, 1966 (with reruns continuing until August 29, 1966) and featured some of the most popular pop/rock acts of the mid-60s. a good one Fil.
As you say, they did survive the British Invasion, their hit "Dawn" in 1964 even gave the Beatles a run for top spot for several weeks.. Loved that song, but my favorite by them was their version of "I Got You Under My Skin "...
I took my father to see Frankie Valli on a tour just a couple of years ago, and amazingly enough he can still hit most of the notes perfectly well. Clearly there was a singer in the combo that was doubling a lot of his vocals in case he couldn't make it - he is over 80 years old now - but it was totally clear that he got most of it himself. The group still plays around 100 theater-scale dates a year, and it wasn't some kind of showcase that only brought him out for a little while - it was a full on concert that covered all of the hits over the years. Very impressive.
Sadly Frankie's vocal is lip synced. It's a digitally enhanced performance track - made for his live show. The band plays live to a click track to keep it all aligned. Frankie's mic has a switch to let him talk between songs.
Gee, no blocked video? AMAZING! :) I always loved his falsetto parts. All these 5' 5" dudes can really get up there. Brian Johnson? 5' 5". Dio? Frankie? I mean, so many tiny guys with high voices. Lou Gramm? The list is endless. Frankie had a weird sounding voice, tho. But so did a lot of singers. What mattered was could he sing or not. I think he hit pretty much all his notes right on the money. Although it's easier to hit like that when you don't do a slide from each note but still he was really accurate. Nice point about singing into a new key. Not the easiest thing to do. nice vid.
I think aside from knowing how to sing, great singers have that kind of distinct sound that separates them from other singers who can also sing quite well. You know when it is Frank Sinatra or Karen Carpenter or Louis Armstrong for example.
Saw him in summer of 2019 live in Modesto California. At 85 yrs of age he still delivers the same clear voice and he played a 90 minute set and encore and was excellent!!!!
Again another great voice............have u listened to Linda Ronstat sing “Blue Bayou.......bueatiful too......I’m a baby boomer, so I love this. I feel privileged to have been at a time of so many great songs and singers ......luv, luv, luv
I dabble in singing myself, and I can attest that going from chest to head to falsetto is very hard to do accurately and with a similar tone, so it does not sound forced or strange. I also love 'Sherry' from Frankie... thanks for the analysis as always Fil...
Fil, you break it all down in such a superb, thoughtful, and clear way. Your passion, love and visceral feel for music is remarkable. Thanks for being you and sharing it with us.
Your explanation was exactly what I was looking for when I thought about Frankie Valli's high-pitched ultra nasally vocals. No guitar cables, hysterical. Once you know that TV performances were faked, you cannot unsee it.
Frankie VAlli is one of the best singers to come out of the rock era. Just about any rock music book you open up and they talk about the early sixties music, all you will read about is The Beach Boys and very a seldom word about the 4 Seasons. The 4 Seasons were the first self contained band who wrote their own songs and played their own instruments and were on their fourth number one hit song while The Beach Boys were barely hitting their first number one song hit in 1964. The 4 Seasons had already scored a number one hit song in 62, 63 and 64 as well as being the only band to score a number one hit song before during and after the Beatles. Thank you so much for posting this and you yourself have a great sounding voice. Thank you
The Jersey boys!!❤️ Being from New Jersey, these guys were really big and did a lot of concerts, unfortunately I never got to see them live, too young. But will always love them!❤️
Great analysis as always. I was born in “60” so I heard a lot of Frankie on the radio when I was a child and always found his voice to be mesmerizing. With his tone and the way he could switch registers he reminded me of a parrot or a myna bird. A remarkable and unmistakable singer.
Really interesting. The very first album I ever bought was the 4 Seasons 1964 Rag Doll album featuring Ronnie, which I think was a #1 hit. It cost $2.57 and it wasn't even stereo, it was monophonic, which was fine with me as I didn't have a stereo, I was playing it on my parents' suitcase portable record player. I still have the album. I was into electronics and I finally bought a decent turntable and built a Hi-Fi amplifier, and I remember what a revelation to hear the sound of these bands in high-fidelity instead of coming from a tinny transistor radio.
