  • We go behind-the-scenes of the production of our recently-released Tested VR series with a look at the shooting and editing workflow. Joey explains how we used the Z Cam K1 Pro to document the makers' workshops and builds, and how he processed and edited that video in Adobe Premiere. Making VR 180 video is an interesting production process!

    Thanks a lot guys! Not gonna lie, this actually was the very first app I installed from the Oculus Store when I got the Quest, my first VR headset, a week ago. I've been loving the VR content you produced. It's so immersive that it's actually eerie to stand in front of Adam as he explains things.

    Pull up a chair, relax, and VR180 is the best cinematic experience, hands down...

    180 VR video is the only way to go, the resolution is better and who really wants to see what's behind him or herself anyway? I mean how many times do we look behind us when we're attending a live performance in front of us? Near zero is the answer. (Pete)

    360 video also requires a lot of stitching which cannot be done without some nasty artifacts. Also 360 is a novelty that wears off in a few minutes in most cases. Notice how a theater stage is just in front of the audience and apart from the occasional trip down the isles by the actors in some shows people don't really want to turn around even in actual life.

    Can it support open source workflows from RAW files all the way through editing/streaming?
    Thinking blender, just don't know if the plugins are there, or if they use proprietary file types etc. Also are their softwares open source (assuming no)?

    Really good review.
    One caution: Any thing from Adobe will have a monthly cost of about $55.

    I purchased the camera but the big issue is that my Mac or my laptop windows 11 will not allow the wunderstich software to be opened do to security issues. I ever turned off my security and it still wont let me download. are there any other stitching software I can download that will work with my ZCam K1 Pro? I'm lost and the camera has been nothing but a paperweight.

    Noticed a 12pin cable @ (2:31) I didn't know about and that just saved me buying a lot more expensive recorder to accommodate more XLR inputs!! (eliminating the 4x XLR audio split cable @ 5:25) :)

    Something you didn't talk about is the relative cost of VR video production compared to what you'd normally do. You mentioned some extra steps in the post-production stages - does that add a lot to the time and thus the cost of production?

    Cool! I'm curious about the Senny VR mic, do you know if it's necessary, or because we're dealing with 180 degrees, and we're pretty much meant to look in one direction, could I get away with the just a stereo mic? I was thinking about plopping a Zoom h5 on top (with the stereo mic attachment) and using the 3.5m output, recording it directly to the K1 Pro's stereo input. I would greatly appreciate any thoughts you have, as I have not dealt with VR spacial recordings yet. Thanks for making this awesome video!!

  • @nils42
    @nils42 4 роки тому

    I don't know if this was the right hardware choice for VR. I tested it with the quest. For recording for 3D movies this is great.
    But since in VR you are turning your head, the two eyed view gets distorted. If you are using one lens the user can look around freely. MAybe this is a software thing.
    I only could look straight ahead to see clearly :/
    Other than that a great insight in the maker spaces

    I have a bit of an issue when you call a stereoscopic 180 deg camera VR. Nothing on the recorded content is virtual, technically you are even locked to fov.
    It's a stereo 3D camera....

    • @DenkyManner
      @DenkyManner 4 роки тому

      But it has head tracking. You can look around you just can't turn all the way around, which isn't an issue. Have you ever watched a full 360 video in vr? It's more of a hassle then an advantage

    • @SteveHodge
      @SteveHodge 4 роки тому

      @@DenkyManner Stereo 360 video probably shouldn't be called VR either. For it to be VR (IMO) the user needs to be able to move their viewpoint laterally as well as rotationally.

    I have a much cheaper 3D camera made by Insta360 called the EVO. It's a hybrid that can shoot 180 3D and 360.
    You mention that Adobe Premier has tools that help you integrate 2D images with the 3D video.
    I haven't been able to figure out how to do that yet. With standard 2D video, I always include titles, copyright warnings, etc but with my 3D video...I currently only release the video with no titles, etc.
    Can you do a short video on how to integrate 2D images within Premier for 3D video?
    Kind regards, Drew

    • @watashiwastevedesu6928

      In my humble opinion ...I think the 180 vr creators like to have some control over what the viewer experiences in order to make it an "optimum" VR experience with focus on the focal point/subject. It's also a heck of a lot more data to edit/render, upload/download.

  • @ReginaldStaples
    @ReginaldStaples Рік тому

    Good decision on VR180 - I don't get why 360 video is still being used/filmed? You essentially waste 180-240 degrees of video depending on where you are looking. You have little control over audience experience etc. HQ VR180 is a much better format.

    Save yourself thousands and stick a couple GoPro cameras together. It's the software that does the VR work, not the camera itself.