Thank you for this, Fil. Love these guys (they're my second favorite band after Jay and the Americans). It took a while for the Four Seasons to catch on, but once they did - with "Sherry" - they had a long string of hits (including three straight Number One hits beginning with "Sherry"). They were one American band who continued to do well right in the midst of the British Invasion.
A few things I love about this video: - Great song to analyze. I am sure everyone was singing along! -The detail you talk about is quite amazing, things the average listener has no idea about. -And, last but not least, I'm watching you the whole time watching the video & you have an incredible smile going on for almost the entire video while they sing, from the very first note. Love your smile, Fil. I watched this twice in a row just to watch you smile!! ♡
this was my initial exposure to music. my dad had a small wood shop in or basement. 8-track player with Frankie and ccr played so often I followed their music now into my mid 50's. thanks dad.
Huge string of successful big hits for the Four Seasons! With that unmistakable unique vocal style of Frankie Valli with that effortless switch from chest voice to falsetto that they were famous for. As a boy l remember them all over the radio. Candy Girl and Dawn two of their songs that stuck in my head and l loved as a kid. Once again you nailed it Fil! Great analysis!😎🎼🎶🎵🇨🇦
Thank you, Phil, for the great review of Frankie Valli's vocal performance. It's really good to hear that from someone who knows what he's talking about. Frankie knows how to control his voice and vibrato without over doing it. In short, he knows when to go high, change key and when to use his natural vibrato, which the audience has been waiting to hear. One another note (no pun intended), Frankie has recorded many beautiful songs without the falsetto, especially in the 1970s. Once again, thank you for your expertise. Great Job!
Fil, Thanks for another wonderful analysis! I'm learning a lot from you about head voice, chest voice, and falsetto. I saw Frankie and the Four Seasons with a gal pal over forty years ago in my hometown of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. It was a fantastic show.
"Oldies but SO GOODIES" I remember singing along with this number. Where have the Years Gone ? I volunteer at a Hospital. This song always cheers people up. Thanks, Fil from Eve G.
I have seen a lot of groups live since I started going to concerts in the early 60's and still go to concerts after 60 years. . I saw Frankie Valli and the 4 seasons in 1966. Joe Long had taken over base at that time. They had a drummer and a rhythm guitar player accompanying them. Still in all my years of going to concerts one on the best live shows I have ever seen ! No special effects or other crap. Pure singing talent ! I have seen Frankie Valli about 10 additional times since then, Very pleasing analysis of groups from this time period ............
I recall being a young child in the backseat of my father’s car, noticing their name on the signs and sandwich boards of the small clubs they played in and around our northern NJ neighborhood and wondering what they sounded like. Then Sherry Baby came out…..Great analysis.
I was lucky enough to see Frankie Valli and Four Seasons in Concert three times through the 60s-early 70s.. The first time was in 1967 in Washington DC. The concert was stunning and I was amazed about how authentic and great they sounded live, they were perfect. They were extremely entertaining, this probably isn't well know, but besides performing their music, I think they spent just as much time talking, interacting with the audience and just joking around with each other than actually performing their music, it was the perfect packaged performance, it flowed! The banter between the guys was awesome and extremely funny! One of the best concerts I've ever seen as far as total entertainment!
Hi Fil, Thank you for your analysis, it is excellent. Great job. I always learn something new from you. Back @ 1972-73, I had the honor and pleasure of being a member of their band playing keyboards. Let me say that in the time I was with them, I learned a lot, not only musically, but professionally as well. My career eventually ended up doing, and still doing studio work/productions, all thanks to them, and the professionalism I learned from Frankie. The guys are top notch, and Frankie a very disciplined, kind, and fun person. While the rest of the group/band went along our day, Frankie was taking care of his voice, and very dedicated to it. A very disciplined person. He has an incredible voice. In rehearsals, he would sing off the microphone, and his voice was the same as on the records. What a talent !! Anyway, thank you for recognizing Frankie's talent and please, continue doing the great work you do.
Was never a big Four Seasons fan most of my life until I saw The Jersery Boys in New York City about 5 years ago. What a great musical that was. If you get a chance its a must see.
Thanks for another very interesting analysis video! Really find I’m learning lots with your explanations and demonstrations ! Thanks 😊 Love the song ! What fun !
I am glad Fil "did" this one. Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons have a very large catalogue, lots of great music to listen too. Odd how I was listening to singers in falsetto (Bee Gees, Samantha Sang) and Fil just happens to do Frankie Valli. One vocalists from the period that I listen to (not falsetto) is Elaine "Spanky" McFarland (Spanky and our Gang). There is an outtake video of them doing "Sunday' where Elaine is able to simply turn on her full singing voice, in seconds. I know Fil says our singing voice is our speaking voice but this girl turns on an entire different voice. Thanks Fil.
Ahh the iconic falsetto of Mr. Valli.. you either love the sound or not.. and I admit Frankie isn't for everyone but as I said, he and the Four Seasons are LEGENDARY. "December,1963" is BY FAR my absolute favorite song from them. Great stuff Professor Fil... as always!! ROCK!!
I remember when this song came out. It was pre Beatles and music was pretty dull at that time and no one had ever heard a voice like Frankie's. It was raw and gritty and the lyrics were almost naughty. We kids loved it. I wouldn't trade growing up in the Sixties for anything. What an incredible time to come of age.
That Guys control always amazed me ...and the other fellas definately were nothing to scoff at either...what real classics.....good breakdown and analysis ..

I just saw him about 3 years ago and he is still incredible.
He uses autotune during his shows, although I can swear one time he was lipsyncing during a performance of “Who Loves You” in like 2019
He really punches those notes dead on pitch. Amazing breath support and control. Impressive.
Phil - the key change is the best part of the song near the end.

A few things I love about this video:
- Great song to analyze.
Thanks!
this was my initial exposure to music. my dad had a small wood shop in or basement.
8-track player with Frankie and ccr played so often I followed their music now into
my mid 50's.
Thanks!
Loved the Four Seasons. Another great choice and analysis, Fil. Rock
Great analysis of a great group and singer.
Still in all my years of going to concerts one on the best live shows I have ever seen
The very first concert I ever went to featured them and Jackie Wilson, as well as others, on the same bill. Talk about a dynamite concert!
Hi Fil! Thanks for the great demo and music lesson!
Hi Fil,
Thank you for your analysis, it is excellent.
Thanks 😊
Love the song ! What fun !
sandra brinker He's the best😊
Brings back awesome memories of growing up ♥️
Your face on Frankie’s lead in to the key change, love it!
Very good breakdown. You made me love the Four Seasons more than I already do.
Thanks Fil.
Yes! Spanky was amazing
Ahh the iconic falsetto of Mr. Valli.. you either love the sound or not.. and I admit Frankie isn't for everyone but as I said, he and the Four Seasons are LEGENDARY. "December,1963" is BY FAR my absolute favorite song from them. Great stuff Professor Fil... as always!! ROCK!!
Your face always expresses the joy of the music. Beautiful and extremely enjoyable!
They've recorded some great songs!! Thanks for analyzing this song!
Nice review Fil, great job ! My personal favorite of theirs is Big Girls Don't Cry & of course their first hit Sherry . What great talents they are !
Class oozes Frankie Valli
Awesome voice! Just saw this musical here locally and it was great!!!! Those harmonies are timeless. Such a great group!
Brings back so many memories from My Youth! He still is performing! 😍😍😍
I wouldn’t have guessed how fascinating I could find the mechanics and techniques related to singing and playing music-I really appreciate your analyses! You explain things so well and bring up points that give me a whole new perspective to music that I’ve enjoyed for years but maybe didn’t fully understand. 💜💜💜
Another great analysis. Side note-Was watching some of your older videos and you have stepped up your game so much! Please take that as the compliment it’s meant to be🙂
FRANKIE VALLI 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
